Why I Still Create – Even After 20 Years

I never really stopped to ask myself why I still create.

But looking back, the answer has always been there — in my childhood. When I had those big LEGO blocks and dreamed of the smaller ones, the detailed ones, because they gave me more freedom. More possibilities. I knew I wouldn’t swallow them — I just wanted to build worlds. And I was barely a year old.

Later came modeling clay. Somehow, I brought some home from my cousin’s place — maybe I even stole it. I’d watch cartoons, and then recreate the characters from memory. Tiny, detailed, alive. Creating wasn’t something I chose — it was something I just did.

Then school happened. Bullying. Family struggles. Everything started to fall apart, and creativity faded into the background. I turned to extreme sports — skateboarding — to escape it all. But even there, art found me again. I got pencils. I started create again. Not because I had to. Because I couldn’t not.

And today... after almost 20 years... I still create. Why?

Because I still see possibilities. Growth. Depth. Every day offers a new shape, a new color, a new idea. A new way to speak without words.

So much has changed through the years. But one thing has never left me — that inner need to create.

And the longer I live, the deeper, truer, and more meaningful that creation becomes.

I'll start:

I write because it's fun. Plain and simple. I started writing when I was 11 years old, and wouldn't ya know, the first thing I ever wrote was fanfiction. I used to write it during my free time in class, and my English/reading teacher used to call it my "epic" because I was always writing.

Eventually I branched into my own ideas, but then I suffered from a bout of depression when I got to high school that took me many years to fully overcome. In that time I stopped writing and made excuses that I had AP homework to do or band practice or I was too tired but in all actuality I had lost my inspiration.

It wasn't until the end of my sophomore year of college that I discovered Miraculous, and the only reason I discovered it was because of fanworks on tumblr. All of a sudden I started coming up with ideas and finding inspiration to write again. I didn't care if my ideas would never be canon. It was fun. And now as a seasoned Miraculer, I still find enjoyment out of writing fanfiction, and I have also started finding inspiration for my own ideas again. I've made friends (and enemies) from fandom, and I have people all the time who tell me that my writing made them smile even for a little while, and ya know what, that's good enough for me.

#WhyICreate. To be completely transparent and honest, I create for me! I was born a creator, and I'm not just referring to blogging/influencer creating, this is for all forms that I've ever affiliated myself with. Since I was 5, I have been in some form of an art class or practiced art any many mediums. From K5 to 12th grade, I've taken arts, graphics, or music classes. By 8 I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. I studied fashion design in college and went on to internship and work for SPANX as a contract designer. So, for me, it's second nature. No matter what medium it is, I feel I need to be creating. -- Why did I start blogging? When my contract was up, I struggled with finding another apparel design job in Atlanta. There are limited positions and I was not in a great financial position or really wanted to move to NY. So, I had to completely change industries. I kind of hit a dark point where I felt like I just gave up everything I worked so hard for and loved doing. So I started blogging and creating makeup tutorials. I needed a creative outlet and I just had fun creating content to share. It was therapeutic, it helped me get over a lot of my fears and helped me conquer some of my anxiety. It spoke to my creative soul. -- I know influencers have been getting a bad rep lately and how we're not authentic and more. That's why today, on @WorldCreatorDay, we wanted to share why we create. We are visual storytellers, makeup artists, comedians, musicians, fashionistas, filmmakers, chefs, or fitness motivators. We are full of life and full adventures. For the month of March, @dutchlabelshop is asking people what they make and why. Owls are my favorite thing that I make, not just because they’re cute (even though they are). Owls were the first kritter I made because I love the wisdom and freedom they represent. Some of my Kritters only require two fabrics/prints - owls use three. I like the challenge of finding three fabrics that complement each other in color, texture, print...all of it. I like using scraps of fabric that we’re going to be thrown away and finding a use for them. And I do it because I’ve had other jobs that didn’t allow me to use my creativity and I was miserable. Now, no matter what mood I’m in, I get into my studio and it all goes away. You guys, this is why I create - to share a little bit of happiness with others! This is my grandma (I call her Mama - my family is from the South) with a few prints I had made for her for Christmas. The first one is very special because it’s a recreation of her recipe for Macaroni Pie that she’s handed down to us. It’s such a staple in our family now that I had to pay homage to it and her! Doesn’t she look so cute?!
