Sie kommen vonUniversitäten, Musikhochschulen, Opern- und Sinfonieorchestern und teilen eineentscheidende Leidenschaft: Die Musik, genauer gesagt das gemeinsame Musikzieren imSinfonieorchester. Der Eintritt ist frei. Professionelle Leitung Sie erarbeiten eine Woche unter der Leitung des Dirigenten Kiril Stankow (1. Nach der ruhigenEinleitung mit einem sehr cantablen Horn-Solo, beginnt ein lebhafter Teil und Carl Maria vonWeber lässt den Zuhörer bzw. Zuhörerin modern ausgedrückt einen „musikalischen Trailer“ derOper erleben. Darauf folgt ein eher selten gespieltes Werk, das Konzert für Altposaune undOrchester von Georg Christoph Wagenseil. Wagenseil, ein eher unbekannter Vorreiter seiner Zeit,lebte von 1715 – 1777 und war ein Vertreter der frühen Wiener Schule. Er arbeitete als Hofmusikerin Wien und machte dort auch die Bekanntschaft mit Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, welcherWagenseil bei einem Auftritt am Hofe angeblich darum bat, ihm die Noten umzublättern. Nach demSolokonzert folgt ein pathetisches Großwerk der sinfonischen Literatur: die sechste Sinfonie vonPiotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski – auch „Pathetique“ genannt. Mit eine Besonderheit ist der langsame, anein Requiem erinnernde Schlusssatz des Werkes. Tschaikowski selbst sah die Sinfonie, das letzteWerk, dass er komponierte, als seine persönlichste und wichtigste Komposition. 65 Musikerinnen und Musiker Das Pan Symphonie Orchester (PSO) setzt sich bei der diesjährigen Arbeitsphase aus ca. 65jungen Musikerinnen und Musikern zusammen. Studierende aus vielen Fachbereichen, wieMedizin, Physik, Psychologie, Lehramt, aber auch Musik, die teilweise bereits in führendendeutschen Orchestern spielen. (Staatsoper Hamburg, Staatsoper Hannover, WDRFunkhausorchester und Nationaltheater Mannheim.) Viele haben ihre musikalische Laufbahnin den Reihen des Jugend Sinfonie Orchester Kassel begonnen. Der Solist Der Solist Julius Joachim, aufgewachsen in Waldeck am Edersee, begann mit 9 Jahren imPosaunenchor Waldeck mit dem Erlernen eines Blechblasinstruments, dem sogenannten „Kuhlo-Horn“. Nach verschiedenen Zwischenstationen entschied er sich letztlich für die Posaune. Nachdem Abitur begann er mit dem Lehramtsstudium Musik und Politik und Wirtschaft an derUniversität Kassel, wechselte aber bereits nach 5 Semestern an die Hochschule für MusikKarlsruhe in die Klasse von Prof. Schrietter und begann mit dem Posaunenstudium. Nach derZwischenprüfung erfolgte ein Wechsel an die Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar in dieKlasse von Prof. Sprenger, in der er aktuell immer noch studiert. 2019 wurde er Akademist desGürzenich Orchesters Köln. Seit Herbst 2020 ist er als Soloposaunist am NationaltheaterMannheim tätig. At this point, I think many people know that I’m writing my thesis on Vidvilt, an Arthurian romance written in Old Yiddish in the 15th century. In 1671, the first print edition of the story was produced in Amsterdam under the title אײן שין מעשה פון קיניג ארטיש הוף (“A Fine Tale of King Arthur’s Court”), and this served as a the source text for several later printings. Earlier this week, I got to look at this edition printed by Johann Christoph Wagenseil in 1699. Wagenseil was a Christian Hebraist, part of a movement of Christians who learned Hebrew for religious reasons. His is a bilingual Yiddish-German edition, created with the belief that German-speaking Christians could use Yiddish as a stepping stone toward learning Hebrew.

Interestingly, the Yiddish and German versions of the text are not perfectly synched in this printing, with the German text running several pages longer than the Yiddish, which makes me wonder how effective it really was as a tool for learning Yiddish. However, the book is also full of supplementary material, including a brief history of the Jews, a Hebrew grammar, and some background information about the history of the King Arthur legend.

On 13 October 1762 “the little child from Salzburg”—Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart—came with his father and sister Nannerl to Schönbrunn. He played the harpsichord in the presence of the Empress, the Emperor, the court composer Georg Christoph Wagenseil and various of Maria Teresa’s offspring, including Antoine who was three months older than the prodigy. The child played “marvellously,” was the verdict, and he was rewarded with an honorarium of 100 ducats and presents from other nobles. He was also presented with a fine outfit that had belonged to the Archduke Max, a coat of lilac colour and a moiré waistcoat, all trimmed with gold braid. The concert was repeated, again at Schönbrunn, a week later. Perhaps it is not true that the young Mozart flung himself at the young Marie Antoinette and declared that he would marry her when he grew up (an apocryphal story which, if it had in some amazing way come true, would certainly have altered the course of history). But his impetuosity was certainly in evidence; Antoine was present when he rushed up to the Empress and jumped on her lap, receiving a kiss in return. Mozart also responded to the Emperor’s teasing by accurately playing with one finger on a covered keyboard, and showed his own playfulness by demanding that Wagenseil should turn over his music for him, as he played the court composer’s own work. Shortly afterwards Mozart travelled on to France, where the French King’s daughter Madame Victoire became his patron, receiving a dedication of some piano sonatas in return. The Marquise de Pompadour was, however, less welcoming. “Who is this that will not kiss me?” inquired the “little Orpheus” of the haughty mistress: “The Empress kissed me.”

Baroque Gender Stories

Vivica Genaux & Lawrence Zazzo, and the Lautten Compagney of Berlin have made a whole album for baroque music with gender non-conforming themes.

In the 17th and 18th centuries it was common practice on the opera stage for women to sing in trousers. Castrati (men who were castrated in order to develop their special mezzo-soprano voices)  took on the roles of  queens or princesses. 

The album contains arias, duets and baroque opera pieces by composers like George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783), Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785), Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) and Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715-1777).

There are five different versions of Siroe on this album, an opera about a Persian crossdressing princess.

The song linked to above is about the time the Greek hero Achilles had to go into hiding, dressing up as a woman and learning to weave. Those who have seen Gentleman Jack, the TV series about the 19th century transmasculine lesbian Anne Lister, should know that she often referred to the story about Achilles in order to find out if other women loved women the in the way she did. If they understood the reference, they were in. LGBTQ people used history and art to develop a vocabulary they could use to understand themselves and each other.
