Thoughts on recent Young Justice seasons? I first followed you back in the day because of the show, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the latest seasons!

I HAVE NOT WATCHED PAST SEASON TWO ACTUALLY SO I DO NOT HAVE ANY THOUGHTS RIGHT NOW AT THIS TIME :'( tbh i just can't motivate myself to get back into it... it doesn't seem like artemis is getting ESPECIALLY good content and she would be the only reason i'd check in with all the kids (adults?!) again.

the characters i was most invested in were artemis, kaldur, and bart, so if they aren't getting some strong writing i miiiight not revisit it? i am content to just hear the juicy bits from my trusted pal nate legendofjustice. he keeps me abreast of the important developments. like kaldur's BOYFRIEND!!!!!!!!

i really hope it's been fun to be in on the adventure again, though. :) sorry i don't have more thrilling thoughts to share... other than that kaldur has a BOYFRIEND and i LIKE THAT!

Okay I saw that you saw Encanto and I'm dying to talk about it with anyone at all times, so I gotta hear your thoughts on it now. It's my new favorite Disney film, it's so relatable at times.

Dare I ask about the new SU news?

So the show is finishing off (I guess) with a miniseries called “Steven Universe Future” (very anime!) that will serve as an epilogue to the series. So not exactly the full “season six” we thought we’d be getting, but still more SU stuff, they released the opening sequence for it today. Don’t know how long it will be but like a fool I continue to hope.

Can we talk about how dumb of a writing choice it is to make her have a mage sister to "justify" her prejudice in the narrative? I really hate that, bc I think that the intention was to make her cruelty "come from somewhere" and I really hate how mages are scapegoated in this narrative for a the whole "grey morality" nonsense. No sometimes bigots are bigots just because, and they don't have to have a family member of the oppressed group they hate to justify their violence.

Also like I know what they were going for but they did not succeed because instead of it reading like this tragic example of why templars are needed, it’s Meredith looking at a corrupt and abusive system and deciding it’s her sister’s fault for being too weak for it

@whichwitchery : right? this is a thing that bugs me sooo much as well. like my first quizzie who romanced him did all the stuff he didn’t like. like all of it. but you could still romance him which is kinda fucked up even if we’re not looking at the big picture here. (rivalmance 2.0 if you want. I will never get why they thought this was a good idea...) but still if you talk to him personally? you can’t disagree with him. you can’t tell him to fuck off and leave you alone. I mean I can at least punch solas’ entitled ass but nope, nothing for our precious darling boy who is just soooo misunderstood and a good person now uwu yeah right -.- (seriously if he had actually shown SOME kind of remorse I would’ve maybe be able to see past all the shit but he doesn’t) I feel like they made him leave the templars just so they could pretend he changed. but does he speak out against the templars? no. he wants you to choose them of course because all mages are evil. seriously if they’re going to put him in the next game I will freaking lose my shit.

@danteh-ow: yeah and I completely get that! I mean he is not a templar anymore so he can’t be that bad and they just put all the Alistair romance stuff into his romance (like cute, dorky, a bit shy but very sweet) and it just works especially for people who don’t know the other games (I actually have a friend who had the exact same experience as you) and I even get if people who first played Inquisition and romanced him, then played the other games but still love Cullen. because you’re practically being forced to overlook all of his bullshit and you tend to do that with characters you liked at first. that’s just normal. (especially if you’re not like suuuper invested in the mage/templar debate or anything)

Since you are the scholar of all things Spiderman, do you know what subjects spidey and college friends majored in? And if mot stated in canon, what do you think they majored as?

Sure! You can mostly puzzle out what everyone did, even in the cases where it’s not directly stated, because college-era Spider-Man is less about pursuing education and more about Peter and his beautiful friends (and Harry) hooking up in various combinations.

Unless otherwise mentioned, everyone attended the fictional Empire State University. 

Peter: Peter attended college on a science scholarship. His specific major is never really made a big deal of, but there’s this bit from Spectacular Spider-Man #36 which identifies it as biophysics:

Peter attended and later dropped out of grad school, which caused a huge rift between him and Aunt May. He returned a number of years later… only to drop out again. He does technically have a doctorate, but it was obtained in his name by Otto Octavius during Superior Spider-Man.

Gwen: Also a science major! I have no idea if it’s ever narrowed down a little more than that. 

Both Gwen and Peter took classes under Professor Miles Warren, professor of biochemistry, which is notable because Miles Warren would later go on to create clones of Gwen and Peter. So many clones. Just….. so many clones. 

Mary Jane: MJ’s sometimes cited as a year younger than the rest of the group, and her introduction to the college fivesome isn’t through ESU but through her acquaintance with Peter. It would make sense for her, at this time, to be taking drama classes.

She dropped out and ended up pursuing modeling as a full time career. After the loss of their baby, she and Peter both returned to ESU, him as a grad student and her as an undergrad. Her major was psychology.

She later dropped out of ESU again when new modeling opportunities came up and she admitted to herself that that was where her true passions were.

Harry: If Harry’s major was ever mentioned, I…….. did not save any mention it. We see him in science classes with Gwen and Peter, but given he’s the heir to Oscorp, it would also make sense for him to be a business major. 

Anyway I do know that he once started a fight at a frat party and Peter, of course, jumped in.

Flash: Flash, like Peter, attended ESU on a scholarship – his was an athletic one. (Notably college is when Flash and Peter start to become friends through their mutual friendships with Gwen.) He then went onto enlist in Adjust Your Sliding Timescale For Appropriate War (Vietnam, originally).

I thought Flash had later graduated, but I’ve been following @bipeteparker‘s Spider-Man read tweets and this panel came up, so perhaps not:

Oh my god thank you for that post about Fiona! One of the things I hate most about the canon narrative and the DA fandom is how disresptful everyone is of Fiona, who is a fucking badads and needs to be appreciated more. Everyone does talk to her like she's a petulant child, and not the goddamn leader and war hero she is and deserving of respect. This fandom I swear to god. Top 5 video game crushes!

fun question!! :D :D :D here they are in no particular order:

1) Phoenix Wright aka Nick aka Human Disaster (Ace Attorney): he helps people no one else believes in and is also a huge dork. therefore, i love him. he’d probably also make me chicken noodle soup when i’m sick.

2) Guybrush Threepwood (Monkey Island): he’s also a huge dork (see phoenix wright above) and just wants to be a pirate. is also pretty smart??? and witty. the undead pirate arch enemy might be a problem though.

3) SYMMETRAAAAA (Overwatch): she sits on a stool and watches as she obliterates the enemy with her turrets. TOO COOL. TOO SUAVE. also she’s the prettiest girl in the game YOU CAN FIGHT ME ON THIS.

4) Maya Fey (Ace Attorney): we’d eat hamburgers together and stuff. that would be fun. but i think she’s taken by @i-am-a-panda so...

5) Glasses Character: so like... i play visual novels sometimes and i ALWAYS try to get the glasses character ending first. because i’m all about those glasses...

I'm mostly confused at ppl thinking JUST NOW that rose quartz is awful. like, y'all were still stanning for rose? (still not as bad as the ppl who are now excusing the diamonds. like, what.)

I know I said no more su discourse but I’ve seen a few things on my dash that have bothered me so I just want to clarify- I think there’s a world of difference between “not a good person” and “an impossible-to-sympathize-with trashfire”. I’m fine with Rose being a Bad Person, but I also wanted to be able to sympathize with parts of her, and I’ll find that pretty impossible now. I honestly just think Pink Diamond is the least interesting thing they coulda done with the “not a good person” angle. I could be proven wrong! It could end up blowing me away! But those are my feelings for NOW.

I also, again, dislike how this takes away Pearl’s agency. Her story could still be resolved well, but I much preferred the idea of her being a renegade in the war. 

The idea of a revolution being led by an oppressor who lied to the rebels who thought they were fighting her, who DIED for that lie, meaning it was just another link in a long chain of exploitation, also doesn’t sit well, though if handled with nuance the idea could be extremely dark and interesting. But I dunno if I can expect a kid’s show to go as dark as I’d need that story to be. We’ll see though! We sure will! At least Sapphire’s mad! She should be!

I heard you mentioned that Adrien/Marinette went down the tubes. I stopped watching the show a while ago, and I've heard some vague misogynistic crap happened without knowing the details, but dare I ask what went wrong with the show?

where to start

well let’s just focus on the romance

So the show starts with a typical shojo love square. So far so good, you have four different angles to tackle the same relationship thanks to secret identities. Girl crushes on boy who crushes on her alter ego, she’s not romantically interested, while boy crushes on alter ego while he is not romantically interested in because he’s already crushin... you get the idea.

Season one has its flaws, the epìsodes are out of order and the “origins/first meeting” that kickstarts their feelings is aired at the end of the season. But nothing that can’t be ironed out.

At this point you have a pretty strong hero bond. Chat flirts with Ladybug, she playfully tells him no, he’s not overly pushy. They care about each other very much. On the civillian side, Marinette has difficulties acting normal in front of Adrien but she’s slowly loosening up, so they are moving towards a friendship. 

So what happens next? Well you’d expect them their relationship to progress. And in some episodes of season 2 and 3, it does. Sorta.

Until the show hits the reset button and Marinette acts more and more like a stalker and Chat gets more and more petty every time Ladybug rejects his advances. We are not back to square one, we are out of the board. 

To mantain the status quo, it cannot progress. Marinette needs to still have a comical crush on Adrien which sometimes borders on humilliating. Adrien needs to send her soft looks while being comically oblivious and insisting to anybody who listens that she’s just a friend. Ladybug needs to see Chat as nothing more than a friend and reject his advances. And Chat needs to be infatuated with Ladybug and constantly make a move no matter how many time he’s rejected. It doesn’t matter if there’s progress in one episode, it will go back to status quo by the next (the out of order episodes don’t help)

At first, the only “love rival” is Chloe, who is so cartoonishly mean she’s not even taken seriously. On the other side you have Nino crushing on Marinette for one episode. At the end of season 1 we get Lila, who is maybe even worse than Chloe.

That’s two girls with practically no redeeming qualities that hate our female protagonist vs one sweet boy that is bff with the male protagonist and IDK if it even counts cause his crush lasts for one episode.

Moving on...

Season 2 introduces the “serious” love rivals, who honestly feel like they came right out of a kdrama. We have the cold on the outside sweet on the inside, rich, kind, no-nonsense and beautiful Kagami who crushes on Adrien. At first she seems to not like Marinette at all but warms up to her eventually; and “came straight out of a perfect boyfriend catalogue” Luka, who crushes on Marinette and is totally cool with Adrien. Both Adrien and Marinette seem receptive to their advances, but their feelings for their respective crushes don’t let them act on it. That’s it, until the season finale of season three where they both seem to move on from Ladybug/Adrien.

So what’s the issue?

Well the main issue is that we were already told Marinette and Adrien end up together so Luka and Kagami are at best the path for our heroes to mature in their feelings, at worst tools for misunderstanding and jealousy shenanigans. 

But Gabz, you may say, Adrien and Marinette need to grow up before they can be with each other because at this point their crushes are more bad than good.

Well yeah, that’s the other issue. We wouldn’t be here if the show allowed our main characters to grow without hitting the reset button every three episodes. So it doesn’t feel like an honest progression and more like forcing the characters to accomodate a set ending while hitting the biggest amount of bad love tropes in the process.

You could have introduced Luka and Kagami back in season one, where you could argue that their feelings were “less developed” to allow them to explore other possibilities.

Or if your want the stakes to be highter, you could have introduced them after their feelings grew and became deeper but couldn’t progress because of good reasons (like the fact that they can’t know their identities, Adrien’s multiple family issues, etc). More dramatic that what I’d like, but still doable.

Instead you get a yo-yo development that wants to have its cake and eat it too. Where the show wants you to feel for the square and be saaaad about them going for other people while at the same time sabotaging their development and making it look like a joke because of lazy writing. Why should I root for them to get together when it doesn’t seem to be good for either of them? The well is already poisoned.

When she tagged me I was reading Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin which I was very excited about because it had a canon genderfluid main character!! And it was a good book and I would recommend it. I don’t necessarily agree with some of the descriptions of transness, but I thought that was fine because trans experiences are varied and diverse. I was less excited that there was no mention of gender neutral pronouns at all. It was also hard to suspend my disbelief that the main character, Riley, could present so androgynously that Riley’s assigned gender was never “given away”, much less that Riley’s parents wouldn’t refer to Riley as their daughter/son. In general this seems like a book directed more towards a cis audience which makes sense if you read the author’s note and understand his reasons for writing the book.

I also just finished Because You’ll Never Meet Me by Leah Thomas, so I’m starting on the sequel, Nowhere Near You, which is another book with canon queers. It’s a contemporary sci-fi-ish epistolary bildungsroman and it’s quite good! The characters are particularly well developed and three-dimensional.

I don’t really think showing bad people have emotions is a bad thing. Humanizing doesn’t always mean excusing, imo buuuuuut...this revelation...yeah. it um. goes a bit in that direction.

Yeah I was never a fan of this theory because I don’t think a former fascist lying and leading the people she oppressed isn’t something I can uh. sympathize with. But at least Sapphire seems to be reacting appropriately negatively to this. The fallout could make for a good watch. And wow, it takes so much away from Pearl? Like she’s just been doing what she was made for, serving her Diamond?What?

I wish I could say I definitely trust SU to make this worth it- there was a time when my trust in the show was complete- but ever since the Bismuth thing I’m aware it’s fallible so. I’ll just be along for the ride I guess and hope for the best. Don’t have much energy to discourse over it but I sure bet the fandom will! gosh am i staying far away! for the rest of eternity! gonna be a dumpster fire!!!
