Almost finished Shadow and Bone (2 episodes left) but I just have thoughts I have to get out…

This season felt different, a little off. I don’t know, I like the Six of Crows series more than shadow and bone so that could be some of it, but the switching back and forth felt so jarring this time! I wish they either did whole episodes of Alina and then maybe at the end switched back to the crows for the next episode to be all the crows. I just would get so into a part of the story and then boom it took me right out cause it had to switch to someone else.

I like the season so far, I’m excited to see how they end it, and how it will hopefully lead into a third season. I just wish they either made two shows, one for shadow and bone and one for six of crows, or did half seasons where there was no switching. (Also hopefully next season we actually get the ice heist, and idk maybe more Mathias!)

WESPER PARALLEL

I JUST FOUND THIS PARALLEL IN SIX OF CROWS AND CROOKED KINGDOM THATS SO CUTE.

(Jesper shouldered his rifle. "Wylan earned his keep."

Wylan gave a little jump at the sound of his name "I did?"

Jesper's eyes traveled from the top of Wylan's red-gold curls to the tips of his toes and back again. "But I do charge a pretty steep fee."

Wylan flushed a magnificent shade of pink. "Well, hopefully the medik will be here to fix my ribs soon," He said as he headed back to the parlor.

"Yeah?"

"Yes," said Wylan, glancing briefly over his shoulder, his cheeks now red as cherries. "I'd like to make a down payment") -Crooked Kingdom pgs 507-508

It's a new day and I still cannot stop thinking about that wesper scene!!!

I am trying to focus and carry on with the day but all I can think about is how in Jesper's nightmare/flashback which was essentially a sweet dream where he got to meet his mom again and she was so proudly telling him how Jesper was a natural and he would turn spoons into rings and coins into keys ... AND THEN JESPER USED A COIN TO MAKE THE KEY FOR WYLAN!!!!

Jesper is actually no longer hiding what makes him special. He is sitting with his lover in his bed and having a heart to heart and doing magical stuff 🥹

*twinkling sounds when Jesper makes the key*

And then the way Jesper is flustered when Wylan thought the key is a coat hook and started overthinking his sweet gesture (he is so me!) 🥺

Wylan saying “that is the kindest thing that anyone has ever done for me.” with his starry eyes filled with surprise, gratitude, hope and perhaps even love (?) 🥹🥹🥹🥹

They are so used to having their armour up but in that moment they are just fearlessly themselves and trusting each other with their vulnerability. I am going to actually cry now :'",,) <3

I wonder if one day Jesper would again turn a spoon into a ring. Only that time it would be the most beautiful ring to ever exist because it's literally crafted with love for someone just as lovely and beautiful 🥹

i love jesper sososososo much. with all my heart. he means everything to me.

BUT HOLY SHIT I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HIM FOR THE WAY HE TREATED KUWEI.

kaz was pretty awful too but like that's just kaz so I'm not as upset by it. jesper was just mean.

Even when he's saying something not inherently mean to him. like his tone is so belittling it makes me wanna GAASFAHSHDAS

and like, i can forgive the teasing i guess, because that's kinda how jesper talks to everyone, including wylan. (it's a little different since kuwei is literally their hostage and they shut him in a tomb for weeks and then tried to sell him so kuwei probably wants nothing to do with them at that point, but he does end up having kinda a crush on jesper so maybe he didn't mind idk).

BUT OH MY GOD. when jesper said "those shu soldiers can smell us. YOUR father made that possible" I WANTED TO PUNCH HIM. kuwei watched his father die in front of him. parem was an experiment meant to help kuwei hide his powers. and then kuwei got dragged off and kept in the ice court for god fucking knows how long and was forced to make the formula for a drug that would massacre his own people. Jesper knows all of this and still decides to say that. As i said I love jesper but that moment makes me so mad at him.

then later in another jesper chapter, he internally says "The sooner Kuwei got on that boat, the better. The tomb was starting to feel crowded." KUWEI DOESNT WANNA FUCKING BE THERE?? literally leave him alone wtf did he do to you.

then in the entire black veil scene, jesper responds to almost everything kuwei says with some little dig at the fact that kuwei's dad made parem and everything is kuwei's fault to the point where kuwei is basically begging jesper for understanding and jesper dismisses him like annoyingly easily. I felt for kuwei so hard reading that scene. I wish we got at least one chapter from his POV just to know how he's feeling.

mostly i think jesper is just projecting his internalized grisha-phobia onto kuwei which i get is part of his character growth and stuff but it's just so unfair to kuwei. all kuwei is trying to do is relate to him and find some common ground on some level but jesper just acts like such a jerk. and when he kisses him and then just runs of and leaves him there... that was,,, like im not gonna act like jesper was 100% in the wrong for that situation because he wasn't but he definitely could have handled that situation better.

He also is probably doing it to impress kaz too because there's a lot of moments where the 2 of them gang up on kuwei like middle school playground bullies. Those parts probably infuriated me the most, because like... you kidnapped him. obviously he's still in a better situation than the ice court but i would at least expect jesper to have some sympathy.

but one thing that really gets me is how the fandom acts like wylan and kuwei are enemies and like, wylan despises kuwei. that's just so out of character for everyone involved. wylan and kuwei are the closest to being actual friends than kuwei + anyone else. jesper is the one who hates kuwei. I hate when people project their kuwei hate onto the crows but at least do it to the one who's actually shown being mean to him. when wylan said that "push you in the canal" thing he was running on broken ribs, a dead friend and like a half hour of sleep so he would have said that to literally anyone.

this was a really messy and unstructured tangent but i just really needed to get this out there. lmk your thoughts

pt. 2 of that wesper college roommates au that nobody asked for (ITS SO LATE SORRY)

the last straw was kuwei. 

wylan is having breakfast when jesper returns from his date. 

“morning.” wylan took in jesper’s untucked shirt and messy hair and hoped he wasn’t flushing. 

jesper groaned as he stole wylan’s mug of coffee out of his hand and took a sip. “saints, my hangover. mistakes may have been made last night.” 

wylan took his mug back. “get your own coffee.” then despite his desire to ignore the marks on jesper’s collarbone, he asks. “new guy?”

“yeah, you might know him, actually. kuwei? he’s in your year.”

wylan can’t help it when his face drops. “kuwei yul-bo?” 

if jesper sees wylan’s obvious annoyance, he doesn’t say anything. wylan in fact did know kuwei yul-bo, a chemistry major at the top of his department. wylan had wanted to be a chemistry major but had settled for a minor after long fights with his father. kuwei, who was wylan’s age, was also as popular as he was smart. wylan couldn’t help but be dismayed. it seemed as if jesper went for everyone who was taller, better looking, smarter, more popular than wylan. every date reminded him that he wasn’t the one. he wasn’t even one of the very many. 

and because it’s kuwei, someone so different yet alike to wylan, it only makes it worse when jesper dresses up to go out the very same night. 

wylan raised an eyebrow from where he was reading a book on the couch. “a new date so soon?”

“nah, kuwei again. it’s his roommate’s birthday and he invited me out.” 

wylan slammed his book shut. “have you learned nothing from this morning? ghezen.” 

he regretted it immediately because jesper’s face suddenly looks funny before it hardens. “what’s stuck up your ass this fine night?” 

wylan was suddenly ashamed. what was he doing? there was nothing wrong with jesper going out except the fact that wylan’s heart broke a little each time. and that wasn’t jesper’s fault, it was wylan’s. 

“nothing, sorry. homework, stress.” wylan stood up and walked to his room before jesper could ask him any questions. he was convinced it was clear as day on his face sometimes. “enjoy your night.” 

hot, angry tears welled up in his eyes as wylan shut the door behind himself. what was wrong with himself these days? he hears jesper let out a breath and can imagine him pacing. then, though he can tell his roommate hesitates, their front door opens and then closes as jesper decides to leave. 

wylan let the tears fall.

wylan was still tossing and turning when he heard the doorbell ring mere hours before sunrise. he braced himself for a drunk jesper before opening the door, only to be greeted by drunk jesper and a tipsy kuwei yul-bo. wylan’s first thought was that he was too sober for this.

“hey! i’m kuwei yul-bo, jesper’s friend. uh wylan, right?

“that’s me.” wylan muttered. he took in the sight of jesper, whose shirt was only half buttoned up, long limbs sprawled across kuwei’s shoulders. he looked like he was barely holding himself up.

kuwei nodded towards the couch. “can i..?”

“oh, yes.” wylan opened the door, still in disbelief that he had kuwei in his living room. he watched as kuwei dumped jesper onto the couch. the unconscious boy immediately began snoring, legs too long for the couch.

kuwei laughed, putting his hands in his pocket. “he drank a lot today. was riled up more than usual for some reason.” he elbowed wylan. wylan blanched.

“it’s like he never learns from the morning before, right?” kuwei snorted, not unkindly.

wylan pressed his lips together. “right.”

before he could figure out a way to ask kuwei to leave without sounding rude, kuwei made for the door to his relief. and because wylan van eck does have basic manners, he clears his throat at the door.

“uh, thanks for getting him home safely. good night.” wylan said.

“no problem!” kuwei turned to leave before hesitating and turning over his shoulder. “you should come out with jesper next time. i think he would really like that.” 

he was gone before wylan could even make sense of the sentence. 

(wylan makes sure to leave aspirin and water on their coffee table on his way to bed, just to make sure jesper doesn’t have too much of a headache in the morning. if he lingers in the living room, stares at jesper’s relaxed sleeping figure, and thinks about how much would easier it would be if jesper wasn’t so perfect, nobody knows. at least, not tonight.)

Wylan Van Eck rant

SIX OF CROWS & CROOKED KINGDOM SPOILERS

when I first read SOC and found out Wylan didn't have any pov chapters I was so sad even though I understand why. But it would have been so interesting seeing things from his point of view especially his introductory scene and the Van Eck exchange at the end. He's such an interesting character (as are the other crows) but whats most interesting is seeing him adapt. We know from the get go he is extremely intelligent and we see even more so through his chapters in CK. For example he and Kaz are the only characters who don't reveal the plan from their perspective. Yet while he's intelligent he has also been sheltered from barrel life up until that point, making the others compare him to a child. side bar rq but I HATE it when people infantilize his character but also peoples only defense is one line from the book("we could wake them up") Its not like the other crows actually see him as a child they mostly see him as inexperienced in barrel life and that viewpoint obviously changes. He's not a baby but he's also not a mini Kaz Brekker even if they do have parallels. you can be kind and have good morals without being a child and Kaz isn't the only crow who can be unhinged(Like when Inej laughed then head butted Van Eck in the face lmao). Anyway that got off track but yeah Wylan is his own character and personally my fav out of all the crows. Another reason why is because of his actions, becoming bold at random moments then shy the next he is me fr. The things I would do for a book where he is one of the main characters (He technically is in SOC but come on we all know kaz and Inej get the most chapters) anyway he is just a very cool character

I am actually crying after watching that scene for like 15 times straight (gay). Everything in that scene just pulls at my heart strings.

Sipping tea (I am assuming it's tea)!!!! Comfy clothes!!! The way they are so comfortably sharing each other's space!!!

The way Wylan opens up to Jesper and tells him that Ketterdam has never really felt like a home. I haven't read the books yet but from the fics I do know that he has had an abusive childhood and his own house surely could have never felt quite like home either.

The way Wylan tries to be so nonchalant while saying “so of course I came back” and then the way he says with conviction that there's no one better than him!!!! I am so proud of him 🥹

And then the way Jesper is listening to him so intently and then makes that key with the coin he was playing around with in his other hand and the twinkling sounds in the background 🥹

It's so obvious that it's a key but Wylan does not assume and asks Jesper what the key opens. The way Wylan is a bit unsure and then hopeful but still processing the information that yes indeed that key is the key to the kingdom inside Jesper's room that could be their home :"",,,)

And I cannot even process that kiss right now. ...

I am just so emotional right now. Wylan and Jesper and their love means so much to me 💙💜💖🫶🏼
