I love Huntlow but the fact that the only "straight" (I know they're bi/pan but people assumed they were straight) ship in this gay show with the least amount of screentime and development (this isn't an insult, they were literally introduced last after the show had already been canceled) instantly became the most popular ship is kinda sad to me.

I know it's partly just because it's the ship that involves Hunter and he's the most popular character. But the most popular character in a cast full of girls and women being the only (white) male character doesn't exactly make me feel better.

Not only do I follow you because you make such damn good posts, but your a Willow stan. That’s my fucking girl right there!

I have stanned Willow since her debut. I remember having to go through and alter my tags after Wing it Like Witches, when we finally got confirmation on Willow's family name. And while I know other people have complained about it, long and loud, one of the reasons Huntlow makes me happy is because it has made more people notice Willow more as a character on her own as well as part of the ship.

I have been following Willow's character tag here religiously since I started watching the show. She is one of only four characters I do this with, alongside Eda, Lilith, and Raine. And it was always a little depressing in the era before Any Sport in a Storm that new content in Willow's tag was a rare delight. During the span of an entire week, there would be maybe three new posts added to her tag, and two would usually be lumity fanart where the artist tagged all the characters in the show despite only drawing Luz and Amity.

But what Dana and the crew did with Huntlow was brilliant here. Hunter was an EXTREMELY popular character ever since he was introduced, so when Hunter took a deeper interest in Willow, so did many of his fans. And this in turn lead to not only art and content of the ship, but more people celebrating Willow as a character all on her own as well. Hunter's popularity was used to help more people love and appreciate Willow, because Hunter loves and appreciates her, and she loves and appreciates Hunter in a way many of his fans were desperate to see after all of his suffering.

I love them. I love this show, it's like The Owl House but Lego which basically makes Lego Eda canon.

Okay, here's my opinions. I'll only say the major characters.

Mk = Baby boy, really self aware that he has issues but hasn't gone to therapy but for the love of god get therapy, abandonment issues. Pure of Heart, Dumb of Ass. He gives off Demiboy and Gay vibes.

Mei = She's so chaotic I love her. Also needs therapy. Will kill without hesitation and I love that. I really thought she and Mk are related but turns out they aren't? She gives off Demigirl and Lesbian vibes.

Pigsy = Mk's dad. So grumpy but he really loves his family. So protective, I stan. The moment I saw him the first thing I thought is; He's Bi.

Sandy = Himbo. Baby but Adult. Hides his trauma through kindness. He gives off AroAce vibes, but I respect people who ship him with the spider from his flower episode.

Tang = I was so sure that this guy was the bio dad of Mk and Mei, but they're not??? He's still a dad though, goofy and always hungry. His infodumping and fangirling over artifacts reminds me of some people in the Amphibia fandom. The moment I saw him how he acts towards the Spider Queen on her debut, I knew that this man is Gay.

Sun Wukong = Mk's dead beat dad. At least he tries to be a dad but sir stop fueling your son's abandonment issues. Trans and Pan.

Macaque = I was so sure that he and Wukong are biologically brothers but everyone says they're not??? I was so confused when I saw shipping art and fics of them. The cool and bastard uncle. He's like Louie from Ducktales but he has more issues. Pretty sure he's a dad now but so busy so he asks Pigsy to care of the child for him and makes sure he visits. Nb and DemiAce

Red Son = Chaotic Zuko. Major Daddy issues. If he ever dates Mk, he and Mei would annoy each other a lot. Trans, cause no sane person would ever name their son; Red Son. He's also Gay.

DBK and Princess Iron Fan = The only straight people in this series. They're suprisingly wholesome with each other and their son. Iron Fan has witnessed Red's transitioning and supports it while DBK didn't and is so confused but at least tries.

Spider Queen = First thing I thought is that she's a Lesbian. At least she has standards when it comes to villainy. I'm not really sure if she and her henchmen are still alive.

Jin and Yin = Love their dumbasses but I will never forgive them for making Mk and Mei straight in their debut episode. Pretty sure they don't care about gender and romance.

Ne Zha = Petal boy. He's so serious, sir take a break. I think he's Aro? I don't know, he gives off the vibes.

Bai He = Apperantly, this is the LBD's host's name. Good god, she's younger than I thought, I thought she's the same age as Mk. She needs so much therapy and hugs. And Also Macaque being her dad. I want to say that she's questioning her gender and sexuality since she's a kid and all.

Lady Bone Demon = Means well but wrong way to do it. Every time I see her I keep thinking; Mk's mom, and I hate it. Bisexual.

Well, considering the things that were revealed and developed, this was a surprisingly low-key episode! To be honest I kind of welcome that, considering how the previous episodes have been. That said, fairly solid overall, and I can see why Hunter is Dana's favorite. A less charitable summation of his character might be "What if Luz but white boy," but I think he has enough unique characteristics to stand out.

I'm also glad for the breather because I think Eda's Requiem is gonna hit pretty hard. Can't wait for that!

Well, Amity definitely has softened up, hasn’t she? It’s nice to see... what would be even nicer is if we got to see what’s on that lil pink note. She seemed rather panicky... what are the bets that it’s a love letter to Luz? She’s been getting real blushy and flustered as of late so I wouldn’t be surprised.

The Owl House, Season 1, Episode 1, First Impressions!

Let’s! Get! WEIRD!

Okay, so I’m noticing that all the kid’s cartoons I’ve been watching lately can be grouped into three categories sort by tone and style, with the main unifying feature being that they’re all adventure stories with casually diverse casts.

In one category, you’ve got the Netflix gang, where we have She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and The Hollow. Here, things are a blend of traditional western animation with noticeable anime influences and take place in colorful fantasy worlds with hopepunk themes.

Next is the Avatar gang, which is of course ATLA and The Dragon Prince and maybe one day Legend of Korra, which is much more anime-esque and tends to take place in mythology-inspired fantasy worlds that are very epic hero’s journey focused.

And finally, we have the Disney gang, which has Gravity Falls, Ducktales, and now The Owl House, where things are more wacky and weird with a strong focus on episodic adventures.

Like, I was very much expecting something more in the vein of She-Ra, given how much crossover there is between their fanbases, but as I was watching, I kept thinking, “Wow, this feels a lot like Gravity Falls. Luz is basically Mabel/Webby on slightly less crack, Eda gives me strong Grunkle Stan vibes if Stan was a witch MILF who was actually legit with the powers stuff, and hey, King sounds a LOT like Bill Cipher...”

Wait a minute, thinks I, is that ALEX HIRSCH?

Yup, it sure was, and I’m getting better at recognizing voice actors, go me!

Anyway, our story is about Luz, and as I said, she’s in the same vein as Mabel Pines and Webby VanderQuack, only on slightly less crack than the former and with fewer insecurities as the latter, and unlike the other two, she is the main character, so this promises to be...chaotic. 

Anyway, her aggressive...creativity (i.e. super weirdness) keeps getting her into trouble, so her mom decides to send her to a summer camp about how to be normal, and I know that’s a joke, but DAMN are the implications disturbing! Like, there’s a lot of similarities to real-life institutions intended to hammer out things that society considers deviations and...

Surely I don’t need to say it out loud. Jesus, Mom!

Anyway, before getting shipped off to be lobotomized or whatever, Luz’s favorite book is stolen by an owl, and in following it she Narnias herself into basically Weirdmaggedon world and meets Eda, a witch who makes a living hocking human goods. Which, to the incredibly weird Luz, is a dream come true! Finally she’s in a world that celebrates weirdness!

Except no, since the world is actually under the control of its own equivalent of the Weirdness Inquisition, which punishes non-conformity. Well, okay then. And Eda and her adorable Demon King buddy named...King needs Luz’s help just eking by.

Anyway, this is the pilot episode, and it’s purpose is to introduce the characters, setting, and basic premise, so there’s not a whole lot to really dig into just yet, except to say I like what’s going on and am looking forward to further exploring this world. The Warden I think is the best representation of what we can expect from this show, as there was so much about him that was genuinely unsettling and intimidating, but he was also really, really goofy.

So yeah, strong Gravity Falls vibes, and I am here for it!

Another note: okay, this is kind of embarrassing, but when we met the vampire girl who was in jail for writing fanfiction, I had to take a moment and tell myself, “I must not simp, I must not simp, I must not simp...”

Hey, we all have our types.

Also, interesting to note that Luz learning magic is less of the high school experience and more of an on-the-sly apprenticeship, and the Owl House is literally just Eda’s house. I have seen a lot of school-related screenshots, so we’ll see how that pans out.

And, uh, is Amity Blight gonna basically be Pacifica Northwest, only gay? Because that’s very much the impression I’m getting.

And Eda’s body parts falling off looks like it’s going to be one of my favorite running gags.

And finally, lol at giraffes actually being monsters who were exiled for being too weird. Are these guys also responsible for platypuses?
