Sappho fresco from Pompeii
Tondo of Woman with wax tablets and stylus (so-called "Sappho"), National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Roman fresco from Pompeii (VI, Insula Occidentalis) - Discovered in 1760, is one of the most famous and beloved paintings, commonly called Sappho. Actually portrays a high-society Pompeian woman, richly dressed with gold-threaded hair and large gold earrings, bringing the stylus to the mouth and holding the wax tablets, notoriously accounting documents which therefore have nothing to do with poetry and even less with the famous Greek writer.

I’m tryna figure out an aesthetic that works because I love (dark) academia and literature and Latin and classics, but I also love programming and technology and Linux and tech in general.
Like the vibe I’m going for is: oh my god why did you write your code draft on a fucking wax tablet you madman

[image description: a cropped screenshot of the Hive from Hollow Knight. It shows a tall, hexagonal frame with multiple shelves in it. On the shelves are golden blocks of varying heights with markings on them. In the top left corner are five icons: a mask shard, essence, Vengeful Spirit, and two grubs. The bottom left corner shows part of Skurry’s chat; ren122333 says “All roads lead to hive!” and King_Quag says, in all caps, “It’s all bees Skurry!!” end image description]
back on my bullshit
what... is this? those look like tablets? like some sort of storage cell. surely it’s not like, honey storage or something, especially since they’re all different heights and the shelves are apparently really deep.
we don’t get a lot of information about the hive (and tbh it feels a tad slapdashed into the game sometimes), which means i can say anything and it may well be canon. it’d be cool if the hive had its own archival system though, because it seriously looks like it’s some sort of archive. i don’t know what it would be archiving; i kind of doubt it’d be about hallownest, since the hive doesn’t seem particularly affiliated with it, so maybe its own history? idk just,,, the hive as an archive. think about it

I always thought everyone telling him to stick to prose was rather uncharitable but as it turns out this is indeed not very good. endearing though........

what DOES it mean that the tablet in natm allows for the souls of real historical figures to use their statues as a vessel to see through while also simultaneously bringing to life fictional figures that were never "real" or alive to begin with? what does this imply about fictional and historical figures whose mythos and ongoing legacy have similar cultural/societal impacts? what would it matter, then, if a figure was real or not real. a story is true a story is untrue as time goes on it matte–
I was halfway through reading this ask when I saw the Black Sails icon and was like "ah this person knew my exact train of thought"
