Happy Birthday Scottish actor Alex Norton, born January 27th 1950.

Norton was born in Glasgow and spent his childhood in Moffat Street in the Gorbals , by plumber dad John and mum Sarah before moving to Pollokshaws.

He discovered acting at the age of 14 via an out-of-school drama group. This led to his part in the TV series Dr. Finlay’s Casebook and with it the decision that acting was what he wanted to concentrate on. Because of his background and his father’s lack of approval of his chosen career, Alex decided to avoid the traditional route into acting and instead worked from part to part.

In 1973 he became one of the founder members of the 7:84 company, touring Scotland with The Cheviot, the Stag, and the Black Black Oil. In the 1970s he met his wife, Sally Kinghorn on the set of a BBC Schools series. They were married in 2001 and have 3 sons, Jamie, Rory and Jock.

Alex has appeared in numerous films including Bill Forsyth’s Gregory’s Girl , Local Hero and Comfort and Joy, A Sense of Freedom, Scandal and Orphans, as well as Hollywood blockbusters such as Patriot Games, Braveheart and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Norton also voiced Thurston McCondry in the animated shorts Haunted Hogmanay and Glendogie Bogey.

Of course it is his role as DCI Matt Burke in Taggart we know him best for in Scotland but he had previously appeared in the same series as murder suspect George Bryce in the episode Knife Edge in 1986.

He was the subject of This Is Your Life in 2003 when he was surprised by Michael Aspel.

From August to September 2012 he played the role of Gerard Findlay in Waterloo Road, a headteacher from rival school Havelock High School.

March 2014 saw him playing Cameron Watts in the Scottish  crime drama series Shetland, the same year Norton appeared in the documentary I Belong To Glasgow, a BBC Scotland Production in which he guest starred alongside Karen Dunbar.

As well as his acting Alex directed the first production of Tony Roper’s The Steamie, as well as directing Glasgow’s King’s Theatre’s pantomimes for a five-year period.

He has also done voice over work on the video game Medieval Total War II as the voice of some of the Scottish characters in the game, along with voicing Gaunter O'Dimm in Hearts of Stone, an expansion pack for the video game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Norton also appeared on The Weakest Link TV Drama Characters Edition. He was the first one voted off.  

More recently in 2019 Alex was in the drama Hatton Garden about the famous heist in London, 2015 and is in the BBC Sitcom Two Doors Down, which is due back on our screens this coming year with a six episode run.

Alex admits he considered retiring during the height of the coronavirus pandemic last year but working on the Christmas Special of Two Doors Down changed his mind as he was still enjoying acting so much, in an interview he said;

“As long as I can still manage to stand up without bumping into the furniture and can still remember my lines, then I reckon there is always going to be work available.  And pretty much anything I earn these days is spent on air tickets as my wife Sally and I have been great travellers all our lives together. So if they continue to knock on my door, then why say no? “I’ve no plans to hang up the cloak and the big actor’s hat – just yet.”

The couple spent most of the first year of the pandemic in their home in France, and he says: “We were able to get there because they opened up an air corridor in the summer, but by the time we came back it had closed, so we had to self-isolate for two weeks.“ 

Norton has also found time to write his autobiography, There’s been a life, was published in 2014.

Recently he has teamed up with the Glasgow Evening Times to bring their  Glasgow crime podcast to life and was in the Christmas special of Two Doors Down.  Fansd of Good Omens will be pleased to hear  the cameras continue to roll on Season 2 and Alex will be making a guest appearance, the series is being filmed in Edinburgh.

Norton, who lives mainly in his French home, said recently  he would return to live in Scotland if the country ­became independent, and that he hates the Conservative Party who ­delivered Brexit and took the UK out of the European Union. Alex said: “If independence is a good thing for Scotland, I’m all for it – if it makes Scotland a better place. I would be pro-independence to get away from this toxic Tory Government. I loathe them like I’ve never loathed another political party. ‘Johnson’s Peppa Pig party’?  I detest them. The idea of getting shot of them is a good thing.“Also if Scotland became independent, it could maybe rejoin the EU. The biggest mistake this country has made is leaving the EU. Terrible and we’re all paying the price for that now.
