I'm taking over management of a public informational web map for a small local government. The guy who created it over a decade ago was good with the science/analytical side of GIS but was by his own admission not great a creating an easy-to-read map. I mean, you click on something and the popup label will read "wm_NP3: JXY209". So we're going over the map, I'm talking about some of the changes I'll be able to make like more obvious labels, and he says "oh, don't do that for everything."
"Why not?"
"Some of that's critical infrastructure, we don't actually want all that information public."
His security system was to leave the default labeling for everything and hope that the sensitive information was confusing enough that only the people who needed it for legitimate purposes would be able to figure it out.

Oh, and when I asked if he kept any metadata that might help me understand his files and labels, he basically responded with, "What's metadata?"
Anyway I will be crying in the corner as I try to decipher the data for dozens of mapping files and track down where they came from. I already found out one of our (intentionally public) data layers was last designed and updated on Windows XP so um. Wish me luck.

In late January, a warning spread through the London-based Facebook group Are We Dating the Same Guy?—but this post wasn’t about a bad date or a cheating ex. A connected network of male-dominated Telegram groups had surfaced, sharing and circulating nonconsensual intimate images of women. Their justification? Retaliation.
On January 23, users in the AWDTSG Facebook group began warning about hidden Telegram groups. Screenshots and TikTok videos surfaced, revealing public Telegram channels where users were sharing nonconsensual intimate images. Further investigation by WIRED identified additional channels linked to the network. By scraping thousands of messages from these groups, it became possible to analyze their content and the patterns of abuse.
AWDTSG, a sprawling web of over 150 regional forums across Facebook alone, with roughly 3 million members worldwide, was designed by Paolo Sanchez in 2022 in New York as a space for women to share warnings about predatory men. But its rapid growth made it a target. Critics argue that the format allows unverified accusations to spiral. Some men have responded with at least three defamation lawsuits filed in recent years against members, administrators, and even Meta, Facebook’s parent company. Others took a different route: organized digital harassment.
Primarily using Telegram group data made available through Telemetr.io, a Telegram analytics tool, WIRED analyzed more than 3,500 messages from a Telegram group linked to a larger misogynistic revenge network. Over 24 hours, WIRED observed users systematically tracking, doxing, and degrading women from AWDTSG, circulating nonconsensual images, phone numbers, usernames, and location data.
From January 26 to 27, the chats became a breeding ground for misogynistic, racist, sexual digital abuse of women, with women of color bearing the brunt of the targeted harassment and abuse. Thousands of users encouraged each other to share nonconsensual intimate images, often referred to as “revenge porn,” and requested and circulated women’s phone numbers, usernames, locations, and other personal identifiers.
As women from AWDTSG began infiltrating the Telegram group, at least one user grew suspicious: “These lot just tryna get back at us for exposing them.”
When women on Facebook tried to alert others of the risk of doxing and leaks of their intimate content, AWDTSG moderators removed their posts. (The group’s moderators did not respond to multiple requests for comment.) Meanwhile, men who had previously coordinated through their own Facebook groups like “Are We Dating the Same Girl” shifted their operations in late January to Telegram's more permissive environment. Their message was clear: If they can do it, so can we.
"In the eyes of some of these men, this is a necessary act of defense against a kind of hostile feminism that they believe is out to ruin their lives," says Carl Miller, cofounder of the Center for the Analysis of Social Media and host of the podcast Kill List.
The dozen Telegram groups that WIRED has identified are part of a broader digital ecosystem often referred to as the manosphere, an online network of forums, influencers, and communities that perpetuate misogynistic ideologies.
“Highly isolated online spaces start reinforcing their own worldviews, pulling further and further from the mainstream, and in doing so, legitimizing things that would be unthinkable offline,” Miller says. “Eventually, what was once unthinkable becomes the norm.”
This cycle of reinforcement plays out across multiple platforms. Facebook forums act as the first point of contact, TikTok amplifies the rhetoric in publicly available videos, and Telegram is used to enable illicit activity. The result? A self-sustaining network of harassment that thrives on digital anonymity.
TikTok amplified discussions around the Telegram groups. WIRED reviewed 12 videos in which creators, of all genders, discussed, joked about, or berated the Telegram groups. In the comments section of these videos, users shared invitation links to public and private groups and some public channels on Telegram, making them accessible to a wider audience. While TikTok was not the primary platform for harassment, discussions about the Telegram groups spread there, and in some cases users explicitly acknowledged their illegality.
TikTok tells WIRED that its Community Guidelines prohibit image-based sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and nonconsensual sexual acts, and that violations result in removals and possible account bans. They also stated that TikTok removes links directing people to content that violates its policies and that it continues to invest in Trust and Safety operations.
Intentionally or not, the algorithms powering social media platforms like Facebook can amplify misogynistic content. Hate-driven engagement fuels growth, pulling new users into these communities through viral trends, suggested content, and comment-section recruitment.
As people caught notice on Facebook and TikTok and started reporting the Telegram groups, they didn’t disappear—they simply rebranded. Reactionary groups quickly emerged, signaling that members knew they were being watched but had no intention of stopping. Inside, messages revealed a clear awareness of the risks: Users knew they were breaking the law. They just didn’t care, according to chat logs reviewed by WIRED. To absolve themselves, one user wrote, “I do not condone im [simply] here to regulate rules,” while another shared a link to a statement that said: “I am here for only entertainment purposes only and I don’t support any illegal activities.”
Meta did not respond to a request for comment.
Messages from the Telegram group WIRED analyzed show that some chats became hyper-localized, dividing London into four regions to make harassment even more targeted. Members casually sought access to other city-based groups: “Who’s got brum link?” and “Manny link tho?”—British slang referring to Birmingham and Manchester. They weren’t just looking for gossip. “Any info from west?” one user asked, while another requested, “What’s her @?”— hunting for a woman’s social media handle, a first step to tracking her online activity.
The chat logs further reveal how women were discussed as commodities. “She a freak, I’ll give her that,” one user wrote. Another added, “Beautiful. Hide her from me.” Others encouraged sharing explicit material: “Sharing is caring, don’t be greedy.”
Members also bragged about sexual exploits, using coded language to reference encounters in specific locations, and spread degrading, racial abuse, predominantly targeting Black women.
Once a woman was mentioned, her privacy was permanently compromised. Users frequently shared social media handles, which led other members to contact her—soliciting intimate images or sending disparaging texts.
Anonymity can be a protective tool for women navigating online harassment. But it can also be embraced by bad actors who use the same structures to evade accountability.
"It’s ironic," Miller says. "The very privacy structures that women use to protect themselves are being turned against them."
The rise of unmoderated spaces like the abusive Telegram groups makes it nearly impossible to trace perpetrators, exposing a systemic failure in law enforcement and regulation. Without clear jurisdiction or oversight, platforms are able to sidestep accountability.
Sophie Mortimer, manager of the UK-based Revenge Porn Helpline, warned that Telegram has become one of the biggest threats to online safety. She says that the UK charity’s reports to Telegram of nonconsensual intimate image abuse are ignored. “We would consider them to be noncompliant to our requests,” she says. Telegram, however, says it received only “about 10 piece of content” from the Revenge Porn Helpline, “all of which were removed.” Mortimer did not yet respond to WIRED’s questions about the veracity of Telegram’s claims.
Despite recent updates to the UK’s Online Safety Act, legal enforcement of online abuse remains weak. An October 2024 report from the UK-based charity The Cyber Helpline shows that cybercrime victims face significant barriers in reporting abuse, and justice for online crimes is seven times less likely than for offline crimes.
"There’s still this long-standing idea that cybercrime doesn’t have real consequences," says Charlotte Hooper, head of operations of The Cyber Helpline, which helps support victims of cybercrime. "But if you look at victim studies, cybercrime is just as—if not more—psychologically damaging than physical crime."
A Telegram spokesperson tells WIRED that its moderators use “custom AI and machine learning tools” to remove content that violates the platform's rules, “including nonconsensual pornography and doxing.”
“As a result of Telegram's proactive moderation and response to reports, moderators remove millions of pieces of harmful content each day,” the spokesperson says.
Hooper says that survivors of digital harassment often change jobs, move cities, or even retreat from public life due to the trauma of being targeted online. The systemic failure to recognize these cases as serious crimes allows perpetrators to continue operating with impunity.
Yet, as these networks grow more interwoven, social media companies have failed to adequately address gaps in moderation.
Telegram, despite its estimated 950 million monthly active users worldwide, claims it’s too small to qualify as a “Very Large Online Platform” under the European Union’s Digital Service Act, allowing it to sidestep certain regulatory scrutiny. “Telegram takes its responsibilities under the DSA seriously and is in constant communication with the European Commission,” a company spokesperson said.
In the UK, several civil society groups have expressed concern about the use of large private Telegram groups, which allow up to 200,000 members. These groups exploit a loophole by operating under the guise of “private” communication to circumvent legal requirements for removing illegal content, including nonconsensual intimate images.
Without stronger regulation, online abuse will continue to evolve, adapting to new platforms and evading scrutiny.
The digital spaces meant to safeguard privacy are now incubating its most invasive violations. These networks aren’t just growing—they’re adapting, spreading across platforms, and learning how to evade accountability.

just saw your patreon tax post, but what is bad about kofi membership? I got confuse after seeing comments arguining about which platform is better, and you also talked about kofi a bit...
I wish I can make a patreon but I got nothing but my writings, which barely get any attention
[context]
Okay I should've phrased it correctly, it's less about which platform is better than the other, but rather which platform is more suited for you. I know you're more on writing, but I'll offer a general view since I've used both sites + others has asked me about this. Disclaimer, these are all from my personal experience, it can be different to the rest.
What both of them can do:
Offer tier membership, you can offer free or paid and list down the benefits of joining your membership, you can also limit how many members you want.
Basic build in functions such as posting photo and poll.
Digital and physical benefits.
Analytics and tracking management.
Discord integration.
Financial payouts such as PayPal, Stripe or Cards.
Ko-fi membership
The Good
Generalized service for smaller scale projects, such as a tipping site and paywalled subscription service for fewer fees than patreon (ko-fi takes 5%).
Good for beginners because there are a lot of things that can be performed with a simple button, with comprehensive FAQ lists. Extremely straightforward with zero hastle.
Payment goes directly into your digital (PayPal/Stripe) or physical (card) wallet, no waiting for payout days.
The Bad
No NSFW content, if you try to go around this rule high chance to get penalized and your account goes bye bye. I've seen artists who offer nsfw art commissions in a hush hush way, but guess what? Ko-fi monitors your dms apparently, so if you sent nsfw related content through DMs or Posts, you're very likely going to get banned (happened to a friend).
There's no mobile app, might be a hastle if you want to post and handle things, every notification or changes you'll have to do it on web or desktop/laptop.
No direct video uploads, you'll have to use a link (a disadvantage if you're offering timelapse videos or podcasts)
For discord integration, it's finicky, half the time it doesn't work. This is due to pledger needing to connect their discord to their profile first before joining yours.
Sales tax are not automated. I may be incorrect here so better refer the FAQ, but from what I am understanding is that kofi doesn't automatically calculate, collect and remit sales/VAT/GST tax based on the buyer's location, content sold and local tax laws. You need to manually add them yourself. If you're charging $10, the buyer pays exactly $10, you receive <$10. If your country requires you to collect VAT or other sales tax, you're responsible for calculating how much should go to taxes, reporting and possibly remitting that amount manually or issuing any tax-compliant invoices if required. Uhhh so far I have not seen any cases regarding taxes, so I'm basing this off their FAQ page, posts online and youtube.
No group dms, so if you're someone who prefers to have more engagements with your supporters such as wanting to update things through chats, asking feedbacks, or simply just vibing with them, it might feel limited on Ko-fi. This is why most people have a separate discord group for better handling and posting in general.
Limited management. There are lesser details on post views, membership management, tracking payment or managing your posts. Every post you share in Ko-fi goes directly in your gallery which, in my opinion, kinda sucks because it's cluttery and messy. You will just have a tab of payment, like who joined, who has outstanding payment and who left.
Patreon
The Good
Bigger popularity and attention since it has been a thing for years. Also famously known as "pay so you can see art of dicks, tits and balls" site. Although throughout the years they've been trying to suppress NSFW posting for some reason (it is still allowed, just with some bullshit rules to deal with).
Mobile apps available, simple to use and comfortable to handle everything anywhere any time.
You can upload videos directly. You can also do polls, audio, link and livestreams.
Detailed analytics. Posts impressions/views, membership earnings, surveys (what your patreon members are joining your membership for), traffic (total visit of your patreon page and where they're coming from). This is especially useful when you have a massive following and want to have insights and control over your performance (or if you just wanna be nosy like me KAJSDKF).
Buttload of other functions that I myself have not learn much, such as automated promotions, discounts and product selling.
Built-in Discord integration. Uhm idk if Patreon works better than Ko-fi cuz when I transition to Patreon I didnt set up a discord group like before (I don't have the commitment to run and maintain them)
(Again as previously mentioned, fact check on their official page instead because I'm not sure about this) Sales tax automatically calculated and added. Patreon automatically adds VAT or applicable taxes on top of what supporter pays. If you're charging $5, a supporter from EU is charged $5.60, you get $5 in patreon and 0.60 goes to tax authorities, final money you're getting is <5$. They also handle tax collection, filling and remitting to country and provide tax reports for your records.
There are group dms (called Community tab). You can update processes and notify them directly there. It may not be as versatile as your regular communication apps like discord (eg, you can only send one image at a time to the group) but it's enough to keep some form of engagement. There is also Moderation hub to assign moderators or reported content stuff (I personally have not use this thing).
The Bad
Personally, starting patreon page was daunting to me cuz *points at FAQ and setup pages* THAT'S A LOT OF WORDS. It is not as straightforward as Ko-fi, so if you're struggling with management or suck at English like me, it can be terrifying to do the first few steps, it is a bit more advance. However, since Patreon is widely use you can ask people that has em and they'll be happy to help out, not to mention videos and tutorials out there that simplify the process. (Thank you Bressy and Shiba for helping out my initial phases)
The random ban for no reason, I've seen people who got their accounts banned when they created their patreon page, idk the full story as to why or how but, yeah it happens. Customer service varies between countries, some good some bad.
Higher charging fees, patreon takes 8% instead of 5%, if you're on premium plan then they'll take 12%. They are however, changing this and just charge 10% for ALL new blog that starts after August 4th. If you have a blog before August 4th, you'll be the 8% group still. Payment processing fees varies by region and method, typically is 2.9% + $0.40. These fees could add up quickly and offer losses over gain if you're running small tiers or have a large fan base. I also heard generated tax bookkeeping files are slightly confusing to count if you're not familiar with these business stuff.
Payout delays. Initial funs will take 5-10 days (or longer if you're unlucky) after the first pledge (like when you get a first patreon). They stay in patreon and you'll either set up automatic payout or manually withdraw them, compare to Ko-fi's instant withdrawals.
I don't know much about this but I think the Shops option differ to Ko-fi and I've heard people saying Patreon Shop setup is more finicky, so yeah that.
okay that's a lot of words so which one should I choose????
If you want simplicity, something on the side just to earn some extra income, with no thoughts about expanding it beyond a comfortable numbers of supporters (such as 10-12 members), then Ko-Fi is great. There are many memberships out there who offer benefits besides art! Such as writing, photography, editing, even algebra classes. It just really comes down to what you can offer with your skills and capabilities.
If you want to build a community, you want to continue expanding to a certain goal, you want more control over financial management, systems and tools, then Patreon is the way to go. This is especially preferred if you have content-driven mindset and if you have audiences to reach.
The reason why I am suggesting to make your patreon post now is obviously the tax increment stuff, but also if you already have that thought to have a page in the future. I understand the concern of "but i'm not ready" or "i ain't got stuff to offer", but you can always have a blank state with free memberships only. If you truly want to offer something, I believe a few passage of your current wip about your fics, or if you're an artist a simple doodle every month should probably keep your page afloat (and I mean you can ask your friends to join for free and do the engagement sillays like liking and commenting if you want extra security). Idk if patreon allows blank pages though so uhm, don't say I didn't warn you if something did happen lmao xD
I read other comments that talked abou 10% is not that high, which is fair since everyone has a different financial status and background. I'm not out here forcing anyone to start a patreon right away, I am just simply suggesting.
I wish I can make a patreon but I got nothing but my writings, which barely get any attention
I'm going to be very blunt about this and you might dislike what I am going to say, but if you have a goal you'll have to put in that effort to research, learn, experience the loss and failure, fall hard and step up again. I too, was once an account with 1 follower, and it's from Tumblr official page. My doodles were not the greatest, it's not rendered God-like, nor does it have any coherency. While I didn't think about starting memberships very early on, once I had that thought I started pushing myself to be better. Being a creative-based person online can be challenging, because if you want some financial gain from this, you'll have to put in the work to earn it. Studying what algorithm wants, what the audiences like, how other users alike are utilizing their skills to pull in the people. It's a long process that involves a lot of trial and errors, and it gets incredibly frustrating and tiring with a lot of burntout and giving up. Because you usually have to do something that you yourself may not like, but the vast majority do. You have 2 options with this kind of dilemma, stay true to yourself and do whatever you want, create and write what you want to be authentic, and find the real ones who would support you along the way, this one will be a longer road and lesser moments of "shit man, why the hell do i still write alien fucking if it throws me off." The other is okay, you figure out the people want, so time to improve and start working on that thing and slowly gain a steady amount of followers, and when you finally feel like it? start creating things you actually prefer. If they leave, they leave, if they stay, then they stay, you win some you lose some. I personally chose the second path, and yes I've lost a lot of people and support along the way, but I am happy with my progress. It took me about a year + before I launched ko-fi membership for 6 months, and then transition to Patreon now if you want a picture of my growth.
I don't think I'm there yet, even with my followings, even with patreon set up. There are many times where I still felt like what I do is inadequate and I'm ripping off their wallet with my creations and benefits. That is why I am still working my darn hardest to improve and to keep moving forward, but also to stop and reflect on my progress, to understand that these people are supporting me because they wanted to and they've been extremely kind and supportive along the way.
Well what I'm trying to say is, every foundation is hard to build, every beginning feels like torture, because it's foreign and it's tiring to even think about it, but if you want, or in other cases, need this growth and expansion, you'll have to endure it. Just like learning how to ride a bike, ya gonna fall and ya gonna bleed at times, but once you're comfortable with the handles, the rest of the ride will be easier, not smooth sailing, just easier! because there are still some bumpy road and blockage ahead, it's an ever learning curve.
Since I come from art concept, I cannot offer much advice with writings. The best way for me to improve is by looking up at what others are doing, so a good start is always connecting with others. Do you like an author's work? then read up about them like how you're putting that blorbo under a microscope and analyze the shit outta them. How do they post? What words do they use often? What prompts or premise is usually popular with their posts? What time do they post? How do they communicate with others? How do they communicate to you? How do they tag their post to reach 2k notes? How do they respond to questions about their memberships if they have one? What benefits are they offering in their pages? etc etc
idk maybe this all sounds way too much work to earn 10 pledgers in patreon, maybe all these are just way too elaborated but, at the end of the day it really depends what you want, how much are you willing to achieve the goal and how comfortable you are with these online content monthly producing responsibilities, stuff. Yeah.
Either way, I wish you all the best in your endeavors!

California's handling of sensitive health information is under scrutiny following a report that data entered by residents on the state's health insurance marketplace was shared with LinkedIn.
Covered California, which runs the state's marketplace, coveredca.com, shared sensitive personal data with LinkedIn, a subsidiary of Microsoft, through embedded tracking tools on the website, nonprofit news organization The Markup reported on Monday.
Covered California confirmed the data transmission in a news release later that day, saying "some sensitive data was inadvertently collected by the tags, including first names, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, and other sensitive health information like pregnancy status."
It added that all advertising-related tags on the website had been turned off as a "precautionary measure," and that it would review the extent of the data shared.
Representative Kevin Kiley, the Democrat from California has called for an investigation. "This is incredibly disturbing," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Newsweek contacted Representative Kiley via social media and email, as well as the press offices of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.and California Governor Gavin Newsom via email outside of regular working hours on Wednesday.
Why It Matters
Concerns over personal data have grown in recent months after it emerged the government's Department of Government Efficiencyworked to gain access to the Social Security Administration's data systems, which hold sensitive personal data about approximately 70 million Americans.
California's sharing of sensitive data with LinkedIn will likely raise similar concerns about threats to Americans' privacy.
What To Know
Trackers on coveredca.com, which was created under the Affordable Care Act, captured users' answers to questions about blindness, pregnancy, high prescription use, gender identity and experiences with domestic abuse, The Markup reported.
The data was then transmitted to LinkedIn using Insight Tag, which uses code to track how visitors interact with websites.
Covered California said in a statement that it "leverages LinkedIn's advertising platform tools to understand consumer behavior;" however, LinkedIn notes on its website that Insight Tag "should not be installed on web pages that collect or contain Sensitive Data."
The LinkedIn campaign trackers began in February 2024 and were removed "due to a marketing agency transition" in early April, Covered California told CalMatters.
Covered California had more than 60 trackers on its site, compared to the average on other government sites of three, CalMatters reported.
What People Are Saying
Covered California said in a news release on Monday: "Covered California is reviewing its entire website and information security and privacy protocols to ensure that no analytics tools are impermissibly collecting or sharing sensitive consumer information. The LinkedIn Insight tags are no longer active and, as a precautionary measure, all active advertising-related tags across the CoveredCA.com website have been turned off.
"Covered California is committed to safeguarding the confidential information and privacy of its consumers. The organization will share additional findings from this investigation as they become available."
California Representative Kevin Kiley, wrote on X: "California's Obamacare website tracked users' personal health information—such as pregnancy and prescription drug use—and sent it to LinkedIn for a 'marketing campaign.' We are asking Secretary Kennedy to investigate for HIPAA violations."
What Happens Next
The Department of Health and Human Services has yet to respond publicly to Kiley's call for an investigation.

The Importance of Web & Mobile App Analytics in Modern Business.
The Importance of Web & Mobile App Analytics in Modern Business
📊 Why Web & Mobile App Analytics Matter in Modern Business
This is where web and mobile applications really transformed the way businesses interact with their customers. Then, however, developing an app remains merely a step. Business activities need to continue tracking and evolving their digital efforts if they are to survive. Web & mobile analytics come in at this point, which helps users understand the behavior of end-users in order to make better decisions and thus satisfy the customers more satisfyingly.
Pro Tip: The companies that will actually be competing are those that are meaningfully moving towards leveraging analytics. Find more advanced analytics strategies at Sage Titans.
🎯 Key Benefits of Web & Mobile App Analytics
1. 🕵️ Understanding User Behavior
User behavior analytics provide a roadmap to understanding how users interact with your app or website. Knowing how users navigate and which features they engage with can be game-changing.
How to Analyze User Behavior
Track User Journeys: Follow the path users take from opening the app to completing a desired action.
Identify popular features: Recognize which features drive the most engagement and focus on optimizing these areas.
Optimize Drop-Off Points: Analyze where users abandon tasks and make adjustments to reduce drop-off rates.
Expert Tip: Using analytics, you can tailor features to meet user expectations. Popular analytics tools like Google Analytics and Mixpanel are essential for tracking these metrics.
2. 📈 Boosting User Retention and Engagement
With the purpose of determinants that enhance retention, analytics from both mobile and web apps is one of the major objectives. The fact that experience is always very personal makes it nudge users back again and again, and analyzing the apps gives an understanding of what keeps the users.
Improvement Strategies for User Retention
Push Notifications: Engage with inactive users by sending relevant, personalized notifications based on their past interaction or in-app behavior.
Feature Analysis: Pinpoint which features are not quite cutting it and attempt changes to get better engagement.
In-App Messaging: This is a tool for offering users helpful hints as well as giving them updates on new features to keep users informed.
Did You Know: Using in-app messaging tools increases retention by 20%. Fact-telling it like it is: all about the power of personalization.
3. 🌍 Tracking Location-Based Insights for Better Targeting
Business companies continuously monitor location-based data so that the content, offers, and features can be customized according to a user's real location. For example, a place-finding mobile app would be capable of geo-targeted promotion or would help a user find a nearby store.
Using Location Data Effectively
Targeted Promotions: Send location-based notifications, such as nearby offers, to drive foot traffic.
User Patterns: Identify trends related to where and when your app is most used, providing insights into customer behavior.
Local Optimization: Tailor app features or web pages to fit the cultural and linguistic preferences of local audiences.
Pro Insight: Integrating location data with your analytics can help you make smart, location-driven decisions that increase both engagement and revenue.
🛠️ Essential Analytics Tools for Business Apps
1. 📊 Google Analytics for Web & Mobile
Among the most sought-after tools for analytics both in web and mobile applications, Google Analytics should be mentioned for providing a complete set of features to track user activities, along with understanding the demographics and behavior of the users with both Web and mobile platforms.
Key Features
User Demographics: Understand your audience’s age, location, and preferences.
User flows: Track the steps a user takes on your site or app. This will help identify any potential bottlenecks.
Customizable Goals: Set up a goal on the key actions such as purchases, sign-ups, or downloads to understand the conversion better.
Tip for Business Owners: Using Google Analytics Ecommerce Tracking will be able to get insights of the journeys users undergo and thereby better optimize sales funnels.
2. 📱 Mixpanel for Advanced App Analytics
Mixpanel is ideal for tracking user interactions in detail, offering a deeper understanding of user engagement and retention. This tool provides event-based tracking and helps businesses focus on what really matters.
Key Features
Event-Based Tracking: Track the precise specific actions done by a user; in other words, how many clicked on a certain button or viewed a specific video.
Segmentation: This refers to the grouping of the user entities based on some behavior, location, or type of device.
Funnels and Retention: Set up funnels to determine where people bail out and how often they come back.
Pro Insight: Mixpanel is particularly valuable for SaaS apps, as it helps businesses optimize user onboarding and engagement flows.
3. 🛠️ Other Analytics Tools to Consider
For businesses looking to take a more comprehensive approach, here are some of the best mobile app analytics tools to consider:
Firebase Analytics: Ideal for developers who want seamless integration with Google’s suite of tools.
App Annie provides insights on app usage, rankings, and revenue across different regions and devices.
Amplitude: Perfect for tracking user behavior and generating insights on product engagement.
Recommendation: Choose a tool that aligns with your app’s specific needs. Consult with a web & mobile app development company like Sapphire Software Solutions for personalized guidance.
📚 Practical Tips for Leveraging Analytics in Web & Mobile Apps
1. 📅 Set Clear Goals and KPIs
Without clear goals, analytics can become overwhelming. A clear definition of a KPI will be developed to reflect the specific business objectives, such as the number of users during the month, retention rate, or average session length.
Goal-Setting Tip: Break down KPIs by app features so you can track which features are driving the most value.
2. 📈 Experiment with A/B Testing
A/B testing lets one compare multiple versions of a feature to find out which would best perform. It's just an excellent way to continually come up with improvements in the user experience.
How to Use A/B Testing
Feature Testing: Test new features on a small segment of users before a full rollout.
UI/UX Adjustments: experiment with different layouts, colors, and wording.
Messaging: Test variations in messaging for push notifications and in-app communications.
Pro Tip: Run A/B tests regularly to keep up with user preferences and maximize the effectiveness of your app.
3. 🔒 Prioritize User Privacy and Data Security
With increased considerations around data privacy, data collection should be transparent, and there must be consent from users; hence, it is also essential to be compliant with regulations such as GDPR and CCPA.
Security Insight: Ensure your analytics provider follows strict security protocols to protect your data. Sapphire Software Solutions emphasizes privacy in all its web & mobile application development projects.
Conclusion: Harnessing the Power of Web & Mobile App Analytics

Note
yes pls give us your internet privacy wisdom
Disclaimer: I am not an expert and these are just the small things that I've started doing recently to increase my privacy online. People who know what they're talking about will have better advice than I do, so take what I say with a grain of salt and, just like with everything else on the internet, do your own research!
Alright, first of all, let me get out of the way the basics, which we all should know by now: be careful with the personal information you share. There's things that are more dangerous to share than others (for example, saying that you live in Europe is less dangerous than saying you live in Berlin) and it is unrealistic to say "never share anything about yourself, ever", but do be aware of the fact that you don't know who can see what you're posting. Be sure that you don't mind who sees the information you're making public or, if you do, that it can't be traced to you. If you're forced to give out personal information you don't feel like sharing, lie.
Second, STAY AWAY FROM GOOGLE. Try to avoid using it as much as you can. If possible, switch to another email service that will care about privacy and security (I think proton is the most popular alternative, but I've switched to tutamail for non work related things). If you're using Google Chrome, switch to Firefox and download extensions that will help you with privacy and security. This is a list of the extensions I have and their official descriptions:
AdNauseam. "AdNauseam not only blocks ads, it obfuscates browsing data to resist tracking by the online ad industry."
ClearURLs. "This extension will automatically remove tracking elements from URLs to help protect your privacy when browsing through the Internet."
Decentraleyes. "Protects you against tracking through “free”, centralized, content delivery."
Privacy Badger. "Privacy Badger automatically learns to block invisible trackers."
Privacy Possum. "Privacy Possum monkey wrenches common commercial tracking methods by reducing and falsifying the data gathered by tracking companies."
TrackMeNot. "Protect against data profiling by search engines"
WhatCampaign. "swap out Google Analytics parameters with invalid data"
If you don't have an adblocker at this point, I have no idea how you can surf the web without wanting to smash your head against the wall, but just in case you don't, ublock is my best friend and it has never failed me, no matter how invasive and mandatory a website has tried to make their ads (yes, I'm talking about YouTube).
We all know that Google's search function is basically useless at this point, so switch to other search engines. There's a lot of alternatives, but I use mainly Qwant and sometimes DuckDuckGo, and I always find what I'm looking for.
For this point, I really recommend the r/degoogle subreddit, there's a ton of resources there about how to degoogle your life and information that can be more useful to your specific case. Honestly, it's difficult, but any change you make is better than nothing.
Third, take your time with cookies. I know that they're annoying, especially on mobile, where they take the full screen, but avoid accepting them mindlessly. Take a couple of seconds to deselect all the cookies that the website allows you to deselect. If you feel like that's a lot of work (because there is no "deselect all" button, or for any other reason), ask yourself if you really want to use that website or if you can go somewhere else.
That's everything I've been implementing in my life for the past few months. I'm trying to get better at this, so if anyone who knows more than I do has more advice or suggestions about what could be done, I'd love to hear about it!
