Amaranthine - Chapter 17 - All on You

“You have everything?” Luka asked.
Marinette finished gathering her supplies and headed to the back alley with Luka. She nodded and pulled the tarp off her motorcycle.
“You’ll be careful, right?” Luka asked.
“I will. I have Longg watching my back. If Adrien is our mad butterfly, we have an opportunity to bring him down.”
“I know, I’m just worried. It’s still Adrien and his eyes are set on you.”
“I know. It terrifies me doing this, but I’d prefer my house to be free of fairies. Unless you’re one of those that likes being watched,” Marinette added teasingly.
Luka laughed dryly. “That’s to assume your dragon isn’t already doing that.”
‘Oh, I see how it is. You two think you’re special? You know how many creatures of all species I’ve seen do that same shit? Nonetheless, expect some pointers once all this bullshit is over with,’ Longg’s voice echoed in Marinette’s head.
Marinette shook her head. “I’m not even going to go there, Longg. Also, keep your snide remarks to a minimum please. I don’t need to be distracted.”
Longg laughed. ‘Good luck with that today.’
Marinette sighed and got on the bike. “Alright, I need to get going. Zoe should be there by now, so I’ll be a tad more comfortable there.”
‘Oh, what am I? Chopped liver?’
Marinette groaned. She gave Luka a quick kiss, started her bike, and headed out. She arrived before long, pulling up into the driveway. She parked beside a sleek red car before she headed up the stairs. She went to knock when the doors opened. Shock washed over her seeing a tall, lean man dressed in a suit with dark purple hair and a gentle face with droopy eyes.
Longg snarled. ‘Nooroo!’
Marinette fought to hide her shock when Nooroo addressed her.
“Greetings! You must be the florist. Marinette Dupain-Cheng, yes?”
“Yes.”
“Wonderful. Mistress Kagami and Zoe are already here. They’re in the sitting room indulging in our finest delicacies while they wait for you. Come, follow me.”
Marinette followed Nooroo to the sitting room. Zoe and Kagami sat opposite each other while they feasted on tiny cakes and other sweet treats. Zoe waved enthusiastically while Kagami shot Marinette a side eye, then took a sip of her tea. Marinette sucked in a breath before she took a seat across from Kagami.
“Pleasure to meet you. I’m Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
“I see. I’m Kagami Tsurugi, but you’re to refer to me as Tsurugi-sama, got it?”
Zoe scoffed. “Oh, c’mon, Ice Queen, ease up. Your competition is me.”
“For you to be my competition, you would need to be my rival, and you are not worthy of being more than a mere nuisance. Unlike Marinette.”
“Uh, what do you mean?” Marinette asked.
“You’re the girl that was with Adrien. The one that was launched into the sky by Midnight. The one that has Adrien’s heart.”
Marinette sighed. “I beg your pardon, Tsurugi-sama. Adrien may have feelings for me, but my heart will never be his. Rather it belongs to my boyfriend.”
Kagami blinked while Zoe jumped up and sat beside Marinette.
“Is it Luka? Please tell me it is. I haven’t seen you two together too often, you know, since we just met, but you just see the longing in his eyes when he looked at you. Is it? Actually, hold up.”
Zoe leaned in and sniffed Marinette, then squealed. Marinette raised a brow and looked down. The once silver ring on Zoe’s index finger was black with a green pawprint on it.
“I smell his cologne on you. It has to be him. Unless there’s another man that wears the same brand.”
“He actually doesn’t wear cologne. That’s likely his natural musk you’re smelling.”
“Really? Meow, it’s nice. Far better than all that cologne that Adrien wears. I mean, don’t get me wrong, he’s sexy and all, but he doesn’t need that much. It’s like the damn idiot men I knew back in the states that loved to bathe in their abhorrent body spray.”
“Oh, don’t I know. It was like setting off an air freshener bomb, but worse. At least those usually smelled like pumpkin or cotton, not whatever the body spray was,” Marinette added.
“Exactly! I hate men sometimes. Well, more than sometimes.”
Marinette raised a brow. “Then why are you pursuing Adrien?”
Zoe looked away as she played with her hair. “Well, I just don’t feel like I’ll be worth anything to my half family, except towards Chloe. She’s always been in my corner, unlike our mother. I know Audrey’s words are meant to hurt me and I shouldn’t take them to heart, but I do. I don’t see a worth in myself for the family, and don’t get me started on my father. So, I figured I’d do this. Maybe marrying an influential man and being his baby machine would finally give me value to my family.”
Marinette winced as Longg hissed.
‘Such vile people. Where’s the mother? I’m suddenly hungry,’ Longg snarled.
“Zoe, you shouldn’t do this for that reason,” Marinette said.
Zoe opened her mouth but was cut off by Kagami.
“I suppose you and I are more similar than I first gave us credit for. Granted your inferiority is different than the expectations placed on my shoulders,” Kagami muttered.
“How so, Tsurugi-sama?”
“I agreed to this because of my mother. She expects nothing short of perfection and when Adrien gained the influence and power he did, she had her heart set on marrying me off to him. I’m simply expected to win his hand and produce a suitable heir to both our companies. Love is not a factor in the equation but is a very dangerous variable. Hence my aggression towards you and how you’ve snatched away Adrien’s heart.”
“I’m sorry, but your mothers are absolutely nuts,” Marinette remarked.
Kagami sneered. “Watch what you say about my mother. She made countless sacrifices for me and to ensure I had a secure future. The very least I can do is this.”
“I… see. Forgive me, Tsurugi-sama.”
“You are forgiven this time. Don’t let it happen again.”
Marinette sucked in a breath as she got out her notepad and pen. She looked up as she saw Nooroo enter the room, holding a silver tray. He placed down a new platter of colorful pastries, refilled the teacups, and placed one down for Marinette. Her stomach turned uneasily at the sickeningly sweet scent of everything.
“Is there anything in particular you’d like, Miss Marinette?” Nooroo asked.
Marinette smiled and shook her hands. “Oh, no. I ate before I came here.”
“Are you sure?”
“Oh, yeah. Even so, I have my own snacks. I didn’t want to impose after all.”
“And yet you’re still here,” Kagami remarked.
“Mistress Kagami, she’s here to get ideas for the commission Master Adrien ordered,” Nooroo reminded.
“Actually, I think I have all I need to make it now,” Marinette interjected.
“Oh? Then allow me to get Master Adrien. He’ll want to discuss that with you.”
Marinette slowly nodded. She folded her hands in her lap and bowed her head while Nooroo left. Zoe attempted a conversation with her, but she blocked out Zoe and closed her eyes. The light behind her eyes faded to red. She didn’t see a dragon but felt Longg’s essence around her. She made her unease known at having to face Adrien.
‘I wish I could say everything will be fine, but we’ll need to expect the absolute worst. This will be when he puts all his cards on the table. This is the moment we keep our cards close.’
Marinette hummed. She played through the memories that Longg shared with her from her previous life. When she was captured, imprisoned, and burned at the stake. She waited in silence before Longg spoke.
‘If it comes to that, I will carry out the deed. I won’t see you live as an abomination of nature.’
Fear shot through Marinette.
‘I’m sorry, but, if he takes you, there’s no telling what he’ll do to you. The butterfly is that of transformation. Should he will it, he could forever warp you, twist you to his desires. I… - don’t breathe!’
Marinette startled as the red essence faded to a mesmerizing purple. Her eyes shot open to see herself in a thick fog. She listened to Longg’s words and held her breath, thankful Longg refreshed the air in her lungs. She used the power of wind to clear away the fog. Her blood ran cold seeing Atropa, Carmine, Rena, Zoe, and Kagami all knocked out around her.
“Have a lovely chat?” Adrien asked.
Marinette’s eyes snapped to Adrien, who sat across from her. Bile caught in her throat seeing him transformed. He was topless with his toned, large muscular body shining in all its glory. Long blue ombre gloves covered his arms up to his bulging biceps. A long deep turquoise ombre skirt covered his lower half with a white sash in the middle. His beach blonde hair was slicked back with a trio of blue butterflies in it. To complete the ensemble was a pair of large blue fairy wings.
Marinette paled as terror consumed her that mingled with Longg’s rage. She fought to look in his eyes, but couldn’t shake the feeling as if she were face-to-face with the king of the fairy court. She cleared her throat, finally finding her voice.
“What have you done to them?”
“Don’t worry, they’re alive. For the moment.”
Marinette snarled. “Then begin with your demands already.”
Adonis’s wings quivered. “Your anger is enrapturing. But not as much as your fear.”
“Is this payback for the past few days?”
“Never against you, my dear. No, I’m just taking back what always should have always been mine.”
Marinette’s eyes widened as she felt her and Longg’s shock. “I was never yours.”
“Not in this life, but you were supposed to be once so long ago. Our love was perfect. No one could come between us. We were once set to be married, until he came along. The wretched snake. Fitting miraculous for him,” Adonis sneered.
“Get on with it.”
“Well, let’s just say once he was in the picture, your heart changed. You loved him as well, but you were willing to give your life for him and not me. And so you did. No matter how hard I try, I always lost you to him. He’d enter your life and no matter what I did to drive you two apart, it always ended in you dying for him. But no more.”
“And what are you going to do this time?”
Adonis smirked. “Simple. You have a choice. Your pet seems to have warned you as you haven’t taken a single breath. I feared I wouldn’t be able to get you once you put Longg on, until I found your friends. See, they’ve inhaled the faerie fog and, for Kagami and Zoe, eaten faerie food. Unlike most fog and food, these have been altered. Should I snap my fingers, they will all transform into horrific monsters, ravage the Earth, and be stuck like that until they die.”
Marinette’s eyes widened. “Why? Why do this?”
“Oh, darling, how stupid do you think I’d be? You’d think I share everything with your lizard around?”
“Fine. So, what? I refuse and you turn them into monsters, but if I stay with you, you’ll let them go?”
“Almost. I have a few expectations. You’ll choose me and be my mate, giving me your body and soul. You’ll renounce that dreadful lizard, and that lizard will stay far away from you. Lastly, you’ll partake in the faerie food to seal this covenant. Agree to these, and I’ll ensure that they at least die.”
Marinette’s stomach dropped. The entire deal terrified her while Longg raged. She looked down at her comrades and assessed the situation. Adonis is alone, so that means he was able to bring down four holders without so much as an injury. If four could fall so easily, what could one do? Furthermore, he wanted her to eat the faerie food. Did he seek to change her? If he did, what would he do to her?
“Clock’s ticking, my dearest.”
Marinette snarled. She looked down at herself, at Longg on her. An idea crossed her mind. She snapped her head up and glared at Adonis.
“I will agree, but they live. If they die or are transformed, then I die at the hands of nature.”
“She wouldn’t-,” Adonis started.
“She has and will again. It was her that lit my pyre. Remember the pyre?”
Adonis frowned. “I do. I tried to stop it, but the flames lit before I could get a word out.”
“Then I’ll agree to your terms so long as you allow everyone here to leave with Longg. And should they transform, she will kill me, and you’ll get to watch me die. However, you’ll have the satisfaction knowing I died because of you instead of Luka.”
Adonis glared at Marinette as he weighed his options.
“Clock’s ticking, Adonis.”
Adonis tsked. “Very well. They’ll go free, but she’s to leave with them immediately. Anyone she leaves behind will die.”
Longg huffed. ‘I agree to this. But, Marinette, before you renounce me, I want to say something to just you. I will save you. No matter what he makes you into, I will find a way to restore you. You will live a long life with your soulmate. I promise that.’
A tear slid down Marinette’s face. “And so it shall be. Longg, I renounce you.”
Longg emerged from the choker necklace as the necklace disappeared. She wasted no time gathering up the Atropa, Carmine, Rena, Zoe, and Kagami and then left. She glanced back at Marinette, the hope and promise burning bright in her eyes.
“See you soon,” Longg said.
“See you soon,” Marinette whispered.
Longg transformed into Guenevere, crashed through a nearby window, and took off.
Adonis smiled and stood. He scooped up one of the pastries and transformed it into a pomegranate. He split it in two and handed one half to Marinette. She gulped as she stood and took it. She took a deep breath and looked up at him. His features had softened, but the fear remained.
“Marinette, my flower, with this fruit, our covenant shall be sealed. I will be your husband. I will keep you safe from anything untoward and fill your life and yourself with the upmost bliss. With our bond, we’ll usher in something new and wonderful with our love to give it form. Together, the world will be ours as we fill it with our love. So shall it be.”
Fear ate away at Marinette. Words that should be sweet and loving dripped with a sickly-sweet poison. What did Adonis have planned? What was her role in it? What would he change her into? She swallowed hard as she pushed down the thoughts. She raised the pomegranate to her lips, closed her eyes, and uttered a silent prayer:
To the personification of nature, hear my prayer. Send your elements unto to give me strength and protect me. Send your wind to keep my spirit at ease and free. Send the earth to keep my center grounded so I never forget myself. Send your water to fill me and pull me under. Send your fire to keep my soul alit and burn anything untoward.
A warm, invisible embrace surrounded Marinette that put her at ease. She shed one final tear before she and Adonis ate their pomegranates.
