good morning UK pals!
you may have already heard (shocker, I know), but there's a general election today!
if you're registered to vote, and haven't yet done so via a postal vote or set up a proxy vote, head out to your polling station - with photo ID! - to drop an X in a box before polling stations close at 10pm today!
if you have any issues, the best place to look is the UK government or Electoral Commission websites, however there's a little FAQ below to get you started.
how do I register to vote?
it's too late to register to vote in this election - the cut off was 18th June - but you can register at any time to be eligible for future elections and votes.
how do I vote by post?
the deadline for registering for a postal vote has also passed for this election, and postal votes will have had to be sent back by now to be counted - they need to arrive at your elections team of your local council before 10pm today to be counted. you can register for a postal vote, and find more info, in the UK government website.
how do I vote by proxy?
a proxy vote allows someone else to vote on your behalf. the deadline to apply for one for this election has passed, however you can still register for future votes.
there are still emergency proxy votes, for when unexpected circumstances arise and you can't get to your polling station. these can be applied for on the day, up to 5pm, by getting in touch with your local council electoral services team.
polling station? what's that? where's mine?
a polling station is the place you go to vote, and it'll be different for each person based on your post code - you can't go to just any polling station to vote!
if you're registered to vote, but don't know your polling station, you can check the electoral commission website to see where you need to go to cast your vote.
photo ID? since when?!
since May 2023, photo identification has been required to vote in most elections in the UK.
for most people, this simply means bringing their passport or driving licence with them to the polling station - and remember, out of date ID is valid in this case as long as it still looks like you!
if you don't have a passport or driving licence, there are other forms of ID you can bring to vote. if you don't have any of these you can also apply for a "Voter Authority Certificate", however the deadline to do this for this election has already passed.
how do I vote? what's the process?
when you arrive at your polling station - these are usually marked by big white signs that say POLLING STATION in bold letters - a member of the polling station staff will ask for your name and your ID.
once you're found on their many, many sheets of paper, they will hand you your polling paper and direct you to a booth. pencils are provided, so no need to bring your own.
simply put an X in the box if the candidate of your choice - just one! - fold your paper in half, and slip it into the ballot box before you leave.
if you have any other questions, polling station staff are a great first point of call. if you're unable to vote for any reason, contact your local authority electoral services team - contact details for these can be found on your local council website.
what times can I vote?
voting is open from 7am until 10pm at all polling stations. as long as you are in the queue to vote at 10pm, you will be allowed inside to cast your vote.
how do I tactical vote?
tactical voting this year aims to remove the Conservative party from as many constituencies as possible.
check stopthetories.vote for details of the best candidate to vote for in your area.
happy voting!

AS THE BODY-COUNT CHART HAS PROVED SO POPULAR....
Crimes Commited By the Bodies Detectives
Hillinghead: Having Gay Sex Whilst Being Victorian; Perverting the Course of Justice (False Confession)
Weissman: Multiple Murders; Police Corruption; 2 counts of Abduction (Esther, technically, & Lady Harker in one of the timelines)
Shahara: Leading an anti-government militia??? [Details unclear]
Iris: gets brother to run DNA on equipment he shouldn't have. Driving without a valid licence and car insurance, possibly (Look, if the Maplewood we see in 2020 still comes from 2053, I bet my hat she doesn't have the right paperwork to be driving that taxi)
Crimes the Bodies Detectives are accused of/framed for Commiting:
Hillinghead: Having Gay Sex Whilst Being Victorian but like. Not with the guy he actually fucked. Also, suicide. Also, his confession to murder is perpetuated by authorities who know its a falsehood
Weissman: Corruption, which would be fair except there is no evidence backing up the assertion- only antisemitism and xenophobia. Murders that he committed. Murders that the people accusing him of them commited. Spying for Germany.
Shahara: Leading a terrorist organisation?? (Seriously the build up around Older!Shahara's group of people is...flimsy, or possibly I need a rewatch but like....did they do anything beyond theorize about The Throat whilst weilding guns?)
Iris: Existing in Victorian England or whatever it is she ends up sharing a cell with Hillinghead for "officially"
Things the Bodies Detectives Actually Did Wrong:
Hillinghead: NOTHING. (OK cheating on his wife is not great, but IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES--)
Weissman: ALSO NOTHING.
Shahara: Even more nothing than the other two combined
Maplewood: Nothing that isn't understandable given the dystopia bullshit she grew up with.

Seokjin had come over in the middle of the night when you couldn’t sleep and inerputed him for a movie marathon. Beyond tired was a mild way of putting it. He woke up early in the morning, struggling and finally managing to shimmy out of your grasp after a long fifteen minutes. He stilled against the bed, one foot out on the floor, bed hair spiking everywhere, and head slowly turning to you as you whined about the loss of contact. Acting fast, Seokjin tucked a pillow under your arm.
You sighed and nuzzled it, quickly falling back into the Dreamland.
Seokjin rubbed his face and got out of bed, padding to your kitchen on soft feet to prepare some breakfast. As he opened the refrigerator, he found two lunchboxes of overnight oats. Opening them, he took a sniff, trying to sense how long they had been in the fridge. After he deemed that they were edible, he placed one on the table and headed to pack your living room as he ate.
It wasn't long before you woke up to the birds cawing outside your window, silently cursing them to let you sleep a little longer. Just as you were almost back asleep, they started calling again, causing you to groan out in frustration. Everything has been frustrating recently. You patted the space beside you, only for your hands to touch against the cool sheets.
Sighing, you pushed yourself out of bed, heading to the kitchen where you were sure your brother was.
Only to find it empty with a box of half-eaten overnight oats you had just made last afternoon. You tilted your head, yawning as you tried to think.
"That's mine." Seokjin came into the kitchen with arms full of opened snacks and dirty, empty cups. "Go take yours. I left it in the fridge."
"Where were you?" Your voice came out scratchy and hoarse, the aftermath of all the tears and screaming last night.
"Living room." Seokjin placed the cups in the sink. "I'm surprised you walked straight past me at the couch just now." He snickered, keeping your snacks in the baskets.
"You were probably hiding from me, waiting for this moment."
"Nah, I wouldn't be so bad."
The both of you started the day by cleaning your house, Seokjin nagging at you for not taking care of yourself and the place you live in. The constant "Look at the amount of dust there is on this!" and "Oh my gosh, Y/N!". At least your brain took a break from what you were running from. After dinner, Seokjin had left, saying that he was called back to the hospital. You shooed him off despite him worrying over you.
"Are you sure you'll be fine?" His brows were creased against his forehead. "I can cancel anyway. My licence is no longer valid so technically calling me back is unnecessary. So I can stay if you need me."
"Just go, Seokjin."
"They'll probably make me stay the whole night, you know that."
"I know that." You patted his shoulder. "Just go, I'll be fine."
With your constant pestering and deflection, Seokjin reluctantly left your house, leaving you once again in your mind. You watch as his car revered from the parking lot, driving away. You closed the curtains and turned off the lights.
Might as well get some sleep to escape reality.
The sad truth of that.
Tumblr media
You had woken up just as Lillianne burst into your house screaming, “FBI, OPEN UP!”
Groaning, you turned to the side, hands blindly grabbing your phone off the coffee table. When your sleep-muggled brain finally registered the time that your screen showed you, you shot up, cursing your way to your room.
“I was wondering why you weren’t out yet. You better be lucky I came in.”
Hastily, you got yourself ready, shrugging on clothes like you were just caught. Technically, you were. You and Lils managed to leave the house in a record time of seven minutes, only missing your water bottle. But the water in the shop was free anyway, so you’d just take that.
Starting the car, you drove off in the direction of the shop. The moment you stepped in, you were already dreading coming to work. The shop was filled with customers.
Good for the business, not good for your health.
Starting the orders in the receipts, you prepped yourself for a long night ahead. Lils worked at the cashier, shoving more receipts your way as you balanced making drinks and serving to scoop ice creams.
You were certainly not pleased with the amount of people in the shop at four in the afternoon. But it was a Saturday - what could you say?
Family gatherings, children playing around, couples on dates. It made your heart clench every time you had to serve a couple. Seeing the lovey-dovey looks they send each other reminded you of a certain hybrid. Shaking your head, you tightened your apron and continued. The coffee would not make itself and the food would not serve itself.
Oh, how you would love that.
Then, you wouldn’t have to constantly run about. But that is the nature of the job. One could only expect so much from a food and beverage job. The night went on much busier than usual on a Saturday night. Parties were held there with big gatherings and by the time the shop closed, you had heard a good four birthday songs and seen an uncountable amount of bouquets.
Cleaning up, you cleared off the used cutleries and dishes, setting them in the sink for the kitchen staff to wash. Ensuring that no ice cream scooper is left in their respective boxes overnight, you then swept and mopped the floor before cleaning the tables. Going out to throw the trash, you grabbed the bags from the kitchen and outside.
Spotting a black cat sitting idly at the bus stop, you gave it a small hello before speed-walking to the bins. They were heavy trash bags. There were a lot of baking and alcohol bottles used today. You weren’t sure when the cat had leapt down and followed you, but you soon found yourself stumbling over, trying not to step on the cat’s wagging tail. It walked in between your legs, rubbing its head against your calves - chasing it was more likely - as its tail swished violently.
Its actions reminded you a lot of Yoongi. That cat loved to show affection by constantly rubbing your calves and scenting you in between your shoulders. He had said that it was a comfortable spot to sleep on.
Your heart clenched at the thought of him.
After throwing the trash away, you squatted down to give its head a small pat with the back of your hands. “I’m sorry, buddy. My hands are filled with syrup right now and I wouldn’t like you for you to get sick when you groom yourself.”
It followed you to the shop, stopping just outside the doors.
“Come on in, buddy.” You gestured for the cat.
It was dark outside and with the heavy trash bags, you didn’t take a good look at the cat, trying to work your way around not hurting it. But now that it was inside, it mewoed and continued to rub at your ankles, going around you in circles.
“Sit.” You instructed it. It was something you hoped it could understand. And it did.
After washing your hands, you rummaged through the kitchen for a can of tuna. Spotting three, you took them all with you and headed out. Opening one, you placed it in front of the cat. “There you go, you can have all three. I’ll go get you some water, okay?”
When you headed back to the front, you found it prodding at the second can. “Here,” You placed the bowl of water onto the floor. “Have some water first. I’ll open it for you.”
You were stopped with two paws on your arm, the cat jumping up onto your lap. Sitting down in a cross-legged position, gave it more space to roam. But it seemed to know exactly where it wanted to be. In the middle with his head propped on your upper thigh. Its loud purrs fill the room as you stroke it from ear to snout.
It looks just like Yoongi.
You knew that but your conscious brain was just trying to reject it.
It wasn’t until its moonlit eyes slid to yours did the waterworks started. Carrying him up, you looked at the cat in your arms through watery eyes. Its shocked expression and terrified meows -
Your eyes closed the moment you felt his rough tongue lick your cheek. Tilting your head away from him to not cover his shiny fur in your slob, you tucked him between your neck and shoulder, head hanging down.
Tumblr media
Yoongi knew Jimin was right.
Yoongi knew that he needed to talk to you.
Yoongi also knew the address where you stayed and worked.
So when he overheard Seokjin asking a favour from Jimin to keep his phone on call in case you needed him, Yoongi dashed out of the house. Scurrying from Jimin’s home to the shop, his little cat paws could only get him there so fast.
By the time he reached it, he was parched. Panting, he stuck his tongue out to moderate his temperature. He wanted to take the chance of the next customer to enter the shop and call your attention to him. But seeing you so busy, running from place to place without a stop, Yoongi decided that it was better if he waited until the shop closed.
So Yoongi took his spot at the shaded area of the bus stop and watched you work. You were quick and agile, moving like the wind. Many times, he saw the flinch of pain and growth of your eyes when you were scared. When big groups of people came in, he could see the exhaustion in your eyes. You tried not to show the customers - but Yoongi knew better. The pain in your eyes when you see couples made his head hang.
It was his fault.
When the day was finally over and the shop closed, Yoongi waited for his chance. Like a cat hunting for his prey, Yoongi’s attention grew sharper. He noted each of your movements and when you finally came out with trash bags in hand, he leaped for it.
He did not expect you to spot him from far but you did.
It made his heart swell with a feeling he couldn’t quite describe. Pride, most probably.
She noticed me.
Rubbing against your ankles, he meowed for your attention, glad to finally be close to you. You hadn’t recognised him and it made Yoongi feel a little… sad. But the moment you did, you burst into tears and Yoongi couldn’t find a way to stop it. He was essentially trapped in your hold. He meowed frantically, hoping that you would sense the distress in his voice and stop. But you didn’t.
You continued, caressing his fur and mumbling his name over and over again.
With a meow and a particularly harsh tug, he slid out of your grasp and stood on your thighs, licking your face. You laughed as he found your sensitive spot just behind your ear. Trying to get him out of your face, Yoongi held on and continued. It was better than you crying.
“Okay, okay.” You got up, placing him on a table as he hissed from the cold contact. “I’m okay. But now I have to go wash my face since you just covered me in slobber.”
Yoongi sat up and watched your movements. From cleaning up yourself to cleaning the floor and leftover water to you turning off everything and picking him up, he didn’t dare relax. It wasn’t until you placed him in your car and wrapped him in his favourite towel did he started to feel it.
He was holding it in for such a long time that -
Tears unconsciously slid down his eyes, matting his fur.
He didn’t know how long it was before your arms pulled him up again, carrying him onto your lap. “Yoongs… Don’t cry… We’ll figure it out, I’ll try harder. I promise.”
But it has nothing to do with you.
It’s me.
The silence was kept at a peaceful wavelength until you reached home. Picking him and your bags up, he cuddled closer to you, seeking your warmth in the chilly air. The moment you opened the door, Yoongi lept out of your arms and slinked through the cat door on his door, pleased to find that it had not been locked.
Quickly shifting and changing, Yoongi left the room and slid to your side on the floor.
You brought your hands to his face, cupping his cheeks but he did not dare grumble. He wanted this to last as long as possible.
“I chose you, Y/N. I choose you, mate.” Yoongi confessed.
You closed your eyes as your lips trembled and Yoongi brought his hands up to wipe away the tears that streaked down your face.
“I’m sorry…” You whispered.
“No, please don’t be. Please.” Yoongi begged. “You are the most amazing person ever. The most beautiful and does everything you can just for me. I am sorry. I have let you down - hurt you just because I thought it was easier to let you hate me than love me.” Yoongi let himself go, crying in your lap. “My strong, beautiful, exceptional mate.” Yoongi looked up at you, voice breaking. “I’m sorry.”
This is one of the few times that Yoongi broke down in front of you.
“I’m so, so, sorry.” Yoongi kneeled in front of you, head in your lap. “I’m sorry. I did not mean - I -”
You gently placed your hands in his hair, ruffling them and stroking his ears. Yoongi’s harsh sobs could be heard throughout your house. “It’s okay, it’s okay.” You mumbled into his hair, bent over onto his body. “It’s okay, Yoongs. I’m sorry too.”
Yoongi’s head tilted upwards, voice hoarse as he asked, “Why are you sorry?”
“Because I jumped to conclusions and didn’t put enough trust and hope into our relationship. And that I let this become when we could have easily talked it out properly if I had chosen the right words to tell you.” You smiled down at him.
You had never thought that you would ever say these three words that would mean so much. You thought that our chance had been blown the moment you started that argument. You expected your chance to stay blown when Yoongi walked out of the courtroom without looking back. Saying them to Lils and Jin was a different thing from saying to Yoongi. You were always the person to express instead of say but this time -
“Yoongi,” You tilted his face upwards to you, eyes boring into his as you muttered the three words of magic. “I love you.”
From this view, you can see the widening of his eyes.
“You - You love me?” Yoongi’s eyes sparkled with a shimmery glow. “You love me?”
You nodded, smiling at his goofy expression. Yoongi suddenly shot up, bouncing around the house - much like an excited dog might when he goes on walks.
“You love me! You love me!” Yoongi ran to the windows. “Y/N love me!”
Your eyes widened, hands instantly pulling him back. “Don’t go screaming it to the world! It isn’t even 5 a.m.!”
Yoongi turned, the light in his eyes knocking the breath out of you. “But you’re mine.” Yoongi’s eyes crinkled and a gummy smile was full on show. “And you love me.”
You nodded undoubtedly. Yoongi brought you close to his chest, hugging you tightly. “You love me and I love you too.”
“Yoongi -”
“I love you.” He shook his head, eyes shining with inner light and it knocked the breath right out of you. “I love you, wholly.”

If you're in the UK, please sign this petition!
Currently, as a non binary person, I'm not able to get married or a civil partnership as myself and my gender. I'd have to be deliberately misgendered in all the paperwork and in the ceremony - in front of everyone. I'm also unable to get my passport, driving licence, and other official documents to reflect my correct identity. I can't even be officially recognised as trans, even with a gender recognition certificate, because the UK doesn't recognise non binary as a valid identity!
Please Reblog this to get as many signatures as possible! :)
Thanks! :)
Petition: Recognise nonbinary people's genders in law and in identity documents

I'd like to illustrate a problem here for a second about documentation and having ID expire every 5 years or whenever you move, while disabled in Canada, or at least Ontario.
To renew ID you need 3 pieces of documentation, one for proof of citizenship/status/immigration etc, like your birth certificate or registration etc, one for proof of residence like personally addressed mail, a bank statement or bill...
And the third, which must be separate, which is "proof of identity" for which the following is accepted:
credit card
valid Ontario driver’s licence or temporary driver’s licence
valid Ontario Photo Card
Canadian Immigration Identification Card
Certificate of Canadian Citizenship (plastic card)
Certificate of Indian Status (paper or plastic card)
Confirmation of Permanent Residence (Imm 5292)
only if signature is shown
current employee ID card
current professional association licence
Old Age Security Card
Ontario motor vehicle permit (plate portion only)
passport (Canadian or foreign)
Permanent Resident Card
only if signature is shown
Record of Landing (Imm 1000)
student ID card
union card
I have crossed out the ones I can't get as a disabled single adult with no dependents who was born here, is not elderly, cannot drive etc... Your average single young disabled adult born and raised here.
The certificate of citizenship I could [have, previously] technically get, but as a natural born citizen other sources will insist my birth certificate should be enough and I should never need this... And they STOPPED ISSUING THE PLASTIC CARDS LISTED HERE AS VALID ID!
I can't get a credit card approved because of my income.
The passport I only ever got because when I was younger I could travel, and it wouldn't get money taken off my pension etc... But most people in my position won't have or maintain this, and indeed mine is still with someone I took a trip with in my 20's and is lost to me, and I have had no real reason to renew it or report it lost. I can't renew it without getting the info off the old one and I can't apply for a new one without already having valid id AND BEING ABLE TO FIND 2 PEOPLE TO VOUCH FOR ME... Which I don't have, frankly, and I am going to go out on a limb and say that when you are more or less house bound and an inconvenient disabled who people are prone to abusing it is quite common enough to not be able to find 2 people to vouch for you. You also need a guarantor and someone to take photos! And sign them! And why would you? Why would you maintain a passport when you can't even travel??? It isn't accessible to me anyway.
So most people in my position, which is a lot, will ONLY have the photo ID card as "proof of id" which you NEED to 1. renew your health card, 2. renew the photo card itself.
My problem with this is that technically you need a photo ID card that's still valid, to make your photo id card valid again. They technically are not allowed to use your health card as this kind of ID.
I am disabled and therefor often things are LONG expired by the time I have the ability to get them renewed, so in addition to all this, my health card and photo id expire at the same time every time now.
They wanted to have a photo id alternative to the driver's license to help with issues like this to begin with, but they haven't made it much better.
The next issue is it's the only government Id that's of any use to me and that I am encouraged to get but it costs 35$ because it's treated as optional, instead of it being free like your health card is... So actually your health card does cost 35$ to maintain... Because you need your photo id card to stay valid... So actually our "free" healthcare has an out of pocket cost of 7$ per year minimum. That's not a lot, but that's not free if that 35 every 5 years stops you from being able to have health coverage.
I want a form of government ID, that counts as proof of identity, for the purpose of renewing my very important health insurance card, that doesn't bloody expire all the fucking time.
Because you're actually supposed to renew your health card every time your address changes... And when you are poor and disabled you tend to either be stuck with your parents, or stuck moving constantly to escape abuse.
And just... Do you know, how many times, for how many months I have been effectively between health coverage, in a country with free healthcare, and thus unable to seek medical attention, because my id has expired and I did not have the physical energy to go get it renewed? And that shouldn't happen!
Technically, by their own laws/policy they should have turned me away to renew my id, which would have left me 100% fucked with no existing valid ID to use to get other ID. That shouldn't be able to happen to you every 5 years or every time you move, especially when you are disabled.
And they shouldn't charge 35$ for it, considering you need it to get your health card renewed at all, technically speaking. It should be FREE! Especially if you are disabled!
If I still physically had my last passport I might be able to keep renewing it without this bullshit headache, but I can't without my old one.
They should have never switched to health cards that expire, I don't care if they wanted photo id, it was fine before, this is bullshit. This makes healthcare potentially inaccessible to the disabled because they have put it behind these stupid hoops you have to jump every 5 years and when you move.
And do you know how many disabled people have memory and mobility issues???
This is stupid.
And the kick in the teeth is that once they have my photo taken they will randomly chose to use older photos they have on file, because clearly my appearance hasn't changed enough through my adult life for them to even care how old the photo is! Why does the photo id have to expire if the photo can be over 10 years old according to their own records!? Their whole excuse for them expiring is that your appearance and address need to be up to date!
For those of you who don't know because it might have been before your time... health cards used to be white with a red stripe and no photo or address and they never expired. You only needed a new one if it was lost or stolen and that was fine. You could memorize the number on it and not even carry your card like you do with your SIN.
And then they switched us to the new photo ones to make sure everyone would have photo ID
And then they decided health cards couldn't be photo id because they didn't want to manage who got health care and who could buy alcohol with the same system for whatever reasons, so they came out with the "photo id" that you are expected to have as an alternative to a drivers license if you don't drive...
But they wanted money, so they charge 35$ every five years and make you pray to their monument of bureaucracy to get it.
Anyway fuck this my ability to make medical appointments shouldn't expire in a country with free healthcare. If they had a problem with people using each other's health cards before and messing up records, they should have made it easier to get your own health card, and not harder. And yes they should have made it so anyone even an illegal immigrant or someone who lost all their ID in a fire could walk into a clinic and still get basic care.
Not this bullshit song and dance.
So gee, if I fail to renew online just before these card expire you will hear me rant about this bullshit again in 5 years.
They could at LEAST give you a disability id card that never expires that you can use for shit like accessing the food bank or for proof of identity etc... Maybe even then it would be easy to have discount programs for anyone on a disability pension, maybe any groceries that are deemed basic necessities enough could be partially or fully subsidized without extra applications and headaches?
But no it's like they want to make healthcare inaccessible for the people who need it the most.

Good Morning. It is polling day and you will need a valid photo ID to vote.
Passports and driving licences are a good go to. It does not need to be in date as long as you look the same.

"There was the officer who told Tyler Nielsen she needed to check his licence because he was driving a car-share vehicle. Two weeks later, another officer warned him — incorrectly — that there were warrants out for his arrest.
Then two RCMP officers in Surrey pulled Nielsen out of his car and handcuffed him before letting him go with no charges and little explanation. Six months later, he was pulled over again by an officer who explained she just needed to check his licence, because sometimes car-share vehicles are stolen or driven by people who don’t have a valid driver’s licence.
Finally, there was the officer who told Nielsen he’d been pulled over because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
Nielsen says being pulled over six times in 18 months is not normal for him. He’s had no traffic tickets in the five years he’s lived in B.C., and none of the traffic stops have resulted in tickets or charges.
But he can identify when the traffic stops started — after he was interviewed by several local news outlets in August 2021.
In September 2020, Nielsen had filmed a Vancouver Police Department officer shoving a man so hard that he fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement. A complaint about the incident had previously been made to B.C.’s Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner, but the office had ruled the complaint “unsubstantiated” and closed the file.
That changed when BeeLee Lee, a friend of Nielsen’s, posted his video on her social media accounts nearly a year after the incident took place. Global News, The Tyee and Vancouver Is Awesome all reported on the story and the police complaint was reopened. In October 2021, the complaint was referred to the RCMP for a criminal investigation.
Nielsen says the first traffic stop happened soon after he gave media interviews about his video in August 2021. After that stop, he started recording on his phone whenever he noticed police had started tailing or surveilling him."

A hillbilly went hunting one day in West Virginia and bagged three ducks. He put them in the bed of his pickup truck and was about to drive home where he was confronted by an ornery game warden who didn't like hillbillies. The game warden ordered to the hillbilly to show his hunting license, and the hillbilly pulled out a valid West Virginia hunting license. The game warden looked at the license, then reached over and picked up one of the ducks, sniffed it's butt, and said, "This duck ain't from West Virginia. This is a Kentucky duck. You got a Kentucky hunting license, boy?" The hillbilly reached into his wallet and produced a Kentucky hunting license. The game warden looked at it, then reached over and grabbed the second duck, sniffed it's butt, and said, "This ain't no Kentucky duck. This duck's from Tennessee. You got an Tennessee licence?" The hillbilly reached into his wallet and produced an Tennessee license. The warden then reached over and picked up the third duck. "This duck's from Virginia. You got a Virginia hunting license?"Again the hillbilly reached into his wallet and brought out a Virginia hunting license. The game warden was extremely frustrated at this point, and he yelled at the hillbilly, "Just where the hell are you from?"The hillbilly turned around, bent over, dropped his pants, and said, "You tell me, you're the expert!" Question for British Columbians:
Is it legal for jobs to ask if I have a driver's licence if driving is not a job requirement?
I've only ever noticed this when job hunting in BC. In NS and Ontario, they never asked unless the job was related to driving. Like I feel like it's a roundabout way of them wanting you to have reliable transportation, yet I've come across a few job postings requiring a driver's licence (I don't drive) despite the job description not requiring me to drive or commute in any way?
And I'm very hesitant to apply to these jobs because of this. There are a couple like "Playground Monitor" that want me to have a valid licence, yet no part of the job description describes me driving the kids at all. Like this is not a "schoolbus driver" or "delivery driver" posting. And as someone looking to go to teacher's college I would really like to work somewhere childcare adjacent while applying to/attending teacher's college.
Maybe Reddit is a better place for me to ask this...

Almost the entire Tintin fandom is going to murder me after this post, but oh well
I need to get this off my chest and put my perfectly valid opinions out there in the world.
Now, a gentle disclaimer: I do not hate haddotin, you ship what you want. What gets on my nerves is people adamantly denying Tintin is a child of some degree.
Please, here me out.
I wish to do this in a debate style, a bit of a persuasive text of some sort. This is not to be a "HAHA YOU'RE WRONG" moment, this is simply me sharing my opinions because I am allowed to.
Alright.
I begin my argument on rebuttal to the opposition's perfectly valid arguments. Some such claims I have heard is that Tintin cannot be a child/teenager of any sort because he can drive a car, drink, rent an apartment, has a job as a journalist, etc.
First things first, we must discuss the time period. I will, for the sake of this debate, focus many on around ww2 and the 40s, as that is when Tintin began to really take off.
In Britain (and I imagine a lot of Europe,) children were permitted to leave school around the age of 14 until the 1944 Education Act that made schooling until 15 years of age compulsory. Children between the ages of 14-17 often worked full-time, making it very possible for Tintin to have been working as an adolescent. The average rent was also incredibly cheaper. In New York, the rent averaged to around $50, sometimes even less. With a full-time job, it was probable for Tintin to have rented a small, two roomed apartment until he became the greatest reporter in history and had the money for something bigger.
Journalism, especially in Belgium during ww2, was a whole other kettle of fish. Underground newspapers were everywhere, as Belgium was under German occupation, and there were many students who worked for the papers, a notable one being Le Faux Soir. It is VERY probable for a student as intelligent and capable as Tintin to have written reports for these newspapers and for him to have continued the line of work after the war, especially with papers the likes of Le Vingtiéme Scielce and, of course, Le Petit Vingtiéme.
Drinking laws were very different in the mid-20th century. Today, in the US, drinking is only permitted to those 21 years and older. In Australia and many other countries, it's 18. Germany and Belgium set it to 16, though in Germany you are allowed to drink beer, sparkling wine and other lighter drinks at 14. This is now. Back in the 20th century, there were ten-year-olds smoking cigarettes, so it is highly probable that teenagers could drink as well. Also, another note to point out, Tintin hardly ever drinks unless it's a celebration. He never drinks spirits and is often quick to turn down a beverage. The only two drinks I can think of him having are champagne and maybe possibly beer. On one occasion.
Driving is an interesting one. To this day in the US, some states permit driving practice to begin at 14. In Australia, it's 16. In the 40s, it was very possible that teenagers were driving around without licences (or with licences) and also, Tintin is a reporter. A world famous reporter. He flew a plane after only interviewing a pilot (and probably reading a lot on aviation because he strikes me as a plane lover). Driving a car is simple compared to that.
Now, I wish to give some points of my own.
Firstly, it is very hard to put an age on Tintin for a very simple reason: Tintin is timeless. Allow me to explain.
The first book, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, was published in 1929 and is quite obviously an anti-Soviet Union work of propaganda. It's written in the late 20s, or course it is. At this point Stalin has taken total power of Russia, it's officially completely communist and Stalin has begun to eye off surrounding smaller countries that used to be part of Imperial Russia and reclaim them as Russian territory. (Lithuania was not happy about that, but that's not relevant right now.) The fear of communist ideals were the new threat as ww1 had finished and Hitler hadn't come to power yet. Hence the propaganda.
On the other end of the spectrum is Tintin and the Alph-Art, Hergé's last work before he died in 1983. It's very evidently set in the 80s with modern art, crazy frizzy hairdos and vivid cities with neon lights. It's a complete contrast to the black and white 20s. Yet Tintin seems to have hardly aged in the whole 60 something years. He certainly looks a couple of years older than the the small Tintin is The Crab With the Golden Claws but that's really the only change we see with him. The biggest changes we see are his outfits, which go from the very 30s and 40s knickerbockers and newsboy hats to straight-legged pants and no hat. Tintin is a timeless character and therefore doesn't really have a specific age, but he does have an age range.
Secondly, if you Google how old Tintin is the official website says he's a teenager. Moving on.
Third point, (and in my opinion the most important;) the age group Tintin was written for. According to Google, the age group for the recommended audience is 9-14, though some of us started reading the books when we were younger... (cue 6-year-old me waving). If you read books as a child, you would know that the average age of the main characters is the same as the demographic they were written for.
Now, since Tintin was written for children and teenagers, he is most probably a teenager because that's what's relatable. Children often struggle to understand and relate to adults because we've never been adults. We don't know what its like to be an adult. Children's books have children characters because it's easier for children to see themselves in the book than if the character were all adults.
"But Bea," you may be saying, "how can a teenager or child or whatever he is go on such wild adventures? It doesn't seem realistic for a teenager to do these things." This is another thing people often forget: Tintin is fiction. We know that in fiction anything can happen, even the impossible. There are several children's books I grew up with featuring teenagers or even children going on absolutely wild adventures and almost dying, just like Tintin. The Ruby Redfort books by Lauren Child feature a 13-year-old spunky teen who ends up becoming a secret agent and almost enough in far too many accounts. We're talking chasing down the last wolf of a thought to be exciting species, surviving a wildfire, almost drowning in jade sand, dangling off ridiculously high buildings, tightrope walking across cities, the whole ordeal. The EJ12 book series is about an 11 year old Australian girl who joins a secret agency and travels the world fighting the evil spy agency SHADOW. The Famous Five, set in the 40s, is about a group of four kids and a dog who get roped into magnificent mysteries, often nearly getting kidnapped or shot or the likes. It's not impossible for children in books to be incredible heroes, because that's what kids imagine themselves as. If we all thought logically and didn't imagine things the world would be very dull indeed.
So, the main points? Tintin, in my opinion, is a teenager because he was designed to be read by children and teens. It's also important to learn about the time and era things were created in before jumping to conclusions. And it's also very important to remember that Tintin is fiction. He's not going to always make sense, like how he barely ages over the span of 60 years, or how he can fly a plane with no training. It's imaginative, and that's what makes it so exciting.
Now, how does haddotin work when Tintin is a teen and Haddock is a 40+ something old man? (Before anyone comes at me with the grey hair thing, my dad is fifty and has only a few grey hairs. I had a pure white hair at 14. Hair ages differently for everyone.)
Simple: you take a leaf out of the spideypool book and you change the ages. Voila. Yes, you can change the ages for your five and things, that's allowed. But when talking about Tintin himself, I personally think he is a teenager and I will guard this hill fervently.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. These are mine, and you have yours. That's fine. I just wanted to voice mine in a calm and hopefully notnjudgemental manner.
Thankbyou for making it this far
Also before someone starts disputing history with me, I have done serious research about Belgium in ww2 and Russia in the early 20th c, as well as planning a career as a modern historian. Please don't dispute unless you have done research yourself, in which case please feel free to educate me

I had this article from upworthy (a clickbaity fb page tbh) on my fb newsfeed the other day. some of the comments on it were the typical "bc they're so lazy and want mummy and daddy to drive them everywhere till the end of time!!!! they never want to grow up!!!!! the true meaning of a spoilt generation who'll always want to mooch off of everyone else!!!!" and the like. others were kinder, luckily, citing the ever climbing petrol (gas) prices in the US/worldwide, the skyrocketing prices of cars in the last couple years due to the pandemic, and the cost of driving lessons or car insurance etc etc. as valid reasons for young people to be dissuaded from driving in general, and also from getting their license.
for me, as a younger millennial/elder gen z/whatever the fuck a 1995 baby is, me not getting my Ls licence at 16 here in australia in 2011 and my Ps directly a year later at 17 in 2012 was inextricably linked to my mental health.
I've talked on many, many, many posts over my years on here about my struggles with getting my license. I couldn't go at 16, because I was ~vaguely suicidal~ and rather depressed/anxious; and most worryingly very attached to the emo kid thing of "crash my car just to feel again". I was filled with so much self loathing at the fact that I NEVER got to be 😎👹🤟 R E C K L E S S 😎👹🤟; that my first thought about learning to drive/having my Ps was to immediately crash a car into a tree or something else, just so people would believe that i was reckless and edgy and whatever the fuck other bs. and also maybe crashing a car would make people care about me more??? idek. i was really mentally unwell. period.
on the mildly safer flip side, this was very much linked to the annoying pop-punk theme of hating and escaping your hometown- which was a little more bearable and understandable. wrapped up in this was my belief that "escaping" to a uni 8 hours north of me would suddenly make me rich and famous (lmao fuck x10), so much so that i would come back to my shitty hometown and rub it in everyone who thought i was useless and embarrassing and whatever else, faces. which still isn't the best reason for learning to drive, either, let's be real here lmao. all in all, 16 year old me's mental health was a fucking trash fire: so why on fucking earth would you put her behind the wheel of a goddamned rolling death trap???
the last part of what stopped me learning to drive in high school was my marks at the end of it in 2013. when i got my ATAR (the uni entrance mark in new south wales) I got 38.25. for some bizarre reason I thought getting that mark made me "too stupid to learn how to drive"- quite literally. so I didn't even bother to pursue learning to drive till about early march (maybe) 2014.
when i finally went to my first driving lesson in 2014, i mistakenly unloaded some of the above info onto the instructor. by the end of my first lesson, she told me "your driving is so awful that no one in the Illawarra (our local area) will EVER BOTHER to teach you. stick with me, and you'll learn." so what did i do? i ditched that woman and didn't drive for another year.
when i got back to driving lessons in 2015, i think, at some point, my trainer with another driving school was great. i still wasn't getting consistent driving at home with my parent, bc he was also teaching my sibling. he also found me too stressful to teach, bc i was SO anxious that he just pushed it completely off on to the driving school instead. my lessons with this instructor were great (except for him always playing the radio during the lessons and that really distracted me). until my parent was like "uni is far more important than learning to drive. so focus on uni instead". so i dropped driving for another 6 months, by which time I was okayish at driving- but still hella anxious around trucks and during heavy traffic and doing reversing (which I still fucking hate and still gives me anxiety to this very day along with parking).
then I went back to it in 2016 or maybe 2017 again. in my first lesson with my 3rd instructor with the same driving school as the guy above (he'd left by the time I got back to it), we gelled. I finally got my licence in 2019 after two or three years of lessons and MANY failed tests (about 6 or 7 I can't remember now tbh). we stuck with me till the end. she eventually told me that she used me as a success story for anxiety as well, to all the kids who were incredibly anxious with driving.
my main reason for telling this story is because I imagine that I think many gen zer's would be the same. driving is incredibly anxiety inducing for many people, especially while they're learning. for example, when I began learning to drive my speed limit on my Ls was literally 70km/hr. which meant I was anywhere between 10 to 40 km/hr slower than everyone on highways- where the speed limit can be anywhere between 80 to 110 (for example the speed limit going to Sydney is 110km/hr- whereas the local highway I drive to work every day is 80km/hr and other parts of the highway are 90kms an hour). now the speed limit on Ls and your red Ps is 90.
but being on your Ls means that a vast majority of drivers will either aggressively overtake you, assert their road rage (usually assholes in jeeps and utes tbh), honk at you bc you're too slow (like sorry i can't go any faster on my Ls than 70 bro back in 2014, go fuck yourself). like i fucking hate driving so much, that i don't know why i even bothered buying my car tbh lmao.
just yeah. there's a myriad of reasons people don't want to or maybe even can't learn to drive; and for me it was mental health related and the fact I had to mature out of my angsty pop-punk and emo phase first as well. i shouldn't've had to meet the "standard" of getting my licence during high school when i very obvs wasn't ready or even mentally healthy for it at the time.
like. don't get me wrong, my mental health was still not the best when i was trying to get my licence in my early 20s.... considering i was hating very heavily on myself for not getting my licence at the right time like all my acquaintances from catholic school (*cue rich boy at tafe asking me in 2013 why I didn't have my licence yet*). but yeah. for many people, the whole getting your licence in high school thing just isn't possible, or let alone a good idea.
