#while fluff does exist in the phandom

inevitable conclusion to a show with a premise that is so viscerally horrifying. It's the kid's show version of "Not a Deer that gained access to a secure facility with a safety vest and and a clipboard"
Love that while online fandom in general is having a weird meltdown about the morality of enjoying anything darker than sanitized fluff in fiction, the Danny Phantom fandom is still sitting in the corner 16 years after the show ended with a blankie and cocoa and their 10,000th deep-fanon supertorture cannibalism vivisection psychological horror fic
#while fluff does exist in the phandom#the sheer dissonance of “kid's show vibes” vs “visceral horror”#leaves unfilled a huge swath of the phandom ecosystem#law of nature: whatever the source material is lacking in will be energetically supplied by the fandom#the horror is also just so pervasive in the show. so many things are just so chilling#I'd bet good money that DP is like Miraculous Ladybug - the creators pitched an adult show#then Corporate Network Bullshit forces them to repackage it as a kid's show#anyway#the world building is also really interesting and leaves a lot of points to branch off of#phandom#dp#a little bit too old for this but it has the spirit:#streaming wars#fandom culture

Phandom Phic Recs: Crossover
(...are we still doing phic rec friday? oh well)
Heroes Under Drinking Age: Alpha by kineticallyanywhere [Danny Phantom + Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja]
amity park gets a ghost infestation, and its residents move to norrisville. i don't know how to summarize it but it's really hecking good
(theres a side story to this fic with adjl and kim possible, although that one hasn't updated in a long while)
Why do i love it? there are a ton of fics out there about casper high getting destroyed and having to merge with another school, but this one does it so well? like...the characters are ic enough to be able to imagine it happening in canon, but with just enough headcanons mixed in to make it feel original; the pacing on it is right in the safe range between excruciatingly slow and extremely rushed; and there's so much hero bonding, man!! danny and randy just had a really cool dynamic and their heart-to-hearts were really wholesome...i love it
Doors by Elisabeth Hill [Danny Phantom + Coraline]
Coraline's mother gets a new job in Amity Park, causing the Joneses to move. Coraline isn't fazed when she learns that ghosts exist.
Why do i love it? im a hoe for rare danphan crossovers.....i love danny phantom, and i love coraline......of course im gonna love a fic with both in them. (plus tucker flirting with coraline was kind of somehow really cute??)
fire and ice and the occasional wayward spell by @d-o-t-s [Danny Phantom + Harry Potter + American Dragon: Jake Long]
hogwarts hires a dragon and a ghost to protect hogwarts in a time of war...instead they get two dumbass teens
Why do i love it? hey dots..........did you know.........that your writing is really fucking good? the characters.....are so filled with fluff..........it is such a wholesome fic.......... plus, i dont think "danny gets hired as a protector of hogwarts" is a fic that was done before and i love original ideas

I 100% agree, and I also think that supernatural element potentiates a compelling darkness of tone in the story that is almost never capitalised on. The premise is so morbid if you think about it for longer than a few seconds, and as a horror story Enjoyer I think that’s some shamefully wasted potential. If I’m honest, the superhero parts don’t really interest me all that much on their own -- it’s the way they come into conflict with supernatural/thriller tropes that appeals to me.
And you can definitely see it in the phandom, too. A helluva lot of us took “a half-ghost superhero and his friends fight a goofy new villain every week while also avoiding ghost hunters” and came out the other side with “an undead child and his friends contend with restless spirits to defend a town that fears and hates him.”
For all the riffing the original show did on various existing superhero media, I’m surprised they didn’t also reference more ghost stories, urban legends, horror movies, and so on. There’s a few, nods here and there, but not many. And for all the puns, they really missed out on a goldmine of “I slept like the dead” style jokes about Danny’s vital status -- it’s frustrating that they basically never acknowledge it at all, even in a lighthearted sort of way.
Thankfully fic authors have picked up the slack, so even in fluff/comedy phic the story brushes against the morbid elements that are sort of inherent in the premise to make those jokes, and they make so much sense to my exhausted young-adult brain that it just feels weird to look at the comedy of the source material.
Like, it’s more or less all the same component parts, but the tone does Everything to transform phanon into a story almost all its own, and I think that’s neat.
Like i really love Danny Phantom but i feel like one of the issues it had which is really a personal critique of mines is how often it feels like they completely ignore the supernatural aspect of the show in favor of the superhero aspect. Now I'm fully aware that Danny Phantom is at it's very core a superhero show that centers around the supernatural but imagine if you will if it was a supernatural show with superhero tropes/themes etc.
Because Danny isn't your average superhero, Danny is a GHOST FIGHTING superhero who also happens to be a ghost himself all his villains and storylines mainly revolve around him being a ghost. Ghost villains,Ghost hunting enemies etc Danny isn't going around stopping random burglaries or crime lords. Everything in the world of the show should more or less be affected by the fact that ghosts exist in the show.
And i feel like it's so much of a dope concept in theory that doesn't really get played around with alot.
A big episode that I feel suffers from this is Infinite Realms which despite being an episode that mainly takes place in the ghost zone feels so out of place since thematically it really doesn't feel like it revolves around the supernatural at all like obviously from a straight forward perspective it does to some degree cuz it's an episode of danny phantom but i feel like this plot could be used in damn almost any other action and it would play out the exact same way even without the ghostly elements. Like the episode is just one big World domination plot by vlad which is about as stereotypical as any superhero cartoon can get.
Meanwhile an episode like urban jungle or splitting images works because of how tightly it grips onto the supernatural aspect that draws you into the show instead of just following a typical superhero formula
Thinking Danny is using his ghost powers to pick on people Sidney who lost his own life to bully steals Danny's body to make him atone for his bullying.
Undergrowth is trying to purge the world of human influence so that his plants can grow and thrive.
These 2 are such interesting plots that rely heavily on Danny Phantom being not only a superhero show but a supernatural show.
Hell even when butch is doing his "sequel ideas" for the show you see him talk about more of the superhero aspect as apposed to the ghost aspect of it.
But then again this could all just be me and my random thoughts so yeah.
#danny phantom#meta#text post#this opinion ain't much but it is mine :)#i would kill for a teen/young adult horror-shounen reboot that includes both the Power of Friendship as well as Existential Dread#like legit
