oh god okay so this goes both into LWJ and WWX's speech patterns and also elements of chinese culture that i have zero authority to talk about (there are some great posts by @hunxi-guilai) but i'd have to hunt them down and i dont rly have the time right now)

but all you have to know basically is that

LWJ's speech pattern is very formal, polite and brief, using few words to convey a lot of meaning

WWX's speech pattern is for the most part very casual, using a lot of interjections and not worrying about saying too little or too much

BUT!! this changes when wei wuxian gets angry or tries to draw distance between him and someone else. it shows that he knows exactly how to speak to someone to get what he wants (ie in carp tower, when trying to find wen ning's whereabouts, he is angry but his speech is polite)

with lan wangji, we can see how this plays out when they're hanging out in a friendly manner VS fighting VS amicable but with distance, and the most heartbreaking example for me is when they're parting ways in the burial mounds. wei wuxian had been very relaxed in how he speaks for the most part, but when it came to saying goodbye, his speech turns very polite and distant, and even thanks him, as if lan wangji coming to spend time with him was a favour he was thankful for, rather than something two friends would do

all that is on purpose on wei wuxian's part, and lan wangji understands it. but the thing is: EVERYTIME wwx tried to draw a line and distance himself from lan wangji, things get worse by the next time they meet, and lan wangji starts slowly acquiring a bad reaction to it. so, by the time of post-ressurection, and especially when they both start suspecting that their feelings are requited, everytime wei wuxian thanks lan wangji, he freezes, because it feels like wwx's affections are coming from a place of gratitude rather than sincerity (especially after you learn about the things that wwx doesnt remember)

JUST. *GESTURES VAGUELY* lan wangji doesnt want gratitude, he doesn't want wei ying to treat him with distance, he doesn't want this bond they have to be tied by anything other than genuine wish to be close to each other. when wei ying starts talking to him with such distant words of politeness rather than the overfamiliarness of their younger years, it hurts him a lot

Rapunzel inspired AU (dark!lan wangji) — LWJ loses his mind after WWX's death. He goes to Burial Mounds and finds A-Yuan. However, instead of going back to Cloud Recesses, he goes to a long abandoned Gusulan property in the woods, and raises the boy there, without contact to the exterior world.

This world is selfish and cruel. People are selfish and cruel. If you're one of the good people, they will take everything they can from you, and abandon you when there's nothing left, just like they did with Wei Ying. Lan Wangji won't let this happen with A-Yuan; not when he's the live proof that his Wei Ying wasn't the monster everyone believed him to be, made him be.

Sizhui grows up locked in that house fearful of the world (that LWJ made sure to tell all of the war and violence from a young age), training, studying, and paying respects to this Wei Ying who, despite he never remembering anything about this man, Father always says it's important.

Ohhhh does he throw WWX in there with LSZ once he returns? LWJ would be happy that the family is back together while casually stopping all of WWXs escape plans. WWX tries to get LSZ to help him, but LSZ is content and doesnt want to lose his new family member because it can get very lonely all alone in that house.

Hoping I’ll remember enough of this to elaborate in the morning, but hear me out: sentient burial mounds au, it decides to make a scene at the… im too tired to remember the name help… phoenix mountain hunt. The banquet, specifically. Golden core reveal… i think my brain is imagining a scenario where its upset that others are hurting wwx emotionally bc its the only one that gets to do that… not entirely sure

alternatively wwx made a deal (knowingly or following canon?) with the consciousnesses of the burial mounds and they have come to collect. They decide to threaten JC because he carries a part of WWX that they never got to have… but theyre being playful in a cruel kind of way? I have an image of them inflicting the memory of the procedure on all the cultivators there just to mess w the cultivators.

WWX would be very upset. (Like: “hey your deal was with me, not him” whole argument, furious on his part, playful on theirs; picture wwx when he’s deliberately making ppl he doesnt like mad as a teen) And also anxious because wen ning. Sadly theres not really a better-timed gathering- wait no there is, the one right after the sunshot campaign is prob better for this.

where is lwj in this? Probably staring in horror with the occasional interjection of a very distressed “wei ying”. I am actually sad just thinking about it. Maybe have the burial mounds make him pass out i feel bad making him witness this.

so pros of (Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing):

one of the few possible het ships available to mdzs fans like there are all of five named female characters and this is the only one not in an established het pairing. and like sure ive seen yanli w/ someone else a couple times but you CANT put her with JIANG CHENG and i cant say ive ever seen mianmian in a serious relationship in fics with anyone besides either her canon hubby or a chick (usually yanli, wen qing herself, or even sometimes both lmao).

it’s basically written itself in cql!! he has a very obv and clear crush on her, even gives her a comb and offers to help her! she seems interested but the way the storyline went it was simply not meant to be :’(

you get to pair off jiang cheng!! ngl once u finish mdzs its kinda sad for everyone not wangxian (in their generation/above) cuz theyre the only one that get a happy ending. Everyone else is forever alone / depressed / bitter or a combination thereof. so it’s nice to see jiang cheng getting a happy ending!

he... gets... kids...? like ngl as a childless person that is happy to stay that way thats not exactly a pro in my eyes but you might look at his relationship w/ jin ling and say “he’s a great father! he deserves to be a father!” which okay good news! wen qing can bear children!

Now. Cons. 

for one thing the fact that you have a lack of options doesnt exactly mean every possible het pairing can have good chemistry even if you change circumstances enough. there comes to a point where certain pairings can only be really viable if one or both of them are ooc.

lets be honest im willing to bet that AT LEAST 80% of the reason cql introduced this ship was because they were not allowed to make the wangxian pair explicitly Together (and i dont even mean anything specifically sexual), and they needed SOME SORT of romance to feature in the story. xuanli doesnt count because theyre an established background ship,  the jiang parents dont count as romance, we aint talkin about the villain relationships, and lbr, mianmian already had a lot more signif in cql than mdzs. so it makes sense that they took the arguably most important male chara besides wangxian and made him have a crush on the most important female character that wasnt his SISTER. 

what im trying to say is that cql pulled that pairing out of a hat. if you look at canon at ALL i highly doubt there would ever have been feelings, just as there never were. we dont quite know the age dif but we know that wen qing was the older sister and wen ning might have been a bit younger? than the boys? cannot quite remember but we dont know if she was only a year or two older or if it was like. mingjue and huaisang. we dont know! and i canNOT see jiang cheng going for an older chick. also their personalities would clash So Much. she has older sis vibes and not the gentle kind like yanli. she snaps at wen ning’s mumbling and stuff a good couple times- you think she’d tolerate jiang cheng’s emotional immaturity? hah. 

this also kinda segues into my main point of: as depressing as it is that jiang cheng is forever alone unless you pair him off... he would honestly put whoever you pair him off with through hell. he’s not nice. so many jiang cheng stans like to argue that he’s a traumatized kid that was raised to channel his emotions through anger (and raises bitterness under his skin like an ugly puppy) but inside he has a heart of gold, and they’re... not exactly wrong! i mean- literally every younger chara is traumatized in some way. but... that doesn’t really... excuse the shit he’s pulled? as much as jiang cheng stans like to forget: jin guangyao was RIGHT when he said that jiang cheng’s insecurities got wei ying killed. his CLOSEST ALLY. 

tying back to wen qing we have their actual CANON interactions (or lack thereof). wen qing didn’t exactly protect wei ying and jiang cheng out of the goodness of her heart when lotus pier fell: she was protecting wen ning (her BROTHER) from the repercussions of his own actions by saving wei ying (and Jiang Cheng ig idk he was just there bUT YOUNG MASTER WEI-)

not QUITE sure why she agreed to doing the golden core transfer (maybe scientific curiousity? i mean she had an unproven medical theory and here was a volunteer) but it def wasnt For Jiang Cheng.

and then the next time she saw him? do you guys remember the next time she saw him? it’ was when jiang cheng came up to the burial mounds to kill wen ning’s corpse and tell wei ying to turn over the wens. 

KEEP IN MIND that jiang cheng KNOWS wen ning and qing SAVED HIS FUCKING ASS after lotus pier (not How but he KNOWS THIS) and yet he still tells wei ying to hand them over.

he makes wei ying choose between what amounts to the cultivation world and his morals. 

that does not a good healthy relationship make. also again their personalities would clash like so bad. i love wen qing way more but you have to admit her personality is super similar to madame yu’s. and we already agreed that jiang cheng was traumatized as a kid. im not saying fengmian didnt have a hand in it but you gotta admit a good amount was madam yu and her insecurites and accusations she piled on her son. and you wanna pair him up romantically with someone who won’t take his shit and smile? will call him out? HAH.

im not saying this because i think jiang cheng should be with a softer personalitied (guy) like lan xichen or wen ning or huaisang because god knows those pairings have their own issues. im just saying that in canon-verse all i can ship whole-heartedly is jiang cheng / therapy, but since there is not therapy in canon-verse, or even if there WAS then there’s no way he’d admit to needing it, then yeah he can stay single for all his bitter life. better that than making jiang parent relationship 2.0 like fuck.

(this of course means that in modern aus where he DOES get therapy i am Open)

also real quick but jiang cheng was NOT a good parent to jin ling and i will not take constructive criticism like sure he was better than the jiang parents and the lan parents but that is SUCH a low fuckin bar and it’s a fact that in chapter 9 jin ling literally thinks “if I can’t slice off her head with this blow, I will die here- death it is then!!” (taken gratefully from the exiled rebels scanlation) and that is NOT a healthy-minded child.

the only healthy minded children is like. jingyi. and probably sizhui. although i am not here for the way the lan sect raise children but sometimes you have to take what you can get.

also i want you to look me in the eye and tell me that wen qing could and would do anything besides throw down with someone that so much as looked at her brother wrong

because jiang cheng apparently decided to lay the blame for jin zixuan’s death at wen ning’s feet (which is incredibly ironic considering he blames wei ying for yanli’s death??? like i feel like he could stand to use his brain cells a bit more??) and repeatedly tried to kill him.

☆ personal comments: this is honestly one of my favorite fics...while it doesnt fit exactly the first thing you’re looking for (with him showing up/not being stopped...i mean he does show up...but he’s gotta plan some things out and recover before he shows up at koi tower); anyways there is definitely a lot of politics involved in this fic (from trying to form a new sect and an investigation going on with the wen remnants). i think you would enjoy it (or at least hope you will). I hope the author updates soon cause it has been a while, but its def long and will give you something to work through!

I havent seen anyone else do this and its been living rent free in my head for the past two weeks but Uh- reincarnation Au where Wei wuxian is born as mo xuanyu bc y Not!

Everything is pretty much the same up untill mo xuanyu is like 5 y/o where he is starting to get flashes of his memories

At first he asks his mother Who some of the more famous people are like jiang cheng and lan zhan, second miss mo doesnt know where her son heard about them but explains anyway, thinking her son might have gotten interested in cultivating

When jin guanshan comes to pick him up for cultivating and all that bs Wei ying remembers alot about his past, some gaps but a majority of It is there

However he learned to shut up about It

Once in the lanling jin sect he meets everyones favorite jin ling (Who is actually technically the older one here!)

And since its everyones favorite wei wuxian and Not the actual mo xuanyu some things will be different such as:

He’s pretty smart like his previous life and actually impresses his teachers with the things he know

He Also properly trains mo xuanyus body to be efficient at cultivating and gets pretty good at It!

He never falls for his half brother jin guanyao and gets kicked out!

While in the sect he becomes friends with jin ling and feels oddly protective of the boy even If he is technically younger

The twos relationship is quite similar to that of Wei wuxian and jiang cheng when they were younger

He’d probably Also refer to them all really informally once they’re all friends per usual Wei wuxian behaviour

Wei wuxian or mo xuanyu/rong as he’s know as relationship with the other juniors is great and they’re great friends and get along very well and all help tease jin ling

Wei would most likely resort to using demonic cultivation at one point or another and you guessed It home boy lan zhan recognizes It pretty much imediately.

Seeing as he and jiang cheng most likely see good chunk of his teen years bc of JL and the other juniors their heart strings would probably get pulled on ALOT

Would It end up in confrontation and most likely alot of angst? Hell Yeah!

(also wangjis got a kid now and you perhaps remember a toddler running around the burial mounds, and you listen to the lan clan go "oh yes its hanguang juns illegitimate son, mhm. his name is Lan Imissweiying" and you are like. HOW is anyone buying this dumb story)

Yeah now imagine you are lan zhan and There Is No More Joy In Your Life, Birth Is A Curse And Existence Is A Prison, and you leave your seclusion being still depressed as fuck, and theres that guy who basically kind of killed wei ying. and even if he didnt kill him he still, you know, attempted. so. and that guy is apparently now famous for hunting demonic cultivators for sport??? for who knows what purposes but rlly probably nothing good considering he's whipping them with sexy lightning whip. and you are like, hey, i am ALSO gonna hunt demonic cultivators. okay so like I said, I had some thought abt shl while I was at work and I was like... hmm.. why am I not as into this as I thought I'd be?? and the answer is guardian brainrot going strong but also idk wenzhou feel just off. Idk they kinda feel like the couple from color rush and I don't like color rush at all akjfksdlf. Like, idk, i KNOW that zzs is just brushing wkx away bc like, he's gonna die anyways and doesn't want to get close to someone and then die and leave them alone bc he knows how painful that is. And that's why he's like that to WKX but it just reads as like.. unbalanced. And ik they have some sorta past or whatever probably that zzs doesnt remember and the second he remembers he'll be like "you!!??" and it will all click and ik their relationship is more equal as the series goes on but yeah like even the soulmate moment in ep 8 felt just off yk. Like wkx is begging zzs to show him a little more consideration and zzs is like "idc man we're just friends" and wkx is just rlly hurt. Like, i get why zzs sees him as just a friend and also he doesn't want to get close bc he doesn't want to hurt himself or wkx but like idk... it just feels off. and idk exactly how to say why esp bc weilan was similar too. But i think the difference ultimately is the zyl was also obviously interested in Shen Wei and also SW rlly like concealed as best he could so it didn't feel so unbalanced but idk... its strange. I will keep watching and I'm sure I'll enjoy the show more as it goes on but tbh I rlly care more abt zzs interactions with the zcl and the other members of the window of heaven and wkxs interactions with Gu Xiang than I care abt their interactions with each other. Like the scene in ep 8 with zzs and han ying was sooooo interesting.. honestly the high light of the episode. ANON!!! HI HELLO I am thrilled anytime I have to talk about wangxian as parents because the visual is adorable 😩 (also they adopted another baby or well someone left a 9 month old baby on their doorsteps and it's accidental baby acquisition time)

As we've established lwj is definitely the dad who spoils his kid with gifts and wwx is the one who has a keep a check because lan zhan our kid does not need another set of the same wooden sword just because the shopkeeper said the wood was better?!! (this is mostly crack but I'm indulging myself here)

On a serious note (is it?) I feel like lwj and wwx would definitely place a bet on what their child's first word would be and wwx like 'its going to be me, he'll call me dad and lwj will be like 'No❤ it will be me and he'll call me baba'

wwx sneakily feeding their kid spicy food (once he's old enough) cause there's no way he'll be raising another kid on rabbit food. he definitely remembers a-yuan enjoying eating spice before (he didnt)

Family trips to Lotus Pier because jiang cheng will not miss another one of his nephew growing up without an uncle, no sir he will be the one to teach swimming doesnt matter if he's only 1, kids start learning early and lwj you need to stop glaring at me over the table I'm not gonna drown your kid while eating soup.

I'm taking liberties here and BIG BROTHER SIZHUI being his adorable self and playing with his younger sibling the way his dads used to and one day they find Sizhui and baby lan buried in a pile of rabbits together and the other time the kid's buried him in the soil you are the tiniest turnip he says to them.

The kid's first word turns out to be baba and wei ying pouts all day and lan zhan that smug bastard has a smug smile on his face but only for a little while cause he cant see wei ying pout and he feels bad.

You know, I thought Wei Ying’s longing for Lan Zhan in episode 1 was heartbreaking enough but then episode 2 was like ha bitch you thought and had Lan Zhan find him and grab his hand and just... not let go. Like seriously, there are kids staring at them and other sect cultivators, an undead bloodthirsty fellow that Wei Ying is trying to calm down with music - he plays with Lan Zhan’s hand still holding his and why is that making me so damn emotional?? - and LWJ just does... not let go of that hand.

And then I remembered that the last time he let go of his hand, Wei Ying... died. And now I will exit the club and go cry in the corner.

Is WWX still afraid of dogs in the WCZ sect leader au? Since, if I remember right, the reason why WWX was afraid of dogs bc of his time in the streets. So I guess JC's dogs won't go away and maybe they can bond over it?

... unless.......

Wei Changze takes the kids out to a town in Yunmeng so they can learn more about their territory (Wei Ying too this time because his wife threatened him with bodily harm if he didn't bring him) but is so focused on the Jiang siblings that he loses track of Wei Wuxian. He orders the Jiang men to fan out and search for his son and then continues on with the Jiangs. A half hour later a Jiang disciple comes running to him with an inconsolable Wei Ying, dirty with torn robes and a hastily bandaged arm. The dog bite doesnt look too severe so he tells the disciple to take his son home for treatment and a bath. It takes a lot longer to get the rest of the men and the other children ready to return.

When they return to Lotus Pier Jiang Cheng's dogs, his last gift from his father, are gone. His wife admits to sending them away easily, saying that Wei Ying had gone into a panic when he saw them. She refuses to say where she had them sent and poor Jiang Cheng is beside himself crying for his puppies. The boys argue but manage to make up with some help from Jiang Yanli in a few days. Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren are a different story.
