Two Things Cannot Occupy The Same Space (3/12/18)
“Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and thingslike these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that thosewho practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such thingsthere is no law.” (Galatians5:19-23)
Goback to your childhood years and picture in your mind a group of childrenplaying musical chairs.  Your personal experienceplaying the game will help you.  You knowhow the game goes.  Walking around agroup of chairs, always one less than the number of children who by their ownchoice had decided to participate in the game, the “contestants” decreased innumber every time the music stopped.  Startingwith ten children, gradually the number would be reduced to two children whowould have to circle the one remaining chair. It’s a fierce competition.  Canyou see the strategies being used by the finalists?  Each would walk slowly and perhaps even pausewhen they were on the front side of the chair and suddenly accelerate theirpace when they walked on the back side behind the chair.  On the front side, they might act like theyhad to slow down because of a pain, but miraculously on the back side of thechair, the pain was gone.  Finally themusic stops and one of the children jumps into the chair.  The other child ends up sitting on the winner’slap, just a fraction of a second too late. The winner would remark, “Get off! There is no room for both of us!” It is as these little people, yet to reach the first grade, had alreadystudied the laws of physics and learned the Pauli Exclusion Principle that says,in layperson terms, “Two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.”  Now let us escape our imagination of the childhoodgame and enter into the real experiences you will certainly face today.  Like the two finalists in the musical chairsgame, on multiple occasions today, you will have the deeds of the fleshcompeting with the fruit of the Spirit. There is no getting out of this experience.  After all you decided to participate once youaccepted Christ as your Savior.  So useyour strategies of prayer, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and pausing todiscern whether your position is favorable and will ensure that the deeds ofthe flesh are defeated!  All day long, remember that “Two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time!”
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”(Galatians 5:25)
Still committed to the climb,
Mark L. King
