I’m aware that, especially on tumblr, a lot of these fans are on the younger side. However, I feel the need to remind y’all that since Hobie’s age is up for interpretation, that means that people are gonna HC him as adults. WHICH IS FINE, BTW. A lot of us HC Hobie and other characters as adults from experience, seeing as we’ve met many people on the older side who act more like Pav and Hobie than Gwen and Miles. Please don’t harass anyone who sees Hobie as an adult regardless of what has been confirmed or not.

On The Subject of Ship Names:

I am not interested in having a morality debate btw, as far as I'm aware Hobbie is a teenager in the movie and I'm also not ride or die for any shipping in the Spiderverse, which is a first for me.

Because I am ride or die for the concept of shipping itself, hence why I'm making this post.

I've seen suggestions of a wonderful variation on punkflower, a fun spin on a classic if you will.

Hobbie Brown and Prowler! Miles.

Now I love this, but I think it needs a distinct name from punkflower, if there isn't one already.

Personally I think it should be Punk42 for Prowler Miles's dimension and because it sounds like a band reference.

But feel free to share your thoughts and ideas!

What gets my goat about the misinformation around Hobie's age bc of the video talking about *scrapped* ideas for the characters is that...if that were the case, why would they even imply any jealousy from Miles about Gwen and Hobie? A million people have probably said this already, and I know it obviously didn't end up being the "love triangle" we were somewhat lead to believe it'd be, there's definitely still that implication there that Miles is a little jealous and questions what their relationship is.

If Hobie was that much older than Gwen and Miles, why would they put that in the movie? If Hobie's supposed age makes PunkFlower inappropriate, can't the same be said for what is literally in the movie itself? Especially if he was as old as some people seem to think he is - seriously I've seen some people say they think he's as old as 20s-30s, and if that were the case, wouldn't those implications be just as weird as if they'd implied something between Peter or Miguel and a spider-teen!? That would be so weird and y'know, they *wouldn't* add that. Because it'd be gross to even imply.

Hobie's been pretty consistently portrayed as a teen and it'd be weird for him to be made a grown man so much older than Miles in the movie, even if his age is up for interpretation I can't take any idea that he's so significantly older than Gwen, Pavitr, and Miles seriously. I'd definitely believe him being the oldest of the group, but not all that much older.

I just find it ~interesting~ that this started the moment people started shipping two black boys (which btw, Hobie/Miles has existed longer than ATSV), idk just something I noticed. Rant over, bye besties.

I don't understand why they got shipped anyway, like I get he wanted to help him escape from the society, but its not like it was love at first sight, like they didn't make out the first thing when they saw each other.

Plus I can't read punkflower or any other ship in atsv (Gayatri and Pav are extremely cute btw, Miles x Margo ykwim). Cus, I am a girl (that should've made sense).

I have noticed that anti rhetoric seems to go against most of the old types of ships people would flock to in like 2008, Sasunaru is a ship of all time but Bakudeku is abusive. Even if there isn't anything wrong with a queer ship (can't be called pedo or incest) messy and angsty ships are treated as worse than super fluffy ones, and tbh this has kind of made me feel alienated from fandom.

I know that I repeat myself but it's true. You're right. The purity culture that antis employ is rooted in homophobia, which is why even the fluffiest gay ships get targeted 100% more than the "dark" het ships. If you ship Jaytim you're a freak of nature and you should repent, but if you ship Brubabs you're fine - mostly fine at least.

Because here's the thing. They started coming after the dark ships and the really heavy kinks, then they switched to just non-vanilla ships and mild kinks, then they expanded to any ship that has a vaguely "unhealthy" connotation (sometimes this unhealthy connotation is made up), and kink doesn't even need to be involved. They are starting to attack het shippers too - it doesn't happen as often but I do see people being harassed for shipping Sasunaru and Sasusaku, or Brubabs, or anything the casual anti dislikes really. The dynamic of laying out why a ship is pRoBLeMatiC, arguing how shipping is bad and makes you a bad person, seeped into fandom spaces of all kinds and is employed even by people who aren't antis themselves, because it got just so widespread. It's essentially the norm for a lot of people; they see a new ship and their first reaction is to dissect it to find reason to harass who ships it (see one of my mutuals who got bullied to hell and back for drawing punkflower because of course if you ship Miles and Hobie you're a pedophile, even if Hobie's official age has not been disclosed, and Miles is most certainly not a child).

The so called discourse will keep spreading. I know this sounds alarmist but there is no limit to anti mentality, it's kinda like how republicans take it out on trans people, then spread it to queer people in general, then go after the rights of women and children and if they could they'd abolish divorce. I'm pretty sure they will actually try depending on how the elections go next year. Antis are on the same path. Now we progressed to a point where het ships aren't safe anymore either, and some antis make the case that sex and nsfw content should not exist at all in any kind of media, fictional and transformative alike, not just the "toxic" representations of it.

I too feel alienated from fandom too because of that. It's an old adage, but fandom is supposed to be a safe space and it's just not that anymore (come to Aethy for a better experience btw, they really do have a policy to kick antis out if they bother people). Sure block the people you don't want to see, customize your own space, tailor it for yourself and all of that. But when you are a creator it's consistently harder, harassment is always around the corner especially when you're an artist. Especially because a website like tumblr directly caters to antis and censorship worshippers and does not by any means defend who's getting harassed.
