Essential mom movement cool down from a morning bike ride! . 🧐Why is this an essential mom movement? Because life does not stop after my ride. I must be able to “perform” as a mom all day. Too many movements to go through here...a blog post, maybe! . Here I am using @powerplateusa and @viprpro to put some motion back into my hips and lumbosacral fascia. . Although cycling is in and out of the saddle, it is all in the flexed position. So I want to move from flexion into other extension, rotation, ab/adduction. Basically, I need to rehydrate and decompress. . All of these movements can be done on the ground but the @powerplateusa adds a bottom up stimulus in all three planes of motion. . @viprpro is a tool, I feel every Mom should get as a part of their postpartum tool kit. Can you see how these patterns help with my diastasis and take care of my pelvic floor? Think hip mobility, rib position and lumbar mobility. . Here I am using tilting patterns to help my body use the the range of motion that I gain through the stretch. . Notice how I change hand positions which is a unique feature to ViPR. ESSENTIAL MOM MOVEMENT CIRCUIT: Exercise 3 . Here I am back with my 6kg ViPR performing a simple combo. . I am in the garage which is a flat, smooth surface so I added the yoga mat for a bit of texture and proprioceptive input. . Ideally this could be done barefoot on an Earth 🌏 surface (like sand or grass) to add a natural input from the bottom up. The feet are huge for adding input up to the pelvic floor. You can see how they react to decelerate the lunge and drive from the ViPR! Isn’t that cool!! . Now onto the ViPR pattern. The lateral lunge with a same side diagonal shift @ ankle is a tremendous mobilization through the arm lines and chest. . Moving front to back in the sagittal plane with an upper cut to a downward chop gives great input to the hips but my focus is mobility through my thoracic spine without overly recruiting my core. . 💁🏻‍♀️How does this apply to moms? . Think about the many hours spent reaching forward and down: nursing, holding, carrying. All of these movements can lock down the thoracic spine. . When that happens, you don’t get good motion through the ribcage which affects breathing and also proper loading and unloading of the abdominal wall and core. . Again, this is not step 1️⃣ but much further down the line. Loading the myofascial lines through varying angulations with the breath creates a functional stability! . ESSENTIAL MOM MOVEMENT CIRCUIT: Exercise 6️⃣ . Now we are back to the 6kg ViPR and a variable reach pattern. . In exercise 1️⃣ I had a static staggered stance foot position and changed the direction of my arm reach. . Here I change both trying to create a big “movement bubble” around me driving my hips back or around and the ViPR all different directions. . The step combined with the reach requires my deceleration across different lines of force every rep. . This improves resilience and protects me from injury...start with body weight and progress! . I am moving in a controlled full range of motion here with my breath to subconsciously enhance the pelvic floor integration. Check out @pelvicore_pro and @garywynngray for the applied functional science approach to pelvic floor training. . You could also do a short and fast range of motion or make it reactive with cuing from a coach or another reactive device. This enhances brain integration. A series of lunges with variable reaches picking up babies or toys or the 1/2 eaten apple 🍎 on the floor. #diastasisrecti Beware of the misinformation about having a diastasis. I have had two sets of twins and my abdominal wall had been stretched to the max! I have functional diastasis; which means that although I have a gap, the tensioning across the fascia is good. #loadedmovementtraining #nutrientdensefoods #grayinstitute Resilience and mobility through my hips are key to maintaining great function across my abdominal wall. Motherhood demands movement in variable and unpredictable ranges of motion. Many times these movements are performed in a fatigued and distracted state. If you are caring for more than one child, your brain is functioning on overload. Being able to subconsciously move through the variable ranges of motion safely is key. Loaded movement sequence for moms! One of the joys of having small children is moving with them. Often times one or more is physically attached to you. Wouldn’t it be fabulous to be a kangaroo or a gorilla 🦍 where they can attach themselves to you and hang on? Sorry, that’s a bit of my silly thought process. 😁 All you Moms know we have a favorite hip to carry babies. That’s ok, just make sure you can use both hips. WHAT A GIFT! That is what I think to myself when I have the privilege of working with this great group! In this drill, I assigned a color to four patterns. Red: squat with anterior tilt Orange: alternating anterior lunge with tilt Yellow: anterior tilt Green: lateral lunge with same side tilt The group just learned the patterns so they had to recall the pattern using a different name. That’s huge!! Our goal was to challenge their brains along with exploring important ranges of motion. #vipr for senior populations is so impactful!
