Wow did this book hold my attention! The novel was written in such a way that the tension and eerie-ness was palpable throughout its entirety, and the rhyme gave me chills. While the premise itself was interesting, it also reminded me of The Whisper Man by Alex North, but with a few differing twists. The characters within this book at times felt unrealistic, but I found them to be intriguing. The old tensions between Callum and some of the townsfolk made for a captivating read, and it was interesting watching Callum sort through the evidence and work out the truth at the heart of things. I very much enjoyed the alternating timelines and how the mysteries tied into each other, but I felt like some of the deeper topics were unexplored. That being said, the discussions the book had were done well, and they added a lot of depth into the overall storyline. I've had an absolute ball reading this with others via @tandemcollectiveglobal . Thank you, Tandem, for organising & publisher, @harpercollinsaustralia for the copy of the book. The novel opens with our protagonist, Callum Haffenden, returning (somewhat reluctantly) to Granite Creek. Despite his hesitation, he is implacably drawn to the latest missing person case in Granite Creek. Despite his dread of his past, of the whispering, he must, once and for all, discover the truth. Gorgeous description of setting though somewhat creepy and uncomfortable but very atmospheric. It's a very clear picture of a grey world with unremitting drizzle (sometimes drenching!) combined with humidity-related sweat which lend the mystery ever more intriguing. As Callum continued to dig in the current mystery, his mind is also slowly clearing up his murky memory of the past. Hand in hand along with secrets the townspeople carried and hid, Veronica Lando wove an intricate mystery replete with smokescreens and suspense. A powerful and thrilling read! QTD: can you spot all green frogs? My 7yo had fun doing that and was rewarded by being allowed to eat them 🤣 And do you know that you just can't rock up at Woolies to buy a pack of them?!
