Violet Ghosts by Leah Thomas
Tumblr media
From William C. Morris and Edgar Award finalist Leah Thomas comes an ethereal, thought-provoking YA tale about a teen who can see ghosts . . . and helps them avenge their deaths.
Dani's best friend, Sarah, is a ghost. But maybe that's normal when you've spent your childhood running from an abusive parent.
Dani and Sarah might be more than friends, though Dani dares not say so. Dani is afraid that if he tells Sarah he's trans, she won't bother haunting him anymore. Sarah's got good reason to distrust boys, having been strangled by one.
After Sarah and Dani come across another ghost haunted by her own brutal murder, they set out to bring peace and safety to spirits like her. But when an old rival reenters Dani's life, their unexpected friendship gives Dani a strange new feeling of belonging. As Dani starts to find his place in the living world, he'll need to let go of his ghosts.
Equal parts chilling, raw, and emotionally resonant, acclaimed author Leah Thomas's ghost story for the #MeToo era is about reclaiming trauma and finding peace among true friends.

Oh god. Oh fuck. Shitfuckbuggerbloodyhell. Just finished reading Nowhere Near You by Leah Thomas (sequel to Because You’ll Never Meet Me). And, let me tell you, this duology feels like this. You enter a room with two people. One of them tells you a bad dad joke you can’t help laughing at. The other hits you with a wave of self hate, misery, and Sad GayTM vibes, and then the first guy punches you with an ocean of depression. Then both hit you with cuss words and encouraging sentences that make you cry, and then more dad jokes. Then they pat you on the back and give you ice cream and make you giggle, but then they hit you with even more feels and leave you gasping for breath from the weight. Then they send waves of happy emotions again, and everything feels alright, until they drop another bomb of depression and self hate. Finally, they punch you with a bit of sadness, hug you tight, and kick you back out the door.
Leah Thomas, you are amazing and deserve praise, this is one of the best things that I have read, I absolutely loved from beginning to end, and I wish I could forget it so I could read it again for the first time. From the bottom of my heart (inside my chest, no pacemaker), thank you.

The Intersectional Environmentalist: How to Dismantle Systems of Oppression to Protect People + Planet by Leah Thomas
Thomas has a comprehensive and compelling work in The Intersectional Environmentalist. This should be required reading for every human; the connections Thomas makes are truly eye-opening, even if you have considered connections between racism, privilege, and environmentalism before. If you haven't considered how these things are connected, this work will blow your mind. The statistics are well-placed and emphasize the points Thomas is making. In our ever-changing world (for the worse, in terms of environmental health), works like Thomas's must be read, considered, and taken to heart for solutions on how to improve things for both our planet and our fellow humans.
