Final Fantasy I liveblogging (4/5)

From waterfall to Floating Castle.

Hm... I went to the tower and immediately encountered a huge medusa mob, and 3 out of my 4 party members got petrified (everyone except my Ribbon-wearing White Wizard). Is... is that supposed to happen? I might come back sometime later...

Interesting, R. Ankylos are easier than Ankylos.

Okay I’m back from the waterfall with an extra Ribbon.

These Sand Worms look really metal. They killed my Ninja even though he was wearing a Protect Ring? That’s sad...

These vampires hit for crazy damage but they’re not petrifying me so I consider that a step up.

“Catman”... (It poisoned my White Wizard even though he was wearing a Ribbon? Man... I guess status protection only applies to a limited set of attacks.)

Oh god, Chimeras have Cremate.

Oh wow, some equipment I just got for the Knight drastically reduced Cremate damage. Now it’s all in the low double-digits for everyone rather than ~75 damage to my Knight every time.

Hm... okay, picking this up after it’s been a while and I’m a bit lost as to what I’m supposed to be doing. Oh yeah, I think I’m going to this tower in the desert.

I am returning to this game after like a year? (Last save state: 29 March 2021 omggg 😱) Apparently I am in the Floating Castle. I am very lost but okay let’s keep pressing forward.

And now there is an “Evilman” enemy...

Tiamat was okay. Very hard-hitting, and strong defense -- my strongest attackers were only doing about ~100 damage apiece each turn, while everyone else was doing, like, 3 damage. Basically had three of my party on fulltime healing duty to keep my Ninja alive. Luckily, Tiamat never did the attack that does ~250 damage twice in a row on my Ninja as that would have finished him off.

To be honest, I just sped through this dungeon. From the FAQ, none of the equipment looked essential so I just skipped 75% of the rooms here.

All four orbs are glowing! Time to go to the Temple of Fiends again.

Beginning Liveblog For GVH and Snoot

So, been...wrestling with how to start this review process.

(gods, am I reviewing Snoot Game? Is that the right word for this?) I've done one playthrough of Goodbye Volcano High and I thought it was amazing. Of the voiced visual novels, I put it pretty high up there. The representation is on point, I still listen to several of the songs and its the first time I've gotten 100s on musical sections, and overall it stuck to its guns on the ending. But, there's been the specter looming over the whole thing with the existence of Snoot Game. It feels like only addressing Jeckle without addressing Hyde. After wrestling with it, I think I'll go ahead and knock out Snoot Game, get myself intermeshed. So what do I know thus far about Snoot Game going in? o Created by 4chan either out of annoyance to the LGBTQIA+ representation in GVH's trailer or as a shit post. o Involves a self insert Anon character as PoV o Directly stole art assets from GVH's twitter to make o Rushed out to try to intercept GVH's launch - which is kinda impressive. o Ending wrestles largely with "saving" Fang or allowing them to be "doomed" to be Nonbinary. Which can include, a school shooting at the end. o Fan base seems to be 75% Spanish speaking? o Creators have gone on since to continue to use art design from GVH for other projects, which is in and of itself, impressive. So, with all that, we're gonna get messy.

We are, of course, taking this opportunity to elaborate on some previously unestablished lore - or, rather, established lore not yet written on the blog, because we've been DEARLY enjoying tossing our sona mechanics at the wall while doing brainstorm-with-friends chatter. To host a god isn't a light thing, you see. Even if it's only partial. Anyways Discord screenshots, some minor chatter, and slightly more art below cut.

NECESSARY CONTEXT: The Mantis God may possess any mantis it pleases, provided that they are a mantis. This notion may be a bit "loose" - as hosts who are purely mantises, by the modern standard, may be less than ideal. The small must always struggle with being small. Ambush predators, well-developed claws and carnivorous diets, taur-like body schemes, the sorts of predators who can lay in wait for ages before striking, may be viable - being an insect will aid the chance of viability, but not ensure it. With sapient hosts, more abstract features may be key.

The Mantis God's possession will favor the cunning, the keen, the level-headed. Patience is a virtue, as well as ruthlessness - if a character can be reasonably anthromorphized as a mantis, they are likely to be viable for possession. In order to be possessable, a host must retain some resemblance of dignity, reservation, poise - though they need not keep this face at all times, "most of the time" is enough.

As such, Siffrin is not necessarily a viable host. They can be "piggybacked" on, certainly, but not fully controlled - they will remember everything that is done under possession, they may resist or refuse actions, they are fully present in their own body and simply dealing with a backseat driver rather than dealing with a "full" possession.

A partial possession, though not a full possession, does cause some physical effects - a gold tint, in the iris, or a line of gold around the edges of the pupil - but it does not cause full effects. The claws that generally indicate a host, rather than sprouting from the host's shoulderblades, will instead originate from somewhere behind them, sprouting from some unknown point outside of the field of view of the viewer. These will always end just "behind" the host, from the point of view of an observer, regardless of angle viewed, and may appear at multiple different angles with multiple observers - though whether they can be viewed at all largely depends on if an observer is the sort of person likely to be capable of viewing what's functionally just an abstraction of the possession process.

I'm only a little way into the third fourth level of Chants of Sennaar but I think it would be great if the way you learn the Alchemist glyph for "little" is for a guy who looks like this to just come up and start ranting at you
