38. Woe Strider - 5e
Tumblr media
The first of two fifth edition monsters to make it to this list.  That’s mostly because their aren’t a lot of aberrations of 5e that are specifically relegated to 5e.  As you go down to further and further editions, the less unique creatures you are likely to get at this point probably.  I believe there were only 3 for me to choose from in total from 5e that were not variants.  5e has somewhat the problem of Pahtfinder 2e, with most monsters only getting one to three paragraphs.  The Woe Strider is no exception, with only one paragraph.  Yet even with that it leaves a carnal impression.  I should mention that I know this is a Magic thing, but that doesn’t take things off of being considered even if I’m kinda eh on that being a thing over all.  Really I don’t know what can be said beyond their single paragraph, but essentially a Woe Strider is a soul that has broken free from the workings of destiny.  To specify, this is not from death but from something that occurs in life, otherwise this might be an outsider.  No, this is a perversion of life and the transformation is likely as harrowing as what they now do.  In all of their horrid pain, a Woe Strider seeks to reunite itself with the flow of the universe by committing profane rituals of divination.  It will kill only t divine a path in the viscera, assist in apocalypse only to make certain the prophecies of a cult, and interpret the lives and deaths of shattered communities to ascertain the fate that must lie in the wreckage.  When it ultimately fails, it is said to rip the universe and minds apart with its cries, though no mechanic is actually assigned to this lore beat (I’d advise doing so).  This is delightful.  So rarely do we get creatures that interact with the school of divination and I don’t think there are any creature that explores its depth and possibilities so completely.  This has so many possible ways it can be taken in, from the cursed enemy that is somewhat pitiable to an accursed villain that delights in the depravity of destiny.  Don’t neglect the fact that this is a creature with telepathy and can very much be made into a negotiable villain.  Unfortunately, it is rather low an intelligence, but still high enough that it could think independent of a beast and advance itself.  It has some great mechanics in equaling out magical threats, with an antimagic cone that can be changed and a bite that can cause items to go temporarily inert.  This isn’t the same as being immune to magic, this is an actual obstacle the party can work around so I think its far more admissible as a Big Bad than creatures that are immune.  I will say I feel kind of like its mechanics should’ve gone a bit more into the divination aspect instead of this odd antimagic bend that doesn’t wholly line up with the lore.  But its still very effective.

Devourers in the 13th Age
Another of the very first conversions I did, before my Patreon was a thing, was the special devourers in the 4e Monster Manual. This was right after Volo’s Guide had been released and converted the regular devourer to 5e, so I made the viscera and soulspike devourers to round out the number. Now all of them are available with a 13th Age conversion. These were a bit of a challenge to get the wordings and ideas across properly, but I think they work out well.
Spirit Devourer Large 5th level spoiler [undead] Initiative: +7 Vulnerability: holy Shredding claws +10 vs. AC - 20 damage Natural 16+: The spirit devourer can make a trap spirit attack as a free action. [Special trigger] C: Trap spirit +10 vs. PD (one nearby humanoid or giant enemy) - 20 negative energy damage and the target disappears and is trapped inside the spirit devourer’s chest. While trapped, the target can’t take any actions and must begin making last gasp saves. Failing the fourth last gasp save kills the character, and the spirit devourer recovers 75 hit points and can use trap spirit as an interrupt. If the creature successfully saves, its soul breaks free and reappears engaged with the devourer. A trapped creature automatically escapes if the spirit devourer dies. Only one creature can be trapped at a time. Miss: 10 negative energy damage. Devour spirit: When the spirit devourer starts its turn with a trapped soul, it can choose to either regain 10 hit points or use spirit rupture as a quick action on that turn. [Special trigger] C: Spirit rupture + 10 vs. PD (all engaged enemies) - 10 negative energy damage Natural even hit: The target is stuck until the end of the spirit devourer’s next turn. Spirit ward: The spirit devourer gains a +2 bonus to all defenses while it has a trapped soul. Negative energy resistance 16+: When a negative energy attack targets the spirit devourer, the attacker must roll a natural 16+ on the attack roll or it only deals half damage. AC 20 PD 15 MD 17 HP 150
This cadaverous creature traps the spirit of a living humanoid inside of its ribcage. This spirit manifests as a small, emaciated effigy of the trapped creature that thrashes in agony as the devourer uses it for unholy fuel. These trapped souls never last long, their essence used up to feed the devourer’s attacks and heal any wounds it has, and so the devourer constantly hunts for more prey to feast on.
Viscera Devourer 6th level spoiler [undead] Initiative: +8 Vulnerability: holy Claws +10 vs. AC - 10 damage C: Hungry Viscera +11 vs. PD (one nearby enemy) - 5 damage Natural even hit: The target pops free from all enemies, is dragged to engage the viscera devourer, and is grabbed. The devourer has 4 tendrils, each of which can grab a single target, or it can use multiple tendrils to grab a single target. A grabbed creature takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls for each tendril grabbing it beyond the first. Quick use: This attack only requires a quick action. C: Devour viscera +11 vs. PD (all grabbed creatures) - 10 negative energy damage and the viscera devourer regains 5 hp. Visceral ward: The viscera devourer gains a +2 bonus to all defenses while it is grabbing at least one creature. Negative energy resistance 14+: When a negative energy attack targets the viscera devourer, the attacker must roll a natural 16+ on the attack roll or it only deals half damage. AC 21 PD 19 MD 15 HP 80
This devourer wraps its drooling intestines around nearby foes. The gnashing mouths that tip its viscera latch onto flesh, allowing the creature to drain the life from its captives. Once its victims are dead, the creature hungrily devours their innards. Unlike other devourers, these ones are incapable of holding or trapping a creature’s soul, which is somewhat of a comfort when considering the eventual fate of the creatures they devour. In the moment, it is no more pleasant at all for the victim.
Soulspike Devourer Huge 10th level spoiler [undead] Initiative: +12 Vulnerability: holy Massive claws +15 vs. AC (2 attacks) - 80 damage, and if this attack reduces the target to 0 hp or fewer, the target disappears and becomes a soulspiked spirit (see soulspiked spirit) Critical hit: The target starts making last gasp saves. On the fourth failure, the target is reduced to 0 hp, disappears and becomes a soulspiked spirit (see soulspiked spirit). C: Soul shatter +14 vs. PD (1d3+1 nearby enemies) - 90 negative energy damage Critical hit: The target is stunned until the end of the soulspike devourer’s next turn. Limited use: 1/battle, but the ability recharges each time the soulspike devourer uses devour spirit. Devour spirit: As a standard action when the escalation die is 3+, the soulspike devourer instantly kills its oldest soulspiked spirit and regains 100 hp. The spirit’s body appears engaged with the devourer Soulspiked spirit: The soulspike devourer begins the fight with one soulspiked spirit and can impale up to four soulspiked spirits. A soulspiked spirit can take no actions, takes no damage, and doesn’t have to make death saves. All impaled souls escape when the devourer is destroyed. When a creature’s spirit escapes, its body appears engaged with the devourer, in the same state it was in when it disappeared. Soulspiked ward: The soulspike devourer and all nearby allies gain a bonus to all defenses equal to half the number of soulspiked spirits impaled on the devourer (round down). Negative energy resistance 18+: When a negative energy attack targets the spirit devourer, the attacker must roll a natural 16+ on the attack roll or it only deals half damage. AC 26 PD 22 MD 22 HP 625
The soulspike devourer is by far the most deadly kind of devourer, standing over 20 feet tall with four massive spikes jutting out of its torso. When the devourer gravely injures a creature, the victim’s body vanishes, and its apparition appears impaled on one of these spikes. It feeds on these trapped souls, which howl in agony and disappear in a flash when finally consumed.
Soulspike as a word just looks wrong to me.
If you like this post, consider following my Patreon to get access to content like this a week ahead of everybody else, plus updates on other projects I’m working on!   I just released a short 13th Age adventure, Rampage of the Map Backed Spider, available to backers of any level.

Mohrg Medium undead, chaotic evil Armor Class 16 (natural armor) Hit Points 91 (14d8 + 28) Speed 30 ft. Str 21, Dex 19, Con 14, Int 11, Wis 10, Cha 10 Damage Immunities poison Condition Immunities exhaustion, frightened, poisoned Senses darkvision 60 ft. passive Perception 10 Languages one language it spoke in life Challenge 6 (2300 XP) Create Spawn. A humanoid slain by a mohrg rises 24 hours later as a zombie under the mohrg's control, unless the humanoid is restored to life or its body is destroyed. The mohrg can have no more than twelve zombies under its control at one time. Actions Multiattack. The mohrg makes three attacks: two with its slam and one with its tongue. Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) bludgeoning damage and 9 (2d8) necrotic damage. Tongue. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (1d4+5) piercing damage and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 5 rounds. The target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns. On a successful save, the effect ends.
Mohrgs are formed from the most malevolent killers whose murderous rage sustains them beyond death. Their skeleton barely contains a mass of writhing viscera that ends in a long pink tongue, which the mohrg uses to paralyze victims before bludgeoning them to death. Mohrgs can often be found lording over hordes of less-powerful undead, or as lieutenants to a more powerful creature such as a lich or boneclaw.
Originally from the D&D 3.5 Monster Manual.  If there is a monster from 3.5 or Pathfinder that you want to see converted to 5e, feel free to send me a message or submit a monster request on the submit page.

Obsidian Apocalypse: Lords of Evil (5E)
Tumblr media
Publisher: LPJ Design
A dark star fell from the sky bringing with it the end of all things! The sanctity of the world known as Abaddon was shattered when a global apocalyptic event of a meteor impacting the planet causing a destructive ecological and eldritch change. Now there is no day or night, just never ending Apocalypse. An undead world ruled by fear and horror. Undead nightmares prowl the darkest forest with malevolent ghouls, grim demonic fiends and horrific vampires prey on a fearful populace. The world is dominated by the monstrously powerful immortal evils that reigns supreme over this world. And with all this the mysterious force known as Nightwall. Evil dominates the world to be challenged by noble heroes fighting to take back a world that should belong to them. Are you willing to take up the fight?
Inside this sourcebook you will find the four most powerful entities in the Obsidian Apocalypse setting::
Asi Magnor: Sheathed in fragrant wrappings and armored by magic and sheer age, the undead emperor Asi Magnor conquered the world both before his death and after. He radiates malevolence and power, desiring to clutch the world in his claw-like hands or to crush it beneath his sandaled feet.
Calix Sabinus: Wings spread, maw agape, sheathed in leather and gold, and spun from the blood of thousands stands Calix Sabinus, god-emperor of the undead lords, bringer of death, destroyer of angels, a power before the Cataclysm, a tyrant after.
Reikenjo, The First: This monstrosity of flesh has myriad dripping tentacles that seem to writhe of their own accord. At the heart of this mess of viscera is the vague form of a man, his eyes gleaming with hatred and dark cunning.
The Angel Zebadiah: Half beautiful, half monstrous, the angel Zebadiah bears the scars of his losses and defeats down one side of his body, which is stripped back to burnt and blackened musculature, like a diagram in some wizard’s book on the anatomy of the dead. Zebadiah’s eyes gleam with the feral anger of a caged animal, as though he paces back and forth in his mind, confined to a hellish reality even as he is accustomed to soaring between the planes. While Zebadiah is a hero, the closest many will ever get to the gods again, he scares you…

Alessia Promo PDF - Zhang Wei, Human Peacekeeper and Paladin of the Celestial Emperor
Publisher: Storm Bunny Studios
The World of Alessia is a high-fantasy campaign setting that combines Wuxia, science fiction, and magic-driven technology. It is a massive world where magic and technology coexist peacefully, impacting every aspect of life, from the Healing Houses of Sillias to the Great Towers of Xin. It is a land where Fyrean Genies meet with Asrian Wardens and The Gangs of Khatu push their Drifters across the desert sands, seeking resources and victims of every kind.
Alessia is a world where the gods, in an act of unification, merged into a singular pantheon – forming The Path of Light. It is a land where medical advancements, evolution, and ki energy form not only a methodology to achieve progress, but instead form a way of life. For the people of Alessia, the path to success is girded with honor, hard work, bravery, and a need to do good.
Alessia is a land at the height of its glory, held aloft by the Four Pillars of Light – Mercy, Truth, Hope, and Courage. It’s churches largely unified and its clergy working in unison, the people of Alessia enjoy what others think is only an illusion –  a slowly blossoming utopia. But Alessia is not without its challenges. Having suffered an ecological disaster that would have ended smaller planets, it’s taken the people of Alessia nearly a thousand years to pull themselves up from the viscera of the War of the Sovereigns; from the decaying Galgaræ to the Shadows of Venn, the once-vanquished forces of darkness creep again, slowly pushing against the Ring of Heaven, hoping to find purchase in Alessia once more.
Today, the Empire of Xian and its Imperial Peacekeepers stand the watch, fulfilling their ancient compact with the citizens of Alessia. Working in unison with most of the Path of Light, these two forces have set out to keep Alessia safe, sound, and a bastion of hope for another millennium –  no matter what.
This free, 7-page PDF showcases Zhange Wei, Paladin of the Celestial Emperor; the first of many new 5e iconics for The World of Alessia, this PDF also includes:
An Intro to Stunts, Flaws, and Resolve - optional 5e mechanics we're using for The World of Alessia.
Info on The Peacekeepers, the imperial troops who keep the Empire of Xian and the rest of The World of Alessia safe.
New weapons, including the ImperialSRx17 and the Imperial War Blade.
The Cadet - An all-new background for Peacekeeper characters.
And 5 pages of breath-taking art sure to inspire.
