Week Zero // The Project so Far...

Boom Boom Clap is live interactive performative project that aims to connect Performer and Audience within a live musical setting. It aims to use playful interactive design to enhance this, connection blurring the line between these two groups giving a live performance a unique experience with every show. 

It draws from the the principles of play within interaction art, the pleasures of play and, the idea of witting engagement. It also draw inspiration from works in the likeness of, Planets, by Andy Bates and Michael Smith (2014), Soundline, by AEFA@QUT (Ars Electronica Futurelab Academy at the Queensland University of Technology) (2018) and, 7Bit Hero (2012). These are the high tear benchmark projects that Boom-Boom-Clap aims to be like.

The Experience so Far..

For now only sketches have been drawn up of how this experience will take shape, these each use different inspirations so they manifest in different ways. They are; Body Hero, CopyCat, Dancing Hero, and Starry Night. The concepts all revolve around the audience interacting with the visual aspect of the performance as the performer involved wants to safe guard the music within the performance so they can perform their whole song.

Body Hero

Body hero uses the same general idea from Queen’s We Will Rock You using the audience to create percussion sounds using their bodies but adds a visual element. It takes inspiration from Guitar Hero by having the ‘notes’ fall from the top of a screen until it hits the ‘target zone’, this is where the audience will hit the corresponding percussion that the notes symbolize, these being icons in the form of emojis.

Copy Cat

Copy Cat uses the same idea as Just Dance by having the audience follow along to the choreography that is performed by the performer. It uses visuals behind her to help the audience keep up and get the general idea of what move she will be doing next. The moves are represented by a silhouette of that move and the audience will try and copy the general stance of that move. These moves will move from right to left, and when the ‘move’ hits the specified area that is when the move is performed by the performer.

Dancing Rainbow

Dancing Rainbow uses movement mapping/ motion tracking to track the movement of the audience, when it detects enough movement then it will place a random coloured circle in that place. When lots of movement is detected it will do this multiple times and this will then most likely create clumps of colour as the visuals for the performance. The idea that the audience can see that the movement they are doing is affecting the visuals encourages more movement and dance to the performance.

Starry Night

Starry Night takes more inspiration from the likes of 7Bit Hero and its use of a backchannel to interact with the visuals. The idea is to have the audience tap on their phone to the beat of the song then that is relayed to the visuals. The audience would then see a circle pulse to their tapping, with each person having a different circle. The hope is that everyone’s circle pulses to beat of the music with room for some people to be offbeat showing that they are the ones in control of the circles, encouraging further tapping.

Last decade, on The Dragonslayers...

    We join our heroes on their first adventure, when they were fresh faced, before they were legends, before they could even call themselves heroes, and before Chet had hair in embarrassing places.

    They were sent by Governor Nighthill to the town of Greenest to investigate the growing power of the mysterious Cult of the Dragon. There were rumors they were amassing weapons, building a frightening army of members, and even whispers that they had enlisted a dragon into their cause. Upon reaching Greenest the Dragonslayers found that the rumors had not been exaggerated.

    With a dragon soaring overhead and screams piercing through the smokey air they encountered two groups of cultists, one of which brought their pet Owlbear (who had been in the family for years) to the fight. Atticus sliced and diced, Chet paralyzed the family pet, and Finn re-enacted his favorite Bruce Lee DVD, putting down their enemies in short work. Finn was even able to incapacitate one of the cultists, tying him to a trough in the courtyard. But not before one of the archers was able to send a flaming arrow into a nearby house, which spread quickly across the straw roof.

    Hal (tonight the role of Hal will be played by Phobian Jones) and West quickly sprung into action. Phobian, hoping to make this month’s hottest Greenest firefighters calendar ran headlong into the building. He immediately found a farmer, unconscious in the entryway. Some quick mouth to mouth aroused the man enough to let Phobian know his family was still in the house.

    West, perceiving there was not enough drama already, erected a circular wall of water around the house, trapping the fire inside while Frank Sinatra played in the background. He then entered the house, joining Phobian in a fight against more cultists who had been interrupted in a hurried search for ... something. They quickly dispatched the cultists, and during their own frantic smokey search, found a young boy hiding under the bed, surrounded by the bodies of his murdered family.

    The boy was understandably in shock, barely aware of his surroundings and incoherent. So obviously the only right thing to do was throw him over the back of a horse, slap it’s hindquarters and send him on his way to… well wherever he might end up I guess.

    The party reconvened and headed out to see what the Cult of the Dragon was really up to. Their captive was no help, he had apparently drowned himself in the shallow trough.

Week 0 Book - The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

The first word that comes to mind to describe this book is “cozy.” I picked this one up on a whim off the reccomendation of a friend and really enjoyed it. Set chiefly at a nursing home, the story takes some entertaining yet poignent jabs at the way that seniors are frequently underestimated despite their years of experience. I really enjoyed the incorporaton of Joyce’s journal as a narrator for the events of the story, and found the book had a nice brisk pace overall. The use of dialouge and clear descriptions of staging made it feel quite a lot like reading a play-by-play of a BBC miniseries.  I’m trying not to buy any more books before I’ve worked through my backlog (part of the reason of me starting the blog), but I might not be able to resist picking up the sequel soon.

Week 0 : Power-Ranking

La draft de Fantasy Football c’est comme le BAC, soit tu as bien bossé et tu es sûr de toi comme Cyril, soit tu n’as rien foutu et tu y vas au talent comme Julien. Autant vous dire qu’une méthode est plus sûre que l’autre et qu’il ne faut pas s’y prendre au dernier moment. Heureusement, les aléas de la vie sont là pour pimenter un peu tout ça et rendre les résultats plus incertains. 2020, année du suspense ?

1. Draids Antimaskers - JB

Cette saison, JB s’est dit que pour sortir de la troisième place il fallait s’inspirer de son manager de Fantasy préféré : son Gaou. Donc ce gros bâtard lui a piqué Kittle et les RB rookies sous le nez. Bon, Julien a récupérer Kelce donc ça devrait aller mais du coup le Gaou de Cagolie a peut-être un peu trop misé sur les rookies RB en les draftant quasiment tous… Une stratégie à quitte ou double qui, je pense, devrait s’avérer payante surtout que Taylor arrive derrière une grosse OL et Edwards-Helaire dans une attaque monstrueuse qui devrait lui ouvrir beaucoup d’espace pour ses courses. Wilson devrait rester l’élément principal de son attaque et faire du point, Davante Adams sera probablement le gars sûr des WRs pour la troisième année consécutive. Il y a peut être un manque d’un second WR clair dans son line-up mais nous avons probablement à faire à l’équipe la plus solide de ce début de saison.

2. Permaculture of Failing - Julien

Et bien malgré les moqueries de Cyril pendant toute la draft, on a une équipe plutôt solide pour Julien. Lamar Jackson devrait truster les hauts de tableaux si il ne se fait pas découper par une défense, Aaron Jones devrait rester un des éléments principaux de l’attaque de Green Bay, Hopkins et Cooper sont des titulaires en puissance, inutile de rappeler que Kelce est une des cibles préférées d’un QB monstrueux, Lutz aura forcément l’occasion de marquer pas mal de points par match et ses défenses font parti des meilleures de la ligue… Les problèmes devraient plutôt se trouver du côté du flex et du banc qui, si il n’est pas mauvais en soit, devrait poser des problèmes de line-up chaque semaine. Une bonne cuvée pour peut-être enfin transformer l’essai ?

3. La Meute - Virgile

Virgile n’est jamais aussi fort que lorsqu’il ne draft pas lui même. L’anti-Cyril jusqu’au bout du concept. Un QB solide, des bons WRs et un RB1 qui a surpris tout le monde l’année dernière. Avec Andrews en TE et la défense des 49ers on a de bonnes fondations pour une belle équipe. Attention néanmoins à ne pas devenir un colosse aux pieds d’argiles car le banc manque cruellement de RB sur lesquels se reposer. Néanmoins notre fonctionnaire préféré est un connaisseur du waiver et devrait être en mesure de compenser les faiblesses de son équipe semaines après semaines.

4. Wear your damn mask - Cyril

Les dieux de la technologie étaient contre Cyril pour cette draft. Entre le client qui bug et son autodraft qui semblent sélectionner les joueurs en mode random, le champion en titre s’est vu perdre de précieuses sélections lors des premiers tours. Il se retrouve privé de RB ou WR considéré comme des machines à points indiscutables bien qu’il ait réussi à récupérer Cook et Mixon qui, si leur santé suit, devraient tout de même être rentables pour lui. Ajouté à cela un QB qui lui fera à lui tout seul certains match-ups, une grosse défense et une profondeur de banc non négligeable, au final Cyril se retrouve peut-être avec une meilleure base que l’année dernière et sa hype sur les Browns. Cyril ne commencera donc pas sur le podium dans le power-ranking mais on connait tous la suite de l’histoire...

5. The Zerlo Sheeps - Lance

Lancelot ne s’est pas assez préparé et ça s’est senti dans certains picks prématurés qui font que sont équipe n’est peut-être pas aussi complète qu’elle aurait pu l’être. Malgré tout il y a un bon équilibre avec un QB qui, même si on aime bien se moquer de lui, à tendance à être plutôt productif en Fantasy (contrairement à Aaron Rodgers, on lui donne les armes qu’il faut pour distribuer les passes…), un très bon duo de RB titulaires, un des meilleurs K de la ligue, une défense efficace et un bon IDP. Engram bénéficiera peut-être d’une montée en puissance de Daniel Jones pour sa seconde année en titulaire. La difficulté du jeune marié se trouvera plutôt dans sa sélection de WR, il manque d’un joueur vraiment déterminant dans son équipe pour ne pas avoir à jongler, et paniquer, chaque semaine entre ses différentes possibilité.

6. Les herbes folles - Mael

Malgré quelques excentricités, la draft de Mael est tout à fait correct. Le nain qui lui sert de QB devrait gagner en profondeur dans son jeu de passe cette saison et donc s’ouvrir des passages pour ses courses. Barkley est un excellent RB, Chubb aussi mais il pourrait se voir gêné par Karim Hunt. Il s’est doté une belle liste de WR qui pourraient lui amener pas mal de points si il sait faire les bons choix en fonction des match-ups (et la forme des joueurs mais on est plus sur de la devinette à ce niveau là). Reste à voir si Hunter Henry sera dans une année avec une belle production, cela dépendra de sa connexion avec son nouveau QB et de ses blessures.

7. Show Us Your TDs - JR

La draft fut un peu chaotique pour JR et ça se sent dans son équipe. Si il peut se reposer sur un bon duo de WR et un RB considéré comme élite, le reste de son line-up est moins évident. Brees devrait tout même bien performer même si il semble être sur le déclin, la défense des Pats devrait profiter d’une division plutôt faible mais le nombre de blessés et défections ne va pas les aider. Il y a aussi l’inconnu sur le niveau actuel de Gronk qui revient pour le nouveau défi de Tom Brady à Tampa Bay et ça devrait être le facteur X de son équipe. Une connexion avec Brady aussi forte qu’avant avec un Gronk en bonne santé et avec le bon physique pourrait le faire rentrer facilement dans le top 3 des TE, poste au combien important pour viser les playoffs !

8. Starks - Botienne

Une draft somme toute assez classique pour notre bot préféré qui s’est à nouveau dirigé vers des noms connus de la NFL. Si dans le cas de ses RBs ont est plutôt sur des valeurs sûres avec Kamara, Jacobs et Hunt, le reste de son équipe tient plutôt du pari. J’aurai tendance à penser que Cam Newton prendra rapidement la place de QB principal et renforcer le line-up des Starks mais encore une fois, tout est histoire de pari.

                            Summer Language Challenge: Week #0

I’ve finished the first week of my challenge (find it here). Summer hasn’t officially started for me (this week is my last week) so I didn’t get to study everyday. But so far I have a 3 day duolingo streak and I’m looking for good teach yourself resources (does anyone recommend any good books for teaching yourself french?)

One thing I’m trying to decide is how best to teach myself. There are sooo many different approaches to language learning it’s almost overwhelming. Right now I think I’m going to try Gabriel Wyner‘s method for language learning because I’m very much intrigued by his process.  I’ll be following his tips (not exactly because I still like to read abt grammar) while totally submerging myself in french. I’m looking for french music, french movies and french youtube, podcasts, the news basically anything I can find because I’m trying to submerge my brain. 

Second I’m focusing on listening and pronunciation for my first couple weeks (as layed out in the article above) so I might be making some audio posts so you guys can tell me how I’m doing:)

All in all it has been a good week and I’m looking forward to seeing how this next week goes as I’ll be committing to waking up early in the morning to practice.

Week 0, Thursday, 17th Jan 2019

Tine Kluth workshop

Today we had an introduction to stop-motion with Tine Kluth (an experienced stop-motion animator who has worked on many well-known animations). We used ball and socket puppets to make a short stop-motion animation on Dragonframe.

This Workshop was very informative and I learned  many new things about stop-motion from Tine and about her experience as a stop-motion animator and of how we can do animation with fond and unwanted objects, give them life through animation. This is kind of like what Jan Švankmajer does with his works. I have to say I do find his works very disturbing and creepy. Stop-motion gives of a special feeling that only stop-motion can achieve though their not so smooth animations, I’m not saying there aren’t any smooth looking stop-motion animations, I don’t actually know of any smooth animations that were created using stop-motion.

Some of my favourite animations include Corpse Bride, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline and Paranorman. I’m not really a fan of Wallace and Gromit but I don’t mind it. I also like Shaun the Sheep, which I still watch it.

This I‘m so excited for next week.

This video was quite inspiring. I really liked how they made the props.

Week 0 Movie - HOUSE ハウス

This is me, starting a new blog to track all of the movies, books, games, whatever that I’m consuming in 2022! 

I rang in the new year with Hausu, which I’ve seen countless times and absolutely and sincerely adore. I first caught it at the Roxie Theatre in San Francisco on a 35mm print, and was lucky enough to watch it for an encore screening before I moved away. I’m always delighted to find other folks who have watched it, as well as getting to show it to people who havent seen it! It’s one of my cozy comfort movies that I can just throw on at any time.  After this latest New Years watch I encountered a delightful Youtube channel of a Japanese fan who’s interviewed various cast members and even toured the house itself with a couple of them:
