前に書いた気がしていたけど、書いてなかったようなのでDJのコントローラの話。

しばらく前に写真のVestaxのVCM-100を買った。正確な値段は忘れてしまったけど、一部反応しないボタンがあるとかで難あり品で、2,000円くらいだった。でも一回分解掃除をして、緩んでるネジを締め直したりしたらほぼ全部動くようになった。一部反応が悪いボタンはあるけど、まあそんなに使わない所だからいいかな…。

このVCM-100は出た当時（15年前くらい？）は、すごくほしかったけど、高くて全然手が出なかったもの。この手のコントローラでは珍しく、ボリュームがロータリー、さらに全体がかなりコンパクト（今では大きめな方かもだけど、当時はこんな小さいのなかった）、4outのオーディオインターフェース内蔵、と今見てもなかなかいい機種な気がする。昔ハウスのロングミックスに憧れたので、プラッターはそんなにいらないし、とにかくボリュームがロータリーは嬉しい。

そして今では考えられない金属ボディで1.8kgという重さでびっくり（笑）。重いほうが使ってるときに動いたりしなくていいんだけど、「軽量・コンパクト」な機材が受ける今では絶対流行らないだろうな～。でも重いけど、おそらく各パーツがしっかりしているせいか、掃除した程度でまだまだ使えるというのはすごい。信頼性高そうだし、モノとしてもかっこいいし、やっぱりいいな。重いけど。

ただ、欲を言えばエフェクト用のノブがいくつかほしかったなあ…。別のMIDIコントローラをつないでエフェクトはそっちでやってもいいんだけど、ここにオンオフとDry/Wetくらいだけでもついてたら最高だった。でも別のコントローラをつなぐのを試しにやってみたら、ボリュームの調整で手一杯で、エフェクトかける余裕はなかった。

ソフトはDjay Proがよさそう。やっぱりTraktorなのかなと思ったけど、それほど難しいこともしないし、Djay Proで十分かな…。Djay ProはVCM-100がほぼ完璧に対応していて、すぐ使えるのもありがたい。15年前に比べると、PCDJも色々変わったんだなあ…。ちなみにTraktorでVCM-100は使えないことはないものの、微妙だった。元々Traktor向けのコントローラのはずだけど、Traktor側のバージョンが上がってしまったからか…。

金曜の本番に向けて準備もしないとだけど、あんまりかけるもの決めすぎてもつまらないなあという気もするし、塩梅が難しい…。

The mixer I’ve used since about 1998. It finally broke and I’m getting it (hopefully) repaired at Condor in Seattle. Once I was DJ’ing at a big bar in Brooklyn (66 Water Street in DUMBO) and a huge brawl broke out on the dancefloor, and a pint glass full of beer sailed past my head (I remember because it was almost full but flying upright and the whole thing seemed like it was in slow motion) and then another one shattered all over my mixer. I was picking glass out of the crossfader for a few years after that but it still worked. Until now
