Keeping up with the theme of the past Madrigals, who loves their gift and who hates their gift? And why?
Miranda: Loves her gift. She can fly, duh. She did develop a small fear of open spaces, but like...worth it.
Amelia: She...starts out loving her gift. She makes people happy, or excited, or surprised. That's a good thing, right?....Right?
Sofía: She hates her gift. No one wants to hang out with someone who can make them sad, or anxious, or angry.
Princesa: She likes her gift alright, but she's somewhat bitter over the fact that she's 90% sure that people only like her BECAUSE of her gift.
Fuega: She hates her gift. She can't express her emotions without bursting to flames.
Mariana: She fucking LOVES her gift. She's always been adventurous, and her gift just made it better tenfold.
Leta: Also fucking loves her gift. Except on those dark nights when she wonders what pain truly feels like and...tries to find out.
Andrés: Actually does love his gift. He's shy, he likes being invisible.
Carlos: Likes his gift alright. He does wish it was more visually interesting sometimes, but, you know. He makes it work.
Avila: Not a fan of her gift, mainly because she can't really use it a lot. When she does use it, she likes it.
Amada: Does love her gift, but she's eleven, so she thinks it's kinda boring at times.
Tomás: He loves his gift a lot. Nothing much more to say
Rómulo: He also loves his gift a lot. Nothing much more to say, either!
Zoe: She loves her gift! She has so many friends now! She has no idea why so many people dislike her gift :(
Hugo: He likes his gift. He likes bugs. (Sorry, Hannah lol)
José: He loves his gift lol. Like...it's luck. Best superpower ever.
Héctor: Loves his gift. He uses it to fly!
Óscar: Suprisingly, he does like his gift. He likes being able to talk to Bisabuelo Pedro, and write down the stories of long dead folk. He just hates how the Encanto people act around him.
Beatriz: She pretends to like her gift, but actually is not a fan. Similar to Dolores's opinion on hers, in my mind.
Lidia: She likes her gift alright, but wishes it was a bit more useful.

Summer went by so fast! So, it's time for a recap:
I got several partial credits, and two full ones!
I watched Lidia Poet in Italian and I loved it so much, I need a second season yesterday, tho I don't hold many expectations. Still, the settings, the clothing, it's beautiful
I finally watched Totoro (with Japanese subtitles) and I liked it. It's so sweet and cute. And I didn't struggle as much following the dialogues and plot <3
Two bonus: I watched Chi's Sweet Home and My Dear Oni, also with original subtitles. I need to rewatch the second one, I didn't understand much of it, but it's very pretty visually
I tried working on my grammar notes, but haven't found a format that suits me yet
I started listening to Le fantôme de l'opéra and a book about how music influences our brains. I've also been watching more random stuff.
I'm half-way through a book of short stories in German, but I listened to several videos on YT, so that's something
I didn't write every week, but I wrote a bit more, and every bit counts, right?
I've been reading little, I hope I can change that soon. How was your summer, guys? Any progress you're proud of?

Redesigning the mechanics of FFIX
Final Fantasy 9 is a return to form for SquareEnix. Leaving behind all the sci-fi additions and returning to an era of SteamPunk. This is before SteamPunk was a standalone concept. So it's not so heavy handed.
Noting the flaws they had with the Materia system in FF7, and not wanting every character to be caster; equipment now has levels that allow you to learn abilities from them.
Each piece of equipment having unique abilities for characters to learn.
Each of the main characters has a concept that closely aligns with a classical class concept; Zidane is a thief, Garnet a White Mage, Steiner a Knight, Vivi a black mage, Eiko a Summoner, Freya the dragoon, Quina the Blue Mage, and Amaranth a Monk.
This gets muddy when Vivi and Steiner form Team Dark Knight, giving Steiner the ability to en-element his attacks with Vivi's black magic at the cost of his own MP, and Garnet actually being a much stronger summoner than Eiko despite being the White Mage.
I think that this "Team-up" mechanic that Steiner and Vivi showcase early on, and subsequently forgotten should have had a more central role in this game's mechanics.
This would allow combo and team attacks that are very flavorful and visually interesting. It would also make the Alexander summoning seem more interesting because despite Garnet and Eiko teaming up to summon him the first time, Garnet just Solo summons him afterwards.
Combining Amaranth and Zidane to create a long range attack (throw back to Mario RPG with Bowser/Mario) would also have been an interesting way to use Amaranth's throw skill (which is limited to tossing coins at your Witcher, and junk items you were gonna sell anyway.)
FF9 is also the game that introduces the "Trance" ability. Unlike the previous iterations by having a set time period where your characters attack power is upgraded and your main character abilities temporarily upgrade.
I say "Introduced" because it's not the first time we've seen something like this, but it's the first time it's mechanically significant. An earlier version was given to [Ryder/Rydia/Lidia?] after living with moogles for a bit.
*I'm not gonna Google her name.*
And Trance an ability that one of the main antagonists figures out how to use perpetually. With the party having to fight him while he's doing so.
OThere's also Auctions, the return of the Chocobo Forest (with hot and cold mini-game,) several sprawling kingdoms to explore, the Library of Alexandria having been spirited away by Leviathan and who makes the books all soggy, and ultimately facing off against Garland and the original 4 fiends of the original game before flying off to the red moon. (Planet 9, possibly cocoon)
I'm stopping to consider the equipment/ability linkage added in order to increase the difficulty for speed runners (and the subsequently addition of Excalibur2 specifically as a reward for to speed runners)
In retrospect it's a neat little ability used to replace the Materia system we saw in FF7, as this game seems to predate man-made materia, while still having a proto-materia included with certain items.
And these "Decorations" seem to be what gives the characters their extra abilities. Basically, still referencing the slot system, while taking it away as a core mechanic.
In hindsight it limits the user to wear equipment for a certain duration while simultaneously forcing them to grind if they wish to keep the ability.
Seeing as the latest FF games have started going away from the old paradigm of grind, and feeling more *Milestone* unless you're a try hard player, this system *probably* should be updated. But to what? I'm unsure.
Maybe it should just be a list of equipment and you can equip any of a handful at a time as long as you have the AP to do so? Then you can both limit the amount per player team AND avoid needing to grind it out.
Regardless; I just really like the *team* mechanic and wish it was expanded more.

Amelia Madrigal
Tumblr media
Inspired by @hannahhook7744's Encanto AU, and her own character headcanons.
Third image made using https://picrew.me/en/image_maker/1558575
Fourth image made using https://www.dolldivine.com/la-colombiana
Fifth image made in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Amelia’s full name is Amelia Alma Madrigal.
Her first name means “brave” and her middle name means “soul”. Her middle name is her paternal grandmother’s name.
She is the second oldest daughter of Bruno Madrigal and Alejandra Delgado.
She has dark brown hair like her father’s, but it’s straight like her mother’s. Her skin is a paler brown than Bruno’s, but darker than Alejandra’s. She has Alejandra’s eyes and facial features. She looks identical to Sofía.
She is fifteen years old.
She has an older half-sister by sixteen years named Miranda, and a twin sister, Sofía, younger by fifteen minutes.
She likes girls, and is seeing one named Rosana.
Her gift is positive emotion manipulation. She can change the positive emotions of anyone she wants, as long as she herself is feeling said emotion. This is visualized by a multicolored aura around her body, with a specific color for each emotion. This sometimes also happens involuntarily. She loves her gift, but Bruno and Alejandra have tried to enforce rules about her powers, and to not change anybody’s emotions without permission, but Amelia doesn’t understand. If someone’s sad or angry, shouldn’t she make them happy?
Her door portrays her with a smile on her face, holding her hands to her chest. Rounded waves push off of her body.
Her room has red stained glass windows for walls, and a rainbow colored river-rock tile floor. She has many decorative pillows and rugs strewn around, so much so that if you collapsed anywhere, you’d probably be safe.
Her symbol is the mask of comedy.
She loves Bruno, but often feels like he doesn’t pay her enough attention, and that he favors Sofía.
Similarly, she also loves Alejandra, but wishes she wasn’t so strict with her, and wishes that she wouldn’t chase away her potential admirers with a sword.
She and Miranda love to spend time in the Encanto together, usually to watch over the children. She looks up to Miranda a lot.
Amelia is the only person not affected by Sofía’s gift, and vice versa. She doesn’t understand why Sofía is so sad and anxious all the time. Why can’t she just be happy? Then nobody else would be affected by her gift.
She mainly hangs out with Princesa and Beatriz, and occasionally Leta, Carlos, and Lidia.
She gets along best with Pepa, Camilo, and Princesa.
She loves to sing, and regularly performs for her family and the rest of the Encanto.
She's a social butterfly, and has many friends around the village.
She is ADHD and hyperactive, and always on the move; even when she’s sitting, she’ll be drumming her fingers or tapping her feet.
She loves bright and colorful things, and collects rocks, glass bottles, and colorful cloth scraps.
She likes doing herself up with makeup and hair products for events.
Her favorite colors are red, yellow, orange, and gold.

have been playing a bit with triptych frames recently and led my curiosity to think and look on ways this carries over into writing and back
along with Georges Perec's An Attempt At Exhausting A Place In Paris less recently but I'm at my desk today the other night
I came across this https://lithub.com/lidia-yuknavitch-wants-you-to-write-a-triptych/
I started this Tumblr mainly to share my digital paintings & visual imagery with a little poetry layered in plus I like to watch & enjoy but we'll see where this goes. Presumably nowhere but we'll see where it matters. There are also photographs of a leaf and building layered in with triptych framed painting, and how far do buildings go. Ann Quinn was also pretty brilliant and with thoughts on that some more it's time to hold for now.

Video Transcription
Howdy, Moz fans, and welcome to a new edition of Whiteboard Fridays. Have you ever felt like TikTok is reading your mind? It's just an algorithm. My name is Lidia Infante. I'm the Senior SEO Manager at Sanity, and I'm going to talk to you about how TikTok offers you the videos that you like.
What do you like?
The very first thing they're trying to do is to show you videos that interest you. They're trying to keep you in the app as long as possible. So they need to figure out what you like. How are they going to do it? The moment that you sign up, you provide some demographics data. Your age, your gender, where you're signing up from all gives TikTok enough information to start assuming what your interests are going to be and populate your For You page.
Out of that first For You page, the topics that you engage with or don't engage with are going to give TikTok the information about what you might enjoy seeing on your For You page. After that, they're going to try to find related topics to the ones that you have expressed an interest in. For example, I really like cross-stitching. It's not difficult to assume that I also like interior design or flower arrangements, which I do. TikTok shows them to me, and I stay on the app much longer than I should. Another point of information is your followed profiles and the topics that they talk about or that they are interested about. Your Discover tab behavior is a very strong signal for TikTok too. What that means is when you search for a hashtag, click on a hashtag, make a TikTok search, search for a user or a trend or a TikTok sound, that's all giving strong information to TikTok about what you like because making a search or diving deeper into the content of a sound is much more complicated behavior than simply just scrolling past on your For You page.
What is the video about?
Now that they know what you like, they know that they can serve you videos about it. But first they need to understand what the videos that they have in the database of content are about. To do that, they're going to use the visuals. So literally TikTok can "see" with the visual AI the content of your video. What are the objects that are in there? Are there faces? What are the emotions of the faces? Is there a dog? Is there a chair? They're going to be able to see and process all of that. Another strong signal is going to be the text overlay that you put on your TikTok video, if you have any notes or any content put on there or if you're manually inputting the captions. The audio on your video is very relevant for TikTok to understand what the video is about, and by audio I don't mean TikTok sounds. We're going to come back to that. I mean the actual voice, the words that you're saying or the ambient noise that sets the location of your video. The captions and hashtags that you use in the video are very relevant and help TikTok understand what it's about as well. When you are done with creating your video and you start typing it out, when you create the cover for your video using the TikTok tools, that gives TikTok that level of information. Then we've got the TikTok sound. If you're using a TikTok sound that's related to a trend or to a topic, it also gives TikTok the information about what your content is, what the emotional tone of your content is, and so forth. All of these elements, as a hardcore SEO, are what we would treat as on-page SEO but on the TikTok side of things.
Is the video any good?
Now they know what you like, they know what their database of videos are about, but they also know that they have a limited amount of time for your attention. So they're going to want to show you only the best of the best of their content. They're going to have to understand if the videos they've got are any good. How are they going to do that? They're going to be using, amongst other metrics, engagement. So the engagement of users that have expressed similar interest to yours are going to help TikTok predict your potential engagement and how much you're going to like the video. They're also going be favoring native content creation. So any video that's being created directly from TikTok using the TikTok tools is going to get a little bit of a boost. The language that the content is in is very relevant too. When signing up for TikTok and creating your profile, you state what are the languages that you speak and what is your preferred language. TikTok can also understand this based on your behavior. Then the device that you're using and the strength of your connection also help TikTok serve you lighter videos and shorter videos when you're maybe on a train or don't have as good connection to actually have a good viewing session.
What isn't eligible "For You" page content?
There is some stuff that TikTok does not want to see on their For You page. Any content created by a user that has stated that their date of birth is under 16 is not going to be eligible for the For You page. So if you're trying to be cute and giving your brand account a date of birth of when it was founded, don't because nobody is going to see it. They're also quite strict with QR codes. They don't want to see any QR codes in there because of safety reasons. You don't know if that QR code is going to take your users to a spam website or a dangerous website showing porn or violent content. But also they don't want to miss out on the affiliate marketing payout that they get when you shop directly on the TikTok Shop. Any dangerous or violent behavior is also not accepted or eligible for the For You page. So unless it's tagged as done by specialists, don't try this at home and so forth, it's not going to show up. Engagement bait content is also not eligible for the For You page. So content that tries to trick users into engaging with it without them actually naturally wanting to engage with it is going to be demoted from the page. That type of content is like when on Instagram we used to see posts that said tap twice to see some magic, and the only magic is that you had liked the post and increased the engagement of the brand. That is the type of engagement bait that's not acceptable on TikTok. Another thing that they don't accept on their For You page is any content that shows tobacco products.
Is TikTok capable of breaking bubbles
TikTok wants to show you videos that interest you and keep you in their platform, but they're also trying to not generate an echo chamber for you. Echo chambers are a very real risk of any recommendation algorithm that's based on interest and engagement, and we have seen a rise in radicalization across different populations because of this. The way that TikTok is trying to address this problem is by offering random content of random interests, random creators that you've never seen before on your For You page. Initially, they said they were doing this about 10% of the time, but there aren't any current numbers about this activity. This is not enough to remove echo chambers because of the psychological effects of familiarity and their exposure effect. Once you see something that does not quite fit right with your For You page, you're very quick to scroll. It is a similar phenomenon to banner blindness when we are going around the website. We kind of know what an ad looks like, and we don't even look in that direction. It's a similar effect. So it is not enough, but one must appreciate that they're trying. Delve more into the life and times of Lidia Poët in a new contemporary Netflix drama. Now streaming on Netflix is a new dramatic series entitled “The Law According to Lidia Poët,” starring Matilda de Angelis in the title role of Lidia. The show is loosely based on the early career of the Italian lawyer and the difficulties she faced. It also focuses on complicated legal cases in which innocent people are defamed and convicted before reaching a courtroom. The antics and detective work Lidia indulges in to save her clients are primarily romanticized for TV drama. According to Marilena Jahier Togliatti, the only living relative — a distant grand-niece of the lawyer, the Netflix show is “too fictionalized” for her liking. She thinks, “What was the need to twist history? She [Lidia] was already adventurous enough to stay true to reality.” I’ve watched all six episodes of the first season and found it entertaining and well done. It may be a sensationalized drama piece, but one of the things it does exceptionally well is shine light on Lidia Poët’s name, making it and her actual accomplishments known to a new generation. The Netflix production is filmed in Turin, and the sets and scenes are lovely, but the scene stealers are the actors' costumes! Costumer Stefano Ciammitti, a pupil of legendary Italian costumer Piero Tosi, has created sumptuous velvet and silk embroidered concoctions for his female and male leads. Bold crimson and teal colors, tailored suits paired with smart hats, ivory buttons, belts, delightful gold insect broaches, and earrings make for delicious visuals. I give the show two thumbs up and hope there will be a second season. Waiting for confirmation from Netflix with bated breath. #LidiaPoët #ItalyFirstFemaleLawyer #WomenInLawItaly #NetflixItalianDrama #NetflixOriginalItalySeries #BreakingBarriersWithLaw #PioneeringWomenInLaw #MatildadeAngelis #italiantvdrama https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpg7C0EswL4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
