TOO MANY HUSBANDS

The Gulf Screen Guild Theater present  Wesley Ruggles’ Too Many Husbands, which was a 1940 Columbia Pictures release.

Synopsis ~ Vicky Lowndes (Lucille Ball) loses her first husband, Bill Cardew (Bob Hope), in a boating accident in which he is presumed drowned. The lonely widow is comforted by Bill's best friend and publishing business partner Henry Lowndes (Frank Sinatra). Six months later, she marries him. Six months after that, Bill shows up, after having been stranded on a uninhabited island and then rescued. Vicky has a tough choice to make.

The Screen Guild Theater (aka The Screen Guild Players), was one of the most popular drama anthology series during the Golden Age of Radio. At this point it is being sponsored by Gulf Oil. From its first broadcast in 1939, up to its farewell in 1952, it showcased radio adaptations of popular Hollywood films. Many Hollywood names became part of the show, including Bette Davis, Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and many more. The actors’ fees were all donated to the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an organization that provides aid to retired actors. Screen Guild Theater was heard on different radio networks, beginning with CBS from 1939 to 1948, NBC from 1948 to 1950, ABC from 1950 to 1951, and back to CBS until its last episode on June 29, 1952. Throughout its run, a total of 527 episodes were produced.

The radio show brought movies to radio for thirty minutes each Monday evening on CBS. The show aired for 242 programs beginning with “Yankee Doodle Dandy” starring James Cagney and ending with “My Reputation.” In between were all time classics such as “Casablanca” with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, “Sergeant York” with Gary Cooper and “Holiday Inn” with Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, and Dinah Shore.

The Screen Guild Players previously broadcast an adaptation of “Too Many Husbands” on March 8, 1942 starring Hedy Lamar, Bob Hope, and Bing Crosby. On September 4, 1944 yet another version was aired by the Players, starring Donna Reed, Frank Sinatra, and Bill Goodwin. 

Too Many Husbands (1940) was produced and directed by Wesley Ruggles, with a screenplay by Claude Binyon. The film stars Jean Arthur, Fred MacMurray and Melvyn Douglas, and is based on the 1919 play Home and Beauty by W. Somerset Maugham, which was retitled Too Many Husbands when it came to New York.  The story is a variation on the 1864 poem Enoch Arden by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In the UK, the film was released as My Two Husbands. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Sound Recording. Too Many Husbands was remade as a musical, Three for the Show (1955), with Jack Lemmon and Betty Grable. 

Two of the film’s background players, Bert Stevens and James Conaty, were later seen in as extras on “I Love Lucy.” Sam McDaniel (brother of Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniel of Gone With the Wind), plays a porter, just as he will do on “I Love Lucy,” becoming the first black actor to have lines on the series. Star Fred MacMurray will appear with Lucille Ball in “Lucy Hunts Uranium” in 1958. 

RADIO CAST

Lucille Ball (Vickie) plays the role originated in the film by Jean Arthur. In April 1947, Ball was awaiting the release of two films: Lured and Her Husband’s Affairs.  

Bob Hope (Bill) plays the role originated in the film by Fred MacMurray. Hope had just released the film My Favorite Brunette. Hope and Ball would do four films together, staring in 1949 with Sorrowful Jones. 

Frank Sinatra (Henry) plays the role originated in the film by Melvyn Douglas. Sinatra had just released the film It Happened in Brooklyn on April 7, 1947. Primarily a singer, this is the only time he acts opposite Lucille Ball. 

Truman Bradley (Announcer) was selected by Henry Ford to be the announcer for the “Ford Sunday Evening Hour”. With his distinctive, authoritative voice, he soon became a radio actor as well as a narrator in numerous movies. Bradley was the radio announcer for shows by Red Skelton, Burns and Allen, and Frank Sinatra. 

Peter, the Butler is played by an uncredited performer. 

‘TOO MANY’ TRIVIA!

The title is easily confused with the title of Lucille Ball’s radio series “My Favorite Husband,” and her films Too Many Girls, and Her Husband’s Affairs. 

Lucille Ball also appeared with Screen Guild Players in “Tight Shoes” (April 12, 1942), “Nothing But the Truth” (May 3, 1943), and “A Night To Remember” (May 1, 1944). 

From late 1942 to July 1947 Lady Esther Cosmetics sponsored the show which had been previously sponsored by Gulf Oil. It was first known as the “Lady Esther Presents the Screen Guild Players” and then became "The Lady Esther Screen Guild Theater.” 

As is his penchant, Hope ad libs during the script. While hugging Vickie upon his return from the ‘dead’, he says “Let’s just stay like this till ‘Take it or Leave It’ comes on the air!”  “Take It or Leave It” was a radio quiz show, which ran from April 1940 to July 1947 on CBS. It switched to NBC in 1947, and in September 1950, the name of the program was changed to “The $64 Question.”  Hope often flubs his dialogue, but covers with comedy. 

Bill (or maybe it is Bob ad libbing) mentions Dorothy Dix. Author Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer (1861-1951) was widely known by the pen name Dorothy Dix. As the forerunner of today’s popular advice columnists, Dix was America’s highest paid and most widely read female journalist at the time of her death. Her advice on marriage was syndicated in newspapers around the world with an estimated audience of 60 million readers.

Bill (or maybe it is Bob ad libbing) wonders why Vickie married Henry: “Did you lose a question on “Truth or Consequences?” “Truth or Consequences” was a game show originally hosted on NBC radio by Ralph Edwards (1940–1957), although it also was later seen on television. 

Bill (or maybe it is Bob ad libbing) says that the mattress on the bed that he and Henry have to share feels like it has been stuffed with Grape-Nuts. Grape-Nuts is a breakfast cereal developed in 1897 by C. W. Post. Post originally developed the product as a batter that came from the oven as a rigid sheet, which was then broken into pieces and run through a coffee grinder to produce the "nut"-sized kernels.

The first commercial break advertises Lady Esther’s four-purpose face cream.  In these live commercials, the spokeswoman in known as Lady Esther, although she was not the actual Esther Cohen that the cosmetics line was named for. 

Bob Hope ad-libs about his “Pepsodent contract”.  Hope hosted “The Pepsodent Show” from September 1938 to June 1948. The program also featured Jerry Colonna along with Blanche Stewart and Elvia Allman as well as a continuously rotating supporting cast and musicians which included Desi Arnaz and his orchestra.

Henry tells Bill he should leave and join the Foreign Legion. Bill replies that he’ll meet him halfway by going to the library and reading Beau Geste. Beau Geste is an adventure novel by P. C. Wren, which details the adventures of three English brothers who enlist separately in the French Foreign Legion following the theft of a valuable jewel from the country house of a relative. Published in 1924, the novel has been adapted for the screen several times: 1926, 1939, and 1966. 

Henry asks Bill (Bob) if he can spell “pithecanthropus" and defines it a the missing link between man and ape. Bob (Bill) replies “C.R.O.S.B.Y”!  Bing Crosby was a singer that partnered with Hope on dozens of films, particularly their “road” films.  In April 1947, Crosby had just appeared in a cameo role in Hope’s newest film, My Favorite Brunette. By the end of 1947, The Road to Rio will be released.  Coincidentally, in the 1942 Screen Guild production, Crosby played Henry, the role taken here by Sinatra. 

Just before Vickie breaks it to Henry that she’d rather be married to Bill, Henry (or maybe it is Crosby) sings “Time After Time” (1946), a romantic ballad by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne, written for Sinatra to introduce in the 1947 film It Happened in Brooklyn, which had premiered two weeks earlier.  In return, in the very next scene, Bob Hope warbles a few notes of “Thanks for the Memory”, his signature song. 

At the end, Lucille Ball thanks the Motion Picture Relief Fund and it’s country house. In 1940, Jean Hersholt, then-president of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, found 48 acres of walnut and orange groves in the southwest end of the San Fernando Valley to build the Motion Picture Country House. The dedication was on September 27, 1942. The Motion Picture Hospital was dedicated on the grounds of the Country House in 1948.

The final commercial, once again delivered by ‘Lady Esther’ is for Lady Esther Bridal Pink Face Powder. 

‘TOO MANY’ CLOSING CREDITS

The announcer (Truman Bradley) promotes next week’s program, Stork Bites Man, starring Jackie Cooper, Anita Louise, and Gus Schilling.  

Stork Bites Man was a United Artists film that would not be released until June 1947. It also starred Cooper and Schilling. 

Columbia Pictures is credited as the producer of The Guilt of Janet Ames, starring Rosalind Russell and Melvyn Douglas. Coincidentally, Douglas starred in the film version of Too Many Husbands. 

The music was arranged and conducted by Wilbur Hatch, who also did the same for “My Favorite Husband” and “I Love Lucy.”

By the way, do professional voice actors learn in vocational schools? I support him to become a voice actor, but I'm not sure if it's the right decision to enroll in a vocational school to become a voice actor.

With xenoblade 2 probably the last game I buy this year. I can confirm that 2017 is the greatest year for a nintendo fan. On les than 9 month I played more than 11 physical games and some digital only games.

March was the month of the beginning of the nintendo switch. Playing 1-2-switch with curious friends and family and having fun.

Meanwhile showing how powerfull it is with playing zelda in handheld modus and playing 100 hours in it doing everything except saving zelda.

For variation saving a bizarre worlds by playing with blocks and slime in puyo puyo tetris with great art and a funny story mode. The amount of laughters I did were more than the great scala of playable characters.

After that it was serious buisness in may with mario kart 8 deluxe getting all 3-stars in all modes and participating in a tournement sponsered by our local gamestore with 50 entrees. Only to be second and losing to someone who only owns the Wii U one. *Ouch*

Extending the competitive scene was arms with a fighting game only nintendo kan make. First time playing and instantly choosing max difficulty made it a though game. Only played for a month though. Because i took aim for the next release

July it was all about ink and sauces in Splatoon 2 with new stages new hosts and new story. Up beat music with our favorite cartoony sea creature and we forget this is a post apocalypse shooter.

August was the game that surprised me the most with Mario+Rabbids kingdom battle. The tactical strategy game I love to play with the Mario world including Rabbids is an bizarre combination that worked amazingly good. Most memorable moment was the roast of Mario by the phantom of the bwerphra. Shame on me still need to complete the 2nd part of the last world. In September I bought Pokkén Tournement  DX loved it on the Wii U. Unfortunately I didn’t play it because of school and the next game took all of the spare I have to play. Someday I will reclaim mine throne of best Belgian player.

Fire emblem warriors came luckily out on the moment of vacation so I could play it out in a week. A mouso fire emblem game is a dream that come true. I loved it only complain I had was the focus on awakening and fates. I want to berserk with Hactor dammit. 

It only took a week and the next great game came out. For months I got the poppy song Of Jump Up Super star in my head. The game was amazing throwing caps, possessing enemy’s and pressing buttons so that you can jump as far as possible. I really liked the worlds except the cooking one I hated that one. 

Finally When December began I bought the collectors edition of Xenoblade chronicles 2 the last and probably the best game of 2017. It has only been 5 days and The only thing I did was playing 60 hours in it. Japanese voice acting, nice movieclips, amazing movies, great locations and so far an great story.  Xenoblade has it all.  And these are only the physical ones.  Now it is patiently waiting for the next direct for the games comming in 2018.

American Shithole #19 — 500 Days of Bummer

I don’t want this summer to be a bummer. Last year was the Summer of Puppy where Stella stepped in to fill the void of a loss so terrible, I still can’t write about her — my sweet Layla. That summer though, followed 365 days less Trump. That is decidedly less Trump.

Those days are hell and gone.

Is anyone else feeling a little out of gas after 500 days of Trump? I sure am. This is all so spectacularly gross; and taxing. Turd sandwich after turd sandwich makes my tummy ache. Another day? Another turd sandwich. Check the midday news? Turd Sandwich. Did you choke down that turd sandwich too fast? Well never you mind, here’s the evening news with a shit milkshake to wash it down.

Mm, tastes like Giuliani.

But alas, we must carry on; forward we push, on to the pressing questions of the week!

Now that I have been proven horribly wrong in my prediction that Scott Pruitt would lose his job long ago, I figure it’s time to get back to my seer's roots. Back to a source that has never let me down. Back to the Oracle, baby. Let’s consult the Magic 8-Ball for (answers) to this week’s big questions. Here we go:

1.      Did the dick dictator dictate? (It is decidedly so.)

2.      Will Mueller’s investigation gather any high-hanging fruit before our collective will to live is extinguished? (Ask again later.)

3.      Did this administration — via inaction and gross negligence — effectively murder thousands of Americans in Puerto Rico? (You may rely on it.)

4.      Will there be another school shooting between now and five minutes from now? (Outlook not so good.)

5.      Did Jefferson Sessions commandeer a former Walmart with blacked-out windows to house the hundreds of children he has separated from their mothers and fathers, and was a U.S. Senator from Oregon barred from entering that detention center for migrant children, with the officials on site going so far as to call the local police on the Senator? (Signs point to yes.)

What the fuck, Jeffery?

6.      And finally, when adrift at sea — a sea of lying liars — is there an island I can float away to, somewhere I can play the fucking ukulele all day long, and spend my nights looking up at the stars? Preferably an island that isn’t on fire as it is mercilessly ravaged by rivers of molten lava? (My sources say no, loser!)

Hey, wait a minute. I’m pretty sure that last one’s not an official Magic 8-Ball answer…

Whatever, 8-Ball. It’s a geyser of bullshit in Washington, America. I’ve watched enough CNN in 500 days to drown myself in it. I can say with confidence, if it weren’t for the deplorables, we would have flushed this guy already.

“Surely his base must tire?” I have asked a thousand times.

“Surely their reality must be tethered to some distant lamppost in their conspiracy-addled minds that can still illuminate the truth?” I’ve cried.

“Surely enough of these mono-browed, knuckle-dragging troglodytes will cease spelunking their own assholes for five fucking minutes; just long enough to catch wind of the geyser of fucking bullshit erupting from the White House?”

For far too many, it seems not. These modern day zombies may prove to be the end of us.

And with the lying from everyone involved within this administration being so effectively pervasive, so ubiquitous and insidiously destructive, I can’t even bring myself to watch Giuliani or Sanders spin the president’s words and actions this week. It’s too much. It’s just too damn much.

Uncle.

Oh, and can someone please find Bill Clinton’s handler and fire that worthless sack of shit for not keeping Bill the fuck off television? Jesus fucking Christ, can someone please keep the fucking Clintons off the goddamn television? Hey Bill, hey Hillary, shut the fuck up!

He is literally like the grandfather that comes to Thanksgiving and  — during the huge family row — takes his fucking pants off. We have important family issues Pepaw; put your fucking pants back on and shut the fuck up!

You’re on a book tour, because you wrote a book — a work of fiction I might add — with your buddy James Patterson, that no one wants to read while the country is ON FIRE, and you answer questions about Lewinski, sounding tone-deaf as shit about apologies, you stupid, insensate, doddering old lecher!

I am having one of those days, one of those “poor me” days. I was so frustrated and angry this morning — mostly due to chronic pain (for which I do my very best to keep a positive attitude, about 99 percent of the time) — and my temper flared, and I scared the dogs. So I have been feeling like shit about that all afternoon.

I woke up to my foot in puppy poop because someone had too many human dinner treats last night. It went downhill from there.

Here’s the thing about stepping in poop — it’s much worse with just a sock. The sock/poop combo really brings home the experience.

It’s just been one of those days.

It’s been one of those days where every outcome was somehow annoying — everyday tasks proved unnaturally difficult — and the walls felt like they were leaning in on me, trying to trip me, or throw me off balance, every time I’d round a corner. It’s been a day of obstacles and irritants. Every outside stimuli one would normally dismiss, was a buzzing bee, or a blaring siren.

Today was a buzz hassle. Today was a bummer.

As my friend Awyn put it in a private group this morning where I expressed dismay regarding my bummer predicament:  

“This seems like a pretty common occurrence for the average American. Most of us have no money and tons of debt and we either do shitty jobs that kill us a little more every minute, or we starve and die more quickly. Government doesn't care which, so long as we are quiet about it.”

America's new slogan: Get Busy Dying. “We took the one from Shawshank and shortened it.”

All I know is, being able to see a doctor when you're sick shouldn’t be the pot of gold at the end of the American rainbow. I just want to be able to see the right doctor — like many, many Americans. That’s it. I can handle the rest.

Yet apparently we ask too much of our country’s billionaires — who have fought universal healthcare tooth and nail with hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of their filthy dollars over decades.

Healthier people are unfortunately happier people; and happy people don’t fear the bogeyman. For obscene wealth inequality to work, billionaires need lots of bogeymen — and of course, lots of terrified poor people.   

Wasn’t it Christopher Hitchens who marveled that there are groups of Americans whom actually believe we aren’t awful enough to each other?

My medical adventure hasn’t yet reached a satisfactory or unsatisfactory conclusion — I am in Limbo — worried about insurance and coverage and pain and death and surgeries and recovery like so, so very many Americans. I won’t be pulling the trigger on American Shithole’s take on healthcare just yet; but I long to tell that story. I hope it ends well. Before it ends.

My experience so far is that every institution I have come in contact with involved in healthcare — from the pharmaceutical companies, to the insurance companies, to the hospital boards, as well as many of the doctors and the nurses — everyone involved is gaming the system.

None of them have your best interests, first.

Coming to this pitiful realization has siphoned my reservoir of hope more than Trump ever will. The disregard for the Hippocratic Oath in America — particularly regarding the opioid crisis — is at its heart, a betrayal by the scientific community. Greed apparently knows no boundaries. That’s what saddling healthcare with capitalism brings. Capitalism unleashes greed on our most desperate hour.

Our cruelty and indifference to our sick, our disabled, our dying, is appalling.

Anyway, back to the giant orange idiot, and how much he clearly does not give a fuck. I am starting to sense that Komàndant Bonespurs has pivoted from his “zero fucks given” default position at the outset of his presidency, to a somewhat more revved-up, 500+ days “negative fucks” attitude.

What’s the biggest story of the week — did daddy tell junior what to say about the Ruskies?

What was his response? He’s got Guiliani on television saying he can shoot the former head of the fucking FBI. Yep, put that one in the history books. He doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks or says at this point.

Are you numb yet?

Sure, legally it matters if he dictated the lies about the Trump Tower meeting that involved his son, but I’m not confident it matters in any sense involving the opinions of his base. With all the chum his legal team and the White House staff are heaving into the waters, the deplorables can feast for years without any need to belabor the facts — while the rest of us slowly drown in an ocean of deceit.

They are pirates on the high seas of American democracy, these filthy swashbucklers, riding the ugliest wave of populism since the 1930s. I look out on to the ocean that is America, and I dream of a blue tsunami — and yet all I see is Lady Liberty walking the plank.

What's on the horizon for America, you ask? Undiscovered country.

Will anyone bring these privateers to justice before it’s too late? Let’s ask the Magic 8-Ball one last time. (Don't count on it.)

  "There are three different routes for walks, all well signposted along the way: the blue trail is the smallest and is only half a mile long; the red trail is two miles long; and the yellow trail is the longest at two and a half miles long. We have walked all of them and the dogs have thoroughly enjoyed each of them.   We most commonly use the red trail, as there is a river that runs alongside the path for the entire walk. There is also a 'pool', which is generally deep enough for the dogs to swim in. A really nice place, which can be busy at times. Dogs can be off lead for the entire walk and there are plenty of interesting bits for them to explore and have fun. There is a field about half way round the red walk, which is grassy and never has livestock in it so is ideal for throwing a ball for the dogs."

Spring Break Cancun 2017

Spring Break Cancun has become one of the top clubbing destinations in 2017 in the world! Spring Break Cancun is a must, but it does have a price. February 27th to March 4th, 2017 It’s a good week because it’s the one when more Canadians and Quebecers as well as Brazilians and Argentinians are also starting to arrive. The Cancun Spring Break is in full swing with great atmosphere.

March 4th to 18th March, 2017 The most intense weeks of Spring Break, people are coming from all around the globe, Americans, Canadians, Brazilians, Colombians, Argentines, very international atmosphere. Undoubtedly the most active Spring Break periode, but it’s also the two weeks that the more international artists will perform in clubs.

March 18th to April 2nd, 2017 At that period of time population is mainly from South America, they are very open and accessible, it is a period also great for the closing of Spring Break.

Clubs in Cancun

The « superclubs » as Coco Bongo, Daddy O, The City and can accommodate all of them several thousand people and offer the very best in entertainment content. It goes something new every minute, entertainment, dancers, acrobats, giant video screens, the famous bikini contest, mimes, lookalikes…

The City The City is one large room accommodating up to 10,000 people, with funky lights playing. It was very large and very well-conditioned, to the point of being cold at first! The City welcomes all the big acts during the Spring Break Cancun: Tiesto, Avicci, Chuckie, David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, The Game etc. The entrance is around 65 USD including free bar, unless you take shots of whisky … but it has the taste of honey. The resources deployed for security are huge and very strict. The servers are competent. Preference for beach side part with the pool which is much more fun, also you will quickly see that after a time everyone leaves the main club … to go where? Well, behind to continue the party at the pool!

Daddy’O Daddy’O is incontestably one of the best nightclubs in Cancun and was referenced as one of the three best nightclubs in America. Its innovative design is based on a fascinating cave which after millions of years in the deepest pits of the Caribbean Sea, is emerging in the heart of Cancun, Mexico. Daddy’O offers a wide range of mashups during the Spring Break Cancun. Daddy’O world has known DJs, laser shows, special effects, wild parties, bikini contests, competition swimwear, theme nights and more. Six bars are Strategically Placed around the nightclub, Offering easy access to open bar serving our area and at several levels of access tables. Drinks all night long. No additional coverage. Coco Bongo Nightclub with show from 23h to 3am, with different themes all very well prepared and original, the box remains open after the show. Not to be missed even during the Spring Break! The boats leave from the hotel district of Cancun every 30 minutes until 10pm. With the help of one of the numerous travel agencies in Cancun you will be able to participate at the most awesome trip you have ever been to - Isla Mujeres is totally worth a visit! You can also rent a scooter or a golf car to discover the Mexican island in an extraordinary way. Access to the island is guaranteed during the whole year and highly recommended during the period of Cancun's Spring Break. Both wild and charming, Isla Mujeres shows you its authentic nature far away from the rest of the world. The beaches of the island aren't influenced by the huge luxurious hotels like in Cancun. You rather find little snack bars by the seaside that offer you seafood and cocktails. If you want to live pirate atmosphere you can fallow the traces of an ancient hacienda. Or you just take a walk through the peace- and colorful cemetery where the inhabitants of Isla Mujeres are buried. You can also visit Garrfon Park, a natural aquarium where you can go snorkeling to see the vestiges of an old temple and its present residents: turtles! In the end there is nothing more to say than: Isla Mujeres is totally worth a trip to admire its beautiful nature and to recharge your party batteries during Spring Break Cancun in Mexico.

Chichen Itza During your stay at Cancun's Spring Break we advice you to take a break in between to nights of celebrating to go on several trips around the wonderful riviera of the Mayan people, for example the archeological site Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza in Mexico is a Mayan archaeological site, one of the largest in Mexico and ranked among the 7 new Wonders of the World. Beautiful and amazing! You will be amazed by its enormous size and the huge number of constructions which are acknowledged as world cultural heritage by the UNESCO in 1988. Located 3 hours from Cancun between the cities of Mérida and Valladolid your trip leads you through the spectacular countryside of Mexico right to Chichen Itza. Though it takes some time to get there, it is totally worth it! Trips to Chichen Itza with departure from Cancun and even from the Oasis Hotel are offered on a regular base. Ideal thing to do after a great party for you can sleep in the coach to wake up refreshed at the site. You should definitely take part in this adventure during Spring Break Cancun. A little culture never killed nobody!

Tulum Tulum in Mexico is a world famous Mayan archaeological site (1200-1500 AC). It is surrounded by a great wall nearly 10 feet high and 23 feet thick. Because of its location above the sea Tulum is a worldwide known Mayan site in the Caribbean Sea: you will contemplate the pyramids in the background with the turquoise Caribbean Sea, just beautiful! Tulum lies about 80 miles away from Cancun so you should plan a whole day for your trip. Besides historical buildings you can admire the beautiful beaches of Tulum, definitely one of the most beautiful beaches of Mexico or even the world. Fun fact: A whole season of “Temptation Island”, an American television reality program had been shot here. Many scenes take place at “Diamante K”, a resort nearby.
