The story takes place in a hotel. The main character, Makoto Karaki (Kanata Hongo) is a wanted serial killer. However, he has lost all of his memories. Under such circumstances, when he dies, he has a mysterious ability to “time leap” and return to the past. As he’s being chased as a criminal, who can he trust? Who should he be wary of? What is his true identity? The man searches to find the truth as he repeats decisions and death.
Cast
Appearing in Death Come True will be Kanata Hongo (as the main character Makoto Karaki), Chiaki Kuriyama (as police investigator Akane Sachimura), Win Morisaki (as police investigator Nozomu Kuji), Yuki Kaji (as the hotel concierge), Chihiro Yamamoto (as psychopath girl Nene Kurushima), and Jiro Sato (as news anchor Kenichi Mino).

Killer 7 As A Postmodern Work
One of the most striking elements of Killer7 as a video game is its subversion of what could be expected of it at face value. One may expect a video game about assassins to be standard affair, a first or third person shooter, something where you kill the final boss and beat the level, but Killer7 ultimately twists this known formula on its head, creating something that certainly takes pieces of other works, but creates something wholly new and original from them.
As a game, Killer7 mixes genres in a way that no game has successfully done since, taking elements from House of the Dead styled “Rail Shooters” and combining it with classic point and click adventure gameplay. This genre mixing ensures that very few new players will feel familiar with how the game works, forcing players to view the game from a new perspective, using both quick reflexes and precise aiming for combat, as well as thinking through the many puzzles the game presents.
https://youtu.be/kNBdPNxLyvk?t=315
In this gameplay video, the player can clearly be seen slowly learning how the game works, initially attempting to shoot at an invisible enemy, then learning to scan, turning them visible and vulnerable. This approach to gameplay forces players to relearn how to handle basic enemy encounters by punishing the behaviors that many other games would reward, and forcing players to think first to get the best possible outcome.
Killer7′s visual design can be broadly defined by the term “Cel Shading”, which refers to a technique used in rendering 3D objects with unrealistic lighting systems that use different light levels rather than a smooth transition. This style is most prominently used in games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Jet Set Radio, which feature bright and colorful worlds that can be seen as very child-friendly. Killer7 adopts this style, but subverts the expectations set by previous cel shaded games by presenting a very mature and adult-oriented experience.
Tumblr media
By far, the most postmodern element of Killer7 is its story, and the extremely unorthodox methods that are used to tell it. For starters, unlike most games, a vast majority of the characters that you speak to and play as in Killer7 are already dead. From the titular Killer7 (with the exception of Garcian and Harman Smith), the recurring characters Travis and Susie (who only appears as a talking severed head), as well as the targets assassinated in previous levels, a vast majority of the cast of this game is either already dead, or will be. The “Ghosts” that the player will encounter throughout the game do not speak normally as other characters do, instead delivering dialogue through subtitles with jumbled, nonsensical speech played over it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-HAnFt0W1E
The speech of living characters, however, can be just as esoteric as that of the ghosts encountered. The first time the player meets the game’s antagonist, Kun Lan, he attempts to trick Harman Smith, who tells him “Tricks are for kids”, and then proceeds to catch the bullet he is shot at with, flying out the window and landing on top of the space needle.
https://youtu.be/dTZO60PaFTc?t=215
After the game’s ending, a title card appears stating “Shanghai, 100 years later”, in which a nearly identical scene takes place.
https://youtu.be/ArDj_PySA5c?t=522
The overwhelmingly complex and dark plot of killer7 is highlighted by scenes like this, where it seems to acknowledge just how strange a world it has created. While the main plot may focus mostly on a conspiracy by the Japanese government to take control of the United States, and many horrific scenes take place throughout, Killer7 is also a game where you have a series of duels to the death with “The Handsomemen” who are essentially a group of power rangers in Times Square.
https://youtu.be/ZvGR1HhvXB0?t=140
This sequence is followed by several fourth wall breaks, including a character who insists that she knows Garcian’s name because she writes the story before fading from existence, and a fake credits sequence for “Hardboiled Shooting Killer7 Online” with character art that parodies various arcade games.
The ending of Killer7 is without a doubt the most important piece of this game’s postmodernism. After learning about the Japanese Government’s true secret weapon against the US, a person by the name of Emir Parkreiner, All of the members of the Killer7 except Garcian and Harman are permanently killed. This scene is followed by a series of flashbacks at the Union Hotel, where it is revealed that Garcian had killed all of the members of the Killer7 previously, and had simply been using their weapons throughout the game. Gargian is awakened to his true identity, Emir Parkreiner, and is terrified of what he has done.
In an extra chapter you play as Garcian who has fully become Emir Parkreiner, and is now nearly invincible. Emir confronts Kenjiro Matsuoka, who works for the Japanese government, and players are given a choice to either kill him and allow the US to destroy Japan with no consequences, or let him live and allow Japan, which was nuked previously in the story, to launch their own nuclear missiles at America. This is followed by confronting the final member of the Heaven Smile terrorist organization, who is revealed to be Iwazaru, who helped you through the game, whose real identity was Kun Lan, the game’s antagonist.
https://youtu.be/P0GVnbIxhnw?t=217
This ending is as strange as it is ambiguous. It raises far more questions than it could ever answer, and being followed by the aforementioned post-credits scene only makes it that much more bizarre.
Killer7′s entire existence is a wonder, for something as strange and off-putting to have been made at all is incredible. Despite this, the game has garnered a strong cult following for its extreme use of postmodern ideals to create something that takes the familiar and turns it into something that had never been done before, and likely will never be done again.
Many of director Suda51′s other projects are similarly postmodern, from clear fourth wall breaking to fast forwarding through a long speech mid cutscene, his work never fails to turn the tried and true into something new and different.

Torture Warnings
Discussion of many torture methods, mentions of rape, gang-rape, sexual assault and various other nasty things. I used as broad a definition of what constitutes torture as possible.
As with all lists suggestions and corrections encouraged.
Explicit on screen Torture:
The Age of Decadence - Uses crucifixion as a method of execution.
American McGee’s Alice - Multiple instances of on screen torture.
Assassin’s Creed Franchise - Interrogation usually involves punching people until they talk.
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood - Caterina Sforza is captured and beaten by the Borgia so badly that she cannot walk and must be carried to her rescue.
Batman Arkham Series - Dangling interrogation.
Battlefield 4 - Protagonist and partner are electroshocked.
Bayonetta - A key game mechanic, not avoidable.
Beyond Good and Evil - Double HH is rescued from an alien electrical torture machine.
Bioshock Infinite - Multiple scenes involving Elizabeth being tortured.
Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea - The protagonist is subjected to an attempted lobotomy as an interrogation technique.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - The protagonist is electroshock tortured by the FBI and an early level involves killing a person kept alive by electro torture.
Call of Duty: Black Ops - Electroshock torture, torturing people with glass shards, and Russian Roulette.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - Torture of a captive and the protagonist has his legs shot off and the wounds stepped on.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - A character is beaten and executed.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - A warlord is threatened with a toxin grenade and offered a gas mask if he talks.
Clock Tower 3 - In a cutscene a man and his elderly mother are pushed into an acid vat by one of the murderers you fight.
Cold War: On Your Own Behind the Iron Curtain - Protagonist can interrogate people by dangling them over a fatal drop, Batman style.
Curse of Monkey Island - The protagonist gets tarred and feathered (at least once) but as the tar in question isn’t actually hot this is more of embarrassment for comedy that torture, mentioned for completeness’ sale because I’m a pedant.
The Darkness - The protagonist is tortured and forced to watch someone die.
The Darkness 2 - Torture and crucifixion.
Dead Space 2 - Isaac must perform eye surgery on himself, not technically torture but probably still qualifies.
Dragon Age 2 - Hawke can have a miner tortured to death and killed.
Deadly Premonition - Multiple murder victims tortured to death.
Dishonoured - You can use torture against a man in a brothel (who is obviously expecting an S&M session) to extract information.

Dragon Age: Origins - Multiple scenes, most notable in Arl Howe’s dungeon and the Broodmother backstory section of the Deep Roads.

The Last of Us - Joel tortures two men to find Ellie.

SUDA STRIKES AGAIN! An Interview with Suda51
PAX West was a few weeks back, so I apologize for how long it's taken to get this interview up. Aside from playing a bunch of awesome games and seeing old friends, I had the chance to interview one of my favorite people in games, Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda51, and... things went off the rails pretty quickly.
Let's start with the most obvious new thing: Travis Touchdown is back! What made you want to come back and revisit this crazy man's adventures?
It's not the most interesting answer, but it's just that the timing naturally happened to match up. I'd been working on Let it Die, and that had been a major focus, but once that had started to cool down I started thinking about what we were going to do next. So the Switch--well, it wasn't even called the Switch then, it was still the NX--and it caught my eye and decided that this was the direction we were going to go.
Your games always have a very distinctive, individual sense of action. Lollipop Chainsaw was grindhouse and brutal, but silly, and Killer is Dead had very cool, sleek action. What kind of attitude will we see in the action of Travis Strikes Again?
Anyone who's familiar with No More Heroes can tell you that Travis is a gamer, he's always been a gamer. We want to expand on that with the way Travis fights--yes, he's an assassin, but we want to put the gamer side of him at the forefront this time around. This isn't something he's going to do in the background as he's doing other stuff, this is going to inform how Travis fights and how the player helps Travis grow stronger. There will be several games within Travis Strikes Back so it's less a "No More Heroes" game and more a "Travis Touchdown" game.
Okay, so my next question is less about Travis Strikes Again, but more about all the different titles you've worked on over the years. Your boss fights are always memorable and clever--out of all the ones you've made, what are the ones that are nearest and dearest to your heart?
[He takes time to think, and decides on three of his favorites.] Okay! First off, in Killer7, there's the boss fight with Kurahashi and Akiba, the two old men who take you on at the same time, and you have to fight them... and their brains. The other... definitely has to be Holly Summers in the original No More Heroes. [I spend a little time gushing about how Holly Summers is my favorite fight in NMH too.]
This is the third game we've spent with Travis--fourth if you count Heroes' Paradise (an updated port of the first game). Of the games you've made--the SudaVerse, I guess--which ones would you like to return to?
So Juliet (from Lollipop Chainsaw) is actually owned by Kadokawa, but if I had the time or opportunity I'd love to work more with her and her world. Even now, people are doing cosplay of her, there are even game shows in Europe with cosplay of her! She's such a beloved character by fans, so I'd love to do another Lollipop Chainsaw.
We're seeing a lot of famous actors and creators working in games--you see Hideo Kojima working with Kiefer Sutherland, Mads Mikkelsen, Norman Reedus--if you could work with anyone, who would you work with for a game?
[He grapples with this question a bit.] I feel that Kojima-san is much more of a video game celebrity than I am, so he gets the chance to work with these famous people. I feel like I'm an indie developer, so I'm probably not in the position to be working with such famous creators, buuuuuut if I had the chance, my top three are:
    Kyle MacLachlan,
    Harry Dean Stanton (RIP),
and David Lynch. [We start talking about the new Twin Peaks here, and he was a bit behind--partially due to travel and the fact that episodes aired later in Japan. I didn't spoil anything for Suda, don't worry.]
You tend to work with original properties and create your own worlds. If you were to make a dream project game based on an anime or manga, what's your first pick?
Oh that's easy--Gundam: Hathaway's Flash! It only exists as a novel, but I would love to make a game based on it. Also, Tekkaman, Voltes V, and... Fujiko Fujio's Perman. And, let's see... y'know what would be cool, Esper Mami! There's a manga called Ai ga Yuku, it's not very well-known in the US, but that could be very cool as a game, it's an awesome manga. And finally, Violence Jack! That would be so cool! [We go off the rails again talking about Go Nagai and how he's the f**king man and how we're both excited for Devilman Crybaby.]
LIGHTNING ROUND! These are a bunch of quick questions I'd like you to answer off the top of your head. First off, what game(s) are you playing right now?
I've been playing Breath of the Wild--just last week, I managed to get all 900 Korok seeds.
What's a game you love that you can't seem to get anyone else into?
It's very hard to get Japanese players to try out Hotline Miami!
  What's your all-time favorite manga?
Violence Jack, easy. My number two is probably... Susano Oh, also by Go Nagai.
What's the coolest thing you've seen so far at PAX West?
Ape Out, at the Devolver booth!
What's your favorite restaurant here in Seattle?
There's a Japanese restaurant on Capitol Hill, it's called Suika! [After this, Suda's translator tells me that he had a lot of fun with this interview, especially the last part. Now, he has some questions for me, which I'll share here!]
Suika has a wall of Famicom cartridges
What's your favorite restaurant here in Seattle, Nate-san?
An Irish restaurant and bar by Pike Place Market, it's called Kells!
You're really familiar with old anime and manga--what are your favorites?
Probably Dragonball--my all-time favorite is Rurouni Kenshin and that's technically pretty old now. But for anything from the early '80s, definitely GoLion, Dragonball, Saint Seiya, and Fist of the North Star.
We ended up talking a little longer about Twin Peaks and Violence Jack, and how we're both hyped for Devilman Crybaby (again), and how it was so awesome in Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman when Amon saved that little demon girl and then devoured her like a burrito. What about you? Would you be down for a Suda51 Violence Jack game? Are you looking forward to Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes? Sound off in the comments and let us know!
