WS29.2.1, Biography of Shusun Jun
(His clan name was actually Yizhan. The Yizhan clan changed their clan name to Shusun during the Sinicisation reforms of Emperor Xiaowen. Also, providing some context and explanation for the Northern Wei practice of encouraging the suicides of officials' widows which started with him)
Biography
[Yizhan Jian]'s eldest son was Jun, courtesy name Chougui, [he was] intelligent at a young age. At the age of fifteen, attended the imperial palace as a retainer. Had a cautious and calm character, and did not exceed his capabilities. In order to be a horse mount archer, was transferred as a hunting official [1].
長子俊,字醜歸,少聰敏。年十五,內侍左右。性謹密,初無過行。以便弓馬,轉為獵郎.
Emperor Taizu [posthumous name Emperor Daowu, personal name Tuoba Gui] died, the Prince of Qinghe, Shao, shut the palace gates [2], and Taizong [posthumous name Emperor Mingyuan, personal name Tuoba Si] was outside [3]. Shao forced Jun to act to assist him. Although Jun on the outside submitted to Shao, on the inside he had true loyalty, therefore with Yuan [4] Mohan and others criticised Shao, pledging allegiance to Taizong. This affair is in the biography of Mohan.
太祖崩,清河王紹閉宮門,太宗在外。紹逼俊以為己援。俊外雖從紹,內實忠款,仍與元磨渾等說紹,得歸太宗。事在磨渾傳。
At this time of Taizong's retainers, only Che [5] Lutou, Wang Luo'er and others, were able to reach Jun and others' [assistance], [Taizong] was very pleased [with him], [Jun] acted as an attendant.
是時太宗左右,唯車路頭、王洛兒等,及得俊等,大悅,以為爪牙。
When Taizong succeeded to the throne, ordered that Jun, Mohan and others correct the errors of the retainers. Was transferred as a guard general and bestowed as Duke of Ancheng.
太宗即位,命俊與磨渾等拾遺左右。遷衞將軍,賜爵安城公。
The Prince of Zhuti, Yue, carried a knife in his bosom and entered within the imperial residence, to goad a major rebellion. Jun realised Yue's actions were unusual, and easily held his hand and pulled it back, thus within Yue's bosom there were two daggers, [Yue] was thereupon executed.
Taizong grasped Jun's significant merits from beginning to end, the policies of military affairs and civil administration were all according to his appointment, many officials starting their posts were earlier by Jun selected and inspected, and after that were presented and confirmed.
太宗以俊前後功重,軍國大計一以委之,群官上事,先由俊銓校,然後奏聞。
[Jun] had a just, fair and gentle character, and his form was not likely to be easily angered. [He was] loyal, devoted and genuine, and did not flatter his superiors or repress his subordinates. Every time he received an imperial edict and announced it to the outside, he would certainly announce [it] politely, the receivers would all be fulfilled and retreat, and those with confidential matters would turn away and arrive at the torch [6] again. Therefore his superiors and subordinates admired and praised him.
性平正柔和,未嘗有喜怒之色。忠篤愛厚,不諂上抑下。每奉詔宣外,必告示殷勤,受事者皆飽之而退,事密者倍至蒸仍。是以上下嘉歎。
Died in the first year of Taichang [416 CE], was twenty-eight [7] at the time, Taizong was excessively anguished and mournful, went in person and was deeply aggrieved. In all levels of society, there was no lacking in their pursuit of pity. Bestowed as Palace Attendant, Minister of Land and Water and Prince of Ancheng [8], with the posthumous name of Filial and Fundamental [xiaoyuan].
泰常元年卒,時年二十八,太宗甚痛悼之,親臨哀慟。朝野無不追惜。贈侍中、司空、安城王,諡孝元。
Was bestowed warm and bright rare utensils, carried using a sleeping carriage, guarded by soldiers leading their followers, and was buried [with other important people, including the imperial family] in the Jin Mausoleum. His son Pu inherited his rank. After [this], when esteemed ministers with great merit and special favour died, the rites with which they were paid their last respects were all according to the tradition of Jun's [9], but did not surpass that.
子蒲,襲爵。後有大功及寵幸貴臣薨,賻送終禮,依俊故事,無得踰之者.
[As a part of this], when Jun died, Taizong advised his wife Lady Huan [10] and said:
"When people in life share glory, in death it is appropriate to share a tomb. The capacity for [you] to be buried with the dead may be an undertaking of [your] desire." [11]
Lady Huan thus hanged herself and died, and was thereupon jointly interred there.
初,俊既卒,太宗命其妻桓氏曰:「夫生既共榮,沒宜同穴,能殉葬者可任意。」桓氏乃縊而死,遂合葬焉。
Northern Wei emperors and princes would often go on hunts with their attendants. I presume that Yizhan Jun would attend the emperor or a prince's hunting trip.
2. Tuoba Shao had assassinated Tuoba Gui.
3. Tuoba Si had earlier fled the capital of Pingcheng to avoid his father's wrath.
4. Should be Tuoba Mohan, as the imperial clan name of Tuoba was changed to Yuan by Emperor Xiaowen.
5. Should be Chekun Lutou, as the Chekun clan shortened their clan name under the reforms of Emperor Xiaowen.
6. I presume that 蒸 refers to a type of torch in this context. Torches would be lit as a signal during this time.
7. By East Asian age reckoning, in which a person is considered 1 year old at birth and becomes a year older at New Year, regardless of individual birthday. By Western age reckoning, he would be 26 or 27 years old.
8. He received the title of Duke of Ancheng in his lifetime; he was posthumously promoted to the rank of prince.
9. This likely refers to the death of the wives of these officials, which is outlined in the section below this statement.
10. Should be Lady Wuwan, as the Wuwan clan changed their clan name to Huan under the reforms of Emperor Xiaowen.
11. The Zizhi Tongjian phrases this differently, stating: "In life you shared honour with him [Yizhan Jun], will you share his sadness in death?" The History of the Northern Dynasties records an identical phrase to the Book of Wei, so Sima Guang likely paraphrased the earlier phrase in his record. The outcome was the same.
The Northern Wei practice
The death of Yizhan Jun started a practice in which the wives of powerful and favoured officials would be encouraged into committing suicide upon the official's death. This was first hinted using the euphemism "buried according to the rites of Shusun Jun".
(Technically, Tuoba Si had earlier poisoned Wang Luo'er's wife, but this was an irregular case. All other women to die to this practice were encouraged to commit suicide, yet she was poisoned, and the Weishu dates this practice to Shusun Jun, not Wang Luo'er. Wang Luo'er's wife may have been poisoned for a different reason)
This practice started with Tuoba Si and Yizhan Jun, but it continued into his son Tuoba Tao's reign. Tuoba Tao later buried his official Lu (Tufulu) Luyuan with the rites of Yizhan Jun, indicating this practice. Tufulu Luyuan's rites were even greater, so from then on, this practice was euphemised as "buried according to the rites of Lu Luyuan", which should indicate this practice, as Lu Luyuan was buried with this practice.
I think that although Tuoba Si claimed burial etiquette as his reasoning, the actual reasoning was probably to prevent other powerful tribes from coming to power the same way the Tuobas themselves did - using their maternal connections.
Tuoba Gui used his connections to the Helan and Murong tribes to claim power for himself. Later, Tuoba Shao's attempted seizure of power likely relied on his maternal tribe, the Helan tribe, making two incidents where this method of gaining power was attempted. Tuoba Gui created 子贵母死, and Tuoba Si this policy, to prevent others from using this method of gaining power.
Though the Tuoba clan did not restrict the greater freedom of common women, they restricted the women in elite classes, who they saw as being a threat to their power. Due to their knowledge that they only came to power with the help of maternal connections, they became fearful of these connections being exploited.
It is for this reason that the practice continued after the death of Tuoba Si, and continued to as far as Empress Dowager Feng's regency over Emperor Xiaowen. The practice was likely abolished during the sinicisation reforms of Emperor Xiaowen.

Joy of Life S1 Ep 45 liveblogging
watching for the 1st time, so don't tell me secrets ;)
I'm so close to season end and then I can allow myself to binge Heroes 🙌
FX are you seriously going to let yourself be goaded into a dumb ass battle???
Ok he and Saintess kicking each other around will be fun and not mortally perilous. Much better. Beat his ass, girl! It's good 4 him.
They're making a spectacle of themselves, good job guys. I love this fake dating bromance. PLEASE B FRIENDS AND DON'T DIE
hey don't bring lil Shen sis into this! interrogation is a bit too far
ok good, that was close.
Emperor says, don't forget to update the next chapters of your WIP on the road
FX like me is suspicious of good news
Ugly Beard is so dramatic, people in this drama keep announcing their future murder attempts
Emperor knows that He Daoren is the real spy head. But even she knows Fan Xian isn't their greatest enemy.
More Saintess & Fan Xian bromance. She's not people! 😍😍😍
awwwwwww Xiao En is doing the errand for Zhuang Mohan 😭😭😭😭😭😭 He is so unexpectedly kind sometimes it breaks my heart.
"I promise you. I won't become this kind of person." 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
"All my life, I paid attention to countless books. I wrote so many literary works, but what I'm most happy with, it's this life."
This is one of those things about long, meandering cdramas. They allow so many small sentimental moments and just let characters breathe. No one talks about fate, the bitter sweetness of life, regret, resignation, and grief like cdramas do. When it works, it really works.
Is Shen Zhong gonna rebel??? I'm feeling so anxious at his chill in the courtyard. I haven't forgotten about the missing money, enough to fund an army
Oh yeeeeeeeeeah it's not looking good 😬
SAVE THE SAINTESS AND THE EMPEROR AND SI LILI. I know FX is gonna be fine. I am not ok with them dying. !!!!!!!!!! (Wang Qinian was already potentially dead the moment he became the replacement bestie. 💀)
NOOOOOOOOOO Saintess showing up nope nope run!!! RUN GIRL RUN.

there's something morally suspect about telling chinese trainees to do kpop instead of cpop but all of these girls like wang ju, gao yingxi, luo yitian, liu meng, zhong feifei, chen zhuoxuan, lu xiaocao, wang mohan, etc. would do so well...the kpoppies would eat them right up

i got to the epic poetry recital scene in ep 27 of Joy of Life and ahhhh i love it so!!! i’m an uncultured swine that can only recite maybe 5 chinese poems lolol but still, goosebumps all over. it was done so well!
- fan xian prefaces it by saying he memorised these poems from a 仙境 /paradise. “and you’re telling me you memorised all of them?” guo senior taunts. “you don’t know, that period of memories are carved into my mind as if by knives and axes. every word i saw and every book i read i remember to the most precise detail vividly.”
sounds badass. but the domestic Chinese audience watching it knows that he’s referring to the gaokao/college entrance exam where memorising tons of these poems are required HAHAHA
- true enough wang juan the scriptwriter did choose only poems that are required for gaokao. this way it stands true to the plot point of fan xian being considered a literary genius in qingguo because he’s a modern person who benefits from being taught all these literary works through the 9 yr education pathway. and it also resonates with the audience as they too have memorised the same poems before.
- zhang ruoyun’s line delivery was AMAZING. i got so excited and emotional the moment he threw the vat of wine aside and began reciting 将进酒 as he stumbled around drunk but at the same time voice and expression so sure and full of conviction.
Tumblr media
- some of the poems fan xian recites apart from being legends in their own right also speak of his loneliness and how alone he is, in a land that is not his own, in a time period that is not his own. 水调歌头 written by su dongpo when he was sent to an appointment far away about his longing for his brother. ending off with chen zi ang’s 前不见古人 后不见来者 念天地之悠悠 独怆然而涕下 “i see no ancestors before me, i see no descendants behind me, thinking of how vast and limitless the universe is, alone and sorrowful i weep” (ok v loose translation lol excuse this!!!) but yet while he stands solitary, an outsider in every aspect in this AU, he is at the same time not alone as he recites poetry that came from all the poet greats throughout chinese history. thousands of years of culture stand with him as well.
Tumblr media
- and after reciting over a hundred poems and making zhuang mohan vomit blood (literally), he falls to the ground and right before he passes out drunk goes “ 我醉欲眠卿且去。。。。。。去nmd。” basically a “I’m drunk and want to sleep, you may go [up to this point an actual poem]... go f*** yourself.”
the best conclusion to the best poetry recital 庆国 is ever gonna see!

Aaaaahhhh I see you are a Joy Of Life fan as well ! This was the best drama of 2019 for me and I was a shipper of Fan Xian and SiLiLi cause their relationship went from disdain(FX's side) and indifference(SLL tried and kill him) to "look how I care for this lady" of FX'side and " I think I am in love" of beautiful SiLiLi. I loved the developpment of that relationship a lot namely by the way she went through some physical trials to help him. If I was the writer I would make them OTP. I loved Haitang Duo Duo as well. The way Wang Juan treats and fleshs out all of this show's characters even the smallest ones (Guo BuaKun minions, the bandits hired by Wan'er's dad's sidekick or Zhang Mohan to name a few) has yet to be touched. The rebel princess is not too bad at it by the way they fleshed out Wang's secret fighters and captain Mu's character in ep 15 to 19. They were not only tools and I loved the teamwork. Even crown prince is given more dimension. He sincerely care for his parents and trusts XiaoQi who requested to investigate the prev Emperor death (even her mom tries and do shit). Plus I am surprised by how he has never hold grudge against Zidan for beating him. In other dramas his role would have been even more dense and totally unlikable. He is stupid for sure and the rape thing he did is unacceptable. 2nd prince was fleshed out as well. He really loved Mi'er. Some people complain that the Main leads are too perfect and have no flaws but this is a perfection well done cause of the experience and maturity of the characters. They don't bore me. Gotta love how Liu Duan Duan is in both dramas and he will act in Wang Juan's Snow Stride sword. Raspey voiced Guy is on a roll ! Now you know a drama is mature quality when Liu is casted in there 😁
Now lady what is your opinion about the similarities btw JOL and TRP that make both dramas so engaging ? I would like to hear it from you cause I feel you got more eyes for details than I do.
I am afraid I was a rabid Fan Xian x Lin Wan’er shipper. I like Duoduo a lot but never felt a romantic vibe between her and FX (more like best platonic buddies) and wasn’t too interested in Si LiLi much one way or another.
I agree, JoL was very well written and fleshed out.
I honestly don’t think JoL and Rebel Princess have much in common other than both being period dramas (well, JoL sort of being a period drama.) The one thing I do love about both of them, other than across the board excellent acting, is that it has smart characters, not characters who the story says are smart but act like five year olds.

Week In Review
Tumblr media
The visit of two foreign diplomats and the detention of a famous actress were among the events that took place over the past week. Burma Associated Press brings you a roundup of the past seven days’ significant events.
Foreign ministers visit Myanmar
The foreign ministers of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and China gathered in Bagan, Mandalay Region, on July 4 for a regional meeting.
The ministers were in Myanmar to attend a meeting of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation initiative that seeks to foster cooperation among six countries including Myanmar  that are situated along the Mekong River.
The seventh gathering of the initiative was held to discuss the Mekong-Lancang cooperation process, future plans, and exchange views on ways to address current challenges.
The meeting was co-chaired by junta Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi. Wang Yi is the highest ranking Chinese official to visit Myanmar since the military seized power.
On the sidelines of the event, Wang also met with Cambodian Foreing Minister Prak Sokhonn, who is also Asean’s special envoy for Myanmar.
The Chinese foreign minister encouraged all political parties in Myanmar to “prioritise the big picture and the interests of the people, take rational and pragmatic efforts, accommodate and understand each other, and take into account the reasonable demands of all parties so as to restore stability and achieve peace”. He also expressed appreciation for Prak Sokhonn’s efforts as ASEAN special to address the turmoil in Myanmar.
After the Lancang-Mekong meeting Prak Sokhonn stayed on for several days in his ASEAN capacity to meet with junta representatives about the situation in Myanmar. His attempts to meet with opposition representatives, in particular Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, were again rejected by the military junta.
Famous actress believed detained
Actress Thinzar Wint Kyaw was reported to have been detained for interrogation on Wednesday, according to reports on social media and the internet.
An official of the Shan State Progressive Party later confirmed that the reports were credible.
The actress had gone to visit Hippar Waterfall and Wan Hai in Kethi Township, southern Shan State, on July 3 to film a documentary to help promote the area, the SSPP said.
According to reports, she had completed filming and was leaving the Wan Hai area on Wednesday morning when the car she was travelling in was detained at a checkpoint.
When reached for comment on the matter on Wednesday evening, junta spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun said he was unaware of the matter.
As of Friday night there had been no further news of her whereabouts or wellbeing.
Two Indian citizens killed in Tamu
The People’s Defence Force (PDF) in Tamu, Sagaing Region says two men in a pro-military militia killed two Indian citizens in the town on the Myanmar-India border on Tuesday.
The victims, identified as P Mohan, 28, and M Iyanar, 38, were reported to have been shot dead on Tuesday by pro-junta Pyu Saw Htee members.
The Tamu PDF identified the alleged killers as Phoe Sein and Zaw Ye, who were known to be Pyu Saw Htee members, and said the shooting took place in an area known to be a Pyu Saw Htee stronghold.
Residents from Moreh, the town on the Indian side of the border, burned down a police outpost on the Myanmar side of the border on Wednesday after they were prevented from retrieving the bodies of the victims because they had already been cremated.
Military spokesman claimed that the bodies of the victims were cremated earlier on Wednesday after no one claimed them.
A PDF spokesman said that the military cremated the victims to hide evidence of how the men were killed. The men had been reportedly shot three times each in the head.
Garment workers protest
An estimated 2,000 workers protested at a garment factory in Yangon’s Zaykabar Industrial Park in Mingaladon Township on Thursday morning, declaring that their basic rights had been violated.
The workers are employed by a factory making sports clothing that is said to be owned by Canadian nationals.
Police and soldiers were reported to have gone to the factory on Thursday morning to try to mediate between the workers and their managers and to control the crowd.
Workers at the protest told journalists they were protesting the factory’s unfair wage cuts and unrealistic work quotas. The workers said they were required to make an unrealistic number of clothing items a day and had their pay docked if the target was not met. The quota was so high that they said they were unable to take lunch breaks or go to the bathroom.
The protest is believed to be the first since the military seized power in February last year.
Car rams peaceful protesters
A vehicle is reported to have hit a small group of protesters in Yangon’s Hlaing Township, on Thursday.
The incident occurred at around 3pm, shortly after some 20 people carrying a protest banner started shouting slogans near the Thukha bus stop on Insein Road.
One of the members of the group said the car rammed into them just seconds after they started their protest and one  of them was flung into the air by the impact.
A spokesman for the All Burma Federation of Student Unions said all the protesters managed to flee the scene.
The protest was being held to mark the 60th anniversary of the day that Myanmar’s first dictator, General Ne Win, blew up the Yangon University Student Union building on July 7, 1962.
Suzuki halts Myanmar production
Business news site Nikkei Asia reported on Friday that Japanese automaker Suzuki has suspended vehicle production in two factories in Myanmar on July 1.
Suzuki confirmed the matter on Friday, clarifying that the move was due to its inability to import necessary parts now that the military government is insisting on allocating foreign currency based on what it deems necessary.
Before July 1, Suzuki had scaled back production in the country, using imported parts in its inventory. However, "we ran out of stock," a Suzuki representative said, "and it has become difficult to continue production."
The company said that production workers would be put on furlough but would keep their jobs.
Suzuki's plants had been shuttered for nine months after the military seized power in February 2021.
Myanmar’s currency shortage has resulted in the military authorities stepping up measures to curb imports.
The automaker sold 13,000 vehicles in Myanmar in 2019, controlling 60% of the country's new car market. Because of its plant closure, it sold only about 3,600 units in 2021.
Protest was cracked down by vehicle on 7th July
The protesters who joined the protest as the remark to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of 7th July were craked by vehicle and that video was spread to social media and people comment that that was did by junta.
According to that video record, white Belta 7J 5050 rammed into the protest and one person got injured.
After checking the information of that car in Car License Checker and some mobile applications,it was not registered yet.
The junta enjoyed ramming by car towards the protests and its crack down of protest on 5th December 2021 in Kyimyintaing,Yangon was quite notorious in worldwide.
