begging you to analyse the shauna and melissa kiss scene/whole relationship in correlation to jackieshauna pretty please

well anon you’re in luck because that is all i’ve been thinking about since friday!! i’m going ham on this so there’s an essay under the cut x

we’ve all known that the jackieshauna best friendship was extremely homoerotic and layered from the jump, and now with shauna being confirmed bisexual, that’s all becoming very concrete. i’m a firm believer that this whole melissa shauna relationship is gonna get dark, and it’s probably going to end up in a scene where they’re kissing or fucking or something and shauna calls melissa jackie. i just feel like that’s inevitable.

shauna never stopped grieving jackie and her grief manifested into something really unhealthy. jackie is still waiting for her everywhere she goes, haunting her from behind her back. in my opinion, when melissa kissed shauna, she wasn’t really minding that it was melissa who kissed her, if that makes any sense. shauna just needed that physical touch that she had been craving for all these months, and by extension all those years with jackie.

shauna doesnt ever see herself being loved the way she is. shauna is scary and twisted and completely brutal and melissa LIKES that. a lot of what shocks shauna about someone loving her is that they can see those dark, terrifying parts of her and be attracted to that too- or at least see past it. shauna undeniably craves validation above all else, and being given that is just kind of a trip for her because she doesn’t ever see herself having it.

jackie didn’t see all those scary sides of shauna, because although in some way they were already there, they grew unattended after jackie’s death. shauna knew jackie loved her to some extent, but the key difference between melissa and jackie is that jackie could have never been exposed to, or by extension loved, shauna’s insanity because she caused it. the shauna in jackieshauna and the shauna in shalissa are two different people. melissa has the opportunity to have a crush on shauna in all her forms. jackie didn’t.

another thing about this dynamic between shauna and melissa is that shauna is in complete control. melissa is weak, and she submits to her. if shauna was the sidekick in her and jackie’s relationship, melissa is the sidekick in this one by a mile. shauna could absolutely eat her alive if she wanted to (no pun intended). when melissa tells shauna she isn’t afraid of her, shauna IMMEDIATELY proves her wrong and presses a fucking knife to her throat. she wants people to be afraid of her, she wants to be someone dominant because she never had that chance. she takes control of herself and others now because in the past everything she did was influenced by jackie.

i still have so much more to say on them but i have rambled on too long. maybe i’m reading them all wrong, but this is just my take! i wrote this at like 4 am and am now posting it 10 hours later because i forgot about it 😇 @cassioo i feel like you would enjoy this 🫶🏼 one of my first full length analyses in a while!!

"It was Gen's understanding that her and Melissa were equals in this, and they had that camaraderie that they shared where they were not included in this power hierarchy going on within this group. They were both always equals with each other, so there was that part of it where I think Gen felt kind of betrayed [by Melissa and Shauna], and also as her friend and not knowing. It was our mindset that it would be a stronger choice, just knowing what would unfold later on, that it blindsided Gen and she had no idea this was a thing until it started happening, which is why it initiated all this desire to get back in with Melissa, even if that meant befriending Shauna in a way that she hadn't. It was like this desire to, almost in a panic, 'I need my comfort person, and I'll do whatever it takes to be with that comfort person,' but obviously toward the end of this season, we start to see this battle of morality within Gen and what she thinks is right and what she thinks is worth it. So yeah, I think there was that betrayal and jealousy there, whether it was romantic or not, I think you can still have that betrayal and jealousy when it's purely platonic." - Vanessa Prasad
