Washerwomen / 1 (Magical Characters of France.)
Herqueuche
is a Vosges character presented as a witch or a fairy. It is said that she sometimes appears at night, between Christmas and January 1st, under a bridge where she washes her clothes.
The women say that Herqueuche came, invisible, to help the washerwomen hit the laundry in the stream, but that we must be careful not to go to wakes at these times if we do not want to be scratched in the face by her sharp nails.
Later she was described as an evil old woman. “Tall, stiff, dry, toothless, hiding her hairless head under a large straw hat and her emaciated body under filthy rags”, she came to punish those who did not respect certain rites linked to Christian festivals.
(And it is because of Herqueuche that doing laundry on All Saints' Day brings bad luck, as well as baking bread between Christmas and New Year's Day.)
