And no, they were thinking of Delftware which is the name for the Dutch knock off of the traditional blue and white pottery started to get imported from Asia in the like sixteen hundreds and was so incredibly expensive because Europe didn't know what kaolin was yet so the Dutch figured out how to make white glaze from tin called majolica so they could compete (even thought they were sitting on grolleg, which is a very very very white kaolin but i digress)

Queen Sefonia

The localised version of her name takes away the theme of Solm names. Characters from Solm are named after Italian desserts, a nod to the Sicily inspiration. Sefonia‘s name in Japanese is Sfoglia. Sfoglia means ‘thin leaf’ in Italian, the name describes the texture of pastry which resembles stacked leaves. Sfoglia is often shell shaped and filled with fruit. A similar dessert is lobster’s tail pastry. 

In her head she adorns a white coppola with feathers. In Sicily different colours of the coppola signified social class. Royalty and nobles wore a white coppola. The decorations on her coppola are two black feathers and one red and orange feather. The Black feathers are a reference to Saint Anthony, the patron saint of lost things. When Alear arrives in Solm (Chapter 12: The Sentinels) they find themselves lost in the desert. Queen Sefonia had sent her children to scout for the Divine Dragon. Her son Fogado is the one to find them and guide them back to the palace. The lost Dragon becomes found. In Sicily it is also a tradition to keep black feathers under your pillow to protect from death. To receive a black feather from Sicily is a bad omen. The orange and red colour could be inspired by the colours of Sicily which include, red, yellow, orange peach, brown and blue.  

The patterning upon her shrawl or a sciallina and her sarong is a nod to majolica design. The shawl is worn for modesty as well as protecting from the elements. The sarong has an Arabian influence with the decoration and tassels akin to a balancer.

Jar made in MONTELUPO, Italy, 1540-1550 - Majolica, beige ceramic body, glossy cream-white glaze which extends inside the container and leaves the base uncovered. Painted in polychrome with cobalt blue and yellow.

Designers Benedict and Daniel created a charming interior based around their shared taste in collecting, their cheerful acceptance of the house’s imperfections, and a sense of humor.

At the back of the living room, a simple George III cabinet painted turquoise serves as a drinks cabinet. The french doors lead into the garden.

In the dining room, the built-in dresser holds a collection of majolica pottery.

‘Squiggle‘ fabric in green and white complements ‘Seaweed’ fabric on the tablecloth.

Benedict and Daniel kept the colors in the kitchen. As the paint has peels off in places, they simply glue it back on. A collection of ceramics hangs on the walls.

Some of Benedict’s frame designs decorate the space above the dresser.

Daniel’s bedroom is painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Dix Blue.’ Many of the pictures in this room, some bought by Daniel and others bought for him, relate to Venice.

The landing, which is piled high with books, opens into Benedict’s bedroom.

Benedict’s room is a riot of colour and pattern, with a patchwork quilt and curtains, a deep wallpaper border, an oversized 20th-century painting and an embroidered side chair.

The upstairs landing is packed with pictures. The table is a 19th-century Burmese carved table, relacquered by Benedict.  

Outside Benedict’s bedroom, a desk is surrounded with piles of books. The lamp is made out of a Han Chinese vase.
