Free Manual Wheelchair Reference Models

For disability pride month, I decided to release a pack of 3D manual wheelchair models.

The pack includes 5 wheelchairs:

2 Active urban-style chairs (one of which includes a smart drive)

1 off-road active chair

1 children's wheelchair

and 1 standard "hospital" wheelchair).

All the wheelchairs are based off either wheelchairs I or friends of mine have used

The first download link includes the original .Blend file with all 5 chairs, as well as individual .obj or .fbx files the chairs (All but 1 have an .obj file, as they're only meshes. The chair with the smart drive is rigged, which is why it has an .Fbx file instead so it will retain that information) as well as a "read me" file that explains in more depth what kind of disability/character/lifestyle each chair is made for (These are just what I had in mind when I designed them, they are usable by other characters who don't fit the suggestions for the most part!) I wanted to include the Read Me contents in the CSP Asset Store listing, but CS said it was too long lol.

Also, as the title says, these files are free to use! While it's not mandatory, I would appreciate credit if you use them (or even just a tag so I can see the cool art you make with them!!)

I actually made these ages ago, the original plan was to use them in a series of posts then release the pack, but I never got around to making the series and so they've just been sitting here. I took a day off from art fight attacks to clean them all up and get them ready to post. If you experience any issues, let me know and I'll try to fix it up.

I had a couple more that were supposed to be in the pack including a sports (basketball/Tennis) wheelchair and some different styles of wheelchair, but I think the files corrupted so once I fix (or remake) them, I'll probably make a second pack.

july is disability pride month, im a disabled artist and something ive noticed a lot in art online is how wheelchairs are drawn so i wanted to make a post for artists breaking down misconceptions about wheelchairs and showing yall some good references for what most wheelchair users chairs look like.

a lot of people tend to draw wheelchairs like this, which is okay... but these kinds of chairs are mostly used for temporary use (the kind you borrow at the airport, mall, hospital, etc). a lot of people who use their chairs very often or daily (ambulatory and fulltime wheelchair users) will have a chair that is fit to their body measurements, their chair is one of a kind for their body.

a lot of manual chairs look like this to allow easy movement and are lightweight so the user can independently take it apart and put it together. most have low backs and no armrests or handles. they're called active chairs.

other manual chairs may have handles (this one also has power assist wheels to make it easier to self-propel)

now we're onto power wheelchairs, like manual chairs there are different kinds for different needs. some have higher backs and headrests (for those with back issues, low muscle tone, upper body paralysis, etc).

other power chairs like this one have no headrest and are generally smaller.

there's definitely plenty of other kinds that i missed in this post, these are just the most commonly used wheelchairs. i hope that this will help able-bodied artists create more diverse and accurate art and also teach able-bodied people in general about wheelchairs.

I'm so happy you could join me in welcoming my friends from the north pole! We spend all four seasons getting ready for our Christmas Eve journey, which is my favorite flight of the year.

I love the night trips the best, because the stars don't sunburn my nose. But I still join any time there's long distance travel, because everyone has a gift they bring to help the whole team come together.

Some are fast, some are strong, some are smart, some caring, and some (like me) just really love geography! I plan our routes and navigate to make sure we reach every house on our list before the night is up. I hope you'll leave some carrots out for us on the roof!

they level 3 autistic (“requiring very substantial support”) with high support needs—meaning they cannot independently do most adaptive functioning skills, needing other people physical help to do/do for them. they also need 24/7 supervision & physical help for all iADLs & bADLs.

they nonverbal & use AAC full time. their AAC is symbol based speech generating device.

their (most likely [<haven’t decided] partner who act as their) disability caretaker is hyacinthos shinya🪻🌌.

they also full time non-ambulatory wheelchair user with very specific posture & seating positioning needs so not out of it for long or really much at all.

angel wing on back of wheelchair is power assist! is magically powered by hyacinthos (who angel) & can be powered even remotely / far away. way control wheelchair & power assist part by intuitive / hand motions & gestures / etc, part by halo hover above armrest that act as joystick. can use it like traditional joystick or wear as bracelet n control that way! (gimme it i want one) (if you recognize this setting it may be because previous version)

they do mix of self propel, power assist, & caregiver push. their wheelchair have stroller style push handle instead traditional push handle for easier caregiver push, especially one handed.

is set in magical world & they do some magic (< haven’t decided]!

top left is full character clothing (with wheelchair translucent in background) because in original there some key parts blocked by wheelchair especially arm rest.

skirt around waist have purple band with blue small ruffles. center have rainbow bow with rainbow star on top.

n also have front n back of AAC device. what drawn here is 5x7 grid with various colored squares showing different parts of speech but grid size more so because like. is how much could fit comfortably. so even when redraw n isn’t exact 5x7 with colors exactly right where is right now, is okay. colors & where they are based on own AAC device >:) because of course

design of aac device case basically same as above. back side just have bigger clouds. oh also device has handles. tho it float around so handles get used less. float around so don’t have worry about how to carry it how to mount on wheelchair etc etc etc it follows you it automatic come to your hand when you wanna say something (kinda also acting as prompting bc sometimes think about say something but don’t actually say in device) it get out way when you don’t want it. if only like this irl lol

The Paralympics start Today!

I wanted to celebrate by continuing Australia's tradition of using (definitely not) furry characters to represent our athletes lol. Wheelchair basketball was my sport back when i was playing, so i have a soft spot for it, and Australia's women's team are The Gliders, so i went with a basketball playing sugar-glider character!

I had plans to do a few more characters for different para-sports before the Paralympics end but things have come up and I'm not sure I'll have the time for more, but I really want to!

On a little side note I thought about while drawing this, having a long tail (movable or not) would be a nightmare in both wheelchair basketball and rugby lol - you aren't supposed to hit people from behind but it does inevitably happen a lot, quite aggressively, and even tucking the tail underneath the frame wouldn't protect all of it in a collision.

Thank u all sosososo much for all the love on my drawing of Red!! Here is another little doodle of him, just for you 😘

Some little infos since people have been asking: yes, he can fly and move his tail! His wheelchair is super light so it doesn't weigh him down, though he usually only flies for short differences. I keep oscillating between making him the size of a St Bernard or bigger, like 4 feet from the ground to his shoulders... I haven't decided that yet 😅
