Unrelated to the new book blurb:

do you have any tips on processing the absolute mess that is the family tree? Like, how does one put it into smaller bites for re-doing/adjusting? How does one even begin to rework it when it's such a confusing tangle?? I'm just so overwhelmed by the tree(s), and I've read the whole series (because I would love to re-work it, but FUCK).

I will be 100% earnest with you; reworking the tree from scratch as a single person is both difficult and time consuming. I have a penchant for it, and even I'm not completely done. I make my reduxed trees totally free to use so that others at least have a jumping-off point for your own "cleaner" Clans.

So my most helpful tip would probably be Don't. PLEASE take my trees and cut them, prune them, bonsai them, clean them up even more than I did, anything you'd like. I do not wish this fate on my worst enemy.

That said-- let's say you love pain as much as I do, or you just want to see how much work I put into these trees. I'll babble about my process.

This is my WIP file for the ShadowClan Family Tree. Consider this image a content warning for self-inflicted pain and suffering 💕

Uhhh and also; an ACTUAL, serious content warning. Because of the nature of them asking how to fix trees on their own, I have to talk a little about incest. It comes with the territory.

A few things to know before you start;

You will need a FUCK OFF MASSIVE monitor for this. Mine is an ASUS a little under 2 feet long-- I've tried doing this on my smaller, secondary monitor, and these trees just get too big to work on.

FamilyEcho will not cut it. You NEED an art program. You will have to do this by hand, because there is no lineage-drawing tool that can handle families this large and tangled.

You will need to decide your "rules" beforehand. How closely related are you allowing valid couples to be? Are you allowing Queen's Rights? Can you add OCs, and if so, how often? On this point-- I have my Three Strict Rules, and do not use OCs. Because of this, I do a LOT of research beforehand and usually have the wiki open as I work on these. I'm always scouring for forgotten warriors to use for this.

There are going to be multiple drafts. You will not do this in one go. That does not mean you "failed" or you're "stuck," that's a good thing.

With all of that out of the way.

Usually, the first thing I do is pick a Clan to work on. There's over 1,000 cats in this series, so I break that up by picking one group at a time. Once I do that, I draw out the canon chart.

In this case, I've already drawn out all of the canon charts. River, Thunder, Shadow, Sky, Wind.

I call this a Diagnosis because I'm taking a look at what the problem is, so that I know what I'm fixing. In Shadow's case, it's a solid brick of inbreeding with a "missing generation" line. In ThunderClan's case, it's mostly a Robinwing x Fuzzypelt problem. Each Clan has its own unique issues.

Once you know the issue, step two, start drawing out what you want to do and keep. For example, let's say that you want to use the Ivy/Dove as Holly/Cinder kittens idea.

I generally try to start with the "modern" cats and work backwards, but it can also be helpful to just doodle out floating "branches" that you want to work in backwards.

You can see examples of those in my ShadowClan draft, up there, but I've zoomed in and circled them.

Don't be afraid to draw "notes" like this. You can just grab them and drag them around when something clicks!

Getting back to our "example" tree with Holly/Cinder Ivy/Dove, you might notice now that Lionblaze has no mate. Another thing I do when I see an immediate problem but don't have a solution in mind yet is use a little ? mark. You don't want to get hung up on deciding everything RIGHT away.

Now, this is where my 3 Strict Rules would come into play, in two ways! I'm sure you'll be able to spot them. For one, Lionblaze has waaaaay too many kids here who would go on to have kittens of their own, so I'd start breaking them up. For two, this tree makes Ivypool and Fernsong a first cousin pairing, something I don't allow.

You can fix this in any number of ways, and I'm sure there's someone out there shouting their preferred Lionblaze ships and Alt Fernsong Parents like they're the crowd on a game show, but for this demonstration I'm going to do this;

Here, I decided I didn't want to undo FernIvy, but I still want Fernsong to be Clanborn with two parents, so I have removed him from Lionblaze and given him unknown family. I've also taken Sorrelstripe and Spotfur, and moved them to a little spot on the side. I can now use them to patch up the little ? placeholders.

You'll also notice this is already becoming a mess. This is why you will need to redraw this a few times, for readability. The best tip I can give you for that is that families who only have one kit to carry on the lineage should go in a long line in the center, but otherwise, offspring who do not have kits should go between their siblings who do.

It's easier to visualize it imo, so here's what I mean;

The vast majority of the time I spend doing these is just "puzzlework." Trying to figure out a way to make line connections look good, making sure cats are far enough apart, trying to make "wishlist" stuff work.

And, mind you, this is Draft 3 of this tree. Those grayed-out parts of the first image were my first two. I wasn't satisfied enough with them, so I started from scratch several times!

I wish I could share some kind of good, simple process for this, but unfortunately I don't have one. It's just a lot of work, familiarity, creativity, and problem solving. I spend days, sometimes even weeks on these. My intention is that they can be a fandom resource that's easier to read than the website tree, less carelessly inbred with more thought given to immediate family units, AND more comprehensive.

In any case, I hope this was insightful, or these tips I share helped in some way!

Name Changes:

- Robinwing → Robinheart. There are way too many characters with the name Robinwing, I NEEDED to change her name.

- That's it. I didn't feel the need to change any of the other names.

Other Changes:

- I changed Robinheart's appearance. I don't think I've done that this drastically, but Robinheart inspired me. I made her look more like a European Robin (specifically this one ↓)

- Fuzzypelt is no longer Brindleface's father in this. I still would want him to be Dustpelt and Ravenpaw'd father, but I don't want him to be Brindle's. Btw Frostfur is still Brindleface's sister I just didn't show her here.

- I changed Darkstripe's eye color to blue because shut up I wanted to get off my a** (His eyes do look an awful lot like Ashfur's, don't they?)

- Snowkit lives! I really really REALLY hate Fern×Dust for....reasons that would be obvious to anyone who read the first Arc. Anyway. In this Au Cinderpelt saved him from the Hawk. Brackenfur was his mentor! He became a warrior at a similar time as Brambleclaw (since they're close in age iirc). Him & Ferncloud were pretty close during their apprenticeship, having a lot in common (mostly their love of cute kittens and their soft hearted natures). That's all I've got for them, though!

- Larchkit and Hollykit did, in fact, exist I just didn't want to show them to not make the tree too long.

- Birchfall is no longer one of Ferncloud's kits. Unfortunately since I leaned into Cloudtail being Brindleface's adopted son, I really didn't want Whitewing to be related to Birchfall (via adoption one Gen earlier). I have no excuses for Foxleap though, he still exists I guess but not related to Ferncloud. Though maybe she could've adopted him when he was an apprentice? Idk.

- Addition to the above point. I made that decision real last minute after I designed Birchfall. He was supposed to look like Ashfur, but then I realized that if I added Cloudtail to this tree than he'd be related to Whitewing via adoption. He looks like Ashfur as a complete coincidence now ✌️.

- Shrewpaw shares similarities in appearance to his grandmother, Robinheart. It's just cute and that's mostly why I added her in the first place.

You have no idea how hard it was to make the 4 white cats in this look different (another reason I didn't add Frostfur...). Icecloud looking like Snowfall was on purpose obviously, but she has some Ferncloud features as well (curled in fur and inner ear fur (idk what to call it)). Whitewing has a similar fur shape & eye color as her Mama, but has the same fur colors as her Papa.

I don't know why but I'm partial to Frostfur x Redtail having Brackenfur and Cinderpelt and Lionheart x Rosetail having Thornclaw and Brightheart when I feel like splitting the litter into two. Sleek and important queen Frostfur being mates with the important deputy Redtail. Big and fluffy Rosetail finally getting the fluffy mate and family she always wanted, until both her and Lionheart are tragically killed in the same battle, defending their kits in the nursery. And then Frostfur is left all alone, taking in and raising all four kits as best as she can. It's no wonder she wanted to stay in the old forest when the clans left for the lake territories.

Palebird Rewritten Family Tree! My First Windclan Family tree rewrite! Windclan was surprisingly easy for me. Now on to the Notes:

Tallpoppy and Applefur of Shadowclan and Tawnyfur of Windclan are the kids of Rabbitear. Tallpoppy and Applefur were stolen during into the wild when windclan was being chased out by shadowclan.

Rabbitear died in the battle and Tawnyfur was nursed/raised by Ashfoot and Morningflower, Gorsekit, Tawnykit and Eaglekit were inseparable.

Wrenflight is Onewhiskers mother because I find considering the Windclan leader problems in TNP.

Firestar's Family Tree by Arc 7! (This may change)

Needless to say, Firestar's kittypet gene of Big Litters carried over. That and Clan culture really likes naming after dead people.

The color coding for the clans is based off what they are currently in or were in during their death, not birth clan.

Changes to canon under the cut, and some explanations:

Relation Changes: -Breezepelt is part of Lion, Jay, and Holly's litter, alongside his no-longer-dead littermates, Raven and Bracken. -Dovewing and Ivypool are now Hollyleaf's kits, as Cloudtail's side of the family do not count as Firekin in Starclan's eyes (Fireheart gave up family rights to Brindleface) -Dewnose now has Myrtlebloom and Bayshine without a recognised mother, for bloodline's sake -Dustpelt and Sandstorm are now siblings, and Redtail & Runningwind are their dads -Cloudspeckle is now the adoptive mother of Redtail and Spottedcloud -Rainstorm and Mintfur are actually Rainwhisker's, but are raised by Reedwhisker -Spiderleg and Shrewfeather are Ferncloud's only kits, who she had without a disclosed father

--Hey look! It's Graveldusk! Remember him? Yeah, his brother was killed for being an abusive jackass. Hound knew that his brother, Gravel, would step up and raise the kits, Puddlekit and Deepkit, as his own (which he did).

--Puddle died in the same flood that occurred in Gorsedaisy's Nightmare. Hollow had just turned six moons old at the time, and has a fear of water because of it. He never felt right in the Clan after that, and left it for Shadowclan along with his uncle. There, his uncle (who yes, hates his name because of that damn flood that killed his sister) met Crowbark and had kits with her.

Deep did step up and help Hollow after his mom died, but didn't officially adopt him, was only a guiding presence for him.

Alright I have completed the Thunder Clan family tree! though I am open to suggestions for changes! also tell me if I missed any cats!

Reminder! this tree is meant to lessen the amount of inbreeding in WC while changing as little as possible!

The quickest, simplest change to fix most of Thunderclan's cousin problem: make Brackenfur-Cinderpelt and Brightheart-Thornclaw not littermates

I've seen this elsewhere before and I love it; have one of the sets of two not be Frostfur's kits but instead fostered by her. Most often I like to give Brightheart and Thornclaw to her as her birth litter because they are described as her kits and looking like her the most, and then I make Brackenfur and Cinderpelt Rosetail's kits. She died defending the nursery after all, and Frostfur could have taken over their care after. This also explains away why they were apprenticed at different times as well. It's so easy to take in as canon that I don't think nearly any text contradicts it.

And just like that Lilyheart and Snowbush aren't first cousins. Ivypool and Fernsong aren't related through Brightheart and Brackenfur, and neither are Sorrelstripe and Dewnose. (Although Bristlefrost and Stemleaf is still weird. Bristle is 4 generations away from Frostfur yet Frostfur is Stem's grandma because, old man Thornclaw needed kits I guess)

The FrostFour and WhiteWillow family tree rewrite!

Only one thing really changed with the frostfour is now I added Snowkit, but now he dies much younger from natural causes and half his “story” goes to Mistlekit and the other half goes to Cloudtail.

Mistlekit is now apart of Tawny and Brambles litter and gets taken by the hawk trying to protect their litter mates. Cloudtail is now deaf and with the help of Dappletail, Fireheart and Brindleface they make new ways for Cloudpaw to hunt and fight, I don’t want to ramble too much because I’m gonna make posts for characters some time in the future.

Ok on to the WhiteWillow family, Graystripe and Darkstripe have the same father, Graystripe stays in Riverclan and doesn’t have kits with Millie but him and Mosspelt are besties and he ends being the sire for Willowshine.

SorrelBracken has less grandkits, Lilyheart has no kids and CinderLion only have two daughters Hollytuft and Honeysnap, who is a combination of Honeyfur and Snaptooth.

Molepaw has been renamed Sootpaw after his uncle and also Sorreltail has a history of twins in her family so Cinderheart and Molepaw are twins.

- Feathertail is renamed Featherstream, after her mother. Featherstream asked for it to honor her mother she never got to know.

- Stormfur's name is the same, though it's explicitly supposed to be a reference to Stonefur.

- Bumblestripe's name doesn't change, however he was named after Graystripe. Is that canon? I don't remember.

- Shellfur is renamed Shellspots. He has shell shaped spots on his body (most prominently on his face).

- Eagleclaw is not only named after Thornclaw, but also supposed to envoke an eagle's talons, because in this Au Eagleclaw is one of Thunderclan's best fighters!

- Plumstone has a split face and heterochromia, like that of Moonpaw. Just bc I wanted to tbh. She's not a chimera, unfortunately she's just regular LOL.

Stormfur is the oldest, Featherstream is the youngest. However she is bigger than Stormfur bc she got those big Graystripe genes!

Briarlight → Blossomfall → Bumblestripe. NGL I just thought it would be funny if Bumblestripe was the youngest <3.

Stemleaf → Plumstone → Shellspots → Eagleclaw. Stemleaf acts like your typical oldest brother, as he would be protective of his siblings (especially Shellspots since he's the smallest). He's also the heart, so when he died the siblings were never the same & kinda broke apart.

In this Au, Blossomfall and Thornclaw aren't mates, though everyone thinks they are. Thornclaw was just a surrogate father. Blossomfall is a lesbian in this, but still wanted kits of her own (though she never thought she would have FOUR!) Daisy had to babysit these four musketeers a lot when both Blossomfall & Thornclaw were busy or just wanted a break. Thornclaw still "co-parents" the kids, but more so to cover up the fact Blossomfall and him aren't actually mates. Let's just say, they're in a Lavender Marriage. As I said, Blossomfall is a Lesbian, and Thornclaw is AroAce :3.
