So do people in MHA just... not analyze or research their Quirks?

A lot of fics love having the idea of there being Quirk Analysts, which I admit would be a very interesting concept (combined with Quirk Counseling), but it just doesn't hold up in canon.

Izuku and Shigaraki are treated as "creepy" for analyzing Quirks, and Izuku in particular is almost always made fun of or treated as "off putting" for his analysis notebooks, when it's strategically SMART for them to be so analytical.

What the actual hell is this chapter ?!?!?!? What is going on horikoshi?!?!??

So suprise AFO IS BACK👎👎👎 seriously what the hell I knew he was gonna come back but he is so boring and I hate him as a villain like wdym you only pulling up with a plan that failed multiple times cos you have thing for your brother like!?!? The doctor and the hero comission could of been better villains. My point still stands AFO being the main bad guy even though this mf was killed and injured by everyone is lame and stupid 😭. Like can AFO just disappear out of existence already like?!?! Also I really doubt that dfo is true considering this guy just loves to act like a season 1 bakugo and call Izuku useless every breathing moment he gets. Shigaraki is dead?!?!!!? Vile. Izuku lost two arms and is getting the worst end of the stick as always. The quirks the backstory the things?!?!. So basically overhaul had the oh quirk or whoever the guy in the picture manga panel thingy which looks like OVERHAUL. This guy had an op quirk like he had the power of destruction and reconstruction but then afo takes that away and then has the doctor somehow somehow genetically modify it ( istg i still dont know how that works or how he could do that) and then TOOK SHIGARAKIS OG QUIRK WHICH (what was his og quirk we arent ever told) and then proceedes to set this child who wanted to be a hero for pure failure. Also what is going on with AFO and kotaros relationship and why does the description of kotaro being mentally/emotionally weak heavily remind me of inko midoriya. Eraserhead making a comeback and finally apologising (or not). I mean at least Eraserhead is back and apologising to his student for failing to be a teacher to him which ok cool cliffhanger I guess. You know, returning from my work last night made me think how Shigaraki is stupid. Not in the incel/gross way the "stans" like to show in their works(you do you, guys. No hate) but he is canonically stupid bc ...he never get his butt off the couch to do smth.

Think this way: if you rave about destruction and you have decay as a power...what else do you need?

Shig never stop to think for 5 mins on what to do. And what irks me is how Shig is smart...he can be smart...but if he really think for 5 mins it changes the plot.

"Lets kidnap/recruit Bk" if Shig thoight for 5 mins...doubt this would happen.

Also Shig gets things on his lap without earning.

I’d like to apologize to Izuku, Shigaraki, Todoroki and Dabi for getting the short end of the stick narrative and character wise. They deserved better than what Hori gave them.

I want Second's plan to fail horribly because he forgot that the stolen Danger Sense would warn Shigaraki of their plot against him. Izuku goes along with the plan, only for Shigaraki to say "SIKE!" and reveal he ate the vestiges like AFO showed he could do. The remnants of the people who all called for Tomura's death and kept saying he's pure evil are gone. It's up to Izuku to finally do the saving.

If he does defeat Shigaraki, it should be with words and a debate of ideals, not with a repeat of the vestiges going wild inside of an AFO holder. How many times are they going to go back to that old well? Even if Second's plan does work, it relies on Shigaraki being so stupid that he throws away a guaranteed victory against Izuku just to flex on him by ripping out parts of his quirk. And of course, Danger Sense NOT detecting anything wrong with Deku allowing himself to get touched so many times. And Tomura not just using Decay on him the next time he grabs him. Which we already established leaves you dead unless you cut off the part of yourself affected. Why not just beat Izuku to death? Or use the multitude of special powers we know he's got and that AFO made copies of to beat him? Shigaraki has a body that heals infinitely and he, by his own admission, can only be taken out by a really huge attack. Such as the kind that Gearshift produces. Which Izuku exhausts himself using. Izuku does not having infinite stamina or any sort of healing factor. How long can he really keep fighting, especially when he's exhausted himself multiple times in this fight? Izuku could easily be only 5 minutes away from dying, at best! But Tomura, again snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.

This feels more of a fight between quirks and NOT what it should actually be!

A fight between two people with similar upbringings but different outcomes. Izuku picked up by All Might and raised to become a hero, while Shigaraki got picked up by All For One and was raised to become a villain. They suffered as kids but has risen up from the ashes and are now dueling to see who comes out on top.

Izuku and Shigaraki are not being treated as people in this, they are only vessels for powers to go at it at each other like a bunch of little kids playing pretend and trying to one up each other.

Like in canon Shig also got the shortest end of the stick too. So if he formed a friendship with Izu...that could change many things.

They could have been a perfect team or perfect rivals. They would constantly battling to pull the other to their side which they view as right.

But Hori doesn't seem to care for them so this potential is squashed more and more as the story goes on.

What actually happened in Izu vs Shig till now other than Shig licking Izu's tentacles? This is meant to be the MC vs One of the main Antagonists!

Yet we saw Bakugou vs Shig and now Bkg vs AFO with Bkg saving All Might! - and not Izu! What the hell is this?

Now that I've said my piece about AFO, I thought it would only make sense for me to talk about Shigaraki, as I also don't think I've stated my opinion on him/his characterization & writing.

I really like his backstory and I think he absolutely got dealt a horrible hand: an abusive father + a family that just let it happen and wouldn't stand up for him + a traumatic Quirk awakening + people refusing to help him while living on the streets + years of grooming and manipulation by All For One. All of that is just a recipe for disaster, and I like all of that.

I like how hands on he is as a villain, too. I like how he planned both the USJ and Forest Camp attacks. I like how he's been a heavy hitter in both wars. I like how he's turned his back on redemption and reformation. I can even respect how he came to care for his subordinates and rejects AFO's attempts to possess him and take control of everything.

However, that's all I like about him. Everything else I'm about to say honestly comes down to pure speculation and musings I've had about him. This is also going to be a bit critical of Izuku as well, but not terribly so.

First, Shigaraki's motives make absolutely no sense to me. I know he wants to "destroy everything" or whatever, but why? Does he want to destroy the current system that made it to where the only person who offered him any help when he desperately needed it was Japan's #1 villain? Does he want to destroy everything for the sake of destroying everything? Which is it? And what does he expect to happen once he "destroys everything"? He says he hates Stain because people are listening to him rather than to Shigaraki, but Stain is actually bringing up valid points. As far as we know and up to that point, Shigaraki hasn't. How can he expect people to listen to him if he's just attacking people for the sake of attacking them?

For that matter, he has little to no meaningful connection to Izuku, and the two are supposed to be the main hero and villain. Sure, they have their conversation in the mall, but that's it. They have their fights during the war, but that's it. There's no interaction between the two outside of those instances (why in the name of fuck was Izuku not the one kidnapped? This also would have been such a great time for more interaction), and to me, that makes Izuku's whole "I want to save Shigaraki," thing come off as kind of ridiculous and hollow. Add on the fact that Shigaraki explicitly doesn't want to be saved, and it just makes Izuku look painfully naive.

Furthermore, their conversation in the mall to me is just stupid. It starts off really good when Izuku explains that Stain genuinely believes he's making the world a better place with his actions, and while he doesn't condone what he does, he understands why he does it. That's actually incredibly introspective of Izuku, who then also goes on to say that he doesn't understand what Shigaraki's trying to accomplish, as it seems like he's just destroying things for the sake of destroying them. This could have been a great moment where they delve more into the corruption of heroic society, how society has put people like them at a disadvantage, but no.

Instead, the conversation segways to All Might of all people?

Izuku goes on to say that he can understand Stain... because they both were inspired by All Might. Izuku, I love you to death, but what the fuck was that? I know that you have a pretty black and white view on heroes vs villains, but that was SUCH a swing and a miss.

Then Shigaraki just... takes all of this at face value? He doesn't say he hates All Might because he views him and people like him as the ones upholding the society that put him at such a disadvantage. Instead, he says he hates All Might and everyone else because they live happily and grin happily.

In my opinion, I don't think Horikoshi knows what direction he wants to go with Shigaraki,and it seems he wants to have his cake and eat it too. On the one hand, he wants him to be this tortured soul that Izuku needs to save and redeem, but on the other hand,he also wants him to be this omnicidal villain who rejects redemption when it's presented to him. He gives Shigaraki and Izuku next to no interaction with each other but tries presenting them as having this weirdly deep connection. Which one is it?

MHA chapter 416 (rambles)

Ok so this was like mainly a conclusion chapter for many characters and I guess I like that we are getting clarity on what's going on with some of the characters.

This chapter definitely gives me some very mixed feelings I feel like it's one of the best chapters horikoshi has produced in a long time if we exclude whatever is going on with Izuku and shigaraki.

There are still some things I definitely do dislike in this chapter which are:

The overall dismissal of izuku in general by other characters. Like no offense but I feel like we should of seen more people being worried for izuku instead of dismissing their worry and being like oh Iam not putting my faith in him or something because what do you mean you're not worrying for a 16 year old who has to fight an insane psychopath killer?!?? I still hate how momo dismissed this like wasn't 1A's whole objective when it came to getting Izuku back in the vigilante arc was because they were worried and scared for him?!?!? What happend now it makes no sense?!?!? Also i still hate momos atrocious hero costume

Ochako and Toga's character conclusions?!?! Like excuse me what's going on where is toga how is she not in the picture at all if the whole point was that she sacrificed herself for ochako and layed their dying next to her now she is nowhere to be?!?! People just accept it and are like oh well she has been defeated no need to worry but you do realise that she can probably cause damage if she wanted to right?!?? Also Ausi deserves better because what's going on with her she was so out of place and somewhat irrelevant when it came to this arc like seriously hori did her dirty. Also who is next to ochako in that plane ?!?! Am I speaking to early and that could be toga or someone else

Monoma deserved better. Oh did monoma deserve more screentime to shine and actually do more instead he got injured and knocked out offscreen which is such a shame. I really wanted to see more of him

Lady nagant's take on izuku?!?? No offense but Iam sick and tired of characters having some wild takes of izuku. One minute it's oh he sees the good in everyone and he is a saint to the next which is oh he is a puppet who follows instructions to a letter and does more than he should. I still don't like kudo and his views whenever it concerns midoriya it seriously infuriates me. However, now that kudo is gone guess it's lady nagant's turn to take some of the role because hey is she saying that his pain is a good thing and that izuku has a morally grey view of villains which I cannot lie hasn't been proven at all. Don't get me wrong I love that idea but I think like everything in MHA it just has a horrible execution and I can't bring myself to like it. Lady nagant deserves better characterisation then this

This chapter was a 50/50 when it came to the character if Eri. I absolutely adored her interaction with Kota and I find them absolutely adorable also at least ectoplasm is doing something and didn't let the girl run into the battlefield which is good enough (bare minimum). However, it still feels all icky that the heroes used her or well tried to utilise her anyway even if it's with good intentions or whatever the fact that they tried to make her heal aizawa but she lacked energy so she couldn't or whatever. Her lacking energy also feels like somewhat of a horribly introduced plot point because wasn't the whole problem she had when she came to UA was that she had a lot of her quirk built up and shouldn't the power in her horn be enough rewind aizawa into a week back in time like ?!?!! She couldn't be lacking that much energy it makes absolutely no sense to me. Also dam it's sad that Eri is out here being the only one worrying for izuku. They deserve better

Hawks and tokoyami. They deserve their win section I love them and their dynamic just wish the series could of given us more when it came to them seriously the wasted potential the wasted dynamic and tensions get me

The ending of the chapter?!?! Why is izuku in his uniform what happend?!?! I still don't get how they're merging into one person or one entity with different and same memories. Also why is this all about shigaraki like they're sharing memories so why aren't we seeing Izuku's memories this feels iffy to me. The dfo truthers have risen but tbh I don't see how this can benefit izuku in anyway and why does izuku have to watch the shimura family murder. Also if izuku is in his uniform does that mean he has become part of the memory did they do some space jumbo thing where they time travel and now they're changing fate and reality or some shenanigans like that?!??? The kotaro and tenko parallel hit tho that was good but other than that this whole Izuku's Nd shigaraki fight falls flat it's really such a disappointment and disaster to me.

I LOVE THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THESE TWO IZUKU'S. I also adore his relationship with eri I wish we got more of them!!!

Let's Talk About Shigaraki

I've had some time to collect my thoughts, so I think I'm ready to finally talk about Tomura.

Fair warning, this is more of a rant. Mostly because there isn't much to say except that Horikoshi hates this motherfucker, almost as much as he hates Izuku.

Tomura is a character whose autonomy and agency has been stripped by the narrative repeatedly. And that's not really uncommon in MHA (Izuku, Hawks, Shoto, etc.), so why am I pointing it out? Because Horikoshi's assassination of his character didn't need to happen. In fact, it feels like he bent over backwards to make sure it happened.

Anyone who's been around my blog long enough knows that the MLA arc is one of my favorites, I even put it in my top five MHA arcs. It did a great job of having Shigaraki progress as not only a villain but a leader and come into his own power. My one issue with it and what kept it out of top three was that it seemed to immediately undo all the progress Tomura made by making him want AFO (the quirk). Him gaining this quirk didn't tie into his goals at all and it flipped him from wanting to use his destruction to make a world for the LOV to be free in (Eric Vale's delivery of this scene in dub was fire btw, go watch it) to him just wanting more power. It was an extremely weird decision.

The PLA War further perpetuates this and it causes some confusion as to where Horikoshi was going with his character. Instead of a newly established in-control and ambitious villain, he turned Tomura into a puppet for All For One to use for his own benefit.

(Off topic, but that also felt out of character for AFO. Prior to this, he seemed to want Tomura to succeed and carve his own path, even taking the time to gently correct his outbursts and give him actual advice and guidance. You could argue that this was manipulation on his part, but it didn't feel like it at the time. Why would he want Tomura to be level-headed and calm if the plan was to use him as a husk for his own control? It felt way more like Tomura was initially meant to be his successor, not his puppet. This reads more like another Horikoshi retcon)

For some reason, it feels like the intention was to turn him into a victim for Izuku to save. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing... Except he didn't develop Izuku enough for him to be able to do that.

Izuku doesn't understand Tomura, he even admits this himself. He sees Tomura as someone who causes destruction for the hell of it. And you know what? He wasn't wrong going off his few interactions with him. But that's where we hit our problem; Izuku has not interacted enough with Tomura.

And honestly? There's no excuse for this. They're supposed to be our protagonist and antagonist. They're supposed to be parallels with one another. So why in the world do they only really have one intimate scene together?

(I have mentioned this before, but Izuku should have been the one kidnapped, not Bakugou. Bakugou being in this position provides nothing to the plot, especially because All Might would have sacrificed his power for anyone. Bakugou isn't a dynamic or integral enough character for this to benefit the character progression of Tomura or the rest of the LOV, but Izuku is. Him learning why they're villains would have really done so much for their characters, as well as his own)

This leaves their interactions during the Final War completely stagnant and stale. Izuku doesn't understand Tomura, and Tomura knows that. He sees Izuku as a goody-two-shoes with no understanding of how dark the world can be. Except Izuku does understand because he experienced it. But how would Tomura know that? And how would Izuku know how Tomura became a villain? There's no understanding between them which is why Izuku is unable to connect with Tomura like he did Stain and Gentle Criminal. Which is why him trying to save Tomura goes nowhere.

It didn't have to be like this though. Even if it was rushed, Horikoshi could have squeezed it in. He could have made the effort. He chose not to. Partly because he can't be assed to give either of them good development, but also because he avoids the shit Izuku went through like the plague. He hates to acknowledge it and when he does it's sugarcoated (and used for Bakugou's gain, not Izuku's own). Because of he gets into the nitty gritty of it, his favorite blond rat's "development" goes right out the window.

Horikoshi wrote himself into a corner here, which is why the Izuku vs Tomura fight is so lackluster. Their interactions mean nothing, so their fight means nothing. What's his solution to this?

To fucking kill Tomura and retcon his entire backstory to force AFO back into the plot.

The last shreds of agency Tomura had as a villain were ripped away. He can't even have his own tragic backstory at this point. Hell, Kotaro can't even own his own shitty decisions, blame is pinned on Nana even though him abusing his kids was his choice and AFO somehow had a hand in him having kids?? Ok.

(Abusive man not being held accountable without someone else- a woman- taking the shit for it, what else is new in MHA)

Also, WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN AFO GAVE HIM DECAY?

In all fairness, this has been a theory for a while. But again, the entire point of his character in the MLA arc was that he took charge of his "cursed" power and made it his own. So AFO giving him Decay erases another part of his development.

(And to add to this, what exactly was the point of having him take a quirk away from Tomura? Why not make him born quirkless so a parallel can be drawn to Izuku (and even Aoyama)? What is it with Horikoshi and quirkless aversion? There are four characters born quirkless in the narrative even though they're supposed to make up 20% of the population: Izuku, Aoyama, All Might, Melissa. Only Melissa stays quirkless)

AFO just happening upon Tomura- desperate, shunned, and vulnerable- who just happens to be Nana's grandson makes him so much eviler and more despicable. Him seeing an exposed child and deciding to use him to be cruel to Nana's memory and Toshinori drives home his callousness. Making it so that he orchestrated it just takes away from that. Tbh, it just makes him look like a loser. So, both Tomura and AFO just suffered character assassination.

Back to killing Tomura, do you know how awful this comes off? This character claimed his own power and goals, only for that to be stripped by making him a puppet, the attempt to save him is drawn out and goes nowhere, and then he just fucking dies. Like he never mattered at all. Like trying to save him was a complete waste of time and there's nothing about him worth saving.

And people saying he deserved to die for his crimes, THAT ISN'T THE POINT. It isn't about what he did or didn't do. I couldn't care less about that. It's about how Horikoshi stripped him of agency again and again and then discarded him when he didn't serve the shitty narrative he created.

Tomura and Izuku deserved so much better than this

You know what? I want to share my two cents here, here it goes my controvery opinion:

His speech is dumb! People want so hard to see his words as deep and such but is so hollow for a number of reasons

1) His speech is ass bc he never bother to reach or know any hero. So him equating "all heroes hurt their families" is incorret. Look at Izu and Ochako.

2) He starts to talk about his father- mind you NO ONE KNOWS HE IS TENKO - out of nowhere. Lets not forget he hurts families too(not counting his own family) Xless sure had a family, Crusty too and many others and Shig killed without remorse "why his violence is accetable but heroes arent" throwing his damn words against his fandom.

3) What he has of his father is risks of a memory from a very traumatized man ...who even after as a ghost still tried to save his son. Which is way more than Endy did in canon.

4) understanding why a person is a villain or hero doesnt change things. "I killed Bill bc he insulted me" we understand but dont condone. Also, pretty hypocrite of him as HE NEVER TRIED TO UNDERSTAND ANYONE

5) I guess the scene was supposed to be talking about his trauma but lets be honest, as much awful Kotaro is ...AFO wins bt a longshot so why not direct the anger to AFO?

6) on that note: it is insidious of Hori to make one of traumatized characters in the story to express his anger but...in the middle of a war...one he actively killed people(look I dont think Shig had any control in that war, I dont see him as this powerful leader, and yes he did come out of the tube fresh of torture and get beat up...but he also gladly killed heroes and make no attempt to talk. At all)

7) its a really lame line, not gone lie. Shig is hot and all but thats it. Actually, that is his entire character "look hot" and nothing else. What Shig planned to accomplished? What were the goals or plans? He canonically didnt know and what a let down

8) If Hori wanted to show anger Shig making a big speech...make Shig say how UA and heroes mistreat Izu! Make Shig have some ideas...maybe a mirror (more or less) of Stain. Stain thinks AM is the best? Shig think Izu is worthy. (I can see if Shig had done that...villains stans would throw a fit)

9) his family was never an importance to him. He remember in MVA of his family bc....PLOT. and never again. His family doesnt feel it matter to the character even if Hori says otherwise.

I’d be willing to forgive AFO possessing Shigaraki if it meant something in the end.

It’s no secret that AFO has abused and groomed Shigaraki, with emotional neglect, conditioning him and literally forcing him to carry around reminders of his dead family.

So possessing Shigaraki could be symbolic of AFO taking away Tomura’s autonomy and control.

But Hori didn’t really do anything with it! It was just AFO fucking around and shit.

And I’d be willing to forgive it, if Tomura got to kill AFO in the end.

AFO ruined Tomura’s life, especially if the theory of AFO giving Tomura decay is true.

Tomura was abused and used by AFO and killing him would’ve been brilliant symbolism of him taking back control and by default, his life.

But nah, let’s have Bakugou, someone with little ties to AFO, kill him instead!

Shigaraki deserved better in the narrative. He’s a damn good antagonist and honestly very interesting with his character and personality, if only he truly got to flourish.
