WEEK 3.1

PART A: THEMATIC MINDMAPPING

Mindmapping terminologies, questions, and ways to collect.

During the first half of our class, we did thematic mindmapping. This was to enable us to expand on our project and map out what we want to know or know, any key terms of what we are doing, and how we can collect content for that work.

For my project, I want to do a brand design for a Sri Lankan alcohol drink "Arrack". I want to incorporate illustrations of Sri Lankan iconography and have the bottle/can designs filled with Sri Lankan culture.

For this mindmapping I chose the question: How can brand design promote Sri Lankan culture? With the help of my tutor I was able to add moe statements/words on my map and slowly find my way around this project and where I should be heading for.

My Sub Q's:

How type can bring out a culture.

How does the drink taste like?

How will it bring a culture in light to others?

How are the different ways to bring out a culture on a brand?

How will it be promoted in NZ?

Using cultural iconographys can bring out a culture on a brand.

Terminologies + Contextual Areas:

Culture.

Traditional icons.

Sri Lankan traditional masks: Raksha Masks.

Colours that represent the country.

History/meaning of icons.

Traditional drinks - Ceylon arrack.

How can I collect + generate content and all the ways I can go about?

Research history + traditions collect content.

Illustrate Sri Lankan iconographys.

Find the drink in NZ (how does it look, taste, packagaing etc).

Sri Lankan markets (colours, any patterns style etc).

Symbols of Sri Lanka patterns (Temple designs, clothing patterns etc).

Interview people born from the country - their childhood.

Look into Sri Lankan brand designs.

Look into the country - the area the drink is from, the local.

We were then put into groups of three and received any feedback or ideas to help us in our project. The two feedbacks I got was:

"Your brand could cover a variety of Sri Lankan drinks. How can you use symbols to your advantage? (Masks, etc..)."

"Traditional icons - packaging. Different flavours - a series."

Though the feedback are short and simple, this does help me to think wht to do next and look into using tradional icons to pronote culture and using different icons for different drinks = a series.

PART 2A: TERMINOLOGY INVESTIGATION

Raksha Masks: A Sri Lankan mask used in festivals and cultural dances. Raksha means "demon" and the masks are apotropaic which means it is intended to ward off evil. They are painted in vibrant colours and protruding tongues depicting various types of demons.

In my project, I see this as a unique cultural icon in Sri Lankan culture that can be a great way to be used in a brand packaging and can be a unique feature that could hopefully be recognised among people.

Arrack:

Arrack is a distilled alcoholic drink made from only two ingredients: water and the distilled sap of unopened coconut flowers from the Sri Lankan coconut palm. Typically produced in Indian, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Traditionally consumed itself or in cocktail.

In my project, I see this as a great way to show a popluar Sri Lankan drink that can be enjoyed in various ways. It is something as far as I know you can't get in NZ, so would be great way to promote the drink in this branding project and have people discover new drink.

Traditional Icons:

Water Lily Flower - Sri Lankan traditional flower. Considered a symbol of truth, purity and discipline. It has connections to Buddha and used as a ceremonial flower throughout history.

Sri Lankan Elephant - Elephants were a common element in Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils heraldy for over two thousand years and remained so through British colonial rule.

Lion - The symbol of a lion in Sri Lankan heraldry dates back to 486 BC, when Vijaya, the first King of Sri Lanka, arrived on the island from India and brought with him a standard depicting a lion. The symbol appears to have influenced subsequent monarchs, being used extensively by them and becoming a symbol of freedom and hope.

In my project, I want to use these icons in my illustrations here and there bringing out other aspects of the culture.
