I believe that critical thinking is something unnatural. However, as we face challenges, we strengthen our problem-solving skills by carefully analyzing different factors and tackling them head-on in tough situations. This is something we naturally pick up over time. For me, the last semester was a suitable opportunity to practice critical thinking while interacting with a diverse group of people in various scenarios. It was enjoyable to share similar aspirations and learn new things with my classmates as we worked towards common goals. I could say that our past activities in class are alike an ant colony. We began as a group, but we created our unique areas based on our styles, all while moving forward together without losing our identities. There are numerous chambers, yet the ant colony is one cohesive unit.

This class felt like a team effort, and while I was used to working in teams, collaborating with peers with similar interests was a fresh experience. The most memorable part of the CTS-A was when we created a monument, as it was the first time we went through the process of teamwork. I had to express my ideas confidently while gradually finding common ground with my teammates' differing opinions. It was fascinating to see how we could harmonize our thoughts through compromise and understanding. Looking at the final result, I felt that my identity shone through, along with unique traits that I didn’t possess. Instead of working solo, I appreciated the chance to broaden my style by learning from others and filling in each other's gaps. I’ve grown a lot from those experiences.

Personally, the practical advice and tips Shawn shared as a senior designer were utilizable. I could say that the class was open-minded and genuine. It would have been more fascinating to have additional chances to apply these methods as a team in various settings. Out of all my first-semester classes, CTS-A offered me the biggest sense of accomplishment as I experienced significant personal growth.

This is one where I think the legislation would be too harmful to be worth it. I can't see a reasonable way to enforce this that isn't just expanding copyright. I think there's an extremely solid case for LLM's being just any other software, although you're not wrong, hell knows what EU legislation might try and do to say otherwise, they forced Apple to drop Lightning which I still think is kind of wild.

Given this, I think that trying to legislate against a computer system accessing copyrighted information that is publicly accessible would probably open up a lot of questions about fair use and transformative works. There's a solid case to be made that an AI is less intrusive on copyright than, say, collage. Maybe a legal scholar can see how to thread that needle.

Given this as a value I hold, it feels like the best you can do is what has pretty much already been happening, a combination of manually blocking the odd web spider and sharing their existence with other webadmins. That'll kill a lot of less committed entities, but they'll always pop up if there's money to be made.

As the cost of building a custom model and selling it to some sucker comes down I think we'll see a lot more companies throwing together a shitty spider and flogging a half-baked image generator to some content farm and so on ad infinitum. There's a lot of very shady small to medium sized internet businesses out there that deal in bizzare b2b stuff.

(as for spiders that ignore robots, there's a lot of smaller ones but especially lately the one I've heard people complain about is ByteSpider, the ByteDance web spider, which regularly ignores robots.txt and also routes itself through commodity datacenters to make sure it doesn't show up in statistical traffic analyses. You can block it by name but it's really trying not to be seen.)

One of the things I find alarming about AI debates is that they are very all or nothing, and I think that the middle ground actually matters.

I certainly can't imagine a technique that would allow you to post publicly viewable text while ensuring that it was 100% impossible for anybody to use it for an AI product.

But there is already a voluntary compliance regime in place, and as far as I can tell the big companies are pretty identifiable and subject to legal regimes; even totally voluntary compliance with robots.txt is going to make a difference, and you could also aggressively pursue European style data laws for above-board datasets.

I'm really not familiar with the space, are there a lot of scam datasets out there which are run by con artists who are likely to ignore compliance and are too small or ephemeral to be audited for compliance by government agencies?

That's my analogy of locking the door to your house; it can't stop every possible agent who wants to get into your house without permission, but it can stop some, and it turns out that actually matters.
