Ok, it's been a quite a while since I've done one of these, so buckle up. I've got a big one for you to today:
Tumblr media
Izzy Moonbow's sparkle sense.
Now, my opinion on G5 as a whole is... not great. The generation had a whole lotta interesting ideas that were either executed poorly or never really explored.
In the case of Izzy's talent for seeing sparkle, after the movie, it's mentioned very little and rarely with any real story or character intent. (Not saying all traits of a character must do this. Some can be charming and lovable without having much of a point. This isn't one of those cases.)
-but I like stories, and I like Izzy, so let me cook for a sec.
The first time Izzy ever mentioned "Sparkle" was with Sunny on their way to Zephyr Heights.
"You know, your Sparkle? Yours is... lavender."
Two things:
One, the more obvious point: Sparkle might be alluding to Twilight Sparkle, the literal pony embodiment of magic.
Two, Izzy notes that Sunny's Sparkle is a specific color, meaning that, whatever she's seeing isn't just a sparkly something... it's a COLORFUL sparkly something.
Now, let's rewind back to G4 for a bit.
What's sparkly, colorful, and magically comes from ponies?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's right. Their magical Aura.
Izzy can see the literal magical aura of other ponies, regardless of their race. (As opposed to G4, where it was only clear what color unicorns and Alicorns magical aura was because.... well, yeah.)
This could've been EXTREMELY interesting.
How, you may ask?
Allow me to demonstrate.
In G4, the color of a pony's Aura usually followed a rule: It had to match either their eyes or their cuite mark.
Tumblr media
Twilight's aura was hot pink/fushia, which matched her cutie mark.
Tumblr media
Rarity's aura was a crystal blue, which matched both her eyes AND her cutie mark.
Other examples include, but are not limited to:
Sweetie Belle - light green = her eyes
Celestia - sulight yellow = her cutie mark
Shining Armor - hot pink/fushia - his cutie mark
Lyra Heartstrings - golden yellow = her eyes + cutie mark
Starlight Glimmer - cyan = cutie mark
-and so on, and so forth.
Now, going back to Izzy, she told Sunny her Sparkle was the color lavender.
Tumblr media
Notice how that doesn't really seem to follow the rule.
However, doesnt that specific color remind you of anypony?
Tumblr media
Sunny's magic being the color of Twilight Sparkle had SO many implications.
Was she physically related to Twilight Sparkle in some way?
Was the color just a neat little hint that Sunny was basically the next in line to fill Twilight's shoes?
Plot concepts, people. Plot concepts!
Having a pony who can see the magic emanating off of other ponies is tremendous for telling us things about other characters and their possible role in the story.
-AND G5 DID NOTHING WITH THIS.

For personal reasons im gonna ignore the last 10 ish minutes of season two episode 8. it's not canon its a fucked up fan fiction that someone wrote :)
⚠️Season two episode eight spoilers⚠️
Genuinely tho why the fuck did David Jenkins think that THAT was an appropriate send-off for izzy? To be a representation of the metaphorical death of blackbeard? That's it??? That's all he was in the end? His death taking blackbeard with him leaving just Edward?
My question is why couldn't he have lived and his "send off" be becoming Captain izzy hands aiding Zheng and company in revenge against prince ricky? He could have lived and taken on the role of "blackbeard" while leaving Ed and Stede to be innkeepers, that being the "death" of blackbeard. Or if Izzy had to die why couldn't the death of blackbeard be literal? Killing blackbeard and his first mate Izzy Hands, leaving not a trace of blackbeard leaving stede and company to either continue piracy or split up. I'll never be able to watch season two the same way knowing they, traumatized, abused, disabled, and grew Izzy all for him to die as a pawn for Ed's story. That was fucking soul crushing.
It wasn't even a character arc for Izzy, his own death. It was an obstacle for FUCKING ED. So everything leading up to this point, all of his growth, his acceptance within the crew as the unicorn, the abuse from Kraken!Blackbeard, the finding of himself, ALL OF THAT WAS FOR FUCKING NOTHING???
This character meant so much to me for so many reasons. He was an angry, traumatized man who was clinging to an ideal of someone who'd changed. As he grows as a character he realizes that Blackbeard doesn't exist anymore and what's left is Edward Teach, the man he fell for, his best friend. He realizes he's accepted by the crew of the revenge, and in turn realizes he's finally part of something again. His growth as an older queer disabled man from a hardened jerk who couldn't let go of blackbeard was beautiful to watch. And they cut it short. Izzy spoke to me as a character, watching him die in such an, undignified way killed me inside. I have very little in common with izzy yes. He's a 50 something heavily traumatized disabled man living in the (though not historically accurate) 1700's , im a queer, able bodied, teen from colorado in the 21st century who rants on tumblr for fun. But watching episode 6 in particular, knowing what he was in season 1, watching him fearful to be himself then be accepted beautifully when he started singing, accepted as their unicorn dressing in drag, performing during Calypso's birthday, It spoke to me. That process of being terrified of being yourself then finally finding the group that loves you for you. I related to that point in his story so much. I was and still in a sense am terrified of being myself. Im a weird little gay trans guy who's into weird niches. Seeing that struggle in a character and watching his acceptance resonated with me and meant the world and beyond to my little queer heart.
And another thing, Jenkins didn't even fucking tell Con that izzy would be killed when he signed onto ofmd 2. He broke the news halfway through FILMING. A character that meant that much to both Con and the fanbase was killed off to be nothing more than a CHARACTER ARC FOR EDWARD. And the actor who brought Izzy Hands to life was none the wiser until he'd already agreed to play Izzy again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now knowing that the story might go on without Izzy, without Con constantly reposting fanart of izzy, without his sass, without his vaguely nsfw quips. It makes the idea of season three less appetizing, for lack of a better word. Izzy was a key part of why i loved season 2 and was willing to excuse how rushed it was.
That's my 2 cents about that absolute bullshit ending to Izzy's story.

Izzy's Gravy Basket
While discussing Izzy's looming end of season extravaganza (apparently Con's acting is so good we're all gonna lose our minds) on this poll, and maybe in connection with my episode 8 speculations here, @nicelimegreen put the thought of Izzy's own personal gravy basket in my mind - and I love it so much I have to write about it.
While Ed and Stede already let us see into their minds (and it was fascinating!), we haven't had anything like that from Izzy. And true to my firm belief that OMFD is a story about three central fuckups, an Izzy dream scene/hallucination would be absolutely perfect for the season finale to bring everything together.
Also, the unhinged enthusiasm of people who have seen all the episodes, specifically relating to Con's performance in episode 8, leads me to believe that there's something dramatic coming.
And why not Izzy's own purgatory?
I know, this makes it 3 death scenes in one season (plus 2 toe snips, an amputation and possibly torture?) which I would find a bit much even in hurt/no comfort fanfic, but it kinda is that kind of show, isn't it? (and I love it)
The fascinating question is, of course, what would Izzy's purgatory look like? (Please reblog and discuss, I'm going crazy with anticipation in general and about Izzy's conclusion specifically)
Let's look at our blueprint: Ed's gravy basket
Central conflict: self-hatred, fear of being a bad person, lack of self control, unloveable, no one cares if you live or die Location: beach, hut, cliffs Representation of self: Captain Hornigold, retired Pulling him out of it: Mermaid Stede <3 (I messed all of this up. I'll never leave you. You're safe.)
For Izzy, in my opinion, the central conflict is "What am I?" (from initially, "What am I to you?"). His arc this season is becoming a well-rounded person who can stand alone (first step: get a unicorn leg) and isn't (co-)dependent on his captain.
But that might not be all there is. Ed's death was directly connected to his conflict. I can't see how Izzy's death is caused by him becoming a more realized person.
Except... maybe this is a conflict between self-actualization and self-sacrifice. I've said it before, I sense a lot of guilt about something in his (and Ed's) past. Something about others paying the price for your ambitions (Letting someone die or driving them to suicide? Killing someone you love?).
Izzy spent a lifetime in the shadow of another man, propping him up (as best he could). Maybe there's a reason for this level of self-abandonment?
The location could be many places really - we know nothing of Izzy's past. It has to be quiet and introspective though, so I suggest a lake in some lonely place (Edward Teach born on a beach, Israel Hands born in the Midlands). Or a ship - because, at his core, Izzy is first and foremost a sailor.
Much more interesting is the person who'll be there with him. Keeping in line with our blueprint, it could be someone from Izzy's past.
For Ed, it was his feared captain who traumatized him deeply but also influenced large parts of his outwards persona, his conception of piracy and appropriate pirate behaviour. These are parts Ed hates about himself and that make him unhappy, and it ties in with his central conflict of course.
But for Izzy it could be the exact opposite. If it truly is a person from Izzy's past, it's very difficult to speculate who (that's why we need a scene like this - we know nothing about the fucker!).
I all comes down to how Izzy sees himself. Contrary to Ed, I don't think Izzy's conflict is self-hatred, so the person representing his self won't be someone Izzy hates.
I also don't see someone threatening - it is more likely someone in need of guidance, someone vulnerable and "weak". Maybe someone who wasn't strong and able enough to do their fucking job (and Izzy should have done it for him, then).
So who could that person be? It could be someone who was dependent on Izzy a long time ago, maybe someone he let down because he didn't protect/guide them properly. The person could be connected to the spade (traitor's?) tattoo or the ring on his cravat. It could also be a young Ed, who Izzy tried to take under his wing (for the record, I do firmly believe that Izzy taught Ed quite a few things, maybe not all he knows though).
He could also be alone 😢
I don't think Izzy wants to die like Ed did (he's doing quite well right now), but we've got 3 episodes left - who knows what'll happen. The guilt could play into it, or a feeling of this is how it was supposed to happen, I've paid my debts.
In any case, right at the end, someone will come and pull him out.
In spite of the crew being Izzy's love now, they've already saved him in Ep4. I think this time it should be Ed who comes for Izzy. I can also see Ed and Stede both being explicitly needed (Izzy has two hands).
I think there's a possibility Izzy won't drown though - maybe he'll burn in a wood/house/ship fire. A self-imposed fiery death in hell seems fitting with the guilt-theme somehow. But that's just me probably. Water works perfectly well too.
For the rescue, I am struggling to come up with something even half as perfect as a mermaid, I mean Ed and Stede can always ride in on a unicorn (bit of a double meaning there, but whatever), but that doesn't feel quite right - maybe Ed with a shark's tail? Someone else will have a brilliant idea I hope!
Going with Izzy's assumed conflict of self-actualization vs. self-sacrifice (and protection of others), the thing he needs to hear to bring him back would be something like "it wasn't your fault", "be happy" and "I/we want you in our lives but be your own person" (just a little more poetic maybe).
Conclusion: Izzy's purgatory will tell us something (harrowing I'm sure) about his past. Con's acting will be off the charts. We will want to thank him face-to-face (I've wanted to do that from the start, so...)
But Ed or Ed and Stede both will bring Izzy back - he'll thank them in his usual charming way and they'll live happily ever after <3.
Hope this wasn't too scrambled! Thoughts?

thinking about the marks we see on Izzy.
x tattoo
swallow tattoo
spade tattoo
back scars
forehead scar
we don't even see his (bare) leg post-amputation and i think that's significant. izzy is a character who is covered up - he has one glove on at all times, always with his cravat on, even when we finally see him shirtless he has the unicorn leg on and from a narrative perspective he is not exposed. yes he gives away hints of deeper feelings when he asks what ed said about him specifically but that's it.
i feel like it's significant that what the marks we see on this character are deliberate, intentional marks that relate somehow to piracy/ed/blackbeard.
the x tattoo - ed signs his name with an X. Does that mean he was the one who tattooed izzy/that is why izzy has this as a tattoo? No, canon never confirms the origin of the tattoo. (as far as I remember anyway) but it's a deliberate choice that we're meant to notice. it could be interpreted that izzy is ed's, simple as that , or it could be that izzy is dedicated to ed without knowing the true meaning of who ed is, seeing as it's not even his name, or it could be interpreted as izzy is loyal to whatever version of ed that ed decides to finally be.
the swallow tattoo - again nothing confirmed in canon, but we do know it's a sign of sailing 5000 nautical miles AND ed has a matching tattoo. it could just be a coincidence and no doubt was a common tattoo for sailors/pirates, but izzy has so few tattoos i think this is another sign that we are meant to interpret.
the spade tattoo - it's never focused on at all in the show. historically i believe it was meant to be a bad luck symbol, ensuring the bearer would be killed/buried at sea. izzy thinks the only retirement for pirates is death. dedication to a life of piracy perhaps? or intended as a sign he will die being a pirate and not betraying his peers and testify against them for the sake of a pardon, like a lot of pirates (and the historical izzy hands) did.
back scars - never commented on and hardly seen. possibly due to the lack of time the writers had in season 2, but also very in character for izzy: there's a lot of history to him and to him and ed that we don't get to see. we don't know what the scars are from - lashings, a whip, but we don't know the why. and ed, whose history we see, has no such scars on his back. it's a hint at something. but izzy doesn't tell stede in the shirtless scene, and i think it's very in-character that he would never expose something to the world if he thought he'd have to discuss something he didn't want to talk about.
the forehead scar - the scar that remains prominent all through season 2, that we see in his death scene even. if i recall correctly this is also the only wound/scar/injury that is shown on any character in the show more than once and is shown in various stages of healing.
just.... like, i am aware that izzy hands is a character who gets mixed reception in this fandom, but whatever your thoughts on him, it means something that we see his X tattoo, his missing leg (by way of the unicorn leg), the forehead scar and his swallow tattoo, that the camera or writing doesn't have to pick them out specifically for them to be noticeable. we see him barefoot once and he's not hiding what blackbeard has done to his foot. we see him earlier looking almost happy that blackbeard is committing violence against him (note- this does NOT mean that the experience was okay, not traumatic, not seriously fucked up.) it means something.
it means something that the visible marks life leaves upon izzy are all things that tie back to ed. it means something that the entire costume of his character is inextricably tied to his captain.

this is a feelings-about-Izzy-Hands post.
you know how he's the unpalatable queer one?
the one whose time is over?
I relate so hard to these things. I am not a nice gay. I am not ever going to appear to advise you on an outfit and your relationship or whatever. I am the opposite of uwu, which seems to be the trending queer aesthetic.
also, I'm a transsexual, which is something I have been told no longer exists or should exist -- the time for that is over, we're all doing something else. (I am well aware there are still many transsexuals and I am not personally the last unicorn, but I've been told I shouldn't be what I am enough times that the message I'm outdated has definitely sunk in.)
enter Izzy Hands, a mean-as-fuck gay man doing shit that's over now and finding a family even though he's not an uwu homosexual and even though he's out of date. can you imagine?
so, you know, that's part of the Izzy thing for me.

Re: #49, #53, and probably a lot more.
Making Izzys Development Less of a Shock:
Izzy is protective of his crew and he doesn't see the Revenge crew as his until season 2. When Jim and Frenchie are crew, he protects them as well. I dont think he had a redemption arc, that shift mixed with the "bottle it up" logic of characters like Frenchie and the "we dont get apologies" logic of characters like Archie means they were comfortable enough with him to trauma bond.
Revenge Crew: when asked in s1 ep 4, Izzy tells Ed the plan is to treat the Revenge crew like every other ship they have taken by making them fix the ship and then killing them. He also tells the crew they dont get food when they have been invaded. So from his pov this is a normal day with normal-ish captives. We are never given reason to believe Ed ever tells him otherwise.
Blackbeard Crew: Our only look into how the Blackbeard crew see him comes from Fang and Ivan. In s1 ep2, we hear Ivan tell Fang he should tell Izzy he doesnt like it when Izzy pulls his beard, implying Ivan at least thinks that would be safe to do and maybe even result in it not happening again. In ep 4, Izzy is yelling at Ed about the 7 men they lost saving Stede. In ep5, we see Fang panic when he thinks Ed is about to catch him slacking off and letting Lucius sketch him, but when he finds out its Izzy he relaxes. In ep6, they both go to Izzy to question why they havent followed protocol and killed everyone yet. This shows a fairly open relationship with their first mate. From what we see, they are comfortable being honest with him and trust him enough to question plans.
He is a dick when he takes over as captain, but the tasks he has the Revenge crew doing seem to be sailing related and we dont see him punish anyone until Wee John disrespects him. Was it good and was he right? No. But the punishment isnt violent, he seems to be trying to force them into being "proper" pirates. Then he strands them on that island, but they were rescued and after seeing the trauma crew I'm guessing they were less angry about being stranded. It's also possible they blame Ed for that.
In season 2, Izzy is back to being the go between for Ed and the BB crew. Jim and Frenchie are part of his crew now and he isnt pretending to be captain, so hes less of a dick and more of a buffer from Blackbeard. They have noticed that Ed is taking his toes, but they all seem relatively unharmed physically, creating the beginnings of a trauma bond. They also feel comfortable enough with him to question orders. Then when Ed starts pointing a gun at them, Izzy says something to get the gun pointed at himself instead of them or Ed himself. Jim's "hes our dick" explanation also implies they know everything is better when the crew cares about eachother.
As soon as Izzy is seemingly out of the picture, Ed does everything he can to ensure they will all die in that storm. And tries to make Jim and Archie to fight to the death. But Izzy steps in again and stops Ed. This would strengthen the trauma bond even more.
From what I can tell, Jim, Frenchie, Archie, and Fang and also Lucius have been through to much to be bothered by someone being a dick. Lucius can still be snarky, but he has bigger problems. The BB crew watched Izzy take a bullet and get toes cut off voluntarily and continue to stand between them and Blackbeard.
The rest of the Revenge crew either have someone they love on that ship or, frankly, dont really care about Izzy. And Izzy hits rock bottom and accepts that this is his new crew, theoretically resulting in him treating them a bit better.
I assume the New Unicorn note is the BB crews idea. The rest just want the trauma group to calm down a bit so I can see them agreeing to any team building activity if it helps the others build trust again. When we see the leg being made Jim is covered in gold paint, Fang and Frenchie are putting the last nail in.
TLDR: you dont see a redemption arc because he didnt get one. It's just the perfect storm of him being slightly less of a dick, a few key characters trauma bonding with him, and the rest not really caring about him or getting screen time. From his side they are crew now so hes less of a dick.
I'm sorry if this reads like headcanons, I tried to put episodes in to explain but it's all from my memory and it is very late. I hope it helps make the beginning of s2 less of a shock for someone.

Izzy and Alphabittle theory
So far awhile now I have thought about the relate between Izzy and  Alphabittle.  this is mainly due to 3 points.  1) they are the only unicorns who are not depressed. 2) Izzy seems to knows Alphabittle well from her reaction before the dance competition.  3)  Alphabittle chased Izzy to Maretime bay.
Now all this made me think they have some sort of past.  Now this theory is passed on my theory that Izzy is an orphan.  here is the full theory.
What if Alphabittle is like a guardian/friend/brother figure to Izzy.  I think when Izzy was young she wondered into Bridlewood and Alphabittle and his family kind of began to watch over her since she was alone.  Now at this point Izzy already thought differently from other unicorns being happier and not as biased to the other pony kinds.  Because Alphabittle took on a big brother role he helped her “fit in” As in taught her what unicorns are like and thought.  Izzy went with it and was ok for awhile.  She even played games with Alphabittle often without any prizes. Then she found Sunny’s letter and began to really question what she was taught.  Because of this she and Alphabittle’s friendship began to strain.  Kind of like how Hitch told Sunny that he can't associate with someone who is always causing trouble, Alphabittle said something similar to Izzy but unlike Sunny and Hitch the friendship ended, mostly.  He still looked out for her when needed but they stopped hanging out.  After years of thinking Izzy finally traveled to Maretime bay.
this is a detail thought on my theory but the bottom line is that izzy and  Alphabittle are like a foil (I think this is the right term) to Sunny and Hitch.
so what do you think?  Do you think Izzy and a Alphabittle were friends, family, or nothing at all and they just knew eachother?

Thoughts on My Little Pony: A New Generation
The show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is special to me for it’s portrayal of autistic coded characters, and I’d argue it was a pivotal phenomenon in autistic culture. It has since completed it’s run, and the pilot for it’s successor just aired yesterday in the form of the movie My Little Pony: A New Generation. Let’s make it clear from that from get go it’s apparent that this show is not going to be as significant to the autistic community as the previous show was as all it’s characters have less autistic traits than those in the original show. We’ve had our time in the limelight, so it’s fine that now the focus is placed on a different, but I’m still going to miss what we had.
It makes sense that this show is different from the previous one in this regard, as thematically this show focuses on cross-group relational problems rather than in-group ones like the previous show, which is more of a concern for neurotypicals than it is for autistic people since they have a much stronger in-group bias. We can see this change in theme from the first scene, where we see Sunny Starscout, the new lead who kinda feels like a neurotypical version of Twilight Sparkle, interprets Twilight Sparkle as being sent to make friends more as a diplomatic mission between pony races that a personal assignment to develop her social skills. Sunny longs to befriend other pony races (unicorns and pegasi, since shes’s an earth pony) and is only ostracized because such beliefs are considered to be heterodox in her community, contrasting with Twilight who never say the point in pursuing friendship with anyone. While intelligent, well-educated, and a little bit geeky, she lacks Twilight’s intensity while maintaining a social intuition that Twilight lacks, and so on.
There is one character though appears to be neurodivergent, if not autistic coded. That is Izzy Moonbow, the unicorn who Sunny befriends. What intrigues me about Izzy Moonbow is that despite being the comic relief she may actually be the most complex character in the movie, with her deeper character appearing almost as an inversion of her superficial presentation. For example, she appears oblivious to her surroundings, but proves to often be the first to come up with a practical solution from their environment, while bubbly she was socially isolated, and while her descriptions of other pony’s “luminescence” (aura) suggests a New Age archetype, she actually contrasts with other unicorns in the show in that she is NOT superstitious. In particular, she also initially appeared to be the opposite of autistic, but it was later shown that she finds it difficult to relate to her peers because she processes the world around her in a different way then they do.
Izzy Moonbow does not appear to be autistic coded as she has been shown to be quite responsive to the emotions of other ponies. There was at least one gag where she directly reacted to another pony’s facial expression, and she appears to describe other’s emotional states and personalities using can colorful metaphors. However, she also demonstrates limited understanding of what is appropriate behavior in various social contexts, so maybe autism is more plausible than it initially appears. One wonders if maybe her descriptions of luminescence is not a metaphor, but her attempting to describe how she experiences the emotions of others, which she is unable to describe in the way neurotypicals do because she doesn’t experience them in the same way.
Let’s get to the essence of her character. Officially her gimmick is that she likes crafts. However, her crafts are shown to be of remarkable mechanical complexity. She is not just an artist, but a tinker, and the only reason that aspect is masked is because her presentation is more feminine than the stereotype of this archetype. The tinker archetype is closely associated fictional depictions of autism, often under the guise of being more interested in machines than people. That description certainly doesn’t apply to Izzy, but it also isn’t an accurate description of autism, and in many depictions of the autistic tinker they are shown as emphasizing with machines as a result of being rejected by their organic peers despite longing to be accepted by them. Izzy is a bit a different, instead desiring to show her contraptions to friends she never had, but there is still a common thread of social desire persisting after rejection.
There is another link between the tinker archetype and autism that also applies to Izzy. The tinker is highly intelligent, but they find it difficult to express this intelligence through words, and instead demonstrate it through their ability to work with their hands. This certainly applies to some autistic people, though others are the opposite. As for Izzy, her comments tend to confuse others, but she has shown to be very competent at solving problems when she can go straight to using her hooves and horn, such as when she created a bridge from a tree while the rest of the group was complaining about being unable to cross a chasm. I think this is most of all what gets to the essence of Izzy’s character. She does not see the world like others do, but it cannot be denied that her perspective if just as valid because she proves it is through what she does.
Many people have compared Izzy Moonglow to Pinkie Pie, both being social comic characters who are very obviously neurodivergent, but I find Izzy Moonglow to be a much more realistic depiction of someoen who is neurogivergent, while Pinkie Pie is more just a comic character without depth. Both would be difficult to label with any real-world disorder, but while the reason for Pinkie Pie is because there simply is nothing beneath the surface connecting her diverse behaviors, with Izzy it’s because she’s meant to be a individual with personal depth rather than checking of a list of traits. I also wonder if some of the difficulty in identifying what is going on comes from the path that she has a very feminine presentation, but her way of processing things has traditionally been associated with males, and thus sexism in the psychiatric community would lead to them failing to identify her underlying thought processes. That’s certainly the case for many autistic women, and it could very well extend to someone like Izzy.
That’s all my thoughts about how autism and neurodiversity relate to this incarnation of My Little Pony for now. There is going to be a full series following the movie, so I’m looking forward to watching it, and particularly seeing more of Izzy. Depending on how she’s portrayed in episodes I may even decide to give her an actual profile. As for now though, I just think it’s really interesting how both Izzy Moonglow and Twilight Sparkle are purple unicorns who can ambiguously be interpreted as being autistic, but have completely different personalities. Izzy is breaking new ground, as while Twilight Sparkle’s personality was pretty common for fictional depictions of autistic males prior to her being a female instance of it, Izzy’s is one that hasn’t been depicted much at all, and I wonder if any autistic girls relate to her in a way they haven’t related to characters before. So even while the show has a whole is less neurodiversity focused then the previous one, it still has something in it for us, and that can be enough.

My MLP Gen 5 movie review and hope for the future.
SPOILER WARNING!!!! Lol...
If you haven't seen the MLP Gen 5 movie please do so, and not just because there are spoilers ahead.
First off I can't tell you how much I love this movie. It's well made and written, the music is catchy, and the story speaks to the viewers without being preachy. Each character is relatable and loveable.
The movie was adorable, well animated and the voice actors amazing. Above all the animation was so amazing it alone carried the story where it sometimes faltered. The story was a bit generic and the plot twists weren't exactly hard to see coming. Yet it was thoughtful and each expression of each pony was carefully thought out. From the main 5 characters each having their very own mannerisms to unforgettable facial expressions.
I think they successfully brought MLP back by not only adding a male character who isn't toxic, i.e. Hitch. But by adding a girl character that isn't super feminine but also doesn't shy away from cute stuff, i.e. Zipp. A character whose love for flying is so pure it shines as bright as a rainbow.
This brings me to the characters and what I hope to see happen to each of them. As well as what Element of harmony I think each represents.
Starting with my fav and now spirit animal, Zipp!
Anyone who knows me knows I adore Rarity. She was always my fav, but I really identify with Zipp. This is amazing because my preconceptions going into this movie were that Zipp was going to be a Rainbow Dash copy, and she isn't!
We were comparing her to Rainbow dash, not only the cool style she has and her love of flying but honestly. Between Rainbow and Zipp, I like Zipp better because she's not like Rainbow. My favorite moments with Rainbow in OG series were when she wasn't all about flying, but instead, the episodes about her love of a book series were my favorite things about her.
Sure Rainbow loved flying, obnoxiously so at times which was her character. A confidant sometimes snarky character, and we love her for it. But Zipp, Zipp didn't grow up flying. Her love for it is almost pure compared to Rainbow's love.
Zipp had to learn other ways to glide, or imitate flying. Zipps pure joy at suddenly being able to fly is adorable. However with her character. I could see her spending days never touching the ground just because she'd be afraid she'd never get up again.
Zipp has insecurities that Rainbow doesn't have, and it's mostly because of how she was raised in the castle. Hiding the fact that she can't fly that she had to use wire. Her mother loved her but Zipp always comes second best to her sister. Rainbow didn't have that Rainbow was raised flying and told how good she was, that helped make her the confidant person she was.
In fact Zipps mother showed her love to her sister more than for Zipp. Who honestly seems fine with that because her joy in life is flying. Though it be nice to see in the future a mother daughter bonding about how she wants to be treated a bit better by her mother. To be listened to and not shut down. Like she had been in the movie.
Zipp knows everything about flying as shown on her calk board in the movie. Rainbow never really had that spark of passion. Zipp is more insecure in herself, so basically Zipp isn't Rainbow and I love her.
Now as for where her story may lead. The Wonderbolts! We know them we love them and Rainbow was one of them.
Zipp only knows about Wonderbolts from a photo and probably some of the history she's been told. In fact, I could see her wanting to be one just not in the same way Rainbow did. Rainbow wanted to be one to prove she was the best. Zipp doesn't have that kind of view.
Mostly because they don't exist anymore. They more than likely were disbanded or rebranded when no one could fly. I could see Zipp having a mission to start the team up herself, not because of the status or the idea that Wonderbolts are the best of the best. She'd more than likely start it make friends all in an effort to share the love of flying with everyone. I doubt all ponies who can fly will try to fly. Whether out of fear or lack of confidence in themselves. I can see Zipp using the Wonderbolts as a jumping-off point to help show what wonders the sky holds for ponies. To share her spark with them.
I hope they don't shoehorn her into just a pony that is a girl but doesn't like frills. I feel like Zipp isn't the holder of the element of Loyalty like Rainbow, but instead, she's honesty. She hated lying to people sure she'd never abandoned her new friends but she knows the value of honesty and the distrust lying can bring to a kingdom when the truth is revealed.
***
Now for our second Pony, we have the pony I think could be any of the elements of harmony but more than likely is the element of Loyalty. The ever-adorable Izzy who at first we thought would just be a mash of Rarity meets Pinky, to make up for the fact that there are only 5 mane characters. Her cutie mark being something crafty and her personality being very bubbly.
Honestly, she is adorable and you can't help but love her. If Zipp wasn't so amazing Izzy would be my fav. Although Izzy may have looked like she was going to be a fashionista or party pony. She was far from what we expected and we love her for being her own pony.
Her recycling is an amazing idea, being a crafty pony and making fun things. Is such a great idea and sets her far apart from the fashion ponies and party ponies. She is a loveable goof who is helpful without being pushy. Her pure joy in making things for friends is what we love about her.
In comparison, Rarity loved the praise her fashions got, a perfect dress for every pony, and to make them all shine was her goal. Pinky wanted to put smiles on people's faces with parties and jokes, she wanted to bring joy to every pony.
Izzy just wants to make friends and share her stuff with said friends. I could see her setting up a shop, she could sell her friendship stuff like the bracelets. But I think her joy in life will come more from sharing special moments with a small group that with love her for her. In all her shiny sparkle ways. I see her more like a pony who will start a business that will allow ponies to make their own memories rather than sell pieces already made.
Izzy is a ball of sparkles that I hope doesn't become a character that's just there for the giggles. I can see her being the element of Loyalty because once you're her friend you'll mean more to her than anything in the world.
***
Now we all love a good strong non-toxic character, big mac is a good example of this. Hitch is another. He's strong confident and yet kind in his own way. He is the ideal male character. Someone who will be the voice of reason without making others feel bad. He is compared to Fluttershy in most ways because of the animals and I do agree that he more than likely will be the holder of the element of kindness. Yet he isn't Fluttershy.
I think the fact that he loves every living thing and wants them to live happily and as equals, why he'll be the elements holder.
Hitch unlike Fluttershy isn't an animal caretaker, but a protector. He has a stronger voice than Fluttershy, he won't back down from a challenge if it means protecting anyone or any creature that is under his care. He is a welcome addition to the pony cast. Giving the little boys who love ponies a pony that isn't a girl, but also isn't just a background character.
Sure the stereotype of the Sherriff being a male pony is a little, overdone. Yet Hitch is a kind person who only wants to help and protect and he does things even if he knows may not look cool because it make a friend happy. Like the scene where he does the secret hand shake with Sunny. You just can't help but love Hitch and hope he isn't to be the only male in this group for the entire show. Perhaps getting a male friend probably a unicorn or another creature like a dragon to balance the main cast.
I hope in the future we get to see just how he protects not just his friends but every pony without being aggressive but by being kind. Showing people like Sprout that there is away to help without overdoing it or forcing it.
***
Then there is Princess Pipp who I think is the holder to element of generosity. She is a girly girl but also speaks to the Gen that she is aimed for. Always on social media and on her phone. She's a soft jab at how the real world is in a way. Sure she could be compared to Rarity, but her love for music and phone sets her apart. I can see her story being about who to make the world better. Showing how the effect of love and humor can altered those around her.
We know Zipp is next in line for the throne, so what does the future hold for Pipp. Perhaps a career in music or something about how no matter how famous and rich she becomes it doesn't help with her sense of completion. How her close friends are where she'll find true happiness while helping others find that same sense of belonging. Will she help those around her by giving them what they not just want but what they need. Weather they know what that was or not. That's what I hope to see in her story.
The good and the bad, the outcome of just handing people something like fame or a big break. Learning the lesson that you can fail at what you don't want and might as well take a chance at what you love. I can't wait to see what they do for our new princess.
***
Sunny...what to say about Sunny? First she's not Twilight, in any way shape of form. Sure she got an alicorn body at the end of the movie, but that doesn't make her a princess. She is a good example of the fact that this isn't gen 4.
On the subject of her new horn and wings. I doubt she'll keep that form. I wouldn't mind if she did because it's cute but it also doesn't seem fully deserved. Sure she brought magic back, but she played no more a bigger part than Izzy. If anything Izzy played a bigger part. Izzy ventured out while Sunny only took the time to change her corner of the world. Sure I love Sunny her story is amazing but I feel like she needs more fleshing out. Like the world she leaves us with so many unanswered questions.
Sure I love that she was an activist and protester, she went about trying to spread love without really being pushy. Which is nice she was amazing and you can't help but love her. Yet she seems too naïve, her gaining the abilities of someone equal to Twilight seems a bit much. In fact the only element of harmony I wouldn't give Sunny is, magic.
She's funny but the element of Laughter isn't her goal. She wants everyone to be happy but laughter isn't what she's after...lol...She's kind but Hitch is more suited for that element, just like Loyalty is Izzy.
Sure Sunny would never leave a friend behind, and Loyalty is rather close to being the element for her but she also understands after years of bullying that not everyone is her friend.
As for generosity, she isn't exactly someone to just hand things to people without thinking. She'd happily give someone a cupcake but I doubt no matter what would happen she'd never hand over her note book or father necklace to just anyone because it make them happy. As for honesty she lied to Hitch her friend without remorse, enough said about that.
Now that leaves only magic, sure her pure hope for friendship and to find a place among her kind is likely to be equal to magic. I don't think the element suits her. I think if anything Sunny is the seventh element the lost element of harmony.
The element of Acceptance.
(Also seen in MLP Equestira girls being Sunset shimmer.)
I think in the future I want to see Sunny spend her time uniting the world, making friends and helping everyone learn the new world that she has set in motion. How she will show the world that their is a value in friendship. I also hope she seeks out the truth about the past and answer the many questions movie gave us.
(Sorry for the long pose... But why don't you tell me what you think in the comments. What would you like to see in the upcoming show and what element you think each character might be.)

Post-Trailer Generation 5 Thoughts
So, a trailer for the beginning of G5 has now been released. And as promised, I am having a supplementary post to my preliminary thoughts and concerns heading into G5. Though I do first want to answer something I’m sure some might be curious about and that’s if G5 will have any bearing on I Dream of Twilight Sparkle. Given the thing about it being supposedly being the same Equestria at least according to mentions of the Mane 6 as the ancient times and by execs.
G5’S EFFECT ON I DREAM OF TWILIGHT SPARKLE
I will go ahead and say that no, other then if there’s maybe a part of the movie and/or upcoming series I want to make some sort of reference to for any reason that G5 will not happen in the IDOTS universe. The thing about the premise of G5 contradicts a huge thing that’s part of Secrets of the Dragon’s Tear in that Life itself is Magic. With presumably years and years of no magic, G5’s world wouldn’t exist. It’d be the lifeless wasteland that was seen in the Season 5 finale. I will stay firmly on G4 characters as I still have plenty I want to do with them. I’ve once thought about ending I Dream of Twilight Sparkle on the 10th anniversary of the blog next year. But that might not be enough time to fully explore everything I want to do post-Secrets of the Dragon’s Tear. So rest assured I have lots of plans still without having to dive into G5 material.
Another huge difference in IDOTS case that I will point out is that thousands of years by now as I imagine is implied by G4 being Ancient Equestria in G5. Is that Twilight (and Spike too, who will probably be full size at that point) will still be around. And even the others of the Mane 6 and other characters of the G4 generation will likely be able to guide the living as summonable spirits. I doubt under that context that the world of Equestria deteriorates to G5’s situation with this all in mind.
(More after the break)
REITERATING THE CONCERNS ABOUT THE G4-G5 CONNECTION
But now to actually get the trailer itself, it generally shows what we know already but this is the first time we see a little bit in how they’re executing it in motion and acting. They are going to continue mentioning that G4 is the ancient times of this world with the only reason Pony relations that seems to have deteriorated is the long passage of time. Which seems like a terrible interpretation of time. Division still happens in our world especially in the politics side of things but thousands of years ago (or even just a few hundred years ago) it was far worse then it is now with authoritarian empires, monarchies, and enslavement of people everywhere. There’s not a period of history from thousands of years ago that most of us look to have again like Sunny will for Twilight’s reign.
If we are to take it at face value that G5 happened after G4, the peaceful world we saw in The Last Problem where not just all 3 pony types but even non-pony species popullate many areas of Equestria and live in harmony. Even if perhaps you’re not a fan of one or both of the final two seasons of the show, The Last Problem showed that Twilight’s friendship school accomplished it’s goal in helping Equestria reach out to other places in the world. It’s hard to see from that point how things can deteriorate where things seem to be far worse then Celestia’s sole rule of 1,000 years. Or to go even further, it seems to have gotten just as bad if not worse then the Hearth’s Warming story of the founding of Equestria. It’s arguably worse then even the Hearth’s Warming story since even if it was obvious the three types of ponies hated each other, they tolerated each other enough to bargain the necessities at that point. The earth ponies would make the food if the Unicorns move the sun and moon and the Pegasi help with the weather. But as seen in the trailer even one sighting of a unicorn in an Earth pony town puts the whole place in a panic.
Speaking of the Hearth’s Warming story they’re going to have explain why the Windigoes aren’t currently ravaging the planet in Ice and Snow like in the story if we’re to truly believe this is the G4 world we know. Somehow I feel they’re not going to for that deep cut in terms of the lore of G4. I think any connection to G4 is going to be treated more as an afterthought. References to Twilight and her friends, the toys in Sunny’s house, and murals to the past the only huge indications that G4 was the ancient past and never explaining how things got where they are now. I believe this is an attempt of Hasbro to bake it’s cake and eat it too. They want to try to retain G4’s popularity heading into G5 so they try to say G5 is the same exact world even when so much of the evidence we’ve seen so far is too different to be world we knew. (I know there’s a map that shows the Pegasi have what might have once been Canterlot. But there still needs to be more) I feel like most fans going into this should go into this thinking this is a totally new world despite the references to G4. Or even perhaps the ancient G4 isn’t the same G4 we saw in the show. Maybe the Friendship school never happened in this timeline for example. An alternate universe G4 where they never developed the school might make this at least somewhat more palatable. Though even then there’d still be questions.
Another note in the story is as a sort of flipped from G4. Where Canterlot had Unicorns seem to make up most of the rich upper-class ponies. The pegasi seem to be the upper-class and/or royals this time while the Unicorns are actually the poorest of the three and Earth Ponies are middle-class. I slightly joked after hearing that maybe this is a universe where Cozy Glow actually got what she wanted given she was a Pegasus heh. Not that makes any sense either, as there’s probably no honoring of the Mane 6 if they got defeated by a Pegasus filly.
BOOK LEAK
On the same day of the trailer we also got something of a leak of book that comes out next week that recaps the movie in a children’s book style (Don’t worry I won’t spoil anything from it, but yes I did see the scans). Now naturally not all details of an entire movie is probably going to get in a picture book with small excerpts of text on a 32 page book. But it does generally give an outline of how the movie goes. The scans give enough of an outline of how the movie will go. I just have too much concern about G5 to resist knowing how the movie will go to wait until the movie releases. I still intend to see the movie itself but it’ll sort of give me an idea of what we’re in for. For a spoiler-free review of what I know, I think under it’s own merits if we ignore the G4 elephant in the room it’ll probably be a decent way to start things.
FANDOM REACTION
I think if the context was G5 was it’s own separate universe with no connection to G4 it could potentially have some standing on it’s own and will probably have young kids enjoy the movie that see G5 before they see Friendship is Magic. For older fans of G4 though, heading into this generation there’s going to be a lot of things preoccupying the mind before we even start watching the movie. Having G4 as the ancient past has something of a pro of at least getting some fans who liked FiM to at least give this a chance, but at the cost of leaving certain expectations and putting some of the creative freedom in a bind because to tell us this is the same world means you will have fans pointing out contradictions where as there would be no concern if this world was allowed to be it’s own thing The writers and staff of G5 are going to have fans that criticize them for any choice they make that doesn’t fit with G4 in some way. I’m not going to be one of them of course, as that’s annoying behavior even if I agree with the fan who’s criticizing them. And fans have plenty to already raise an eyebrow at, such as normal animals oddly having wings and/or horns when normal animals tended to be just normal animals in G4 (Albeit alot more sentient then real life animals).
LACK OF NON-PONIES?
There also doesn’t seem to be any sign of the other species that became more prominent in late G4. There’s not even a Spike from what we can see thus far. Unless maybe there’s a 6th main character that gets introduced in the beginning of the series that has a little dragon companion this would be the first time since maybe My Little Pony Tales that there was no Spike. I imagine we will get the return of some non-pony species.but it’s still going to be an elephant in the room because the end of G4 showed that basically all other species became allies to the ponies. Did relations to the non-ponies also deteriorate terribly? And there’s also the possibility that many of the Dragons have long enough lives that they remember Twilight’s reign. Maybe even a possibility of full-grown Spike making an appearance in the series. But then there’s still griffins, hippogriffs/seaponies, yaks, kirins, changelings, and more. You keep the world of G4 you have to keep in mind all the species that played a role at some point. If you ignore them for too long it’s another point to those who might feel that this isn’t truly G4’s world.
ALICORNS
I won’t say much on subject of Alicorns since I already mentioned that in the preliminary thoughts, though I will reiterate things like even if say we overestimated the immortality of Alicorns they may still need to point out that Twilight, Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and probably Flurry Heart too are all gone. There doesn’t seem to be any signs of Alicorns at all. To be honest it might be that the only real Alicorn reference is the possibility during the scene where Izzy disguises everyone as unicorns. Someone manages to see either Zipp’s or Pipp’s wings and thus they get a lot of unwanted attention. (And in contrast probably one of the non-Izzy main characters horn disguise falling off)
CONFLICT AND HAPPY ENDING OVERRIDES
I get that the main response to concerns of G4 fans is there has to be some sort of conflict for this series to be interesting as otherwise you go back to the too saccharine days of G3 where the conflicts leave almost no danger to the world at large. But we can still point out that if this was presented as it’s own world separate from G4 this would be ok. But not the same world where Sunny’s goal had been more then already achieved. It doesn’t lay the blame at the Mane 6 for failing at the very least but it certainly looks down at all their descendants generations later of being unable to withhold the Mane 6’s lessons and keep the peace. They had the solutions for divisions mostly solved, yet it’s somehow squandered. It won’t be easy to swallow for anyone who loved the conclusive happy ending FiM got. And even for fans who weren’t as into the ending as others they’re only being vindictive if they say it makes their criticism of the ending valid.
The point is the series ended as happily as it could of gotten, and you will bug fans no matter what you do if you attempt a happy ending override. Just look at how for example the Last Jedi bothered some Star Wars fans with Luke’s characterization after the joyful end to the original trilogy.
HARD ACT TO FOLLOW & DIVISIVE FANDOM MOMENTS
Now, even if G5 had none of the pre-conditioned concerns it would have a lot to live up to. G4 is the absolute highest peak MLP has ever gotten to. Hasbro’s going to try to repeat the same success but it’s a lot more likely G4 remains a lightning in a bottle that can’t be repeated. And any attempt to recapture that lightning such as applying G4 as the ancient past is looking to backfire. It’s very likely that even if G5 is generally a success, Hasbro will not reap the same benefits that it got from G4. The cost of a big success is the pursuit of attempting to repeat that success but ultimately not working out quite the same way. I don’t wish any ill will of Generation 5, I want it to have an audience and the staff to enjoy themselves working on the show. I don’t think it will quite capture the same attention I gave to G4 but that’s ok. This is how Hasbro’s operated for decades, as I’m sure Transformers fans have gone through the same feeling.
There are shows that have maintained fandoms for years despite the show having ended more then 10 years ago. I don’t think Friendship is Magic is going to be forgotten anytime soon. There are sure to be clashes about G5 in the coming years as it’s impossible to control an entire fandom that will have it’s vocal parts at eachother’s throats. But I don’t plan on looking down on anyone who ends up enjoying G5, I hope in some way there are those who may enjoy G5 as much as we did G4. And also for said G5 fans to respect those who continue to do mainly G4 content. I plan to give G5 a chance to grow on me, I just know the G4 is the past concept is going to somewhat bother me in a similar way to how for a long while Starlight’s lack of a full-fledged backstory prevented me from looking at her character with nothing but lukewarm feelings (Until I expanded on her myself in a story after the show’s ending). But just like with Starlight I don’t plan to rain on the parade of those who did end up liking Starlight. Especially considering I’m probably among the fans that were on the other side of those arguments as someone who liked the idea of Alicorn Twilight despite how divisive it was. I’ve been somewhat on both sides of different controversies in G4’s time itself. As G4 itself had it’s own divisive parts in it’s own history. Arguably, G5 being the distant future makes it just another part of those fandom controversies.
Though even with everything that happened a positive side of all of those is there were many fans invested one way or another to get heated about the show. Not saying it’s a good thing to have fans at each other’s throats but it’s part of G4’s legacy that people cared when something disappointed them. I think while there were certainly a good number of fans that left the fandom over certain stuff especially in regards to Season 3 and the first Equestria Girls. Those who stayed generally still had good things to look forward to. I myself kind of feel like Starlight’s reformation was the closest to a jump the shark moment where Season 6 failed to capitalize on nearly all it’s opportunity of what Season 5 laid up for the show’s future. But there were still good episodes in Season 6, Season 7 had some pretty great episodes, Season 8 is a bit of a mixed bag but even that had it’s fun parts, and I’m on the side that I’m happy with how the final episodes of Season 9 finished off the show. I don’t think Starlight’s reformation was a point where the show never reached another high point and I’m happy it was successful enough to get a conclusive ending rather then either getting canceled after a finale that didn’t leave things off with a proper goodbye or ending too early. As if the show had not been as popular as it did, Magical Mystery Cure would of been the series finale. I’m actually one of those who loved MMC, but for the show not to get things like the CMC’s cutie marks and just leave things that Twilight is a princess and that’s it certainly would of been way too soon of an ending.
CONCLUSION
Obviously, the staff seemed to plan for more then 9 seasons as no doubt they probably had more plans for the Student 6 and/or Cozy Glow had they gotten the green light for Season 10 or more. But for what it’s worth, it still got an conclusion that not all cartoons like this get. For all it’s ups and downs, MLP retained my interest for the entire run that I started watching and I still intend to do fan content about it’s characters a few years after it ended, so G4 MLP continues to be retained in a special place in my heart. Perhaps that’s a big reason I have the concerns about G5 that I do that I’m attached to that universe and for it to say things go downhill even if it’s not really the fault of the Mane 6 or anything makes it hard to accept very easily. I do think my concerns about the G4-G5 connection have merit either way, but I will repeat that I don’t wish any ill will on G5. Whether fair or not, G5 has a lot to live up to after the success of G4 and the consequences will be there for fan expectations. I hope it finds a decent enough audience regardless, and I hope that if I try to ignore the baggage of the implications of an Ancient G4 Equestria being part of this that maybe there’s something there for me too. I never thought I’d be invested so much in a cartoon about magical talking horses to this point a long time ago, but gosh darn it G4 managed to do so. And the staff behind G5 will have a lot on their shoulders to try to maintain that interest. Even if that task is impossible, I hope they try their hardest. Even if I’m not as invested into this generation, I want to be able to respect a good try.

My Mother never liked me visiting my Grandfather’s house, but stories of his adventures were often a topic of discussion at the dinner table. He was an eccentric man to say the least and always seemed to be caught neck-deep in another one of his schemes. One month it would be textiles and the next it would be bee keeping—the former having caused him to be banned from the farmer’s market for his pieces being too vulgar. My Mother clearly didn’t want him to be a bad influence on me growing up. In fact, it was hard to imagine that my tight-laced Mother was at all related to him. But there was something about seeing her roll her eyes at all his hijinks night after night that that made me look up to him as some kind of mythical being and I wanted to meet him all the more.
I had never actually met him myself, but I had seen a few pictures. He was known for his long grey hair and even longer beard. He liked to make it his mission to make the world a brighter place and one of the ways he did that was with his colourful wardrobe. He died his clothes with the flowers from his garden and also liked to stick the flowers in his beard. One afternoon, after coming home from playing outside, I had grass stains on my dress and flowers stuck in my curls. My Mother wrinkled her nose and said that I looked just like my Grandfather—which was the best compliment that I had ever received at the time.
As I grew older, it only brought my head closer to the clouds and my Mother seemed to have given up on me joining her in her beige coloured world. My curls turned wild like the mane of a lion and there was always dirt underneath my fingernails. Life just seemed so boring to me and I couldn’t imagine myself working every day for the rest of my life. I wanted more. And once again, I found myself thinking of the unicorn that was my Grandfather. I wanted to meet him now more than ever, and this time there wasn’t anything stopping me.
One of the things about my Grandfather that I always fixated on when I was a child was how he lived in a little cottage by himself up in the highlands, but I learned that he ended up having to sell it and move to a place downtown. I found the address and he turned out to be living in a retirement home. It seemed so hard to imagine someone like him living in a place like that, and I began to wonder to myself if I really knew him at all.
I wasn’t sure what to bring him when I went. Retirement homes had always reminded me of hospitals and it seemed like a normal thing to bring someone flowers while they were in the hospital. So I stopped by the farmers market to eye the boring textiles before picking up the most colourful blooms that I could find. I imagined him putting them in his beard and it crossed my mind that he might be sad without his garden—so I picked up a few more pots to decorate his room.
The building downtown was tall and brown. It looked as though it had recently gone through renovations to make it seem more modern, but there was something about it that reminded me of an old withered leaf in the last days of autumn—only with a fresh coat of paint. I couldn’t believe that he had been swallowed up by the boring beige world. I looked at my armful of flower pots and wondered if it wouldn’t be enough. There was a rattling sound as the pots vibrated against one-another and I realized that I was shaking. I could hear my heart beating in my ears. I had been waiting for this day my whole life, but why was I so nervous?
My shoes clicked on the muted green linoleum tiles as I made my way down the fluorescent lit hallway to my Grandfather’s room. There were orderlies walking around in scrubs and I could hear the sound of a woman screaming somewhere else on the floor. Every time that I passed one of the rooms, I could see one of the residents sitting in there with a blank expression on their pale face as though the life-force had been sucked right out of them. All my life, I could never imagine that he would end up in a place like this.
I found the door with his name written on the wall beside it in boring newsprint letters. I looked at the name and the fact that this was all really happening was beginning to set in. What if he didn’t like me? Or what if he wasn’t the man that I thought he was? I wasn’t sure what would be worse. The door was open, but I hesitated before stepping inside. Should I have even come? There were no voices coming from the room, or even the sound of the radio playing, all that I could hear was the sound of an oxygen tank. I took in a deep breath and knocked on the door.
“Hello?” a weak voice asked from inside the room.
I poked my head into the door and saw an old man laying in his mint coloured bed. He had lost all of his hair and his beard was gone. His face was pale and gaunt. This wasn’t the man that I had seen from all of those old photographs—I didn’t know this man at all. My heart sank just a little and for some reason, I suddenly became very aware of how frizzy my hair was.
“Hi Grandpa, it’s me Izzy… Er, Isabelle,” my voice stammered. “Your Granddaughter.”
His brow furrowed at first and I felt a pang in my chest, but then it was like someone turned a light on in his mind. His eyes brightened and his mouth widened into a smile.
“Izzy!” he exclaimed and threw his arms up in the air.
Every bit of nerves and worry that I had been feeling until that very moment was eased. He was my Grandfather after-all. I sat down beside his bed and placed the flower pots down on the table there. I could tell how thankful he was to have some colour in this drab room. He admired the pretty blooms and plucked one that he liked most. Since he had no beard to stick it in, he placed it behind his ear and smiled as though he were very proud of himself. We laughed together for quite some time. Even though this was our first time meeting, there was a certain bond between us.
“You know, I’ve been waiting me whole life to meet you,” I told him.
“Me too,” he replied.

Ask a writer!
tagged by @mysillylittlesoapbox (yes I do still write fic... sometimes :p I’m afraid it’s all Gotham now though!) ...I don’t usually do memes about my writing though so, this should be...interesting...
1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?
my name is holly, holly leaves are a thing, I wanted to just be ‘hollyleaf’ but it was already taken so I figured ‘well hey, I’m also small...’ and voila! (no, I’m so sorry, but the Warrior Cats series was not involved at any point, I still haven’t read them and only know a character has my username, or a version of it, because of all the asks I keep getting about it :P)
2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/favorites, follows/subscriptions, visitor hits, kudos)
So I had a quick glance at AO3 and this is something it looks like WAAAAY too much effort for my lazy ass to figure out, plus I dunno how accurate the AO3 stats would be for my stuff anyways because I only very recently put all my fic on there after having most of it posted (and therefore commented on and otherwise interacted with) solely over at LJ for years and years...
I would imagine it’s Imitating Life (spn, deancas), because that’s the one I remember getting the most feedback for. So I’ll just go with that!
3. What is your FFnNet/AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?
It’s the same as my tumblr one. Because it’s me and I already had the image saved in an appropriate size. I know, dull right?? (back on LJ I was OBSESSED with finding and/or creating SO MANY different icons to convey different moods and whatnot - they were basically an oldschool version of reaction gifs I guess - but on any other platform I’ve been just... meh about the icon thing... idk!)
4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?
@vampirebillionaire has been a regular for my Gotham stuff, notable for jumping ship with me into foxma :) (well not jumping... simultaneously enjoying :p), for which I am profoundly grateful xx but generally my fic style and content is a bit... eclectic I guess? so no, no one who is super regular
5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again?
Of my own? Nah. Well... not AGAIN AND AGAIN like on the regular. I HAVE re-read my stuff OF COURSE :p But usually it’s me re-reading previous parts of a series/set to get the feel for the story/characters again as I write new stuff. Though admittedly I have re-read Imitating Life more than most probably, to check it still reads okay.
As to other authors’ fics - I must confess that I read less and less these days, so there is def not a single one I constantly return to.
I have, however, re-read a few by depthsofgreen since I got into Gotham, as well as some by rissalf and silentsinger
Back in the day there was this one spn last unicorn AU I used to re-read the night before each premiere, because it was a deliciously angsty way to get me in the mood for a new season and pass the time while waiting - particularly notable because AUs are not really my thing, so it was an interesting choice for me to keep returning to! Alas I have lost my link to it however :( Should anyone know the one I mean drop me a line! (Cas was the unicorn, obvs, Dean was the Prince, Sam was Schmendrick, Anna was Molly and Meg was Fortuna)
6. How many stories are you subscribed to? How many do you have bookmarked?
I have ONE (1) story bookmarked - because it is a WIP I am following (and I just learnt how to bookmark the other month)
...what even is subscribing and how is it different??
7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?
None at all if possible. Although most of my fics end up being Canon Divergent in the end ofc they are generally canon compliant (based on my interpretation of the canon anyways) at the time of writing... Sometimes canon changes things while I am in the middle of writing stuff though ofc (*shakes fist at Gotham right now*), in which case I will unavoidably be writing something knowingly Canon Divergent/What If.
(aside - I tried to write an spn x-men AU once, but I got bored very quickly... full on AUs are just not me!)
8. How many people are subscribed and bookmarked to you in total? (you can view this on the stats page)
OH THERE’S A STATS PAGE?
*checks*
K - 34 subscribers and 423 bookmarks (whoa that seems a lot??)
hey there’s graphs and stuff with your top five fics based on hits too - that’s pretty cool - my top is in fact Holding On and Letting Go... probably because it was one of my last big spn fics and one of the first I published on AO3...
9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are afraid of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!)
No... I mean... I don’t think so? If there ever has been it’s passed me by and I’ve forgotten about it.
...for a hot minute I was into Eddie/Isabella in Gotham, and that plot was ofc (understandably) received VERY POORLY by the fandom, so I may have at one point been hesitant to explore that idea (and the related Ozzie/Eddie/Izzy thoughts I had) because of that... but I never got as far as wanting to actually WRITE anything that I recall so... I guess not really?
10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.
There’s a couple of dumb little grammatical things I wish I was better at remembering - like when it’s ‘passed’ and when it’s ‘past’ or when it’s ‘effect’ and when it’s ‘affect.’ Because I forget and have to look it up Every.Damn.Time!
11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?
Well, the ship I’ve written most for is deancas - so it’s def ‘popular ships’ I write most! (though I would like to point out that it WASN’T ONE when I STARTED :p).
I’m not opposed to writing rarepairs as well however (she says, in the middle of a huge Gotham rarepair series!). I just write... whatever I’m enjoying most at the time.
12. How many stories have you posted on FFNet/AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?
I’ve got 39 works up on AO3. Never published on FFNet. Probably got a few little things that I’ve only ever published on tumblr (like my cracky spn/WtNV crossover :p), so total number published across the board is more like 40ish...
13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?
(not counting the abandoned spn x-men AU that will remain forever unfinished) Just one. I CANNOT work on more than one fic at a time.
14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?
In my head (my stories are never especially complex after all). Once I’m stuck into a fic though I do tend to start creating bullet points below the main text of certain things that are coming next - like specific lines or phrases/metaphors I might think up as I go that I want to make sure I include, or the order of certain scenes if there is a series of short ones on the way, or sometimes points with question marks if I haven’t quite decided on something (eg. ‘have Eddie take his hat off here or wait until Ozzie smiles at him?’ that kind of thing...)
15. Have you ever co-authored a story?
No. I came CLOSE to co-writing a DCBB with the lovely @takadainmate YEARS AGO but we never quite made it work (I got a distracted by involving Balthazar in a subplot and went on my own tangent, we had trouble even getting together to discuss it, the deadline started looming and eventually we wisely close to call it a day!).
For a while there were VAGUE murmurings about returning to the idea... but the plot involved Dean and Cas getting trapped together in Purgatory you see aND THEN SEASON 8 HAPPENED!! So we decided to let canon run with it instead :P
16. How did you discover FFNet/AO3?
While I don’t use FFNet and don’t even read stuff there now, I did used to read fics on it early on. I discovered it while searching for info on my very first TV obsession Due South and was DELIGHTED to find a place full of stories about this thing I loved but had no new content for at the time :)
AO3 I remember being talked about and used a little by my LJ crowd, which is how I heard of it. I didn’t start using it myself until recently when I realised it had very much become the go-to hosting site used by tumblr fic writers.
17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on FFNet/AO3?
Nah.
18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?
...my personal readers? As in, not the general name for the various fandoms (like ‘spn family’ or ‘Gotham fam’), but for the people who read my fic specifically?
No... that seems... weird...?
19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?
Actually... no... no one specific. Just... reading lots of fiction by lots of different writers, fic writers included, is what inspired/encouraged me to take a crack at it myself I suppose.
20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?
Do not listen to me!
21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?
Um... both I suppose. Only... my plotting isn’t really... plotting.
Because I just... daydream, you know? And after a bit I’ll realise that I’m coming back to one particular daydream more often than another. And adding to it. And adding to it. Until I’ve got something at least vaguely coherent. At which point I make a decision as to whether I like the scenario enough to write it down or not and if I do, well, it’s already pretty much there and fully formed in my head, so no additional ‘plotting’ necessary (just the ironing out and researching of a few details).
But while I’m daydreaming... well that’s me ‘figuring it out as I go’ I guess.
22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?
My first foray into writing fic was with a Clex re-write of S05 Smallville. It ended up being a sprawling, much too ambitious multi-chapter thing I had no hope of ever finishing. But hey, it kept me out of trouble :p
Anyways, I was part of a sci-fi society at Uni at the time I was writing and each of us in the group developed these different fictional versions of ourselves over the course of our time together... because we were a sci-fi society and it was fun! And I thought it would be a laugh if, for one chapter, I put all of us into my SV fic. So I did (I made us all kryptonite infected characters who lived at Lex’s secret 33.1 facility - if any SV fans are reading) and prefaced the chapter with some disclaimer about how I was sorry if this part was a bit too self indulgent or ‘mary-sue’ or whatever, but that I couldn’t resist doing it for my friends, and that things would get back to normal next chapter.
And generally it was fine - I didn’t have many readers anyway :p
But long LONG after the fact, when I had written many other chapters since, I got a comment on this one chapter from someone saying that they felt my self-insert characters came across as too obviously self indulgent and were unnecessary and that I shouldn’t have written them in.
And you know, it was a fair call. But since I’d actually prefaced the chapter with myself saying that’s EXACTLY what they were, it seemed a bit odd to me that this person would bother making a point of the issue. And to compound confusion - this person had actually already commented POSITIVELY on the chapter when I first posted it, so their comment read something like ‘I’ve been re-reading this and on consideration ACTUALLY I think you should know that...’
So... that was a bit odd. Not really bad, but notable enough that it’s stayed with me! Since I was many many chapters along in the story at that point though it was easy enough to just nod and shrug and move on.
I’m lucky in that I’ve never received any actual scathing or horribly negative comments otherwise. I like to think I’d be thoughtful and philosophical about any serious criticism I might receive...
23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)
Hmmm. Exposition probably. My focus is typically on a character’s emotion at any given time, but when the only thing happening is characters discussing what’s happening and when and why there’s not exactly much strong emotion involved you know? So I struggle, because it’s boring to write and I constantly fear I’m not describing/depicting it in a way that is interesting to the reader and blah blah.
(part of the reason I don’t often write complex stories anymore perhaps - less narrative means less exposition!)
(smut used to be hard... now it is less so... though that doesn’t mean I think I’m good at it now! I don’t think I’ll ever shake the fear that my smut is actually cringe-worthy...)
24. What story(s) are you working on now?
Just The Fox and the Scorpion :)
25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?
No. Like I say above - I CANNOT work on more than one fic at a time. How do people do that??? I bow to you all!
I have in the past paused in the middle of longer spn fics (like my DCBBs) to knock out some quick ‘finished in the span of an evening’ FICLETS, usually in response to specific happenings in canon (like when Gabriel died and I just HAD to type something up as an outlet). But I don’t think that’s really quite what this question means? Because those aren’t projects OR stories, they are just... SCENES, you know? Also - I haven’t written a ficlet in FOREVER, so I’m not even sure I could do it anymore...
Having said this - I DO CONSTANTLY DAYDREAM. Which involves daydreaming multiple scenarios not exclusive to whatever fic I’m in the middle of. Some of which may well end up being part of the next fic I end up writing. But that’s hardly ‘planning’ I think? Because at that stage of things I’ll have no desire to make what I’m dreaming part of an actual story/fic.
26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?
Nah. I just write when I feel like it and keep going until I’m done.
If I’m writing for a challenge this changes ofc, because DEADLINES. So sometimes I’ve had to set goals because of that - usually it’s something vague though, like ‘you need to get to this point in the plot by tomorrow night Holly, come on!’ Nothing so regimented as a specific amount of time and/or words every day.
...generally when I’m in the middle of a fic I end up in a kind of... idk, natural momentum that pulls me on? Like there’s this constant FEELING in the back of my mind urging me to get back to the story. And not in a nagging guilt kind of way, in a ‘this is what I WANT to be doing right now’ kind of way.
Not that I end up easily writing every time I get back to the fic or anything! Sometimes I’ll get back to the page and just... be stuck, find I’m not in the mood or can’t think of the words or whatever. Which is frustrating because I still have that feeling of WANTING to continue the story, but I’ll know that I’m not in the right frame of mind so have to leave it for a bit (which can be anywhere from a few hours to a week). Generally the pull to keep writing draws me back in eventually though.
27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?
Goodness yes. I think if you’re writing regularly you’re just ALWAYS improving, aren’t you? Naturally my fic today is better than my first attempts, but likewise I think some of my Gotham fics are better than my spn fics in some parts. It’s a constant process isn’t it?
28. What is your favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
Imitating Life remains one of the fics I’m most proud of. Not only did the main story hold up well AND stick to overall canon (when it comes to Dean and Cas at least), so I think anyways, I also wove in a couple of subplots I very much enjoyed seeing through to the end. PLUS I really enjoyed all the meta nonsense, including messing about with the format to make it like look (a little bit) like a screenplay. So yes, that one will always hold a dear place in my heart :)
For Gotham I don’t think I’m ever gonna do better than We Are What We Are tbh
29. What is your least favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
Generally unimpressed by ALL my SV fic now. And considering I spent SO MANY HOURS/DAYS/WEEKS/MONTHS/YEARS of my life on it all I kinda feel like I should feel bad about that but... you know I really don’t? Because if it wasn’t for all the time and effort (and love and fun) I put into those not very good stories, I wouldn’t be enjoying the work I’m proud of and writing today. So *shrug emoji*
30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?
5 whole years? Tbh I rather think I’ll have stopped writing by then. I’ve been winding down when it comes to fic for a LONG TIME now and writing for Gotham feels very much like a minor, brief resurgence of the hobby. Currently planning on calling it a day once I’ve finished Fox and Scorpion in fact.
31. What is the easiest thing about writing?
The part that doesn’t involve writing.
32. What is the hardest thing about writing?
Trying not to be repetitive.
Have I started a paragraph with this character’s name too many times in a row? Am I using ‘furrowed brow’/’bites lip’/’narrows eyes’/’insert stock descriptive phrase here’ too often? Did I use this phrase already or was that in another fic or in the book I was just reading? Is there too much alliteration in this sentence?  - to name but a few of the questions that inevitably pop up related to my paranoia about repetition.
33. Why do you write?
Because I’m insatiable and the stories onscreen aren’t enough for me.
...well that was exhaustingly introspective so I’m way too tired to tag! Interesting one though, made me think! (and taught me some stuff about AO3 :p)

Too much information
A/N - Not sure about this one. (insert cringey face here) but a follower said it sounded interesting so here goes nothing. One last thing, i just want it to be known i don’t want anyone to think I’m encouraging heavy drinking with this. It just seemed the way it came out. All things in moderation, except anything Shadowhunters related, that just a given.
All Everybody was at Magnus’s loft. The boys had invited them around for dinner and a few drinks. They had all enjoyed a massive Italian feast, apart from Simon, of course, that Magnus had told everyone he had catered but Alec had a feeling that he had ‘acquired’ it from an upmarket restaurant somewhere in Rome or Milan. When they were all full to bursting from the delicious food, Magnus, with a snap of his fingers, cleared the table and tidied the kitchen. They moved into the living room, flopping down around the room on the sofas and on the floor. Alec put some music on and then went back to sit on the sofa next to Magnus. They were all enjoying some easy conservation while nursing various drinks. Even Simon had a glass of red wine in his hand. He had taught himself to stomach various drinks but food was still off the menu. None of them, with the exception of Magnus, were drinkers. Shadowhunters had to keep their wits sharp and heads clear. Always being on call meant rare opportunities to indulge so when they got a chance to let their hair down, it was seldom wasted. Tonight had been one of those times. Aldertree had given Clary, Jace, Alec and Isabelle the weekend off since none of them had had a moment’s break in the weeks after the Institute attack. Magnus had gotten up to refresh drinks when he spied an ornate bottle at the back of his drinks cabinet. He reached in and took it out, running a hand over its textured surface. The bottle was a deep green with a pattern in the glass like climbing vines. Each leaf was gold and shiny. There was no label on it to tell him what it contained and he frowned down at it, racking his brain to remember where he had acquired it. As he stood there, he became aware of Alec standing behind him, his chin resting on his shoulder.“That looks interesting, what is it?” He asked.“I actually have no idea. I’ve been standing here trying to remember where it came from” Alec reached out and ran a finger over one of the gold leaves. It seemed to shimmer from his touch. Alec made a surprised noise.“That’s wild, never seen a bottle do that before. Hey, let’s open it and see what it is” He suggested.“I don’t know Alexander, everyone’s had quite a few rounds already and I can’t for the life of me think where this came from. I’m fairly sure it may have some magical element though”Alec, who hardly ever drank, had been drinking some of Magnus’s famous cocktails. The first one had tasted like rocket fuel to him but after the third they seemed to be going down a lot easier. Magnus looked back at his boyfriend. He seemed to be handling the Alcohol well, apart from his eyes looking a little brighter than usual. but he was still worried about him over doing it when he wasn’t used to it. “Come on Mags, we’re supposed to be relaxing tonight, kicking back. It’s got to some kind of wine. It must be drinkable otherwise why would it be in your liquor cabinet.” Alec reasoned.Magnus gave a sigh. He supposed maybe one glass wouldn’t hurt. He went back to the sofa while Alec grabbed some other glasses. Everyone else seemed intrigued by the bottle as well and quite happy to give it a try. Magnus uncorked it and poured some of the contents into a glass. The liquid that came out was a pale green and seemed to swirl around in the glass with a shimmer. Magnus took a tentative sip. He was surprised to find it had a distinct fruity, somewhat minty taste and the second it hit his tongue his nose was full of a rich floral perfume which was very heady. All eyes were on him, waiting for his opinion.“Very nice, but very potent, Small amounts only I think” Magnus still wasn’t sure about this. Alec poured the others a glass each, everyone taking hesitant sips. A few minutes later they were all making positive sounding noises and magnus relaxed a little. The room seemed to descend in a companionable silence after a few minutes, like a gap in a conversation. Jace and Clary were sitting together in a chair, Clary on Jace’s lap. Izzy and Simon had thrown large cushions of the floor and lay together, Izzy’s head resting on Simon’s stomach. Magnus was reclining on the sofa, his feet resting on the glass coffee table in front of him; Alec was leaning back against him, his head on his chest. Magnus was absently running his fingers through his hair. “I don’t think I’ve been this chilled out since that night we spent together in Idris” Clary said, snuggling closer to Jace, her voice a lazy drawl. Jace frowned.“what night was that?”“You know, that night when you sneaked into my room through the window and wanted to spend the night with me, even though you thought I was your sister?” Small noises of shock went round the room and all eyes went to Clary. She was looking back at then, frowning.“what? It’s true, but nothing happened”“that was a tad personal, wasn’t it?” Jace looked at her. Clary blinked a few times and then her face coloured.“God, yes it was, why did I say that?” “I supposed you could of said something worse like the time we slept together just after I found out about the heavenly fire and I nearly cooked you from the inside out” Jace gave a short laugh. Izzy was the only one to give a chuckle, everyone else had astonished looks on their faces. Jace suddenly stilled.“Crap, I can’t believe I just said that” Now it was his turn to blush. The words just fell from his mouth without thought.“Ha, you think that’s weird, try sleeping with a Seelie. I think I levitated three feet off the bed. Surprised the heck outta me” Izzy said, taking another sip from her glass. Simon gave her a disbelieving look but she didn’t see it. “How the heck did this get started? I really have no wish to know about where everyone’s done it or with who, too much information” Simon said, shifting uncomfortably.“This morning, in the shower, with Mags” Alec, suddenly called out raising his glass in the air. Clary choked and started to cough, Jace patting her on the back. Magnus stared back at him, absolutely scandalised. He was beginning to think something was going on here.“argh! No, no more!” Simon said, putting his hands over his ears. “Come on Simon, your no saint, who was it who told me about how you felt bad because the first time you and Izzy slept together you sank your fangs into her neck at the crucial moment” Clary said.“And you have no idea how good that felt either”“You let him bite you?” Alec said, frowning at his sister.“Oh my God, enough! Change the subject. I’m scared of ducks” Jace burst out. The room erupted in laughter. He looked sheepishly at them.“Well, I am”“I was scared when Raphael threatened to burn my junk of once. I’m not keen on clowns either” Simon added.“Spiders” Alec said.“falling in love” Izzy said quietly.“losing my love” Magnus said, grabbing Alec and kissing his forehead. It seemed he wasn’t immune to whatever was affecting them either.“Never going to happen, Mags” he reassured him.“Being alone” Clary said with a sigh.“Hey, I’m right here” Jace said, holding her close. They all got quiet once again, lost in their own thoughts. “Ok, enough with the deep stuff. This was supposed to be a fun night.” Izzy said, sitting up from the cushions.“Alec slept with a teddy bear till he was 15 and he called it Jace” Her brother flew up from where he was leaning against Magnus. His face so red Magnus was worried he was going to walk over and strangle Izzy. He put a calming hand on his shoulder, coaxing him back down. This was starting to get out of control.“Oh yeah, and who has a tattoo on her back that she secretly got when she was 14? Bet you didn’t know I knew about that did you?”“You really have a tattoo Izzy? What is it of?” Clary asked.Izzy blushed. “a butterfly” “Does Simon still wear Star Wars underwear?” Clary asked her.“Hey!” Simon looked indignant.“Yeah, and I think they’re cute.” Izzy giggled.“Well, do you still wear those panties with the unicorns on the front?” Simon fired back at Clary. Jace looked around Clary and gave him a goofy grin and nodded but Clary saw him.“Better then not wearing any at all” Clary said to him, thumping his arm.“Ah, A fellow commando” Magnus said, raising his glass towards Jace. Oh no, not again. Alec shot him a look.“I did have a favourite pair, they were designer black lace but they got ripped. You still owe me them, by the way” Izzy said, offhandedly looking at Simon.  Magnus frowned and cleared his throat. This evening had taken a major curve. They might all of been close but this close, was something else entirely. He looked towards the bottle on the table and frowned. Something was nagging at the back of his foggy mind.“You know who wears absolutely no underwear? The Seelie Queen. I heard she parades around the Court with just some flimsy see through gown.” Jace said.“I can attest to that one. We spent some time together years ago, very briefly. She had too many strange ideas about tying me up with vines……” Magnus replied. Everyone was looking at him in shock and he turned to Alec who had a look on his face that was a mixture of hurt and anger. Suddenly Magnus gave a yell.“That’s where that bottle came from. She gave it to me. No wonder everyone’s behaving like this, it’s faerie wine. They add their own blood to it and it causes you to reveal your deepest truths.” He flew up from the sofa and waved his hand  bringing up his blue flame. He brought his hands together and made it expand and then with a flourish, he spread it around the room. It came back to him and he snatched it out of air before it vanished. He would get rid of the secrets including his own later. Everyone was looking around at each other, confusion on their faces.“Wait, what just happened?” Izzy asked. “I feel like something just went down and I missed it”“yeah, me too.” Clary said. The others had similar looks on their faces.Magnus looked over to Alec who was sitting back in the sofa shaking his head. He took in a deep sigh. Thankful that his memory wipe seemed to of worked. Especially on Alec. The horrible hurt look on his face was something he never wanted to see again. He went back over to sit next to him, grabbing his hand,“Are you feeling ok, my love? I think you had one too many cocktails”“Yeah, I think your right. Wow, I feel wiped out” Alec said, his eyes getting heavy. From the look of the others the feeling was mutual.“Time for bed, for everyone, I think. It’s been quite an evening” Magnus said. The others decided to stay the night in the two guest bedrooms. Later that night as they lay in bed side by side, Magnus was watching Alec sleep. He would be glad to be able to get rid of all memory of their night . Including his own. As he watched Alec’s sleeping face, he made a mental note to never drink anything that he couldn’t remember where it had come from ever again. Especially anything that looked vaguely faerie related. There were certain things about their friends that he didn’t need to know. Simon in Star Wars underwear was at the top of  that list.
