Happy St Valentin for all the loving hearts out there!
Hope you find happiness like Usnavi and Vanessa. Go watch In The Heights as a treat, Lin-Manuel Miranda is the only god we worship in this house (and Apollo, and Masami Kurumada-).

Can you make a fic with Vanessa and Usnavi fluff? Give me cavities from it.
abso-fucking-lutely. they're one of my favorite straight ships (says a lot coming from a queer such as myself) i love the loser x girlboss dynamic so much (i'm gonna assume you're requesting the obc because imho obc is the best cast)
-------------
Orange and gold rays of sunlight spilled through the small but cozy apartment Vanessa and Usnavi shared. Usnavi was, as always, the first to wake up. He gazed down at Vanessa, having his daily morning thought of, How did I get so lucky? He smiled, leaned down to kiss her cheek, and put a shirt on. He walked out into their kitchen and started coffee.
As it brewed, the bitter and nostalgic smell of coffee flowed through the air of the apartment. Eventually, Vanessa caught wind of it and slowly sat up. She ran her fingers through her hair, pushing her messy dark brown locks out of her face. She groaned very dramatically as she started to sit up. The smell of coffee was the only thing motivating her at this point. Still, she pushed herself off the bed and stumbled into the kitchen. There, she found Usnavi pouring two cups of coffee. She walked behind him and wrapped him in a hug from behind.
"Buenos dias, Nessa," Usnavi whispered with a gentle lopsided smile.
Vanessa hid her face in his back, groaning, "Coffee..."
Usnavi chuckled softly and handed Vanessa a mug. She took it without letting of him, resting her chin on his shoulder and drinking the coffee gratefully.
"Amazing as always, babe," Vanessa praised as she rinsed the mug out and put it in the sink. "I gotta hurry up and get to work, but I'll visit you during lunch."
"I'll be waiting."
The two shared a kiss before Vanessa left the apartment, once again leaving Usnavi with that daily morning thought.
How did I get so lucky?

In the Heights | Well, Your Coffee’s on the House (Okay)
Usnavi is completely smitten with Vanessa. Not that that is a profound or new discovery by any means; the entire barrio has watched him stumble over his love for this girl for the better half of the twelve years he’s known her.
Sometimes he gets the sneaking suspicion that she knows and that she’s purposefully teasing him, hanging that information over his head like bait just to see how he reacts if she leans in an inch too close or looks up at him through her beautifully thick lashes at just the right moment. And then she’ll punch his shoulder in the way only a person who’s fixing you squarely in the friend zone would, walking out with a free coffee in hand and the illusion is broken once more.
There’s no way she knows. He’d hardly describe Vanessa as cruel. Sonny would probably argue differently.
“She’s playing you, cuz. You’re so obvious it’s almost gross,” Usnavi moves to pinch him for the comment but he’s quick to dodge it, anticipating it before it comes. “I’m not trying to be an ass but no girl as hot as that doesn’t know the affect they have on guys.”
Usnavi isn’t the biggest fan of the femme fatale stereotype Sonny insists on pushing onto his long term crush. It’s not like she can help being alluring. He grapples with a way to combat it, but before he can reprimand his (admittedly too old to still be getting shit for cussing) cousin for his language, the little bell for the bodega door chimes.
Sun streams in from behind Vanessa as she enters the store, whilst Usnavi vaguely considers how fitting of an entrance it was for someone as perfect as her. He glances subtly at Sonny who is staring at him with contempt as though he could read the thought forming in his mind.
“Buenas días, Usnavi.” She’s smiling softly at him as though she’s genuinely happy to see him, and Usnavi finds himself grinning ten times harder at the prospect. Sonny nudges him to remind him to stop smiling like a freak. A common result of what he dubbed ‘The Vanessa Affect’. Usnavi adjusts his lips in what he hopes is a more friendly, less serial-killer-y expression.
“Beunos días. What can I get for you, chica?” Vanessa flows around the store in search of her regular list, her long legs carrying her like she’s dancing. Usnavi had always admired the way her hips seemed to sway every time she took a step. Wondered whether she had callouses from constantly wearing platforms.
“Just these, thanks.” She drops the pain killers at his till, playing with the hem of her jean skirt as she chews her lip absently. Usnavi can tell she’s distracted, hardly present in the bodega.
“You good?” She snaps out of it quickly, staring at him with wide eyes. God help him, her eyes.
“Sorry, I’m just a little distracted. Moving and all…” Usnavi feels his chest ache at the kicked puppy expression Vanessa suddenly sports. He’s well aware that her search for new housing in a better side of Brooklyn has been relatively fruitless. He wishes he could do more, curses the part of him that’s glad she’s still here to greet him with a smile and a story from the salon every morning.
“Well, your coffee’s on the house. Think of it as a good luck charm, or a token of my support.” He’s already dusting the top of it with a sprinkle of cinnamon and bagging her ibuprofen before Vanessa can even think to protest. She slowly puts her wallet back in her purse before grabbing the drink and bag from his hands, let’s her fingers linger as she thanks him. Sonny rolls his eyes from his place stacking cans onto the beans shelf. They barely notice he’s still present in the store.
“Okay. You’re too good to me, Usnavi. I’m gonna get spoiled. I doubt they’ll give me coffee just the way I like it on the house downtown.” Her eyes have lit up again, and it’s all Usnavi could have hoped for with the gesture.
“More incentive to come back and visit us little people when you make it big.” She giggles, tucks a strand of her long dark hair behind her ear and moves for the door, turning at the last second to wave Usnavi goodbye.
As the bell chimes again with her dismissal, Sonny comments that he should probably start a dollar jar for everyday he doesn’t make an actual move. Usnavi feels far too warm inside to even feign shame.

In case you still doing the AU Thingy.
Zorro AU with Usnavi as Alejandro, Vanessa as Elena and in the second movie Sonny as Joaquim. 🙏🙏🙏
Awwwww family of masked vigilantes fighting together X3c
And Usnavi being super nice and mild-mannered as himself but being secretly badass as a masked hero is something I didn't know I needed until now.
But OOF! Vanessa being blackmailed into breaking up with Usnavi in order to keep him safe and his identity from being revealed. She would do that to protect him, and probably because she knows Usnavi would've done the same for her...
Also Sonny would absolutely sneak away from a field trip and sneak onto the bad guy's cart to try and help. But at least he gets to ride a horse and divert the train track instead of being a hostage the whole time. Win some, lose some XD

⭐star⭐
thank you kindly for inquiring, my dear! because you gave me free rein, i'm going to talk about my beloved 'all those days...' series! i don't know if you've seen the film version of 'in the heights', but that thing ate my brain for basically an entire summer and still rests insanely close to the front of my favorites collection!
once i saw that v/usnavi canonically had an adorable mini human, my fandom heart demanded that the blanks be filled in!
for part one, 'who'd have thought that love could be so caffeinated', as a true caffeine/coffee fiend myself, i was stuck on the idea of v/usnavi still trying to keep this accessory to their connection part of the equation. the second scene was me wanting v to have the credentials to support her talent so she can always douse all future doubters! OH. of course the tide pen was required! there was no way i wasn't bringing that back. that detail in the movie murdered me! also, 'la reina linda' means 'the cute queen' in spanish.
for part two, 'what’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing (what do you think we might see)', i had this very clear image of a parallel between a blackout the night iris is born and the blackout we use on-screen, where v and usnavi were divided and hurt. i was so attached to the thought that i was convinced anything i put down wouldn't live up to my own expectations. however, thanks to the lovely @hell-comes-to-gotham, who enthusiastically requested my extended musings on the matter, i committed words to a page. miracle of miracles, i love(d) what i came up with! do i wish there were thousands more of said words? YES. i'm happy to report nothing feels forced when i reread, which i do - OFTEN - and is my greatest creative litmus test.

Another day, another In the Heights.
Tumblr media
I've watched this musical over three times and each time I sobbed my heart out and hollered my throat away. The songs are just so full of heart and soul, and the story is essentially a culmination of family, home and purpose and I love that so, so much.
I loved how much time they gave to tender introduced each character with their own style and theme and story. When Nina's theme came on screen I just, I just melted, honestly. I related SO hard. Studying away from home can be a highly pressuring journey, what with your parents wishes and your people's expectations riding on your shoulders. I love that Nina was able to find her purpose for going to college in the end, it gives me hope that maybe some day, somehow I'll find my purpose of being here too.
Benny is a solid bro. I love him.

Also can we give it up for the local lesbians!!!!!!!!!! I didn't notice them the first time but watching it now I'm like how did I miss this????
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Usnavi and Vanessa's relationship was such a right person, wrong time situation (again, hella relatable) until the very end, where Usnavi finally found where his home was, where his home could be. The line "I'm running to make it home, but home's where Vanessa's running away from." was SUCH a powerful line.
Honestly there are so many powerful lines in this musical including, ironically "We are powerless." The double meaning that that line holds (the blackout and them as a people) along with the innate desire to dance, to sing and to be strong despite all that was running against them. Honestly just. Beautiful story-telling.
Tumblr media
And lastly, the woman who made me sob my heart out, the woman who shouldered the stories of her people, who gave detail to the little things, who appreciated the bread crumbs, the stars in the sky. Abuela Claudia.
Tumblr media
She has my heart and my entire soul. Her story is such a compelling one, the foundation of so many immigrant families, the older generation who fought tooth and nail for the younger generations to grow their roots and stick their feet. The older generation who made a home out of foreign lands. Pacienca y fe.
The search for home and its meaning has always been a frequent question in the back of my mind, and while I haven't found mine yet - this musical gives me hope that it is somewhere, in the heights. I'll find it, some day.
