I want a movie about a small time band doing the circuit of any backwater venue that will let them onstage, barely making ends meet but meeting interesting people along the way.
Oh, and this is all happening in space, they drive a spaceship that looks like a 1976 astro van with a faded mural on the side.

Just finished Last Exile
The aesthetics are peak and I am responding so unreasonably positively to this drab palette, camera shake, layered synth music, and artificial film grain. The particular flavor of machinery is also doing a lot for me.
Would have liked more episodes of 'underdog couriers Klaus and Lavie'. As much as I enjoyed the "show don't tell" aspects of the worldbuilding, it would have been nice to get more consistent exposure to how Blue/Claudia/water all go into Vanship fueling. I guess it's my priorities in world building shining through - much more interested in the sociological aspects of the magitek (why is Claudia both fuel and currency? How does water get purified and rated in Anatoray?) rather than the pure mechanical stuff like the big flying gunships, and it's easier to see those bits when the stakes are lower.
At the end of the day I can see why it is considered a cult classic among nerds that enjoy this stuff. Like, yes the floating space colony concept needed to be confirmed via supplemental material but man. So many concepts that have been thought out but only get a few min of screen time. This is my jam.
However I am really mad that none of the reviews actually mentioned that this was a goddamn harem show. I could forgive the love triangle but the kiss from the princess/XO was just so bizarre. Like, I know there was a stint of "different hair, different lady" trope being popular around this time but it was still so left field. The manga doesn't help by rehashing the Tatiana/Lavie/Claus bit again. And anecdotally can't tell if Claus' nobility heritage was just super obscure in world vs the author forgot but the whole bit with Tatiana's uncle was just one big eye roll. And mixed feelings on Alister somehow transforming into a drama lover.
The only character I really got attached to was Lavie but I could see glimmers of what might have made the other characters more compelling had they been presented better (Claus' obsession with finishing a job felt like there was more to unravel, Alex's angsty revenge plot didn't have quite enough meat to make me commit, and Dio's arc went out with a whimper. Also Mullin going back to be cannon fodder was pretty weird, what a confusing way of showing him figuring himself out.)
Also the ending theme slaps, while the opening is also growing on me like mold.
Time to watch the much bouncier looking sequel.

Last exile is such a old gem. I saw it back then as a child but only the first episode but this anime stuck in my mind till today and I treat myself with the whole Serie 👁️👄👁️ This is my oc for Last exile: Aria Duncan a mechanic. She served under Laady Sophia and was transferred to the Silvana as an escort for her. She owes her scar to her curiosity and ignorance while tinkering with the vanship back then in her teen. (a explosion was the result of her work.)

Just finished Fam of the Silver Wing, and it got me thinking about The Force Awakens. Because hey, look, they made a sequel with a female protagonist that doesn’t suck!
Like, no spoilers, but Tatiana does not need Fam to teach her how to make the red vanship run properly. Neither is the notoriously prickly Princess of the Silvana instantly smitten with Fam. And if Tatiana were to die, nobody would hug Fam and ignore Alister.

A Morning in Norkia
Another show I’m a big fan of is Last Exile, the steampunk adventure by Studio Gonzo. It explains nearly *nothing* to the audience, making half the fun of watching it come from trying to figure it out. I still don’t understand it fully, and I love that.
Anyway, I Forged a few ships from it while I was making the Yukikaze.
Tumblr media
The two main characters pilot this small courier craft, called a “vanship”. I made a flyable version...
Tumblr media
...and a prop version that has seats you can actually sit in. Flying it around with no one in the cockpit does look pretty weird, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also made a couple battleships. Unfortunately, neither is to scale with the vanship (which is itself out of scale with players), so I prefer to think of all this as just regular old art. Not much chance of these being used in a map; they take up *enormous* amounts of budget.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried my hand at recreating a shot from the show’s opening. Sadly, these ships alone consume ~90% of the object budget, so I can’t be 100% faithful to the source and fill the sky with more of them.
Tumblr media
I tried to script a bunch of explosion FXs to make it look like the two ships were duking it out, but for whatever reason, they refused to obey the timing I gave them. Instead of being staggered, they would all fire at once--which isn’t exactly the effect I was going for. Oh well.

Here is Kurohime Aragaki! Daughter of Ingo and Shinjiro Aragaki! She is rather gloomy and depressive, and tends to be more nihilistic and logic driven rather then emotionally driven, on the left is Kurohime’s design as a child and on the right is Kurohime’s design as a teenager, feel free to draw her.

Last Exile (ラストエグザイル, Rasuto Eguzairu) is a Japanese animated television series created by Gonzo. It featured a production team led by director Koichi Chigira, character designer Range Murata, and production designer Mahiro Maeda.
Plot
The story is set on the fictional world of Prester, where its inhabitants use aerial vehicles known as vanships as a means of transportation. On this world which is divided in eternal conflict between the nations of Anatoray and Disith, sky couriers Claus Valca and Lavie Head must deliver a girl who holds the key to uniting the two factions. Although Prester itself is not a representation of Earth, it features technology reminiscent of nineteenth century Europe at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.
