Hi, skykids and artists alike!Â
WARNING: THIS IS LONG. I can't stop yappin'.
I was taking a series of screenshots of my art process for my own reference (to review later, see how my process has changed, etc. Iâm not much of a timelapser) and figured Iâd share my process and show off how much the game Sky: COTL has DRAMATICALLY improved my art (and also have a post to show people in the very, hopefully, unlikely chance anyone ever doubts that I draw my own art). I also have seen a lack of written out with screenshots explanations of art, as video format becomes more popular across not only Youtube, but Instagram and Tiktok as well. This is not a learning style I jive with, so this is something for all the artists out there looking for this kinda thing.Â
For reference, here is my FIRST EVER Sky digital painting compared to my most recent (before the one used for this lil infodump). <3 This is CSP specific as far as brushes go, but Iâve seen people make amazing art in freaking PowerPoint, so if I can do it, you can do it.Â
Fâreal. This is the process of a VERY LAZY artist with hand tremors and hecked up wrist ligaments as a result of an autoimmune disease.. Iâm talking, drawing in bed in a blanket nest watching vodcasts and cuddling cats.Â
(May 2024) -----> (January 2025)Â
Added info - the pic on the left is exactly why I wanted to do this. I'm even a little embarrassed by it, now, but when I had originally posted it on another platform, I was questioned and disbelieved that I was able to draw a background at all. This was the start of me taking digital painting seriously (versus general character/creature design) with lineart and a cell shading style. That disbelief from someone who knew me IRL hurt a lot, and I often have the concern of that happening again. This is me alleviating that anxiety once and for all, so I can finally move past it. YAH, FRIENDO, THIS IS MY THERAPY SESSION.
Anyway; Iâm nowhere near new to art, but itâs always been a hobby for me so I never sought to actively improve with proper studies -- but wanting to create lore for my silly lil skydude forced my hand. With a semi-open world game thatâs genuinely gorgeous made collecting references easy, and the Sky community here on Tumblr has not only inspired but encouraged me to keep going despite 2024 being a very rough year. This game has brought me joy, and I hope you find this lil doodad helpful. đŻïž
Now on with the show! This piece will be a part of a little series Iâm working on that will include lyrics to a song that gives me the biggest Sky vibes (To Thus Onto Tyrants by The Oh Hellos).Â
The brush that did the heavy lifting (âspread pencilâ) seems to be either very elusive or no longer available. Everything else is listed here :)Â
What I could find:Â
Turnip Pen - Default brush in CSP
âCrunchyâ - Specifically the second to last one in this brushpackÂ
âHard Round V1âÂ
âHard Round V2âÂ
âYN Soft Roundâ (Not free, sorry ): )Â
âPecasâ - for sparkleys
âToothbrushâ - For more sparkleys
So the first step is to gather references. Theyâre a MUST HAVE and DONâT LET ANYONE ELSE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. Use references, redline, and yes - EVEN TRACE. I may make a lil thingy about how to do these things ethically, but for now, just art process. Letâs see what references I used: self harvested!Â

Shout out to the Skykid screaming in the background.Â
I also used this for a reference for the moth that I grabbed off the interwebs-Â

For this, I wanted to try and recreate what it felt like as a moth (but after getting at least one starboi lol). Isle of Dawn will always hold a very special place in my heart. The first impression was impactful, even though I was incredibly confused on what I was doing. I knew I wanted the temple, but thereâs something so calming and melancholy about that first cave. Putting these references together, I got the most hot garbage sketch Iâve ever done - but itâs okay! Weâre not doing any lineart, so we WANT messy. The more you work on a sketch at this stage, the harder and more intimidating it will be to get to the next step. Youâll become too attached to those details and things you sketched, that if you have to go over them later it will be devastating. Just using this to work out composition :)Â
Currently, I have two main layers (CSP makes an automatic background and I just leave that one alone and do not count this as a layer)
Top - moth sketch
Bottom - everything else
Moving forward, weâre working in three main sections. Background, midground, and foreground. I show a screenshot of how I organized these layers later.Â
The next step is to block in colors. Layer styles are VALID and AMAZING, I do not use them much. They have their time and place, and I prefer to keep those for finishing touches. For now, Iâm just doing my best to eyeball colors I like from the reference photos. Color picking is amazing and helpful too, but Iâll add a little note* at the end about why I try to avoid doing that too often from my reference.Â
I put the colors on their respective layers (Four to start with. One for each mentioned above, and another for the moth). I try to block out shading and lighting but I keep it sloppy because itâs likely to change a LOT. This is just planning and fiddling, seeing what colors look good together.Â
(Spread Pencil is the one brush I couldnât find >: at this point, this is the ONLY brush Iâve used. Donât be tempted by blending things yet. Be sloppy.)Â
Once I get the general idea of what I want, I WORK FROM THE BACK. I hid any layer that would be âblockingâ that section and allow myself to go âoutside the linesâ a bit. The overlap is helpful when making changes to the âfrontâ elements later. Remember, weâre still being SUPER MESSY.
I kept the moth/foreground visible so I can still check that the general color theme was working.Â
Hide the sketch layer. Do it. Weâre painting, not doing lineart. You gotta. I believe in you. Look at this slop. Beautiful.Â
Alright, now weâre cooking! The layers are in the following order going from top (front) to bottom (back):Â
-Moth sketch (will be hidden later)Â
-Moth colorsÂ
-Background sketch (will be hidden later)Â
-The rock the moth is sitting on and that little rock section on the bottom left
-The rock behind the moth (hidden in this screenshot)Â
-The rest of the caveÂ
-The templeÂ
At some point around here I used âCrunchyâ on the clouds to blend em a bit.Â

NOW IS THE FUN PART. RENDERIIINNNGGGGGG. I started with the stairs because they looked annoying. USE YOUR LINE/SHAPE AND SELECTION TOOLS. These will help you keep your lines straight and achieve crispiness if you desire. More on the stairs in a moment, but while youâre doing this, remember toÂ
ZOOM THE HECKIE OUT. Make it thumbnail sized and squint. Can you still tell what youâre painting? Evaluate. Are the colors working well together? Is there enough contrast? Howâs that composition doing? Zooming out rocks.Â
After taking a moment to zoom out and squint, I came up with the following notes:Â
Do this regularly throughout your process, even if youâre in the middle of something mundane like drawing stairs. A LOT more contrast is needed, and taking a moment to notate this will help prevent you from doing TOO much that youâll regret later when you end up covering it up to fix these issues you missed earlier.Â
Back to the stairs.Â
I blocked things in with the line tool and the turnip pen, then scribbled it around using âHard Round V2â. When I say scribble, I mean literally. Scribble. Itâs fun and freeing. Weâre not trying to be precise or make anything hyper realistic. We just gotta get those colors down yknow.Â
Good luck.Â
Water is weird, and I donât understand it. We guess and hope for the best. Remember that water is clear, and for the most part youâll be able to see through it, so unless you have a blue toned drawing (like this one), the water itself may not be blue. I generally color pick the areas around it and lighten/darken it based on those. I also knew thereâd be a light beam in this area, and the reflection from the mothâs candle so some bright oranges and yellows were nice to add, as well. Donât forget reflections/highlights if the scene calls for it!Â
Time for the part that actually requires a shred of skill. Thankfully, this pose is very simple and the mothâs design is, well, a moth. Donât be afraid to toggle that sketch layer on and off for this. The moth is the main focus, and should be clear and easy to read as such - requiring a bit more work for colors and shape language.Â
Donât work on one single thing for long. The moment your brain goes âim getting annoyed/frustrated/boredâ, move to another piece of the painting. If you notice your character has a horrible tangent with a background piece and itâs just really bothering you - stop working on the character and fix that background area. Give it a bit more bulge (or less), shift things around. Paint over stuff.Â
âBut I drew this really well, and it would be a shame to cover it up if I wonât be able to do it that well again!â You may ponder, anxiety filling your chest at the very thought of redrawing a hand or that one rock that just looks really, really good somehow.Â
And to that I ask - why wonât you be able to do it again? You did it once before, CLEARLY you have the skill and ability. If youâre worried, draw over it on a new layer so if you have to fall back on the old thing, you can. ART IS FUN. Donât let it stress you out too much. The moment you look at that canvas and go âyou know what, I CAN do it againâ, you will be able to do it again.Â
Trust me.Â
With some more scribbling done, we can start detailing things that arenât stairs. Yay! Letâs work from the back again.
LITERALLY. SCRIBBLE.
You can start blending around now, too, though. Weâre getting there, and look at all we have to show for it! I tried to mimic the clouds as best I could from the screenshot because like water - they are weird and wonky and yah, hard. Cloud brushes can be helpful, but give you significantly less control IMO, but to each their own and whatever works for you, works.Â
BG looking good, but remember ZOOM OUT. I can see the contrast of the temple/background elements looks a bit better now, and now that Iâm bored with that, I wanna bounce to that midground area, and fix up the moth a bit more. I also used an ADD (GLOW) layer to messily test some different ways to paint light beams and to find a nice color. I settled on the same yellow I used on the candle flame. I didnât work too hard on this just yet, since thereâs a lot of elements that will hit that light that I havenât even thought about yet.Â
I fiddle with the main cave texture a LOT. Painting over it entirely MULTIPLE TIMES to find something that sticks. What you see here is not it. I also added some details to the âmoth rocksâ but this also changes a little as we go.Â
Painting/art is a lot of push and pull. You add some darkness, take away some. Add some light, take away some. Add an element, remove one. Go with the flow and trust yourself. Turn on an audiobook or a movie and turn off your brain while you plop colors here and there. An artist I VERY MUCH look up to (Julia Lepetit of Drawfee and Secret Sleepover Society) said, âZoom in and zone outâ. Itâs time to turn off that brain and paint.Â
I zoned out too hard and stopped taking screenshots because oops. On the top left shows the YN Soft Round, Pecas, and Toothbrush, in that order going from the top and counter clockwise.Â
I darkened up the cave quite a bit and finally settled on a look for those upper rock formations. I used a MULTIPLY layer to darken up the mothâs shadow a bit, then merged the layers and used those same colors to blend it with the rest of the rock. I also deleted and added a new ADD (GLOW) layer and fixed up that lighting. This is where we get to darken shadows and add highlights and bounce light to things. Anything in bright, direct light has its original color showing through (from the original layer itâs colored on, that wonky light blue area by the stairs). Rim lighting is a great way to separate elements like this (the different rock edges) without having to use a gajillion different shades/values of the same boring blue to make it stand out.Â
Details on the moth are also done now - mostly in the hair. A few hair strands, ESPECIALLY in Sky with the white hair we all have - looks incredible in a painty style IMO. I also SHOULD HAVE added the star on the mothâs cape at this point, but BOIIS, GORLS, AND CRYPTIDS, i forgot until I saved/exported it and had to go back and fix it. But anyway, so you donât have to scroll up, hereâs the finished piece again:Â
Thank you for reading, if you did! I hope it was helpful, or at the very least served me in the future like this post is intended to do!
And I will leave you off with the promised note* about color picking -
Color picking from a reference can be really cool and easy and tempting, but you know what makes that NOT work? Color theory. When you blend your colors (this goes for real life, too), there's a LOT more grey and diluted tones than you'd expect. A lot of these bright colors aren't ACTUALLY bright, save for the details on the candle light and the ADD (GLOW) layers. The orange reflections on the rocks and water are actually quite dark and diluted, but because it contrasts so well with the darker blues - it looks a lot brighter. Blending these colors together allows for a more natural soft light. This is also why I try to work on so few layers for pieces like this that are relatively simple. I can easily take a bright color and use a softy kind of brush - the hard round v1 brush is GREAT for this, a little bit of pressure over the colors you already painted down will blend them together with some minor elbow grease and mindfulness. It gets a more natural transition between your lights and darks.
Where as if you zoom in on your reference and color pick - look at it. Look at it all zoomed up, I BEG you. Make it super pixely, and you will see how much that 'one' color varies in that entire area. Unless you're color picking pixel by pixel, which at that point you're not really drawing/painting at all, it's just not going to work out and help you recreate that reference.
My personal preference is to color pick for base colors to get me started with a vibe, and then once I have a few colors down, I'm eyeballing it all the way baybee.

How Zutara Shouldâve Happened (my take anyways, if Zuko still joined the Gaang in Season Three)
Alright, so Iâm a Zutara shipper. Anyways, hereâs my rant of the day.
So, if Zutara were to be cannon, letâs say that we wouldnât change the cannon, other than that. Also full disclaimer, I donât really like Kataang. Itâs cute, and sweet, buuuut I think that they would be better off single or with other people. I personally ship Taang so much-
When I first watched it, I really wanted Katara to end up single. I thought that would be a fitting ending for her story. But hey, she didnât, and thatâs fine.
This is not an anti Kataang post, seriously. If you ship it, cool, I donât, but everyone had different opinions. Just please donât come to my inbox and yell at me.
Aight, under the cut bc it got long.
So, if we werenât gonna change the cannon, Zuko still joins in season three and all. Katara and him would still have a rocky relationship at first, and for good reason, I mean wtf Zuko what happened at the CoTL?
Rant for another day
Anyways-
What I would think is that Katara couldnât help but notice how Zuko is trying to gain their, and her trust. I mean, sheâs pissed but still, she notices. It doesnât make her forgive him or anything, and it shouldnât, but she does see it.
Now, Iâm thinking little moments. Like when he shoved her out of the way of the falling rocks? Yeah, she still snaps at him, but maybe after sheâs a little less fiery. Just a bit.
And then after TSR, things start to change. Of course, we get the iconic hug, but!! I want another scene, when theyâre coming back from the trip.
One thing that always bothers me when I read Zutara stuff is that writers rarely address Zukos betrayal in TCoTL. Like,,, maybe I havenât read the right fanfics but câmon guys.
I really think, no, I know that Katara and Zuko should address that. I really want a scene, when theyâre coming back, while Katara is sorting out whether to forgive him or not, I want them to talk about it. And sorry if itâs OOC- But Like so:
Katara: Why did you do it?
Zuko: ...do what?
Katara: Why did you fight with Azula? I thought you changed, I thought you wouldâve fought with us.
Zuko: I-
[ a moment of quiet]
Zuko: I thought about it, and I almost did-
Katara: [turns around to face him] Then why didnât you? Why did you choose that?
Zuko: I wanted my honor. I wanted to go home, and I thought- I though that if I fought with her, I could get my honor back.
[Katara doesnât answer.]
Zuko: But Im sorry. I am.
Katara, quietly: I thought you changed...
Zuko: I have, now, I mean.
Katara: Why was your honor so important to you anyways? And what do you mean by âwanted to go homeâ?
Zuko: I- I was banished. Until I found the Avatar, I couldnât go back.
[Katara turns, studying him, then turns back around]
Katara: ...You couldnât go back, ever?
Zuko: No.
[She doesnât speak after that, and neither does he.]
Okay, so maybe that was too OOC, but they did need to have a conversation something like that. A conversation where Zuko explained, at least a bit about why he fought with Azula.
And then, after that, the hug and forgiveness. But that was a turning point in their relationship, and I donât like that so little fic writers address that.
And then!! I want little moments. Just small moments, maybe a bit more teasing, a bit more concern on Kataras part.
Also, letâs face it: Zuko would be simping. Katara wouldnât be lovey dovey, no, she wouldnât. Zuko would be the simp, Zuko would be the one stuttering slightly at teasing and stuff.
Just little moments, nothing big bc câmon, theyâre kids. Theyâre teenagers in the belp middle of a war.
Speaking of which! I really want one more scene between them. After Aangs noncon kiss in the Ember Island Players, I want there to be a scene where Zuko finds Katara and she vents to him.
Also Iâve been losing my damn mind trying to find a gif series for that bc someone on Tumblr made it and I canât find it- fkdndd
Okay, but along with a huge chunk of the fandom, it really makes me mad that they didnât show more of Kataras reaction, and that Aang didnât apologize. Like wtf Aang.
I wouldâve been fine with anyone coming to Katara, or telling Aang that was wrong but- Didnât happen. They just glossed over that part smh.
But! Say Zuko were to come and talk with her about it. And then at the end, he might ask her why she was confused, Maybe something like this:
Zuko: If you donât mind, why are you so confused?
Katara: I donât know! But itâs in the middle of war. It isnât over, and now isnât the time for... for romance.
Zuko: But that doesnât mean that you canât be happy. I mean, look at Sokka.
Katara: Iâm not Sokka.
[They both go quiet for a minute]
Katara: Sorry, Im just... Itâs too much to deal with right now, and we have to focus on ending the war.
Zuko: No, I get that. Itâs fine.
Katara: Iâm just- Iâm confused, and now isnât the time and-
[She pauses, and the two look at each other for a moment. All is quiet.]
Zuko: I.. can go, if you want. If you need some space.
Katara: Yeah, that would probably help.
[Zuko walks away. As he does, Katara is staring at his back, a thoughtful expression on her face]
Yes, yes, I think that would make sense in the romance line. Mirroring when Zuko was staring at Kataras back.
Alright, so everything would be same, up to Katara healing Zuko after the Agni Kai. But there would be subtle differences. She takes his hand and holds it instead of putting her hand on his back. No big âI love youâ or whatever. Just holds his hand, and maybe a line like âWe- I couldâve lost you!â Maybe.
And then! One last thing, instead of that long Kataang kiss at the end, a scene between Katara and Zuko, talking about their futures.
Iâm a really big fan of Water Tribe Ambassador Katara, and it shows.
Katara: So.. Fire Lord Zuko, huh? Finally regained your honor?
Zuko: [groans] Yes, now stop it.
Katara: [laughs] Nope, never gonna stop.
[Theres a minute of quiet]
Zuko: And what about you? Are you going back to the SWT?
Katara: I am. The Northern and Southern tribes... they need to connect again, not become one, but the connection was frayed with the war, and someone has to take a step to rebuild it.
Zuko: What about the Air Temples?
Katara: Thatâs up to Aang. Iâll help him of course, we all will, but heâs the last air bender. Heâll take care of them, like Iâll take care of the Water tribes.
Zuko: With Sokka too, Iâm guessing.
Katara: I donât know about that, actually. Sokka may want to travel a bit, scope out the world.
Zuko: And you donât?
Katara: I do, and I will. Sokka and I, regardless of whatever travel, weâll work together to take care of the tribes.
Zuko: [chuckles] And Iâll be here. Iâm going to try to undo the damage the war did. Open up relations again in the Earth Kingdom, sort out the colonies.
Katara: Donât overwork yourself.
Zuko: You shouldnât either.
[She laughs, and stops in front of the pond, looking at the turtle ducks]
Katara: Zuko..
Zuko: What?
Katara: [turns to face him] We... went through a lot. And I have something that I need to tell you.
Zuko, sweating slightly: ..yes?
Katara: Relax, itâs nothing bad!
Katara: I..
[Katara takes his hand and smiles. Zukos eyes widen and he looks down at their hands]
Katara: Well?
[Zuko looks back up and smiles at her.]
Zuko: Youâre going to visit sometime, right?
Katara: Course I will.
[He smiles again, and intertwines their fingers. Itâs quiet once more, then off in the distance, Sokka yells something]
Katara: [laughs] Now câmon, your Honor. Letâs go.
[She pulls Zuko down the path towards their friends, and all their laughter can be heard. The End comes up, and the credits roll]
So!!
No big ily confession, no long kiss. Why? Because theyâre kids. Theyâre fourteen and sixteen, there shouldnt be an ily, there shouldnât be an uncomfortably long kiss.
Later, of course. But now? Letâs them just hold hands and tease each other and relax a bit.
Anyways, thatâs my Zutara rant of the day, thanks for listening.

hi! random question that youâre not obligated to answer (i just love your ka metas): do you think that aang acted like he was entitled to kataraâs affection? sorry for the bother if this is a question youâve gotten before, iâm just curious about your thoughts
Hi anon! Itâs always lovely to hear people like my metas đ And youâre in luck - I have not gotten this specific question before, though I have answered similar questions, and as such I will probably link those posts throughout.
Forewarning: I use the general you very liberally in this post, so like. Itâs not directed at you, anon djhskdjsajs I donât want you think my sarcasm is in response to your ask (your ask was very lovely!! đ)
Okay. Letâs get started! The funniest thing about the (nonsensical) claim that Aang acted âentitledâ to Kataraâs affection is that there is no canon evidence to support it. Opponents more often than not can only bring up one (1) episode as an example of supposed âentitlementâ because no other Kataang interactions in the series demonstrate entitlement from either end! Like, wow. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel. And Iâm sure we all know what episode opponents love to propagate, donât we?
Yep, you guessed it: âThe Ember Island Players.â
From the get-go, the fact that people who vigorously oppose Kataang essentially only appeal to the contents of one episode for Aangâs supposed âentitlementâ is a major indicator that, in fact, the entitlement is not truly there, and that those opponents are actually misconstruing the entire episode. I mean, if you are trying to make an argument about something but you only have one piece of âevidenceâ to support your claim, then a) any half-decent teacher/professor would fail you, rip and b) thatâs a sign that maybe your claim doesnât hold water. If you canât find evidence to support it, then youâre probably looking at your case from the wrong angle. Analysis 101.
As such, I find the âentitlementâ claim particularly ridiculous because opponents repeat the same faulty rhetoric over and over! The only people that might be convinced are those with confirmation bias. Iâm sure thatâs their audience, of course, but itâs still hilarious dfjaksdasks.
Anyways. Hereâs the excerpt from the EIP transcript that opponents l o v e to spotlight with their âentitlementâ claims:
Aang: Katara, did you really mean what you said in there?
Katara: In where? What are you talking about?
Aang: On stage, when you said I was just like a⊠brother to you, and you didnât have feelings for me.
Katara: I didnât say that. An actor said that.
Aang: But itâs true, isnât it? We kissed at the Invasion, and I thought we were gonna be together. But weâre not.
Katara: Aang, I donât know.
Aang: Why donât you know?
Katara: Because, weâre in the middle of a war, and we have other things to worry about. This isnât the right time.
Aang: Well, when is the right time?
Katara: Aang, Iâm sorry, but right now Iâm just a little confused.
Aang tries to kiss Katara.
Katara: I just said I was confused! Iâm going inside. [Exits the balcony.]
Aang: Ugh, Iâm such an idiot! [Puts down his head on the balcony railing.]
Opponents claim Aangâs behavior is âentitledâ here for two reasons:
1) He asks Katara several questions about their relationship status.
2) He kisses her.
Before I get too far into this, we have to consider the context of the episode. Katara and Aang have this conversation after just watching 95% of âThe Boy in the Iceberg,â aka Fire Nation propaganda. I have talked about the specifics of the play being imperialist propaganda here, but the gist of it is that this play is meant to demean the Gaang, to portray them as lesser and weaker than the Fire Nation. The fact that the play ends with Ozaiâs victory is a stark reminder of this mentality. So: Katara and Aang have just watched this play that preys upon their insecurities and paints them as awful caricatures of their true selves. It is only natural that they would be more tense than usual. The reason I bring this up is solely to inform their conversation on the balcony, however; I donât think their frustration solely defines what they say/do, but itâs worth keeping in mind, âHey, theyâre stressed and upset, of course this conversation might not go perfectly.â
Now, I have talked about the infamous EIP kiss before and approached all the rhetoric surrounding it like Snopes Fact Checker in this post, lmao. I did discuss in there why the kiss is wrong, which no one has ever argued against, but also why the kiss is simply a mistake: not sexual assault, not entitlement, not an unforgivable decision. Iâve copied and pasted specifically my notes on the âentitlementâ claim below regarding the kiss, but if you have time, I definitely recommend the whole post jksdhjasdka (Iâm quite proud of it). Anyways! Hereâs the excerpt:
Claim: Aang acted entitled to Katara and her affection.
Status: False.
Iâve briefly addressed this already, but Aang backing off when Katara pushed him away is the exact opposite of entitlement. An impromptu kiss is not always indicative of entitlement. It can be, especially if the person being kissed has never expressed any interest in the person kissing them, but Katara and Aang were mutually interested in each other. Theyâd mutually kissed twice already by that point: in CoTL and during DoBS. The EIP kiss was inappropriate. NO ONE HAS EVER SUGGESTED OTHERWISE. But when youâre 12 and youâre already kind of in this semi-relationship with a girl youâve been through hell and high water with (who has kissed you twice on the lips and on the cheek multiple times, not to mention it is only you she ever expresses such affection towards), it is not fucking âentitlementâ to make a move on her, even when the timing is off. ITâS JUST A MISTAKE. A POOR DECISION. NOT ENTITLEMENT. NOT MANIPULATION. NOT SEXUAL ASSAULT. Full stop.
Also, these EIP people love to call Aang entitled for this kiss, but there isnât a single peep heard from them about Zukoâs line in TSR where he demands to know whatâs âwrongâ with Katara, since she hasnât forgiven him yet when everyone else has. And look. I think Zuko was just frustrated here, and that he, too, made a mistake and is obviously not irredeemable for it, but. If youâre going to argue that Aang was entitled in EIP, youâd better be ready to acknowledge the argument that Zuko was acting entitled in TSR, too. And hell, letâs take it a step further! Call Aang entitled for EIP. Call Zuko entitled for TSR. Call Sokka entitled for choosing to stay at Boiling Rock on the off chance his father would arrive, thus making Suki and Zuko feel obligated to stay behind with him, effectively putting all of them in danger. What an entitled decision, risking his friendsâ lives on the 0.01% chance Hakoda would be one of the many, many possible war prisoners arriving at Boiling Rock!
Damn. That sounds ridiculous as fuck, doesnât it?
And guess what. Thatâs exactly how the âAang was entitledâ arguments come across. Hate to break it to you. Trust me when I say to do yourself a favor and stop perpetuating that faulty rhetoric!
So that is what I have already assessed, lol.
To be frank, the most frustrating thing I see perpetuated is that the EIP kiss somehow ruined Aang and Kataraâs relationship. But when it comes to assessing weighty issues like the notion of âentitlementâ in a relationship, the fact of the matter is that you have to look at both the relationship as a whole and the context in which it is situated. Opponents never want to do that, because doing so debunks their entire (baseless) argument, lmao. Katara and Aang are best friends. And by EIP, they have both expressed romantic interest in each other multiple times. (Here is a post explaining the development of Kataraâs feelings for Aang, just to put out that fire before anyone sets it lmao.)
So why, why do opponents think Katara would never find it in herself to forgive Aang for a mistaken kiss? Katara is shown over and over again throughout the series to have one of the biggest hearts. She wants to see the good in people. Thatâs why she gives Jet a second chance (even though a person could argue he did not âdeserveâ one); thatâs why she helps the Fire Nation village in âThe Painted Ladyâ; thatâs why she forgives Pakku (once she sees heâs willing to change); thatâs why she is the second person in the entire show (excluding Iroh) to offer Zuko a hand of kindness (in CoD)! Thatâs why she eventually forgives Zuko, even after all he has done to the Gaang (e.g. sending an assassin after them, being complicit in Aangâs death, attacking her and kidnapping Aang at the NWT, manipulating her with her motherâs necklace, to name a few, lmao. bless his heart, but like Jet, someone could easily argue Zuko doesnât âdeserveâ another chance - and yet Katara still gave him [and Jet] one. in fact, she gave Zuko multiple).
In other words, Katara is almost always willing to extend friendship and compassion and forgiveness to others - why would she revoke that privilege from Aang after a single error that is comparatively lesser to all the other horrible things sheâs experienced in the war? Again, Iâm not downplaying how terrible of a decision Aang made. Itâs inexcusable. But itâs not the end of the world, and considering the context of the show (e.g. Aang and Katara liked each other and they both knew it), itâs⊠not some heinous crime. Compared to, oh, how about attempted murder? lmaoo
Even beyond Kataraâs innate kindness, Aang is Kataraâs best friend. She loves him. The show portrays it as romantic through the seasons, but even if someone isnât into shipping (which is super valid), Katara and Aangâs connection is one of the primary lynchpins of the show! (The other being Aang and Zuko, the greatest foils of all time.) Katara and Aang epitomize several of A:TLAâs thematics (and aesthetics) because they are complementary: yin and yang, push and pull, Tui and La, moon and ocean, blue and orange, water and air. This gifset and related commentary beautifully demonstrate how even when Katara and Aang disagree, they respect the otherâs the decision. So after 60~ episodes depicting Aang and Katara as having mutual respect and love for each other in every form as well as emphasizing Kataraâs natural inclination towards kindness/giving people the benefit of the doubt, opponents still think Katara wouldnât forgive Aang because of one mistimed, inappropriate kiss? What?? Make it make sense, lmao.
In sum, the kiss was a mistake, not an act of entitlement, and itâs absurd to think Katara would hold that against Aang for the rest of his life.
To backtrack a bit, opponents also love to use the fact that Aang asked Katara several questions about their relationship status as examples of his âentitlement.â Just typing that out highlights the ridiculous nature of this assertion, lmao! Let me rephrase it for maximum hilarity:
âAang was unsure about where their relationship stood? Well, how dare he ask numerous questions to resolve his confusion!â
Like, what was the alternative jskfajksdas if you are in relationship limbo with someone, it is far better to ask them âtoo manyâ questions for clarification than to simply assume one way or the other! Kissing Katara was wrong, flat-out, but asking her questions to better understand where they were in their relationship was like. exactly the right decision, lmao. I genuinely donât see how that could be indicative of entitlement? Especially because, once again, Aang and Katara both like each other and they both know that by this point in the show. Thatâs why Aang doesnât ask if Katara likes him - he knows she does. Thatâs why Katara doesnât negate her feelings - she knows sheâs interested in him, and the blockade between them is not a lack of reciprocation, but the fact that theyâre ïżœïżœïżœin the middle of a warâ and consequently itâs not âthe right timeâ for them to begin a relationship. Katara has seen Aang die before! She knows heâs facing a near-impossible victory! I canât blame her for not wanting to start a relationship with him at that point. It would hurt twice as much to lose him again if they were together in a romantic fashion (amatonormativity, am I right?). Again, Aangâs kiss was entirely inappropriate, but him asking her questions about their relationship is a) an example of fostering healthy communication and b) what any therapist would encourage, lol.
Oh, but Iâm âforgettingâ something, arenât I? Right. This line:
Katara: Aang, Iâm sorry, but right now Iâm just a little confused.
If we want to talk about parallels, which I know the A:TLA fandom adores, this line sounds suspiciously like:
Yue: ⊠but I like you [Sokka] too much and itâs too confusing to be around you.
Yue and Katara are actually in similar situations here. Outside forces are interfering with their relationships; for Yue, there is her arranged marriage, and for Katara, itâs the life-or-death nature of the war itself. They arenât confused about their feelings, as Yue knows she likes Sokka and Katara knows she likes Aang, but they are confused about how to reconcile those feelings with their external circumstances. And can you blame them for that? They are facing impossible decisions (the fate of their nation and the fate of the world respectively). I would be confused, too! So Kataraâs response isnât a reaction to any so-called âentitlementâ from Aang; she is experiencing genuine confusion about how to approach her own feelings for him in the midst of a war.
In sum, Aang asking questions about their relationship was a logical step to take resolving his confusion and is in no way related to âentitlement.â Kataraâs confusion was not âletting Aang down easyâ and interpreting it as such requires disregarding every preceding line of the conversation and its context.
As you can see, Aangâs actions in EIP are not at all âentitled.â His questions were understandable. While his kiss was inappropriate and inexcusable, it was also a mistake, and there is no canon evidence to support the conclusion Katara would never be able to forgive him (her literal best friend!) for it.
Before I end, Iâll touch briefly upon the DotBS kiss, because it is also occasionally used as an example of Aangâs âentitlementâ towards Kataraâs feelings. Whether you like the trope or not, this moment falls under what is called the âNow or Never Kiss.â TV Tropes actually lists Kataang/DotBS as an example under the Western Animation tab:
âAvatar: The Last Airbender: The fact that heâs finally going to face the dreaded Firelord, and possibility that he might not come back alive from that battle, gives Aang enough motivation to kiss Katara.â
Again, whether you like the trope or not, it involves reciprocation from both parties:
âThe Not-A-Couple [i.e. both parties] donât want to go out without revealing how they [i.e. both parties] really feel. Itâs now or never. They kiss.â
Katara and Aang both like each other. When Aang initiates the DotBS kiss, Katara kisses him back. Her lips are still puckered when he pulls away. Furthermore, Katara had initiated a kiss with Aang prior to this incident, in CoTL. Katara was also the one to initiate every cheek kiss with Aang (who is the only character she ever demonstrated such affection towards). So Aang kissing Katara during DotBS follows an established precedent of Katara initiating different kisses, romantically inclined, with Aang. Itâs not entitlement; itâs him knowing they mutually like each other and him realizing this might be the last time he ever sees her. Again, you can hate the trope, but donât blatantly misconstrue its meaning. Youâll sound like Fire Nation propaganda, lmao. (For clarification, jic: the general you. not anon!)
Here is a fantastic post by @imreallyhereforkataang explaining the DotBS kiss in more detail as well as discussing why Kataangâs progression in the second half of Book 3 was, in fact, well-developed, and how Katara and Aang are best friends above all else and know that (which was the core of their relationship from the start).
And a bonus fun fact: in the original storyboard (link takes you to storyboarder Giancarlo Volpeâs DeviantArt with said storyboard), it is noted that Katara smiles after Aang kisses her. Why? Because she likes him as much as he likes her! It was changed by a âhigher authority,â according to Volpe, probably to add more realism to the romance (i.e. Katara likes Aang, yes, but as she herself points out in EIP - thereâs a war going on, and love is always terrifying to reconcile with war).
(Seriously, though, do read Volpeâs description on the storyboard. Takes you a second to scroll down and maybe a minute to read. Short yet informative, discussing how you can see on the storyboard itself that someone revised the image so Katara isnât smiling after the kiss.)
Anyways! Opponentsâ argument that Katara wasnât interested in Aang therefore is and has always been entirely inapplicable.
To conclude: the entitlement assertion is laughable. There is no canon evidence to support it. As such, I encourage you to laugh whenever you see it! Pull an Azula, for that matter:
[ID: Gif from âThe Beachâ episode of A:TLA. Ty Lee, mimicking a guy, asks Azula, âHey there sweet sugar cakes. How ya likinâ this party?â Azula proceeds to burst into exaggerated laughter, earning stares from everyone else at the party. End ID.]
Thank you for the great ask, anon! Hopefully my response was satisfactory đ
