Eurovision 2018: Pre-Show (#43)

Okay, now that the official channel has finally posted the Armenia vid, it’s time to rank these 43 fools. This year’s selection looks promising to me (better than last year’s at this stage), but I’m fairly conflicted never the less. The amount of songs which I don’t care about is significantly higher; However, the songs that I *do* care about, I fricking ADORE, much more than last year’s. Even then, this year doesn’t have any outright bad entries...

43. CZECH REPUBLIC

...no outright bad entries except for this bitch, yw! Basics be saying hither and yon how ~Furesh ‘n’ Funkytown Diz Bob Iz~, but I’m here to S H A K E your world and tell you that this is one of my least favourite ESC songs in this entire decade. Yes, even at this early a stage I can commit to such a statement. Bite me! >:-)

It’s challenging to start explaining what it is that bothers me so much about “Lie to me”. In a nutshell, pretty much everything about it? 

The Message

As you might remember from last year, I really disliked “I Can’t Go On” because it objectified women and was one of those fake-classy songs (: “I’m gonna take off all my clothes because i’m SO smitten by ur beauty I want to fuck you right here and now” such a class act). 

“Lie To Me” brings it up nine notches and a half by graphically talking about sex:  how girls make him “wet”, how he wants to “bop her on his wood bamboo” and “ride on his camel with her” (because camels have humps, got it? -__-) I’m not a prude at all but what the actual fuck? Who even flirts that way? and that’s the ESC-friendly SANITIZED version O__O (btw: if you feel like your song is too vulgar for Eurovision and feel like you need to censor yourself... then why not do it in the first place? :tard:)

To bring out my inner Margaret Atwood: the song is about fucking. Not making love. Not two people coming together and sharing a moment of intimacy. Nope, FUCKING. Coitus. Romantic, innit?

The portrayal

This message of impending Fuckboi-ery is heralded forth by Former Model (model? HE MUST MODEL FOR THE BLIND -- Charley Uchea, --me) Mikolas Josef, who for dons hamfisted facial expressions and Steve Urkel’s wardrobe for the occasion. Like, what on earth:

"lol I’m so innocent and nerdy and bullies used to shove my head down toilets but now i get all the girl regardless HA HA!!” ugh shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down, you fucking SUCK. I can’t be the only one finding it *INCREDIBLY* creepy that he styles himself like this, right? It oozes FUCKBOI from every pore. 

Other things which annoy me: the annoying trumpets (i really hate trumpets and especially when they’re used in an obnoxious way without any reason. Fusedmarc you are NOT), the rapping (again: white men who aren’t Emminem: STOP. RAPPING.), the scatting and the sheer lack of criticism from the fan community. I suppose being the epitome of a White Privileged Springbreaker is sufficient to be granted a musical hall pass :-/

Qualification Odds: Good. 

Ickolas appears to be a lock for the finale, meaning we’ll be terrorized twice by his MONKEY FACES and BAD SKIN. I mean, the morals behind it are questionable in these #MeToo times, but hey, he’s a Straight White Guy With A Modern Sounding Song, best not to ask any critical questions, amirite? :) 

Even then, I need to address that the first semifinal is absolutely STACKED (especially the first half): Belgium, Estonia and Israel are sure-fire qualifiers and may nab some point off the Czech Republic. Mikolas should do well with the jurors though, where his only competition (at this pre-rehearsal stage) are Sennek from Belgium and Equinox from Bulgaria. 

Televoting seems less clear though. It will largely depend on whether Mikolas will be able to transpose his energetic song into an equally energetic staging (which he did not do during his Vidbir performance, which made him look like a complete and utter tool) and on whether he’ll sound good. Despite all of its flaws, “Lie To Me” is not an easy song to sing, with all it’s scatting and WhiteRapping.

It’s almost certainly still enough to qualify... in like 6th or 7th position. 

Jury or Televote entry: JURY. Czech Rep has always been a jury country since their return and it won’t be any different. “Lie To Me” is outclassed by most of its peer entries to sweep the televote, not to mention that Sweden provided a decent alternative option in “Dance You Off”.

Projected placement: 6th-17th in the Final (a Frans at best and a Freddie at worst)

Three Loco EP (by maddecent)

Three Loco, like three mascots of Diplo's Mad Decent banner, are caricatures of rap and white people. They take nothing seriously and fire off rhymes with uninhibited ease. The rhymes are clever and catchy; i love listening to both Riff-Raff and Milonakis. They make you smile and chuckle, if not full on laugh. Both of them have that ability to make you laugh just by looking at them, knowing that anything that comes out of their mouth will be off-the-wall and unexpected. They are easy to like.

At the same time they are easy not to like, so full of refusal to take anything seriously, except maybe making crazy rhymes. Taking nothing seriously is fine and good but it means they aren't really saying much, other than white people are silly (which everyone already knows anyway) and that rap is a great medium (which everyone already knows anyway).

That's just it - they are too easy. Not that easy is necessarily bad; it just means it's disposable, unlikely to be put on repeat. Unlikely to live past a season.
