REAL GAME OF LIFE RULES:
Starting Position(ality):
Players:
Upper-class White woman = UW = Blue circle
Upper-class Black woman = BW = Blue triangle
Upper-class Immigrant woman = UI = Blue diamond
Lower-class White woman = LW = Grey circle
Lower-class Black woman = LB = Grey triangle
Lower-class Refugee woman = LR = Grey diamond
Starting Points:
Lower-class White woman (LW) starts at the beginning.
1st spot:
Upper-class Black woman (UB) and upper class immigrant woman (UI) are allowed to jump ahead one space, due to economic privilege.
3rd Spot:
Combined positionality of economic privilege and race allows the upper-class White woman (UW) to start 3 spaces ahead of the starting point.
Lower class Black woman (LB) and lower class refugee woman (LR) skip their first turn, and start at the starting point
Game Stops:
Each stop on the board game is accompanied by a game rule and description. Some do not have a specific rule, and must simply be passed through, others require the player to roll a die to get a certain value to move on. To move through other spots, players roll the die, and move through the number of spaces that they land on. For example, rolling a 2 would have the player move two spaces forward. The die is meant to represent the challenges that women must face at each level of the criminal justice system. It represents agency that they have to better their circumstances, however this agency is limited in many ways depending on their positionality. Being tasked to roll a 7 in the game is impossible, and reflects the limits imposed on women’s agency, and ways in which they are set up for failure. These ways include barriers to  employment or regaining custody of their children after being released from prison.
Police Called for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV):
Description:
The police are called to respond to an incident of Intimate Partner Violence, which occurred after a long pattern of abuse. Women are often hopeful that involving the state will improve their circumstances. However it often does the opposite for certain marginalized and racialized groups. Involving the CJS has been described as “calling missiles” and is very destructive to women’s lives and family (Makin 2003).
Game Rule:
-All players must pass through this stop.
Zero-Tolerance Policy in State Housing:
Description:
With the rise of neoliberalism, state housing has contributed to the buildup of the prison nation through zero tolerance policies for state housing. This leads to criminalizing the victim of IPV by evicting both parties from state housing and pushing them out on the street due to their lack of financial resources (Richie 2012: 184-185).
Game Rule:
LW, LB, LR live in public housing, however are evicted following the arrival of the police, due to Zero Tolerance Laws in government funded housing. Miss 2 turns.
UW, WB, UR do not live in state housing, and may proceed without interruption.
Lawyer:
Description:
Women with access to economic resources are able to pay for a good lawyer, who will spend more time on their case, and take it more seriously because they are being well paid to do so. Other women who cannot afford a lawyer are given legal aid, however these lawyers are not being paid as well, and have less time to work on their case. Therefore women of low socioeconomic status are more likely to not receive as good quality representation, and may receive a harsher sentence.
Game Rule:
Roll the dice to see if you will have access to a good lawyer:
UW: roll 1 or higher
UB: roll 3 or higher
UI: roll 3 or higher
LW: roll 7 or higher —> (impossible, so given legal aid & lower quality representation)
LB: roll 7 or higher —> (impossible, so given legal aid & lower quality representation)
LR: roll 7 or higher —> (impossible, so given legal aid & lower quality representation)
Courts:
Description:
Systemic bias at all levels of the justice system lead to racialized women being given more punitive sentences, because they are not seen as an ‘ideal victim’. Black women are also more likely to fight back, so are often seen as aggressive and deserving of their abuse. Such women who do not conform to this ideal victim criteria are constructed as risky, as part of the neoliberal risk management discourse. This contributes to criminalizing the victim and treating her as an actuarial subject in measuring how much ‘risk’ she may pose to the community (Hannah-Moffat 2013).
Game Rule:
-All players must pass through this stop.
Sentencing:
Description:
UW is seen as the ideal victim and did not try to fight back from her assailant. She had access to a good lawyer who ensured that her rights were protected, a no-contact order was placed between her and her husband which complicates her life, as all contact regarding their life together including childcare must go through their lawyers. Aside from that, she was not given any criminal sanctions. Proceed to the finish.
Game Rule:
UB, UI - Miss a turn, you are not seen as the “ideal victim” in court however your well     paid lawyer was able to keep penalties to minimum
LW - Sentenced to miss 5 turns
LB - Sentenced to miss 10 turns
LR - Roll the die to see if you will be permitted to stay in the country, or be deported:
Roll a 4 or higher to stay in the country and go to prison
Roll a 3 or lower to lose refugee status and be sent back
^(this result = automatic disqualification from the game)
Prison:
Description:
Upon entering prison, women are stripped of all of their rights and dehumanized. They are subject to routinely invasive strip searches, and often sexual abuse by state actors such as Correctional Officers and doctors at the prison (Davis 2003). This abuse has long-lasting effects on the mental and physical wellbeing of these women, and they will experience effects of institutionalization long after their prison sentence is over.
Parole:
Description:
Individuals that leave prison are often put on probation for months or years after serving their time. They must follow many rules and frequently check in with their probation officers. Former prisoners must follow rules such as mobility restrictions, finding a job, housing, curfews etc. Failure to meet any of these conditions will cause them to go back to prison. Some individuals experience parole differently than others. Someone who has high socioeconomic status is more likely to be able to find a job, house, and also be more mobile, while others would have more difficulty accessing these necessities (Kaufman et al. 2018).
Stigma:
Description:
When leaving prison many individuals experience stigmatization from family, friends and society in general. People that are/were incarcerated face stigmatization in many forms. They are constantly reminded of the fact that they were/are prisoners through searching for jobs, finding housing, daily activities etc. (Munn 2012).
Game Rule:
LB, LI, LW miss a turn, you are disadvantaged by the stigma of having a criminal record.
This penalty represents the structural barrier that stigmatizing former prisoners limits their opportunities in social, professional, and housing networks and degrades mental health.
Housing:
Description:
Housing can be difficult for prisoners to attain depending on their parole conditions and their socioeconomic status. Some are not able to afford certain housing, while others are able to live with family members or friends. (Leverentz 2010).
Game Rule:
Roll the dice to see if you will access stable housing upon reentry:
-LB/LR/LW —> roll a 6
^Failure to roll a 6 on the first try will result in being sent back to prison for breaking an administrative offence - Miss another 3 turns
Employment:
Description:
Race and socioeconomic status have an impact on the type of job an individual will get out of prison. The job that the individual gets must meet parole conditions such as mobility restrictions, curfews, boundaries etc. (Pager 2018)
Game Rule:
-LB/LR —> Roll a 6 or higher, failure to do so on the first try will result in being sent back to prison for breaking an administrative offence (miss another 3 turns)
-LW —> roll a 3 or higher on the first try. Failure to do so will result in being sent back to prison for breaking an administrative offence (miss another 3 turns). This is still difficult to do, however lower class white women have an advantage due to their racial positionality, so achieving employment is half as difficult for them than for racialized women.
Childcare:
Description:
Once children go into the Child Welfare system it is extremely difficult to get them out. In some cases, individuals that are more advantaged are able to keep their children in the care of family members or friends. (Gurusami 2018)
Game Rule:
LB/LR —> roll a 6 or higher. Failure to roll a 6 on the first try will result in being sent back to prison for breaking an administrative offence (miss another 3 turns)
-LW —> roll a 4 or higher on the first try. Failure to do so will result in being sent back to prison for breaking an administrative offence (miss another 3 turns). This is still difficult to do, however lower class white women have an advantage due to their positionality as white, so achieving employment is half as difficult for them than for racialized women.
