Planning on joining this fundraiser run by @ficsforgaza and help make everyone happy with some content in the process. Here is my plan of action for my wip and donation costs.

Daily Word Count

Allllllright! So first off, eagle-eyed followers will notice I have a “days-per-chapter” counter now. That’s...actually always been there, but I’ve been mostly keeping it to myself. But hey, why not show that part of my chart off? Also, I realized it was out of date yesterday when I...accidentally posted a picture with all the wrong numbers. -laughs- Also, TSLATS’ current chapter was out of date as well. Fixed that.

Anyway, I’m getting distracted. The “Days/Chapter” counter shows how many days, on average, it takes me to upload a chapter of that particular story. And as you can see, comparing the out-of-date DPC to the current DPC, I’ve been trying to even those numbers out a little. (OAW, as always, is impossible to quantify because I’ve done so many drafts of that story I’ve lost count. And before anyone asks, no, it’s NOT worth it, and yes, I’ve decided that this is my last draft before I try to get OAW published no matter what. I’ll only do another round of edits if an agent or publisher tells me I need to. But I digress.)

I think that’s all-- Oh! Never mind, one more thing. The CCs are blue now because I’ve turned them into hyperlinks leading me to my WIPs for my own interest. It’ll just make the process easier if I don’t have to go “where the fuck is my most recent tslats chapter” every time. It slightly changes how my RNG works (previously, the number for each of my stories depended on the order I’d worked on them by most recently opened, now they’re gonna be in order of whichever I last FINISHED a chapter of since I’m going off this list now rather than my folder of wips) but the change is negligible. All I can say is that I’ll probably be more evenly divided between my most neglected stories since RNG seems to, for whatever reason, hate the number 12 (which was the one assigned to whichever story I hadn’t touched in the longest amount of time, so ISTS for ages which is why it’s kind of waited for the rest of my WIPs to catch up). Anyway, I belive that’s actually all I needed to talk about this time. Let’s get all those “Days Since” and “Days/Chapter” numbers down to less than thirty, shall we?

God, if writing that one-shot did anything for me, it’s making me realize I can write so much more than I have been. Like, I thought 3000 was my absolute maximum. The most I could put out. Turns out it’s around twice that? So now I feel dumb and lazy doing absolutely anything less than 2000. My maximum has just become my casual goal. Today was a “lazy day” and I’ve still managed to pull off 3200 by 10:00.

NaNo Prep: Pick a New Daily Word Count Goal

Write 1667 words every day and you can finish a 50k word novel in a month! 

This is the essential premise of NaNoWriMo. And I’m here to say that it is flawed. Slightly flawed. Largely great. But slightly flawed. 

NaNoWriMo gives everyone a daily writing goal of 1667 words, but this assumes you'll be writing every single day. This is simply unrealistic for most participants. 

1667 isn't a magical writing number. It isn’t the mysteriously perfect amount of words to write in a given day. It’s the average number of words you'll be writing throughout the month. That’s all. And that’s not enough to make it a useful daily goal. 

There will almost certainly be days in November when you won't be able to fit writing time into your schedule. Be honest with yourself: are you actually going to write on Thanksgiving? How about on busy Saturday errand days? The day before that big test? 

Instead of panicking when you miss a day, and struggling to write 3000 words the next day, start NaNo by planning a couple of days off before you ever start writing. 

Here are adjusted word count goals: 

29 writing days: 1724 

28 writing days: 1786 

27 writing days: 1852 

26 writing days: 1923 

25 writing days: 2000

Consider your schedule and your needs and adjust your own daily wc goal accordingly. All of these goals are just as do-able as 1667. An extra 100-330 words may be an extra 10 to 20 minutes of writing. 

Even if you can't currently foresee any necessary days off, by writing an extra 250 words per day, you can give yourself four buffer days. In a 30 day month, that can make a real difference. And in all probability, once you've written 1667 words, an additional 250 should be a piece of cake. 

No matter what you do, there will be days you when you write less than your daily goal and days when you write more, but factoring in a few days off can help you avoid an “oh no. I didn’t write this weekend and if I don’t write 5000 words today, I’ll be 3000 words behind and I am so royally screwed” situation.

Be smart. Make good choices. Plan for missed writing days.

MyDumper, MyLoader and My Experience of migrating to AWS RDS

Ref: https://tinyurl.com/yymj43hn How did we migrate large MySQL databases from 3 different DB servers of total size 1TB to a single AWS RDS instance using mydumper? Migration of database involves 3 parts: Dumping the data from the source DBRestoring the data to target DBReplication between source and target DBs Our customer had decided migration from Azure to AWS and as part of that needed to migrate about 35 databases running out of 3 different DB servers to a single RDS instance. RDS currently doesn’t support multi-source replication so we decided that we only set up replication from the largest DB and use dump and restore method for other 2 DB servers during the cutover period.

Setting up RDS Instance

In order to test the application end to end, and during the testing we need to change the data on the DB and that might cause issues in the DB replication process so we decided to set up a separate staging stack for testing purpose alone. Initially, we used native mysql tools like mysqldump, but found that these tools generate a single dump file for the whole database and some of our databases are of a size more than 400GB. We have some of the triggers and views using DEFINER=`root`@`localhost` but RDS doesn’t have root user so we need to either update the DEFINER or remove it according to this documentation. We found it really challenging to update such huge dump files so then upon a suggestion from my friend Bhuvanesh, we decided to try out the mydumper tool. Setting up a server for mydumper We could have run mydumper from the source DB server itself, but we decided to run it in a separate server as it will reduce the load on the source DB server during the dumping and restoration phases. Now let us see how to install mydumper. # Installers: https://github.com/maxbube/mydumper/releases# You may choose to take latest available release here. sudo yum install https://github.com/maxbube/mydumper/releases/download/v0.9.5/mydumper-0.9.5-2.el7.x86_64.rpm# Now we should have both mydumper and myloader commands installed on the serverDumping data from the source MyDumper tool extracts the DB data in parallel and creates separate files from schemas and tables data so it is easy to modify them before restoring them. You will need give at least SELECT and RELOAD permissions to the mydumper user. # Remember to run the following commands in the screen as it is a long running process.# Example1: Following will dump data from only DbName1 and DbName2 time \ mydumper \ --host= \ --user= \ --password= \ --outputdir=/db-dump/mydumper-files/ \ --rows=50000 \ -G -E -R \ --compress \ --build-empty-files \ --threads=16 \ --compress-protocol \ --regex '^(DbName1\.|DbName2\.)' \ -L //mydumper-logs.txt# Example2: Following will dump data from all databases except DbName1 and DbName2 time \ mydumper \ --host= \ --user= \ --password= \ --outputdir=/db-dump/mydumper-files/ \ --rows=50000 \ -G -E -R \ --compress \ --build-empty-files \ --threads=16 \ --compress-protocol \ --regex '^(?!(mysql|test|performance_schema|information_schema|DbName1|DbName2))' \ -L //mydumper-logs.txt Please decide the number of threads based on the CPU cores of the DB server and server load. For more information on various mydumper options, please read this. Also incase you want to use negative filters (Example2) for selecting databases to be dumped then please avoid default database such as (mysql, information_schema, performance_schema and test) It is important to measure the time it takes to take the dump as it can be used to plan the migration for production setup so here I have used thetime command to measure it. Also, please check if there any errors present in the //mydumper-logs.txt before restoring the data to RDS instance. Once the data is extracted from source DB, we need to clean up before loading into RDS. We need to remove the definers from schema files. cd # Check if any schema files are using DEFINER, as files are compressed, we need to use zgrep to search zgrep DEFINER *schema*# Uncompress the schema files find . -name "*schema*" | xargs gunzip # Remove definers using sed find . -name "*schema*" | xargs sed -i -e 's/DEFINER=`*`@`localhost`//g' find . -name "*schema*" | xargs sed -i -e 's/SQL SECURITY DEFINER//g'# Compress again find . -name "*schema*" | xargs gzipRestoring data to RDS instance Now the data is ready to restore, so let us prepare RDS MySQL instance for faster restoration. Create a new parameter group with the following parameters and attach to the RDS instance. transaction-isolation=READ-COMMITTED innodb_log_buffer_size = 256M innodb_log_file_size = 1G innodb_buffer_pool_size = {DBInstanceClassMemory*4/5} innodb_io_capacity = 2000 innodb_io_capacity_max = 3000 innodb_read_io_threads = 8 innodb_write_io_threads = 16 innodb_purge_threads = 2 innodb_buffer_pool_instances = 16 innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 0 max_allowed_packet = 900MB time_zone = Also you can initally restore to a bigger instance to accheive faster restoration and later you can change to the desired the instance type. # Remember to run the following commands in the screen as it is a long running process.time myloader --host= --user= --password= --directory= --queries-per-transaction=50000 --threads=8 --compress-protocol --verbose=3 -e 2> Choose the number of threads according to the number of CPU cores of the RDS instance. Don’t forget to redirect STDERR to file (2>) as it will be useful to track the progress. Monitoring the progress of loader: it is a very long running process so it is very important to check the progress regularly. Schema files get loaded very quickly so we are checking the progress of data files only using the following commands. # Following gives approximate number of data files already restored grep restoring |grep Thread|grep -v schema|wc -l # Following gives total number of data files to be restored ls -l |grep -v schema|wc -l # Following gives information about errors grep -i error Verification of data on RDS against the source DB It is a very important step to make sure that data is restored correctly to target DB. We need to execute the following commands on the source and target DB servers and we should see the same results. # Check the databases show databases;# Check the tables count in each database SELECT table_schema, COUNT(*) as tables_count FROM information_schema.tables group by table_schema;# Check the triggers count in each database select trigger_schema, COUNT(*) as triggers_count from information_schema.triggers group by trigger_schema;# Check the routines count in each database select routine_schema, COUNT(*) as routines_count from information_schema.routines group by routine_schema;# Check the events count in each database select event_schema, COUNT(*) as events_count from information_schema.events group by event_schema;# Check the rows count of all tables from a database. Create the following procedure: # Run the following in both DB servers and compare for each database. call COUNT_ROWS_COUNTS_BY_TABLE('DbName1'); Make sure that all the commands are executed on both source and target DB servers and you should see same results. Once everything is good, take a snapshot before proceeding any further. Change DB parameter group to a new parameter group according to your current source configuration. Replication Now that data is restored let us now setup replication. Before we begin the replication process, we need to make sure that bin-logs are enabled in source DB and time_zone is the same on both servers. We can use the current server should be as staging DB for the end to end application testing and we need to create one more RDS instance from snapshot to set up the replication from source DB and we shouldn’t make any data modifications on this new RDS instance and this should be used as production DB in the applications. # Get bin-log info of source DB from mydumber metadata file cat /metadata# It should show something like below: SHOW MASTER STATUS: Log: mysql-bin-changelog.000856 # This is bin log path Pos: 154 # This is bin log postion# Set external master CALL mysql.rds_set_external_master( '', 3306, '', '', '', , 0);# Start the replication CALL mysql.rds_start_replication;# Check the replication status show slave status \G;# Make sure that there are no replication errors and Seconds_Behind_Master should reduce to 0. Once the replication is completed, please verify the data again and plan for application migration. Make sure that you don’t directly modify the data and on DB server till the writes are completely stop in source DB and applications are now pointing to the target DB server. Also set innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 1 before switching applications as it provides better ACID compliance. Egyre több olyan megjegyzést kapok barátoktól, ismerősöktől, hogy “de jól megy”, “biztos bankot robbantottál” stb., és ha hazaérek biztos vagyok benne, hogy még több ilyen lesz, ezért most lássuk a piszkos anyagiakat. 

1. Idejutás

Na ez tényleg piszkosul drága, ezért nem éri meg rövidebb időre jönni. Ha már ennyi pénz elmegy repülőjegyre, akkor érdemes minimum két hétre maradni. Nekem egy Utazómajmos akcióval Budapesttől Kuala Lumpurig 110 000, busz KL-ből Szingapúrba 3000 Ft, repülő Szingapúrból Balira kb 20 000, és mindkettőben benne van a 20 kg-os csomag.

2. Szállás

Ez attól függ mennyire vannak nagy igényei az embernek, de alapvetően nagyon olcsónak mondanám. Vállalható hostel már van 1500 forinttól, saját szoba homestay-ben kb 2-3000 forinttól , saját VILLA (esetenként medencével, kilátással a rizsföldekre) 5000 Forinttól, nyugatias stílusú hotel 7-10 000 forinttól. Én a saját szobához mindig ragaszkodom, ebből nem engedek,  de egy homestay se sokkal drágább egy hostelnél. Még egy kicsit hozzáteszel és már saját bejáratú villád lehet, ez nagyon olcsó itt és meg is éri, főleg ha barátokkal vagy családdal utazik az ember, de nekem sajnos nem annyira. Ha jobban belegondolunk a hotel se drága, főleg mert 10 000 forintért már 4*-os helyen kapunk szobát, reggelivel, a központban. Otthon ennyi pénzért mikor kapsz ilyen szállást? 

3. Étkezés

Megintcsak attól függ mennyire igényes az ember, avagy hogy mennyire szeretne két napig a wc mellett dekkolni. Hát én nem nagyon, így mindig a kicsit igényesebb helyekre megyek, amik még vállalható árban vannak. Az élelmiszer is nagyon olcsó, és az éttermek is. 500-1000 forintból már jól lehet lakni, de ha hajlandó vagy 2000 forintot kiadni egy étkezés alkalmával, akkor olyan fogást kapsz ami 7 nyelven beszél, és úgy bánnak veled az étteremben, mint a kiskirállyal. 

Az alkoholt nyugodtan el lehet felejteni, annak csillagászati ára van.

4. Közlekedés

Szintén nagyon olcsó. Ha van jogsid és tudsz autót vagy robogót bérelni. Hát nekem nincs, úgyhogy szívás. Az autóról nincsenek pontos infóim, de robogót kb 5 dollár/nap áron lehet bérelni. És az  célszerűbb is, mert autóval közlekedni itt brutál, a szabályok mintha nem léteznének, mindenki megy amerre lát.  Nekem marad a taxi vagy a saját sofőr. Vicces de a taxi drágább, mintha sofőröd van, és ki tudja lehet elvisznek a városban kocsikázni, amit észre se veszel mert itt minden új, aztán odaadja a milliós számlát. A sofőr olcsóbb, Adi jófej, megbízok benne, állítása szerint kedvezményt is ad, de szerintem nem :D Nem baj a lényeg, hogy biztonságban érzem magam. Csak írok egy üzenetet, előre megbeszéljük mikor hova szeretnék menni  és már itt is van. Neki például az egyik városból a másikba való költözéskor (40 km, de 1,5 óra a dugók miatt) 3000 forintot fizettem,  de tegnap amikor Ubudon belül költöztem egyik helyről a másikra az ingyen volt, mert nem engedte, hogy fizessek... hát nem cuki? :D 

5. Programok

Tipik turista dolgok, mint állatkert, elefánt park, búvárkodás, sziget néző túrák, főzőiskola elég változó árban vannak. Például a tegnapi szigetnéző túrám 3000 Ft volt, de egy elefánt park belépő, elefántagolással (hogy mondják magyarul amikor az elefánt hátán utazol???? na mindegy maradjunk az angolnál: elephant ride) 20 000 Ft.  A lényeg, hogy sok helyen kell érdeklődni és alkudni kell így lehet a legjobb árhoz jutni.  

6. Szuvenírek, csecsebecsék, mindenféle szar hamisítványok

Olcsók. NAGYON!!! Vagyis elsőzör nem, de alkudni kell. Nem vagyok egy nagy alkudozós, fura is volt először, de elég ha visszateszed a portékát és elsétálsz, rögtön utánad kiáltanak  a fele, harmada, vagy negyed annyi árral. És alkudni mindehol lehet és kell, mert elvárják, kivéve a boltokban. 

Alapvetően ezek a főbb vonalak. Szigorú költségvetésem van, naponta maximum 5000 forintot engedélyezek magamnak (kajára, vízre, autózásra, egyebekre). Ha egyik nap többet költök, a másik nap annyival kevesebbet, és fordítva. Bali nagyon olcsó hely, de persze a sok kicsi ha összegyűlik akkor máris nagyon soknak tűnik. De voltam már Rómában 3 napot összesen 100 ezerért ( és akkor se éltem nagy lábon, sőt otthonról vitt kaját ettünk reggelire és vacsira, meg a legolcsóbb szálláson voltunk ami még a komfortzónánkba befért, és sehova se fizettünk belépőt csak kívülről néztük meg). Ennek fényében 2,5 hét Ázsiáért 300-350 ezer forint szerintem nem sok, vagyis de sok,  de máshogy kell viszonyítani. Tudni kell nemet mondani dolgokra, így például az elefánt parkba nem megyek mert 20 000 forint, a szállásomon néha gekkókkal osztozkodom, és olykor olykor kimarad egy étkezés és inkább az otthonról hozott kekszeket majszolom, de itt vagyok Balin, ami régi álmom volt és a bakancslistám legelső pontját kipipálhatom :D *.*  <3
