My Writing Space

    I recently came across an article describing the perfect writing space. In summary: “Sit in a giant fluffy bean bag with pen in hand.” Lying in a cozy spot only makes me want to fall asleep, so I thought it would be fun to describe my writing space and schedule.

    Writing is a right-brain (creative) activity. These mental tools focus on social situations, nuance, and bringing imagination to words. I have learned the hard way that forcing myself to write only leads to disaster. Yet, I have seen people writing in Starbucks. So, there is room for alternative approaches.

    At the beginning of my writing adventure, I had a plan regarding my writing place. It begins with a plain particle board desk from Ikea. It is clean and faces a window with closed blinds. On my desk are a few pens, Post-its, and only one trinket, a silly air quality detector. Yes, I am a geek. On the left side is a paper scanner, and on the right is my computer. In front are three identical monitors. The left is positioned portrait, center landscape, and right portrait. I write on the left, do automated (Grammarly) editing on the center, and copy/paste on the right. When I purchased the monitors, they had the highest contrast, which would reduce eye strain.

    My computer is eight years old, but it was a powerhouse when I purchased it. Today, it still runs the latest operating system with the latest updates. When it becomes too bogged down, unreliable, or will not run the latest OS, I will upgrade. From a writing perspective, the keyboard is the most crucial part of my computer. It is a Unicomp that uses the same buckling-spring technology that IBM invented for their keyboards in the early 70s. Each key makes a loud ping/click noise when I type, which provides audio feedback. As a result, I type fewer errors. My mouse is a Logitech Trackman Marble, and they stopped producing them in the 2000s, so I must purchase them on eBay. This pointing device reduces hand strain and provides good finger feedback. I have mapped the center button to paste.

    I only installed the essential programs and kept them updated. This includes Word, Excel, Visio, Corel Draw, Outlook, Firefox (my primary browser), Edge (for one website that will not work on Firefox), Rocketcake (my website developer program), and Acrobat Professional. I do not install free programs or shareware because I do not want to risk stability or data loss. When I need to run something nonstandard, I use an old computer. Overall, I would describe my computer as 100% utility. My computer is not a gamer, workstation, or business desktop.

    Since I began writing, I have had three office chairs. The first one was free from a company going out of business. It was comfortable, but it fell apart after two years. I paid $$$ for the second one, and while comfortable, it only lasted for a year and left hundreds of black fake leather bits everywhere. I am still finding them four years later. True Innovations made my present office chair; I purchased it at Costco. It has grey vinyl and adjusts well to my posture. I find it solid, and it does not squeak. I anticipate it will last a few years, but there was a mistake. I should have purchased three.

    To me, writing is all business, but where is the joy? The joy comes from creating the words; the space supports this activity, so my space does not have clutter or frills. But where is the inspiration? When I turn to my right, I have a bookshelf loaded with personal memories, including family pictures and random stuff. This junk includes old test equipment, a professional video camera, ceramics made by my father, and a few record albums. I sometimes turn to this shelf for a distraction when I get stuck.

    Writing is my third priority, the first being my family and the second being my full-time job. Still, I treat writing as a profession and try to reserve at least three hours per day on weekdays and two on weekends. My best writing is in the morning and early afternoon, but my job makes this problematic, so I write late.

    The biggest disrupter of my creativity is YouTube. Yet, it is the perfect distraction to free my mind when I get stuck—a strange double-edged sword. What I need to do is set a distraction time limit. Yeah, I will work on that.

    What do I watch? Politics, tractor repair (I have no idea why this fascinates me. My yard is 5x10 feet, and I will never own a tractor.), old computers, China, Ukraine, machining, and electronics. I do not watch videos about writing, entertainment, or other creative outlets.

    That is how my bonkers mind creates what you have been reading. What advice do I have for other writers? Writing is like any other activity. To be good at it, one must take a high-level view with a goal in mind. This means asking questions, recording data, doing experiments, changing bad behavior, listening, researching, trying new things, and being dedicated. It has taken a long time to figure out what works for me, and it should be no surprise that other writers have come to different conclusions. A good example is George R. R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones, who uses a DOS computer with WordStar 4.0. Yikes! Yet, he created an outstanding work.

Emerging scientific evidence indicates that frequent digital technology use has a significant impact—both negative and positive—on brain function and behavior. Potential harmful effects of extensive screen time and technology use include heightened attention-deficit symptoms, impaired emotional and social intelligence, technology addiction, social isolation, impaired brain development, and disrupted sleep. However, various apps, videogames, and other online tools may benefit brain health. Functional imaging scans show that internet-naive older adults who learn to search online show significant increases in brain neural activity during simulated internet searches. Certain computer programs and videogames may improve memory, multitasking skills, fluid intelligence, and other cognitive abilities. Some apps and digital tools offer mental health interventions providing self-management, monitoring, skills training, and other interventions that may improve mood and behavior. Additional research on the positive and negative brain health effects of technology is needed to elucidate mechanisms and underlying causal relationships.

Internet-savvy versus internet-naive adults
 Functional neuroimaging allows scientists to observe regional neural activity during various mental tasks. Our group was the first to explore neural activity using functional MRI while research volunteers performed simulated internet searching.3 Previous studies suggested that mentally challenging tasks, such as searching online, may benefit brain health and even delay cognitive decline.35,36 We focused on internet searching because it is so common among people of all ages.37 


We assessed patterns of brain neural activation in 24 cognitively normal middle-aged and older adults (ages 55 to 76 years): 12 of them had minimal internet search experience (net-naive group), and 12 had extensive experience (net-savvy group). In addition to the internet-search task, we used a control task of reading text on a computer screen formatted to simulate a printed book layout.


We found that text reading activated brain regions controlling language, reading, memory, and visual abilities (left inferior frontal, temporal, posterior cingulate, parietal, and occipital regions), and the magnitude and extent of activation were similar in the net-naive and net-savvy groups. During internet searching, net-naive subjects displayed activation patterns similar to those observed while reading text. However, net-savvy subjects demonstrated significant activity in neural signal intensity in additional regions controlling decision-making, complex reasoning, and vision (frontal pole, anterior temporal region, anterior and posterior cingulate, and hippocampus). During the internet-search task, the net-savvy group displayed a more than twofold increase in the extent of activation in the major regional clusters compared with the net-naive group (21 782 versus 8646 total activated voxels).


These findings suggest that searching online may be a form of brain neural exercise. Other research indicates that after several months, daily computer-game playing leads to reduced cortical neural activity.38 Our other research indicates that memory training, along with healthy lifestyle behaviors (eg, physical exercise, healthy diet), leads to reduced dorsal prefrontal cortical metabolism after 2 weeks.36 Such findings suggest that task repetition over time leads to lower neural activity during the task, which could reflect greater cognitive efficiency after mental training.


One model that could explain such findings is that novel and stimulating mental experiences, such as searching on the internet, initially lead to minimal activation before the internet user discovers strategies for solving the unfamiliar mental challenge. After such insights, a broader neural network is engaged. After repeated sessions, the initially novel mental task becomes routine and repetitive, no longer posing a mental challenge. The lower activity observed may thus reflect a more efficient neural response. These results also suggest that previous internet-search experience may alter the brain’s responsiveness in neural circuits controlling decision-making and complex reasoning. The net-savvy volunteers showed increased activation during the internet-search task, which suggests that internet searching may remain a novel and mentally stimulating process even after continued practice.

The new enhancements in Office 2019 are a subset of a long list of features that have been added to Office 365 ProPlus over the last three years. Study Strategies that have helped me

1) Cover up what isn't important!

Use another piece of blank or solidly coloured paper to cover up other figures, questions, or information that doesn't matter. This makes it easier to remember what's important and to know where to look for information (especially useful in science or math). You can also use a ruler to cover up information if that's what you have available. A group of pencils, your pencil case, even your hand will work.

2) Give yourself A LOT of space to write.

While you may not be able to do this on a test, in your practice book don't leave yourself a tiny amount of space. This creates clutter and makes it difficult to remember what you're writing and where it needs to go because you're 1) planning spatially at the same time as writing 2) creating overwhelming visual clutter as you are answering a question. The same applies for computer programs! Too much info in excel? Create a new spreadsheet with only the pertinent info. Too much text on a page? Space it out, enlarge the font, make it look crisp and easy to read. Remember, if you're struggling with memory and you have a lot that you're looking at, the key may be to just simplify the clutter.

3) Having trouble remembering what the info on the other side of the page said?

Ask for another test paper. I'm serious. It works wonders. This way, you can see the information you need and answer at the same time. Especially if your teacher is chill, they shouldn't have a problem with this. Another strategy, if you're allowed, is to take the staple out of your test paper so you can view everything side by side. Even if you don't have accommodations for this, your teacher/professor may be very understanding if you explain that your working memory isn't the best and you forget when you flip the page. Once again, this also works for computer programs. Open up two programs side by side instead of opening and closing them. Copy and paste is your friend!

4) Ask a friend to be your memory buddy (you don't need to use the words 'memory buddy', don't worry).

This is much more advisable for older children/teens/young adults, since younger children may get mad at the child who is struggling. If there's a piece of info, or a chain of info that you need to remember, ask them to help you recall it. This info can include anything -- instructions, a sequence of events etc. You don't even need to tell them you're struggling -- just ask someone working with you to read back the instructions, tell you what to do next, or walk you through step by step. If you find that you are struggling transferring data, or information in general, from one place to another, get a friend to check that you've done it right. Another set of eyes are always good, and you will just look like you're being careful (you don't need to tell anyone that you feel ready to punch a wall!).

5) Having trouble remembering auditory instructions but there's no one else around?

Write it down. Even if no one else around you is needing to, there is absolutely no shame in writing it down.

6) Having trouble graphing by hand?

Believe me, Satan himself put that in the curriculum. My advice? Use a ruler. Or two rulers. Line up your ruler with either the x or the y axis and use your finger (or another ruler) to line up the coordinates. Having trouble remembering which is the x and which is the y coordinate? Label them, x and y. Right above where the coordinate is written. I know you know that the first number is the x, you know that you know that, but by the time you look over to the graph paper, poof, that number is gone. Annoying. So say it. Say the number. That's right, out loud. Albeit, quietly. Especially during a test.

7) A last ditch effort for graphing and other math figures you have to manipulate is to print the figure on coloured paper. Also, use math manipulatives!

This was suggested to me and done for me, but I was never sure if it worked. Legend is that it does something, though. Yellow paper apparently. For drawing 3d shapes (ex. in chemistry) use manipulatives. Practice with manipulatives. There's no shame in it. If you can't turn 3d shapes in your head, hold it in your head long enough etc., but you can build it with the chemistry kit? Go for it. Then draw what you've built.

All of these strategies have helped me, and I hope they can help you! I know working memory and visio spatial clutter are problems that many with learning disabilities face, so hopefully these can help a wide variety of people.
