Not cool Orym. That’s not how you deal with someone who had basically a panic attack. Yes it was terrible, yes it was scary, but you’ve just made it that much scarier for making a big ol’ judgement call on it, and adding shame to it.

Honestly I think it’s displacement from Orym who is terrified of losing his own grip on things. He came so close with Yu, and now, seeing Letters and Laudna both having moments of huge disregulation, it’s become absolutely clear that it could happen to literally any of them. They are all people carrying trauma, and that window of tolerance is small.

As a person with PTSD and a super fun associated panic disorder, the best way to deal with a flashback induced panic attack (which is what happened) is to allow the emotions to rise as safely as possible and help a person ground, by helping them realize all the moments and emotions that are happening to them in that moment will pass, that they are experiencing them but that they aren’t reality, and that in a little while, it’ll fade and they’ll be ok, and they haven’t done anything wrong. They are dealing with things that are pushing them outside of their tolerance, and that takes a lot of effort and resilience. If you can provide a distraction, a grounding, a way to pull them back into the here and now, that will help them control it.

And honestly, it’s not about avoiding it. It’s counter-intuitive, but avoiding adds to shame and fear, which feeds into anxiety and that feedback loop creates almost an inevitable trigger. But experiencing it, allowing those moments to integrate (without shame or jusgement) and then pass, that’s the thing that heals.

Also interesting and something for a future meta, but when flashbacks occur, often, it’s because both your body (where the unincorporated trauma lives) and your mind (where that gap exists) are ready to heal and integrate. It happens when you feel safe and when you’re ready - at least, that’s what my therapist says.

I have so many thoughts on the trauma and humour of this campaign, of the way these characters are trying to heal and become whole and learn to trust themselves, and just damn, Orym, your own trauma is fucking showing, bro.

An edit to add: obviously the hells reactions were based on their own experiences and valid, if not necessarily ideal for the circumstances. Everyone’s feelings are valid, how we chose to react to those feelings is a choice that we make and are responsible for - no one is ever going to react perfectly in a stressful situation and clearly everyone was just doing their best. (And obviously this is a game where people are going to make juicy choices because tension and story are fun! This was great!).
