Last resort | Leslie Shay
Tumblr media
Pairing: Leslie Shay x Firefighter!Reader Reader pronouns used: she/her Summary: Chief Boden orders everyone to evacuate the building, will you follow his orders when you hear a baby crying? Masterlist | Chicago Fire masterlist | Words: 2.1K
It had been a quiet day at 51, you were playing cards with the rest of squad 3 when the alarms went off, signaling all units to move to an apartment fire. You jumped up and ran to the truck, kicking your shoes off and stepping into your boots. You pulled the pants up, the suspenders over your shoulders, and hopped in your seat. Squad was the first to pull out of the firehouse. Severide taps away on his tablet, “Okay, squad, listen up. The fire is fully evolved. We’ll be the first company on scene, let’s work quickly. When we’re on scene we have to move fast. Let’s wait on Bodens orders, y/l/n you’re with Cruz, Tony with Capp, and Mills you’re with me. Do you copy?” You all let him know that you copy him and mentally prepare for the call you’re about to have.
When you arrive at the scene you can immediately tell that it’s bad. “Alright, people, let’s go to work.” Boden says over the radio. “Truck 81,  primary search on the first floor, Squad 3 you take the second and third. Engine, I want a line on the first floor and raise the aerial in case it’s needed. Ambulance 61, set up triage. Let’s go, people.” You look to Kelly to hear which floor you have to go to. “Cruz, y/l/n, second floor. The rest with me to the third.”
Once arrived on the second floor, you and Cruz go door to door. The fire has already reached this floor too, so you have to kick in all the doors to check for people that might’ve passed out from the smoke. Cruz takes the north wall and you take the south of the massive hallway. You kick in another door and yell, “Fire department, call out.” Into the room. You hear a man call out, “Over here.” They hid in the bathroom. You help them stand up and walk them back to the stairwell. They seemed to be doing fine, so you urged them to walk down by themselves, making sure to tell them to get checked out at triage. When you walk back you see Cruz helped an elderly woman to the stairs as well. “Need a hand?” You ask. He shakes his hand, “No, keep going, I’ve got this one.” So, you do, door after door, you search the room. A lot of the apartments are empty already, people that weren’t home or that walked downstairs at the first sign of something wrong, you were glad there weren’t a lot of people because the smoke started to get thicker and the flames bigger. Cruz was already back kicking in doors as well, when you heard Boden’s voice over the radio. “Attention all units, five more minutes and then I want everybody out.” You look over at the many doors you have yet to check and speed up your pace.
It hadn’t even been five minutes yet when the next order came over the radio. “Attention all units, I’m calling it. Everybody out!” You hate leaving all these rooms unchecked, but you knew that Boden was right, the fire was strong. You followed Cruz towards the stairs when you heard a faint cry that stopped you in your tracks. When you heard it again, it sounded like a little kid. You had to make a decision, follow orders, or try to save the child. Against your better judgment you turn around and take off in the direction of the cries, leaving Cruz behind. The crying gets louder the further that you walk down the hallway, meaning that you are getting closer.
Cruz walks out the door and takes his mask off to take a deep breath. He sees the rest of 51  standing behind Boden, all looking in his direction. Boden is quick to speak up, “Cruz, where is y/l/n?” Cruz looks around thinking you were right behind him this whole time. “She was right behind me.” He says in disbelief, already putting his mask back on. “Cruz, stand down. I can’t let anyone back in.” He reaches for his radio. “Y/l/n, report. I want you out of this building, right now.” You hear his request on the radio, but ignore it as you’re kicking in the door that you hear the crying coming from. The fire has already made it through the ceiling of the living room, you crouch down making your way over to the crying. When you reach an open bedroom door you find the crying baby. He was lying in the arms of a woman laying on the floor. You quickly check for a pulse, you’re relieved when you feel a regular heartbeat, she must have passed out from all the smoke that was filling the room. “Y/l/n, report.” You hear over the radio again, worry now present in his voice. You don’t have time to respond as you hear a voice coming from underneath the bed. “Is mommy okay?” You look under and find a girl who can’t be more than three years old. Your heart sinks, how were you going to get all three of them out, with the fire getting stronger and stronger. Setting aside your worries, you pull her out from under the bed. “Mommy is okay, the smoke just made her really sleepy, that’s all.” You take the young girl by the hand and pick up the baby, to move them to the bathroom where you’d all have some more room to breathe. “I’m going to get your mommy now. I will be right back, I promise.” You sit down next to the mom, feeling her pulse once again. Still a steady heartbeat. You reach for your radio. “Chief.” You take a deep breath before speaking again. “Chief, is Leslie with you?” Chief Boden ushers Shay closer. “She’s standing next to me. What's going on?” Shay shares a worried look with him. “Leslie, baby, are you there?” You hear her respond with a shaky voice. “Yes, the line is open, you’re scaring me, what’s going on?” - “I love you so much, but I have to try. I just wanted to let you know that I love you, in case I..” She interrupts you, “Don’t say it, you come back to me okay. I love you, please come back to me.” It breaks your heart to hear her like this. “I’ll try my best, I promise.”
You grab the bedsheet and drag the mom towards the bathroom where you left the kids. Once inside you take off your mask. The little girl is crying, you take off your glove and wipe away the tears. “I know it’s scary, but I’m here to help. My name is y/n, what about you?” Between sobs she tells you that her name is Mila. “Okay, Mila, let’s get you all out of here.” You take off your oxygen tank and your coat, before you turn the water on in the bath, drowning the bedsheets. “Mila, honey, come here. I’m going to wrap this around you, okay? And then I want you to climb on my back.” The girl nods. You were trying to create some sort of carrier with the sheet that would hold both Mila and her little brother, so that your hands were free for their mom.” Once you had Mila attached to your back, you picked up the baby and wrapped him to your front. “I’m going to put my coat back over you okay, I want you to be very still and hold on to me, okay honey?” You button up the coat so that both the kids are safe from the fire. With the remaining part of the bedding you wrap up the mom’s body, making sure that she has some kind of protection from the flames before you pick her up and take one last breath of oxygen from your mask, since you had to leave it behind.
The fire had spread through more parts of the apartment, but there was no going back now. You went around as much fire as possible and jumped through the ones you couldn’t go around. To your surprise you made it to the stairs. You hold the mom close as you decent, quick but careful. The smoke was really starting to get to you, but you couldn’t stop, you made a promise to Mila and you intend on keeping it.
Outside the team was watching the building, hoping and praying that you would walk out of the door. They didn’t believe their eyes when they saw you exit the building, everyone running your way. Kelly takes the woman out of your arms and lays her down on the stretcher from one of the paramedics. You fall to your knees from coughing so much. Leslie sits down with you trying to calm down your breathing, while Cruz tries to help you up, but you push him off. Between coughs you manage to say, “The kids.” - “We can’t go back in, y/l/n. It’s too dangerous.” You shake your head and open your coat, revealing the improvised baby carrier. You shake off your coat to reveal a second child. Once your teammates take the kids from you to get checked out. Dawson is by your side with an oxygen mask, you eagerly put it over your face and take some deep breaths. “You scared me so much, please never do that again.” Leslie says hugging you tight.
Chief Boden steps your way. “You did good, y/l/n.” He says. “Get yourself checked out at the hospital, you took in a lot of smoke.” You nod in agreement. Dawson steps up to Boden, “Can Shay and I take her? I know Shay won’t want to leave her side right now.” Boden agrees to let them take you and will let dispatch know that ambulance 61 is out of order for the time being.
The doctors do some tests, they all go well and you are cleared to start duty right away. Dawson drives the ambulance back to the firehouse where your teammates gather as soon as they hear you pull up. You step out of the back with Leslie, as soon as they see you they’re all relieved to see you’re doing so well. “I’m all good, don’t worry guys.” You walk up to the Chief. “I got cleared for duty, Sir. I did have to leave some of my gear behind, though.” Boden nods, “We’ve got some spare tanks and masks, don’t worry about it. Glad to have you back.” Once Boden walks away you turn your attention back to the team, they all give you a hug or pat on the back. Luckily the rest of the day was slow, just a couple small calls, so you were able to catch your breath a bit more.
After a night of uninterrupted sleep, you join the team for breakfast. Mills cooked, and it was delicious as always. Boden ordered an inventory check on all the vehicles, so that’s where you headed next. You were crouched down checking equipment when you heard people walking outside. “Mommy, I see her!” You turn around at the familiar voice. Mila comes running up to you and jumps into your arms. “Hi Mila.” You hug her tight, seeing them here meant so much. Since another ambulance company treated them, you didn’t know how they were doing. Mila lets go after a while remembering something. “We made you cookies.” You smile at the little girl, you had only seen her scared on the scene, which made seeing her so cheerful now even more happy. She pulls you over to her mom who was talking with Leslie and Chief Boden. “Hi, I’m y/n, nice to meet you.” You say extending your hand. Instead of shaking your hand she goes in for a hug. “I’m sorry.” She says while stepping back. “Shaking your hand didn’t seem enough, you saved my life.” She looks down at her kids and adds, “Their lives. I owe you everything.” You smile at her, “No need to apologize, and of course, I was just doing my job.” The woman shakes her head, “Everyone that I have talked to has said that you went above and beyond for us. So, thank you. Thank you so much.” Hearing back from the people that you saved was so special. Knowing that you’re the reason they are able to stand right in front of you. “Do you have some time to stick around? I would love to show Mila the trucks, if she’d like.” Mila was already nodding her head enthusiastically, “Please, Mommy.”
Your girlfriend was watching you in awe as you posed for pictures with Mila on your lap behind the steering wheel of the Squad truck. While Chief Boden was proudly watching you interact with the family that you saved.

“Chief’s Daughter”
brian zvonecek x fem!reader
a/n: i got this idea from @winchesterszvonecek after reading trouble so i hope they aren’t too similar, you’re an inspiration 😘
warnings: mentions of sex, brian on blast lmfaoo, that should be it! enjoy 🤌🏻🤌🏻
me after writing this imagine ⬇️ i’m absolutely laughing my ass off rn
Tumblr media
“Anyone got any plans after shift? Cruz asks out to the rest of truck 81 sitting at the common table, “Oh and uno.” he added once he placed down a yellow draw two.
“Uh yeah, I’m meeting my girlfriend’s parents…” Otis replied while playing another draw two causing the next person to have to draw four. According to house rules anyway.
“Oh-ho-ho, meeting the in-laws. How long has this one been brewing?” Herrmann asked causing Otis to blush.
“About 4 months, we’ve been taking our time, nice and slow.” Otis lets out a soft chuckle leaving the rest up to their imagination.
“Really? You think it’s gonna last long?” Cruz asks in an irritated tone since he ended up having to draw 12 because everyone else around the table so conveniently had another draw two.
“Hope so. I really like her. Depending on how much of a hard ass her dad actually turns out to be I might even love her,” He laughs as he says it but he knows he’s already in love with you.
“Is the sex good?” Cruz asks and the whole table gives him a look. “What!? it’s a fair question and you don’t gossip to me about your love life anymore mister ‘i have a girlfriend and i need to spend time with her blah blah blah…’”
Once he finishes his rant that was for sure out of jealousy, (in a sense that Otis’ gf spends more time with him than joe does, not the fact that he doesn’t have a gf). Everyone expectantly looks at Otis.
“Well, I don’t want to brag, but it’s really good.” Is all Brian says and the guys are still giving him the same look.
“Details buddy let’s go,” Cruz says borderline actually annoyed.
“What else am I supposed to say? It’s good, it’s hot, it’s sexy. She’s the women of my dreams! She’s definitely not quiet, ‘Oh Brian, oh Brian!” He says in explicit detail mimicking your sex noises.
“What are we talking about here?” Chief Boden says as he was eavesdropping for the last 30 seconds.
“Oh, Otis is telling us about how hot the sex is with his new girlfriend!” Cruz shares a little too eagerly earning an unamused eyebrow raise from the Chief.
Otis then slapped Cruz in the chest now embarrassed of his friend.
“Well, go on, let me in on this ‘bro’ talk.” Boden says encouraging Brian to share.
“I mean I don’t want to bore you with the details sir…” Brian says embarrassed in front of his chief.
“Oh c’mon you gotta tell him about the part where she’s not quiet, and literally screams your name! You know the whole, ‘Oh Brian, Oh Brain!’” Herrmann says now mimicking Otis’ perception of you.
“Yeah he’s meeting her parents tonight! Says he might love her if her dad isn’t too crazy!” Cruz says dying laughing and still not fully grasping that this is extremely embarrassing for Otis. Meanwhile Otis sits in his self-loathe at the moment beat red wishing he never said anything at all.
“That is just…wow. What a coincidence though, I’m meeting my daughter’s boyfriend tonight. Dinner, at my place…7 o’clock.” Boden says piling on the details.
“Wow that is a coincidence…sir.” Brian coughs at the last second praying that his girlfriend is not his chief’s daughter. She would’ve mentioned something right? Like oh hey, just to let you know, your boss is my dad! She knew he was a firefighter at 51 why did she not say anything. Suddenly the room felt really hot and Brian was being cooked.
“You know, Otis, the coincidence is really just uncanny, like how my daughter’s boyfriend is a firefighter, and you’re a firefighter. And how my daughter’s boyfriend works at firehouse 51, and you work at firehouse 51, oh and also, my daughter’s boyfriend is coming over to meet us tonight, and you’re going to meet your girlfriend’s parents tonight. It’s just…wow! Absolutely…crazy.” Boden says finishing his train of thought smiling like a maniac getting an absolute kick out of this little ‘bro’ talk he decided to indulge in.
“I’ll go mop the app floor now.” Brian said getting up and excusing himself from this horrifying situation he’s found himself in.
“Make sure you wash all three trucks too. I wanna see my reflection in every single one head to toe. And don’t be late to dinner!” Boden said walking away laughing knowing he was going to call Donna and tell her everything.

I’d love it if you could write
“Well, this went horribly wrong…” And “Idiots. They are all idiots.”
With Chicago Fire pretty please ❤️

The atmosphere of Firehouse 51 was one of absolute secrecy. The majority of the house had crammed into the common room, some filling food dishes while others strung up decorations, each person adopting a very temporary and absolutely rare attitude of quiet.
"Hey, Kelly, grab that," you whispered as loud as you could. Balancing on the edge of an armchair, you had been attempting to stick a Happy Birthday banner above the doorway.
Kelly put his stack of party hats down and rushed over to help. "Where am I going?" he asked, taking the end of the banner. He pulled it over to the other side of the room, standing on the tips of his toes to stick it in the corner. "Here? Hey, Stella, pass me the tape?"
Sylvie slapped Mouch's hand as it reached for the bowl of popcorn. "Uh, no! Hands off the party food, Mouch."
"Oh, come on, there's more than enough here," Mouch sulked.
Sylvie stared. "Off."
"Guys, where am I putting these party poppers?" Violet called, slapping a hand over her mouth when a chorus of hushes came her way.
Cruz pointed towards the pile of presents on a table. "I think Y/N said over there."
Hermann cursed. "Damn, I think I forgot my present."
"No, no—" You turned momentarily away from the birthday banner, which you were still struggling to hang up the right way, to point Violet in a different direction— "By the cake."
Stella, about three party hats on her head, frowned. "Did that personalised birthday sash every arrive?"
"Mouch, I said off the food!"
"Please, Sylvie?"
"Y/N," Kelly said, "this is impossible." The birthday banner did not want to stay up, its finicky material ripping and slipping every time you and Kelly tried to stick your respective ends to the wall.
You, ever the tenacious one, set your lips in a tight, determined line and frowned as you concentrated. "Nothing's impossible Just—reach a bit more—"
Ritter's voice, riddled with nervous laughter, broke through the quietude of the common room. "Uh, guys?"
"What in God's name are you doing to my firehouse?"
Your head swung around so fast you lost your balance on the edge of the chair and fell, only saved from falling in a heap on the floor by Cruz, who caught you and steadied you.
Chief Wallace Boden stood inches in front of the open doorway, stern face surveying the common room's new features. Behind him, Capp and Tony lingered, the we fucked up looks absolutely at home on their faces. They escaped not a single glare from the occupants of the room, who stood scattered, each with their own job that they took one hundred percent seriously.
Capp leaned over Boden's shoulder. "You said twelve!" he hissed.
"We said half twelve!" Stella hissed back.
There was a general silence and very little movement that lasted approximately three seconds before Sylvie stepped forward, hands clasped in front of her and smiling as wide as she could without it looking too forced.
"Chief!" she said. "Surprise?" At the ensuing silence, she spun on her heel and glared until everyone shouted "surprise!"
The birthday banner fell on Kelly's head.
"Well," Hermann said around an awkward cough, "this went horribly wrong."
On any other day, in any other circumstance, you might have laughed about the upheaval. But this was a party you had been planning for three shifts. Each detail had been meticulously thought out, greatly desiring the man who'd been there for you since you were toddling around the firehouse to have a good birthday despite working. Now, that plan had plummeted downwards.
You sighed and your shoulders slackened in defeat. Noting this, and finally grasping what this was, Boden let himself smile and picked up a party hat from one of the tables. "On the contrary," he said, putting the hat on your head, "I think it's wonderful."
A chorus of cheers rounded the common room and Cruz struck up the music player.
"Thank you, guys," Boden said as he pulled you, finally grinning, into his side, "truly."

Stressed and out in the open
What happens when the crew doesn't know about Casey and Severide being married and Casey goes on a call.
The day started like any other day. Casey was waking up in Severide’s arms. His favorite way to wake up. There was no better place than being in his husband’s arms. But they have to get up and get ready for the 24 hour shift that is ahead of them.
“Hey, Kel, it's time to get up.”
“Five more minutes please.”
“If you sleep for any longer then you are gonna miss me in the shower.”
He perked up at that but he didn’t move yet. So Matt kissed Kelly and slowly got up out of bed and slowly started walking towards the bathroom. He heard Kelly whistle at him. So he stopped at the bathroom door and shook his ass at Kelly. Then he heard Kelly rush to get out of bed and Matt took off into the bathroom. Kelly chased him into the bathroom and had a fun start to their morning.
Once they were done in the shower they finished getting ready for work. They walked to their separate cars to drive to work since they can come in the same car. While Casey was on his way to work he thought about his and Severide's relationship. They went to the academy together. Casey was never into men growing up. But then he saw Kelly it was game over.
They had a mutual friend Andy in common at the academy. Every night after they were done with training they would go out to the bar and hang out. Well one Friday night Andy couldn’t come out and join Casey and Severide so they decide to stay at Casey’s house and drink.
Boy did they drink! They were sitting on the couch joking around when Casey stood up quickly and lost his balance and fell on top of Severide. They both just laid there laughing until their eyes met and Casey slowly leaned down and kissed Severide. The next morning when they woke up they had no idea what happened the night before.
They talked all of Saturday trying to figure out what this meant for each other. On that day they started dating. They had a lot of fighting but Andy brought them back together every time. Andy helped Kelly get ready to propose to Casey. They got married a year after that.
They kept their marriage a secret from everyone. They didn’t want it to affect their jobs. They had to tell Chief Boden about their marriage but that was all. All it looked like was two best friends who really cared for each other and no one thought different.
They got to work that day and everything was going normal until the truck got a call and was gone for hours. Severide was going crazy. He was snapping at everyone. Everyone was whispering about what could have made him so pissed.
Severide had his radio on the whole time listening to the orders given out at the fire. But at one point Casey stopped responding and no one had heard from him or seen him. Kelly was getting more and more upset by the minute. The truck was gone for five hours. Squad had no calls during that whole time. Which meant that Kelly had nothing to distract his brain. When the truck finally pulled in, Severide was the first to greet them.
“Are you fucking stupid Matt?”
“Excuse me?”
“I would love to but you are so damn stupid that you don’t fucking use your radio!”
“Because I was saving lifes!”
“For five hours! You stopped talking on the radio three hours in! Then no one had seen you! What were you thinking?”
“What were you doing listening to the radio?”
“Guys why don’t we calm down.”
“Stay out of this Herrmann! I was listening because I was concerned for my husband who was on a call for hours! Sorry for caring and loving you!”
“Wait, you guys are married? What is going on here?”
At that moment the men stopped fighting and looked around. All eyes were on them. If no one knew about them before they sure did now. That is when all the questions started. But Kelly just shook his head and went to his bunk. He just collapsed on his bed and started crying.
He was so stressed about Matt not coming home he didn’t even think about keeping their marriage a secret now everyone knows about it. He knew Casey wanted to keep their relationship quiet. But Kelly wanted everyone to know. He could have just screwed their whole relationship. Kelly laid down and fell asleep knowing that Casey was safe.
Casey was back answering everyone’s questions. They were having a hard time wrapping their heads around lady's man Severide not only being married but gay. Casey was able to slip away and find Severide in his bunk asleep. Casey slipped into Severide's room and saw him curled up into a ball sleeping. So Casey went up behind him and fell asleep with him.
When Severide woke up he felt someone behind him and knew it was Casey. He flipped over to see that Casey was starting to wake up out of his sleep. They just laid there looking at each other.
“I’m sorry for freaking out on you.”
“It’s okay. You weren't there so it freaked you out I get.”
“I’m sorry for outing us.”
“It’s okay but we might want to go to the kitchen because I answered a lot of questions but I think it’s time to just tell them.”
“Yeah, let's go.” They walked out hand and hand to the kitchen.
“Before you guy’s start asking questions. We have been married the whole time we have been working here. We have been together for ten years. We didn’t say anything because we didn’t want it affecting the crew and everyone looking at us differently. We don’t want anyone to treat us any differently. We will act like we always have at work.”
After that everyone said congratulations and went back to work. No one even batted an eye at them anymore. They kept it professional but when they hung out with everyone they were a happy couple.

Evermore pt. 5
Cassie Voight x Mouse, Cassie Voight x Jay Halstead
a/n: sorry everyone, this is kind of a filler chapter but I promise next chapter all of the goods will start to come. Patience is a virtue 💝.
warnings: swearing, decision making, crying. Shes a filler chapter idk what to tell you. Anything I missed though.

Tumblr media
Expectantly looking at the two people before him, Sergeant Voight rests his eyes on his daughter.
Trying to analyze and prepare for the choice she makes he studies her face. He studies her brown eyes, long brown hair, her beautifully square jaw and soft features. He always admired his daughter, she was a carbon copy of his late wife Camille.
Stepping back to lightly sit on the edge of his desk, Voight clasps his hands together in his lap still waiting for an answer.
Lightly chuckling out of disbelief, Cassie looks over at Jay who was still harboring the same reaction.
"Well?" Her father finally asks.
"I-I don't know." The girl says shocked.
"Sarge, don't you think it might be a little too soon, considering..." Jay interjected with his arms crossed in front of him.
"Considering everything that happened a week ago?" Voight asks assuming the rest of the other man's sentence.
"Uh, yeah." Jay says frankly.
"Well also considering we've been down a detective in the unit for a week now, and Antonio hasn't had a partner, I think now is an appropriate time to fill that spot. Look, I'm not trying to replace Willhite. That's not what's happening. Willhite was an extraordinary detective and what happened was tragic. But I would be doing a dishonor to my unit if I leave an open spot. That means we have one less person on busts, we have one less person to help solve cases, and we have one less person putting bad guys behind bars. Now, I see someone that I trust and that I have faith in to live up to Willhite's reputation and thrive in this environment. So Cassie, what do you say?" Voight looks at his daughter again who looks even more intimidated than she was the first time he offered.
A million thoughts were running through Cassie's head, and yet she still couldn’t pick one and take the job. Being a paramedic gives her a rush, its fills a hole inside her that aches to help. But so did being a police officer at one point. Yeah she fell into a routine and couldn’t commit to being a patrolman, but this is a completely different field. This is becoming a detective.
Cassie had grown up around detectives her whole life. She knew the ins and outs of how they did their job, she understood the consequences of the hours and how some cases take a larger toll than others. But she also knew the effects of being too ‘in’ on the job. How easily it is to overwhelm yourself, and completely indulge in the rush that puts the bad people away. That’s what scared her. She knew her father wasn’t around a lot when she was growing up because of this job, so a piece of her does resent it. She resents the nights they would eat dinner without him, the Sunday’s he wasn’t at church. She resented the birthday parties and minor holidays he would miss, she resented it all. One of the main reasons she hasn’t made a choice yet is because one of her biggest fears is turning into her father. But also one of her biggest goals is to do that very thing.
“I say I need a little more time.” She finally admits.
“Okay. You have two days,” Voight says standing up and walking over to his chair.
“Okay? Thats it?” She asks confused.
“That’s it. You need time, I gave you time.” He said sitting down and opening a case file.
Cassie looked at Jay again who was biting the inside of his cheek.
Looking back at her father who isn’t paying any attention to the pair now she rubbed the back of her neck.
“I- um, yeah, okay. I’ll let you know.” She said turning to walking out the door but Jay was blocking it.
Staring into space and not noticing the girl trying to leave, Jay finally moved once she cleared her throat muttering a quick ‘excuse me.’
“What was that about?” Erin asked as the pair walked out of Voight’s office catching the rest of intelligence’s attention.
Cassie walked closer to the other girl before disclosing what just happened.
“He just offered me a job.” She said emotionlessly crossing her arms and staring daggers into Lindsay’s eyes. Cassie didn’t say it loud enough for the rest of the unit to hear, but by Erin’s reaction they knew it was big.
“Are you serious!?” Erin shouted catching everyone’s attention again making Cassie’s eyes grow wide.
“Shhh,” the girl said glancing around at their audience. “C’mon.” She finally said bowing her head and walking out of the office with Erin following her.
Once they stepped outside the district to catch some fresh air, Cassie broke. Full pacing, chewing her lips, and lightly pinching her bicep with her crossed arms.
“He offered me a job!” She finally shouted looking at her just as shocked sister. The only difference is, Lindsay doesn’t show it as obviously.
“What are you going to do?” Erin asked sitting down on the bench.
Stopping in her tracks Cassie turns to do the same. Now instead of pacing, her leg is restlessly bouncing against the bench seat, slightly annoying Erin.
“I don’t know. I just got my paramedic certification and I’ve been promoted to PIC. I absolutely adore my partner, Sylvie Brett. The environment has relaxed since Matt and Dad have worked out their issues, I just, I’m at a loss right now.” She said resting her elbows on her knees.
“Okay, so what are some pros and cons of becoming a detective right now.” Erin pressed now rubbing circles against the other girls back.
“Well, I’ve already been through the academy and worked the streets, so I’d just come directly upstairs if I transfer. I get to work closer with you, Dad, and Jay. The hours seem pretty shit though,”
“And 24-48 hour shifts are any better?” Erin asked chuckling.
“You’re right.” Cassie said quietly.
“But I won’t get to wear my 5.11’s anymore.” Cassie said sadly looking over at her sister.
“What is that?”
“The EMS pants.”
“And?”
“And they made my butt look good. Sue me.”
Bursting into a fit of laughter, the girls took a few minutes to recollect their thoughts and calm down. All of the previous worries leaving Cassie’s mind, all except for one.
“What if I don’t have what it takes?” Cassie asked sitting up straight and looking dead ahead of her.
“In what way?”
“What if I won’t be able to solve the crimes or actually put people away? What if I’m just the weak link that’s going to make the whole unit drown?” She asks quieter truly unsure.
“If you didn’t have what it takes, do you really think Hank would’ve offered you the job?” Erin asked.
“Out of pity? Probably.” Cassie said knowing it wasn’t true.
“No. If you didn’t have what it took to be a good cop, Hank would not put the whole unit in jeopardy just to make you feel better in some way. Especially not out of pity.” Erin said looking over at her sister who knows better.
“How am I supposed to just quit my other job? Just walk in and say, ‘Hey here’s my two week notice, but scratch that and make it my last shift notice because instead of being a paramedic I’m gonna be a detective in a special unit! Don’t hate me, I know it’s only my third time switching my whole career field but you know, yolo!’”
“Precisely.” Erin joked earning an eye roll from Cassie.
Exactly two days later on the dot, Cassie had a plan.
Walking into 51, Cassie went straight to Chief Boden’s office.
“Sir, can I speak with you?” She asked knocking on his slightly cracked door.
“Yeah, come on in.” He said waving her in and taking his glasses off.
“So what’s this about? You’re not on shift until tomorrow.” He said as he watched her get comfortable in the seat before him.
“I-uh,” Cassie chuckled a little as she tried to fan her face so tears won’t fall. Taking a deep breath before continuing she looked her Chief in the eye and flashed a sympathetic smile. Taking the resignation slip out of her coat pocket, she layed the document on his desk.
“Cassie,” He said almost breathlessly as he stared at the pink slip before him.
“If this is about what happened a few days ago, you can take a few shifts off. You know, decompress. Cope. You don’t have-”
“It’s not about that,” Cassie interrupted.
“It’s not about that situation, or you, or anyone else here at 51. You guys are my family and I will forever cherish the experiences and connections I’ve made here.” Taking a pause Cassie glanced down at her now bleeding cuticles as she was picking at them nervously.
“As you may know, I used to be a cop at the 31st district. I completed the academy, and I was a patrolman for two years. In the middle of that, I realized that, that uniform was not for me. I realized I had another calling, and that was to be a paramedic. Thats why for the last three years I’ve worked my ass off, pardon my language, to become an EMT then a Paramedic, and now a PIC. But after what happened, they let me in the room to help question Lullo. To help get the confession from him, and I did. And it was euphoric. To be the one to help put someone behind bars that deserved it, that was my calling. That was my original intention of becoming a cop, and that’s why, when I got the job offer to become a detective, to continue my law enforcement career, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Becoming a paramedic has been the best thing in my life, and I will forever be indebted to you, and everyone else that helped that dream come true. But I know becoming a detective, and doing real work besides patrolling the streets, that’s my life’s purpose.” Cassie finally said wiping a few stray tears.
Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment, Boden didn’t know what to say.
“As much as I admire your adaptability, and your ability to find purpose in so many things in life, I’ve got to say I’m disappointed. I’m obviously sad to see you go, I truly thought you had a big future here, and being a paramedic in general. Because you’re good at it. You’ve got the guts and the leadership skills to take charge and be the person everyone else looks up too in this community, but I understand you have to follow your gut. I understand you have bigger things to accomplish in life. Cassie, you’re going to do amazing no matter where you work, no matter what you do. I will always be here for you if you need anything, but I want you to consider your decision one last time. Because once I file this paper, you will never be a paramedic again. Not unless you go through the courses and training again. Do you understand that?” He finally asks looking at the girl.
Taking a pause and truly thinking everything over again. Cassie reluctantly nods.
“I understand.” She says now earning a slow nod from the man.
“Then I wish you well. You’re going to do great things.” He finally says standing up at the same time as Cassie and giving her a brief hug.
“Cassie wait,” He calls out making her stop in her tracks, “have you told anyone?”
“No.”
“Do you want to? That way you can break the news?”
Taking a deep breath and thinking it over, Cassie knew she wouldn’t be able to go through with this if she did, so in the most selfish way possible, Cassie shook her head.
“No.” She said now walking out.
As Cassie walked out to her car she let her tears free fall and pulled out her phone.
Cassie:“I’m in.”
Dad: “I know. I’ll see you Monday.”

Toeing the Line
A/N: Probably set around season 10, when Matt’s sister (OC!reader) has finished college and is training to be a firefighter. Let’s say Kelly has another shot at teaching a FA class.

Title: Toeing the Line
Summary: After a life raised by firefighters, you’re ready to become one yourself. Fire Academy, however, is making you question the decision.
Words: 2330

“Hehey! Look who it is! The future Candidate of Firehouse 51!”
The common room erupted into cheers as you trudged in. Your exhausted eyes and sluggish walk completely juxtaposed their celebration, but you smiled despite it, raising your hands in acknowledgement as you swung your duffel bag down and onto the sofa beside Mouch.
You were quickly swept up by Hermann, who had, perhaps unsurprisingly, been the one to precede such celebration. “How was your first day at the fire academy, Candidate?” he asked delightedly as he pulled away and held you at arms’ length.
“Instructor Severide treating you good?” Cruz called from the kitchen.
You straightened and forced a larger smile, eyes subconsciously darting around the room for a moment. “It was tough,” you told them, ignoring Cruz. “But hey, so’s the job,” you said with a shrug. Hermann clapped you on the back and there was a round of agreement. “It’s great, guys. I love it.” You cleared your throat. “Can’t wait for tomorrow.”
Boden pressed a quick kiss to the side of your head as he passed through. “That’s what we love to hear,” he said before pulling Hermann into the corridor to help with some documents.
Sylvie grinned from her place at the table. “Hell yeah. We’ll make a firefighter out of you yet. Best one Chicago’s seen.”
It was a weary job, maintaining the same expression so that the men who had each helped raise you would be unable to tell it was forced, and exhaustion wasn’t the culprit. At least not entirely. Still, your smile and your willpower preserved its way throughout the next bout of congratulations and hugs, and when Matt came in from his office and wrapped you in a hug, the smile grew slightly in authenticity.
“Tired?” Matt asked.
“As hell.”
He chuckled and pulled back. “Means you’re doing something right. We’ll order takeout soon to celebrate. Sound good?”
Your breath involuntarily hitched when you caught Kelly walking in. In a valiant attempt not to appear as though his presence bothered you—which, as awful and unfamiliar as it was to admit, it did—you quickly averted your gaze and smiled hurriedly at your brother. “Sounds great,” you said, perhaps a little too chipper. Matt’s forehead creased in silent response. “Though I might sleep a bit first.”
“Oh, sleep away. You’ll need it,” Matt said just as Kelly came to stand beside you, his hands dug deep in his pockets. He glanced between you both but ensured his eyes did not linger on you too long.
“Hey,” he said.
“Hey, Kelly,” Matt said. “Good first day?”
“Great first day.” He looked at you. “Candidate, got a moment?”
You swallowed the slowly building knot in your throat and nodded silently. Kelly said nothing more, simply turning back towards the door he’d just come through, and you took a gulp of air, muttering something inaudible under your breath. It was obvious Matt knew something was wrong between you, the two of you acting far too suspiciously for people who were normally the best of friends, but he also knew that you were entirely capable of sorting out your differences, or whatever this happened to be, alone. So, with a reassuring squeeze to your arm, he offered a tight-lipped smile and walked backwards towards the table.
“Proud of you, sweetheart,” he called for good measure with a point of a finger and a raise of one eyebrow. You breathed a short sound of amusement before rolling your shoulders back, blinking away the dryness in your eyes, and jogging after Kelly, no small number of butterflies wreaking havoc in your stomach.
Kelly glanced over his shoulder only once to check you were following, but aside from that he didn’t say a word, walking through hallways and beds towards his office. He opened the door and stood aside for you to go in before moving after you. After he shut the door, he took a moment to himself. His head dipped down, teeth chewing at his bottom lip, one hand on his hip while the other rested against his forehead. You weren’t entirely sure what to do. You had spent countless hours in his office, silently doing your own thing as he worked through paperwork, and you had never once felt out of place before today. Sitting on the chair almost seemed to be a sign of defeat. The bed would be more.
You both knew what the point of discussion was. You were ready to make your point, no matter how drained and aching for sleep you were.
Kelly lifted his head. Hesitated for a moment. Ran his tongue around his mouth. Then, “You wanna tell me why Chief Tiberg called me in today to discuss your transfer papers to another instructor for rescue class?”
You blinked in surprise. That hadn’t been entirely what you’d expected.
Kelly’s brows were raised in stern expectation and you found yourself impulsively pulling your sleeves down to your wrists. “It’s really not what it sounds like.”
“Well, that’s not what Tiberg thinks.” Kelly dropped his arms and crossed them over his chest as he leant back against the door. He fixed you with a look so rare you felt uncomfortable. Never in your life had you felt uncomfortable around Kelly, but you’d both had to have known that your fire training would cause more rifts than it had when you’d been a little girl and him the guy you knew as the name under the ‘second legal guardian’ section of some documents somewhere.
“He started asking me questions,” Kelly continued, none too gently, “if anything comes to mind about my teaching that’d make you wanna transfer.”
You barely refrained from gasping audibly. Instead, you frowned and stopped fidgeting with your sleeves. “Your teaching? Seriously? I told him…” You trailed off, irritation overwhelming your discomfort for a moment. Kelly made a gesture with his hands, a clear “I’m listening”, and you sighed, finally resigning yourself to sitting at the end of his bed. Your forearms rested on your thighs as you leaned over and shook your head. “You as instructor and me as student, Kelly,” you started. “I don’t think it’s working. I know as a firefighter I’m supposed to be able to handle anything, take orders from anyone, and I can, but I…I can’t do my best work when I’m constantly trying to make you proud and worrying about disappointing you, Kelly. Because that’s what the Academy is. Everyone’s trying to impress someone. It’s different than when you’re actually on the job. Every time you yell…” You caught your top lip between your teeth, suddenly conscious of the fact your voice was trembling. In all honesty, you’d been hoping to avoid Kelly tonight. You’d gone straight to Tiberg after finishing at the Academy and had been intent on collapsing on the first comfy surface that looked free when you reached 51. You’d thought Kelly would go home after the first day of his short Instructor stint and considering his clothes you figured he’d thought so too, but Tiberg had obviously reached him first. You should have expected it. You shouldn’t have gone to Tiberg.
You swallowed the knot in your throat. “This kinda shit broke Matt and Gabby apart,” you stated slowly. “I don’t want the same thing to happen to us. And I get that it’s only been a day but…every day counts in this job, right? I told Tiberg that was the reason and he agreed and said it’d probably be for the best.”
When you hazarded a glance up at him, the lines in his forehead had decreased enough for you to feel slightly more at ease.
“Okay,” he said eventually. He did not sound okay.
“Kel, I don’t want you to be mad at me. This is what I was trying to avoid.”
“Could’ve avoided it properly by talking to me beforehand, Y/N.”
You rubbed a clammy hand down your face. “I didn’t have the guts to test that. I didn’t know how you’d react. Tiberg…I don’t understand why he said that.”
“‘Cause he’s an ass,” Kelly spoke around amusement that sounded ironically unamused. You thought his frustration would continue, but when he pushed himself away from the door to sit opposite you by his desk, the atmosphere shifted. “Look,” he said quietly, resting his forearms along the back of his chair. “I’m not mad, okay? I just don’t understand why you didn’t wanna talk to me. This is between us, no one else. You really think I’d have refused your transfer because you didn’t feel comfortable with me as your instructor?”
You vehemently shook your head. “I was more worried about you being upset or—or thinking I didn’t want to learn from you, because I do! I do, so much. But I’m not gonna be joining Squad yet, I’ll be joining Truck. I prefer to learn from you from afar, to be honest.”
“You’ll be okay taking orders from Matt?”
“Honestly? Better than I would be taking them from you.” You fell back on the bed and shut your eyes against the ceiling light. Emotion was welling in the pit of your chest, an awful result of the physical and mental struggles of the day. You adored the physicality, your dream of becoming a firefighter edging ever closer, and you had expected your emotions to be heightened…but you hadn’t expected it to come between you and Kelly. You could take a raised voice from Matt. He’d been your father more than your brother and though things were tamer at home than they would inevitably be on the job, you knew he would be able to act as your lieutenant without either of you worrying about the rules and orders. Kelly, on the other hand…your relationship was softer, in a sense. He could reprimand you fine, and had done in many aspects, but Fire Academy training was worse than being on the job. It was rough and person-centred, majorly opposing the sense of family and togetherness felt within a fire house. Kelly as Squad lieutenant and Kelly as Fire Academy instructor differed immensely, and you hadn’t liked it.
“I don’t know what the logic is here, Kelly,” you said quietly. “I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I’ll speak to Chief Tiberg and explain, or re-explain, more like, see if he—”
“Hey, hey, no, don’t. Just…leave Tiberg. Like I said, this is between us.” He dropped his chin to his forearms. “You thought I’d be upset?”
“I don’t know.”
“Yeah, you do.”
You sniffed. “Maybe, yeah. I would be.”
Despite the situation, Kelly let a sliver of a smile pull at his lips. Tiberg calling him in to discuss your transfer papers had been a bit of a blow. Though the Chief had annoyingly not disclosed the exact reason behind your wishes, he’d figured that had been it. His frustration had only come from you not telling him beforehand, though at your revelation, he couldn’t help but understand. You rarely did anything for yourself that would compromise another’s feelings.
Standing to his feet, he stretched his arms above his head and came to lie beside you, his legs hanging off the edge. He turned his head to look at you, noting the faint dampness of your cheeks beneath your closed eyes.
“Sweetie,” he said, “the only thing I’m upset about in this situation is that you didn’t feel confident enough to speak to me before you went to Tiberg. We could’ve worked this out together, gone and asked for a transfer together. Avoid a lot of emotions in the process. I wouldn’t have been upset, I promise. If anything, I’d have agreed.”
Your eyes flickered open to stare at the ceiling. “Really?”
“You think I enjoy the yelling?” He sighed and reached down to enclose your hand in his. “I know you’re supposed to keep your work life and home life separate, but who are we kidding? That never happens. If I hadn’t thought you might prefer someone you know teaching you, I would have gone to Tiberg and asked to transfer you myself before today had even started.”
There was a regretful sigh as you rubbed at your eyes with your free hand. “This shouldn’t have been so messy,” you whispered.
“Alright, get over here.” Kelly let go of your hand and moved his arm across you, pulling you close towards him. He pressed his lips to the top of your head as you muttered a quiet apology. “Let’s just forget about it. You’re not my student anymore, I’m not your instructor. But for what it’s worth, you were my best. I haven’t a doubt you’ll pass first time.” He paused for a second. “I’m so proud of you, you know that, right?”
You nodded, your head bobbing against his shoulder. You shut your eyes again and slung an arm over his chest, your next words hushed and slow. “Thanks for teaching me so far, both at the Academy and before.”
“You kidding? Highlight of my career, even if it was only one day. You’re not regretting it yet, are you?”
“No way.”
“That’s my girl.” He squeezed your shoulder. “You ready for tomorrow?” You didn’t respond, and your breaths evening out told him quite assuredly that you had quickly dropped off. Kelly watched you for a moment, one hand stroking the back of your head while his eyes roved your sleeping face. No longer were you the baby he’d helped learn to walk and talk. No longer were you the toddler who’d stolen helmets from the turnout room and walked into walls without complaint when you couldn’t see beneath it. No longer were you the girl who’d rope him into sleepovers with Shay and ask to help with imaginary 51 talent shows. You were an adult now, someone he rarely held like this anymore, so despite your discussion and despite the tension still apparent in the air, he made the best of it.
“Best damn firefighter,” he said to himself, and he meant each word.
