Hou kinderen niet dom! zo gaan ze geen domme dingen doen! Als je Soa's, tienerzwangerschappen, mi'sbruik en negatief zelfbeeld wil tegen gaan. Geef kinderen dan se'ksuele opvoeding! Puberteit begint bij sommige kinderen al heel vroeg, dus het is belangrijk om te weten hoe hun lichaam zal veranderen en wanneer precies, en hoe bijvoorbeeld maa'ndstonden werken. Anders heb je een heleboel kinderen die verward zijn over de veranderingen van hun lichaam. Daarnaast moeten kinderen weten waar babies vandaan komen en hoe je soa's voorkomt, en moeten tieners voorbehoedsmiddelen hebben. Dat wil niet zeggen dat je ze aanmoedigt om dingen te doen, maar tienerzwangerschappen en soa's voorkomt.

Kinderen moeten weten wat voor gedrag van volwassenen, of oudere tieners, kan en niet kan. Zo voorkom je mi'sbruik. Kinderen moeten durven zeggen wat ze niet willen, en niet oké vinden.

Ik ben als kind open opgevoed. Hoewel ik het niet helemaal begreep zeiden mijn ouders dat volwassenen kindjes maken en dat ze uit de buik van mama's komen. Later in het zesde leerjaar werd er duidelijk uitgelegd hoe alles werkt en hoe je soa's kon voorkomen. En dat er niets mis is met ma'sturberen. In het middelbaar werd deze uitleg meermaals herhaald tijdens zedenleer en biologie.

In het zesde leerjaar leerden we ook over ille'gale dr'ugs, en hoe gevaarlijk dat is en hoe je neen kan zeggen.

Zonder se'ksuele opvoeding zullen kinderen allerlei dingen leren op internet en van po'rno. Foute verwachtingen, en een heleboel vrouwenh'aat....

Met andere woorden, hou kinderen niet dom, zo gaan ze geen domme dingen doen!

Eurovision 2008 - Number 10 - Esther - "Game Over"

It's time for another Belgian girl-bop from a singer with a mononym who found fame through TV talent shows. In the case of Esther Sels it was two different TV talent shows nearly a decade apart.

Going all the way back to the late 1990s, Esther had taken part in and won the long-running Soundmixshow in which singers covered songs by famous artists and imitated them. It was the forerunner to the various Idols series. That launched Esther on a short-lived pop career that had pretty much ended by the 2000s.

Cut to 2007 and Esther tried again. This time by entering the 2007 incarnation of Idool. She didn't win this time, but she did make the final and finished as the runner-up. That success led to another try at a solo pop career, and an entry into Eurosong 2008.

Game Over was a product of the record label. The UK based song-writing team were a long-established group of session musicians and song-writers who had written top ten hits of the likes of Westlife, Sheena Easton and Natasha Bedingfield. Interestingly Alan Ross, Dave James and John McLaughlin (who'd co-written Liz McClarnon's song for the UK national final last year) had written the song in English, and a decision was taken to translate it into Dutch for Eurosong. Not the usual choice to take in 2008.

It's a bop that harkens back to the girl bop equivalents of the 1960s. It has instrumentation and a rhythm that feels drawn straight from the well of bands like the Supremes or Martha and the Vandellas, but updated significantly with some confrontational synth work and a much less saccharine and more aggressive edge. Esther's vocals are strong and she's not at all distracted by the bloke on a bicycle riding around her on the stage for no apparent reason.

The problem was that not only was Esther in five-song heat with two other girls bops, but she followed the distinctly different eventual winner and preceded another girl bop from a much more famous name. Her vocals and the good songwriting counted for nothing, leaving Esther to finish last in her heat.

Game over. Again.

Esther disappeared back into the musical shadows for another seven-year period before re-emerging in 2015 as the new member of Dutch covers-band De Grietjes - the same band that Evi Goffin was in slightly earlier.

Bringing Esther's story right up to date - she took part in another TV talent show in 2024. VTM has a new show - Sing Again - in which stars of TV talent shows of the past have another go to impress judges (and the judges this time included Hadise, Gustaph, Mentissa and Laura Tesoro!). Esther opened up the very first show, and once again Esther made the final, but missed out on going to the Ultimate Final(!).
