[Dogrose] French Folk Traditions.
Common names : Dog Rose, Hedge Rose, Rosehip.
Vernacular names : dog rose, wild rose, rosehip (name given to the fruit of the dog rose), in France we call it "gratte-cul" literally "itching-ass", it evokes hairs in the red fruits which can cause itching. Also call cynor(r)hodon, kunorhodon (greek) : Dog Rose, Rose du Chien.
The name “dog rose” comes from the property once attributed to the root of this plant, which was supposed to cure the bites of rabid dogs.*(I will talk about this property further when I will translate extracts from Fournier for the botanical properties of the plant.)
Tumblr media
The rosehip is a shrub which, in France, has always had great magical properties.
Suspended from the door or from the ceiling of houses, its branches protect against diseases and spells (North); they prevent cow's milk from drying up, especially after a curse has been cast on it (Limousin).
To cast or "lift" a spell, one uses a rosehip root that one will have picked up in a cemetery on a full moon night. (Languedoc)
Tumblr media
The magical and formerly sacred character of this shrub appears in certain prohibitions (taboos), mixed with fear and respect, noted in the 19th century :
you must be careful not to insult it, otherwise the culprit will be affected by an illness that will only go away when he apologizes. (West)
the young girl who picks a rosehip flower will see her marriage delayed for a year.
if this same young girl (mean virgin) touches the fruit of the dog rose, she will fall from the "high-disease" (old name given to epilepsy.) (Drôme.)
laying rosehip flowers on a grave brings bad luck to the family for entire generations.
-
According to a Breton legend, it's the devil who designed the rosehip while trying to make a rosebush.
-
Magical Medicine:
you must cut a branch of wild rose the same size as the patient and put it to dry in the fireplace. When the branch is completely withered, the patient is cured.
various skin problems can be treated in the same way.
certain healers in the Gard treat their patients by pulling up a rosehip at sunrise, a gesture accompanied by magic words. Healers must then walk away backwards.
Sometimes an excrescence that looks like a sponge grows on the dog rose (it is called "rose scab"). It has long been used to dissolve kidney stones and has long been attributed with all sorts of marvelous properties. It protects against toothaches, it brings good luck (if you find it without having looked for it, or if you can't remember where you put it in your clothes)(Loiret), as a poultice on the kidneys it soothes the pain of menstruation and calms the influx of blood.

Starfall Sleuth: the Fournier Detective Agency
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: Any and all information is subject to change as the project develops.
The Fournier Detective Agency is owned by an Honorable Adrien Fournier, the second son of a minor gentry house and the greatest detective of his generation in the city of Starfall and the nation of Astraeria at large.
Despite the mythological reputation he holds as an ego-centric genius, he will gladly admit that he does not complete his cases by himself and requires aid in the form of his various staff, including the young Seele Gardner, the protagonist of the story.
Thus, let's discuss a brief roster of the characters associated with the Fournier Detective Agency:
Adrien Fournier, as previously discussed, is a second son in a noble family, leaving him free to pursue any and all interests without much worry for income and money. As a child, he was always deeply curious and learned to redirect his penchant for mischief into solving riddles and eventually, crimes. While he may play the part of the self-centered genius, he does care deeply for his colleagues, considering them among his closest friends and such an ego is hiding a deeper grief and inability to cope with an incident several years in the past.
Clementine Stark is his personal assistant. A secretary, driver, and even a bodyguard at times, this demure and stoic lady works for Fournier mainly as a form of gratitude. Her father was framed for a murder and the first major case Fournier solved acquitted him. Deeply loyal and hyper-competent, Miss Stark often finds herself fighting with Victoria Kestrel.
Victoria Kestrel is the resident mechanic of the detective agency. She frequently devises new gadgets to assist in the gathering of evidence and solving cases, as well as maintaining the car and the weaponry within the detective agency. She is somewhat of a free spirit, tomboyish in her working persona but a wild partying sort when the night falls. She is often competitive with Miss Stark in all manners of marksmanship and usually bickers about trying to get Miss Stark to adopt more technology in carrying out her duties. She often fails in this regard.
Gaspard LaSalle is a childhood friend of Fournier's, as his home village was the same as the location of the Fournier summer/country estate. An experienced attorney, LaSalle has long learned to suffer Fournier's more obnoxious traits and is the one who makes sure that Fournier is actually caring for himself properly. They often have chess nights in their townhouses and collaborate frequently. If there is a case where LaSalle cannot find enough evidence to help his client, he will always come to Fournier and his agency.
Seele Gardner is just seventeen and the newfound apprentice to Fournier. Her attention to detail and cognitive abilities caught Fournier's eye when he visited the village of Galewell on a vacation and was dragged into a theft case by the local authorities. What her greatest contribution is, however, is her ability to see through glamours and magical effects, making her vital to cases that involve sorcery and magicians. Cases that Fournier himself has sworn off of.
In Fournier's office, the only portrait he keeps clean is the little photograph of a smirking girl with dark hair and violet eyes. She was once known as Solene Watson, Fournier's partner-in-crime and a young sorceress who was drafted for the king's war with the neighboring Celecerres. Watson was Fournier's fiancee at the time, and he never truly got over her death.

REVIEW
Death at Fournier Downs by Cara Devlin
Bow Street Duchess #2
Excellent addition to the series – couldn’t put it down and can’t wait to see what happens next!
 What I liked:
* Audrey: Duchess of Fournier, married to her childhood friend and keeps his secret as he keeps hers, extrasensory perception of psychometry, has spent time in an asylum due to her paranormal ability, admirable, strong, intelligent, intriguing
* Hugh: principal Bow Street officer, nanny’s son, Viscount’s by-blow, scandal in his past, well-educated and eloquent, intuitive, attracted to Audrey, honorable, compassionate, a good man
* Sir: a young man from the streets befriended and employed by Hugh, savvy, a bit of light in the stories
* Basil: Hugh’s valet, a voice of reason, grounded, impeccable clothes handler
* The respect, friendship, and commitment Audrey and Philip have within their marriage – it has saved them both from a difficult alternative future
* Phillip: Duke of Fournier, brother, husband, arrested for murder and released when murderer was caught, curious about how his future will unfold
* The triangle that is developing between Audrey, Hugh, and Phillip and wondering how it will be resolved
* The plot, pacing, writing, and the way the story concluded with all mysteries and murders solveds
* That it seems true to the time and believable.
 What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to
* How biased, bigoted and small-minded so many of this era were and how cruel they could be to others – even their family.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 5 Stars
BLURB
After a murder scandal nearly sent her husband to the gallows, Audrey, the Duchess of Fournier, has retreated to the countryside to distance herself from gossip—and from the Bow Street officer who proved as irritating as he was intriguing. But when Audrey’s friend Charlotte, the Countess of Bainbury, dies mysteriously on Fournier Downs parkland, she summons the only person she trusts to uncover the truth: Principal Officer Hugh Marsden. Trying to ignore the mounting friction between them, as well as Hugh’s command for her to stay out of his investigation, Audrey uses her uncanny ability to read the memories of objects to discover a web of sordid local secrets. More than one unlucky lady has been caught within its deadly strands, and a single misstep in their hunt for a killer could make Audrey and Hugh the next targets. Murder at Fournier Downs is the second Bow Street Duchess mystery, perfect for fans of Anna Lee Huber, Darcie Wilde, Deanna Raybourn, and Kerrigan Byrne. Read the first book, Murder at the Seven Dials, available on Kindle Unlimited and in paperback.

the sea blazed gold | hbo limited series, 2020
based on virginia wolf’s the waves; tw: suicide
set on the coast of england against the vivid background of the sea, the sea blazed gold introduces six characters—three men and three women—who are grappling with the death of a beloved friend, perry. instead of describing their outward expressions of grief, the characters are drawn from the inside, revealing them through their thoughts and interior soliloquies. as their understanding of nature’s trials grows, the chorus of narrative voices blends together in miraculous harmony, remarking not only on the inevitable death of individuals but on the eternal connection of everyone. the result is a glorious collection of soliloquies that exist not to remark on the passing of events but to celebrate the connection between the various individual parts which form the mass of shared memories and experiences that create a collective consciousness.
focused around a group of six lifelong friends—from morning until night, from childhood into old age—the sea blazed gold is a seven-episode limited series filming throughout the summer of 2019 and premiering on hbo in mid-2020. the series is a collaboration between (bougie artsy ass director think jean-marc valee) and (famous writer) to finally bring (i cannot rename virginia woolf)’s experimental, stream-of-consciousness to screen, and has collected many of the fresh and promising faces of young hollywood together to create something that, before even filming, has created significant buzz, award-related and otherwise.
*the characters’ ages range from teenagers to mid-20s, so while that means the ages can be anything from 18-25 (and perry can be played by someone younger!) make it realistic pls!! styling and makeup and editing can only make someone look but so old/young
benedict, played by river fournier (idk some dummy).
outgoing and gregarious, benedict is a literary genius—or, almost. he spends his time collecting phrases that he hears from those around him, building and building for his eventual mega-novel. in the meantime, he is the mouthpiece of the group, telling stories and keeping everyone occupied. though technically each character narrates their own piece of the story, their own little piece of the puzzle, benedict is the key to it all, using his knack for language and communication to put everything into perspective at the close of the series.
jolie, reserved for keren.
for jolie, her body is an asset. it is the thing from which she derives all of her power in the world, which will ensure that she is popular and loved and revered. in her sensuality she is entirely free, rootless and wild as she makes physical connections with anyone she pleases. like siobhan, jolie forgoes university and instead becomes a well-known london socialite. though she seems fearless, jolie contemplates her mortality and the idea that she may not have the same physical power one day when her beauty fades—but, indicative of her enduring spirit, she is not willing to give up.
laurence, played by wells vacarro (morgan).
although he is smart and capable, laurence’s self-awareness tied to his own inferiority is crippling throughout his entire life. he is constantly measuring himself up against his upper class friends, worrying that he’ll be judged for being poor and having an accent—so much so, in fact, that he ends up basing his entire life around it. he is angry about his position in life, defensive even when unprovoked, and unable to see that the people around him are in awe of his level of intelligence. instead of going off to college like the rest of his friends, he begins working at a shipping company in what seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy and engages in a romantic affair with fellow outsider rose. despite his inferiority complex, he has a fascination with the grittier and uglier parts of life, finishing his individual episode by reflecting on the things he’s always shunned.
noel, played by first last.
noel is the sensitive, sheltered, yet idealistic member of the group. he, along with benedict and laurence, goes off to boarding school where he meets and falls in love with perry. it’s an all-consuming, aspirational love that he never acts on. although he dreams of being a poet, he moves to london to attend university and instead pursues a degree in the classics, always holding onto unattainable feelings for perry. when perry dies, he is forced to come to terms with his loss and, subsequently, move on.
rose, reserved for lana.
rose has lived her entire life in her head, viewing everything through vivid and intricately-constructed metaphors that she’s thought up. though incredibly shy in reality, she spends most of her time thinking up imaginary scenarios in which she portrays the powerful hero. she feels alienated from everyone else, doomed to linger on the periphery of everything, and although it seems like she’s found a companion in laurence, the second-to-last episode concludes with her suicide.
siobhan, played by sloane osbourne (maddie).
siobhan is the real thoreau of the group, relishing in the moments that they all spend together in nature. unlike some of her friends, susan is traditional in her morals. she wants to live far from the hustle and bustle of city life, to raise a family and build a life. (unlike in the book yes i know) susan forfeits the academic lifestyle pursued by her friends in order to do exactly that, getting married young and raising her children. she is particular and stubborn, grumpy at times, but passionate and motherly as well.
perry, played by first last.
though perry hasn’t been integrated in the group for much of the story, he is the undeniable golden boy. smart, athletic, talented, and personable, it seems as if everyone fawns over him. percival is an aspirational figure for each character, a friend and an idol and a love interest, so when he dies tragically it sends the whole group into a tailspin of devastation and wondering ‘what if’.

my last breath will whisper your name.
the priest’s collar is unmistakable, even in the dying light of the sun — evening is settling over the parish, and sarah’s fingers are working the fine, delicate fabric of a lace-edged handkerchief to nothing. she knows father fournier, and the man with him, and her heart is catching in her throat — edgar sits at her feet, playing with a small tin wagon, rolling it along the floorboards of the wrap around porch. she can barely hear the sound of the toy on the wood, over the beating of her heart.
they are coming closer, and closer, and sarah feels like a wild animal, sensing approaching, pending doom — and though she wants to run as fast as her legs will carry her, she knows she cannot escape this, there is no hope of outrunning this. she paces on the porch in caged strides, the sounds of her boot heels a hollow knock. a small girl watches her from behind a screen door, quiet.
‘ mrs. bohannon.. ‘ the man’s voice cuts through the fog of her thoughts, and she stops pacing to look at him, apprehension clear on her face, brows rising towards her hairline. it’s almost as if she was worried for nothing, she thinks, they’re not here to impart bad news.
‘ sarah, ‘ the father’s voice is soft, and he takes the first few steps up the porch to her, and reaches for her hand. ‘ i am so sorry, sarah. ‘
realization hits her like a freight train — it’s the dark thought that clouds her mind, and it comes clawing to the forefront without mercy. before she can stop herself, a strange, haunted howl leaves her throat, and she collapses on the porch in a mess of crinoline and silk. father fournier is still holding onto her hand, and he crouches down next to her.
‘ he died with honour, sarah.. ‘
in her mind, she was screaming — screw honour! i want my husband back! — but the words didn’t leave her mouth. there was no room for them, between the choking sobs that wracked her chest, gasping for air, like a fish out of water. sarah’s mother came in a flurry of black, scooping edgar off the porch, and ushering the children inside.
sullivan bohannon is not the first to die from this town, and he won’t be the last — but sarah never thought for an instant that seeing him off that day would be the last — she would have asked for a thousand more kisses, a thousand more moments of his voice in her ear, how he breathed her name and still more kisses.
she was a woman in pain, her heart shattering into tiny pieces, pricking her lungs. she was unable to breathe, tears streaming down her cheeks. her mother speaks with the father and the other man, and takes a bloodstained letter the father offers her — sullivan’s last. she will give it to sarah when the time is right — which isn’t now. sarah is sobbing, crying, burying her face in her skirts, a wounded woman. the love of her life has died hundreds of miles away, and god, was he asking for her, in his final moments? it’s too much.
it’s too much, and it’s not enough.
damn god. damn god, and damn men, and damn this whole bloody, stupid war. making widows out of wives, and orphans out of sons, daughters. sullivan’s body would be returned to his family and buried in the plot behind the house, under the oak tree. his wife, sarah, would be dressed in widow’s weeds from that day until her death five years later, when she was buried next to her husband.

I rarely get asked out and I ALWAYS make the first move. Every time I approach someone in person I get rejected or stood up. I tried online dating and people only wanted to sleep with me. Fournier gangrene. One day I was actually precepting a patient care tech when I was a nurse in the ER and had a patient ask me to help him dress his wound (this was not why he was in the hospital). Thinking this would be a great teaching moment, I called my tech in to learn how to do some wound care. That's definitely reassuring to hear. For so long I've just figured my issues were some weird combination of my circulation issues plus depression because when I was a young teen a psychiatrist told me that depression can cause a lot of seemingly unexplainable pains. But I don't know if it covers all my issues. In addition to the comments I think so many people take the have been doing this for thousands of years statement way too literally. Of course people have been birthing babies since the dawn of time, but they have also been dying birthing babies since the dawn of time. I fully support whatever kind of birth someone chooses as long as they aren putting their baby in danger. Honestly I. I could use this stuff. It my IRL birthday today (Wednesday). Despicable Minions (DM AU) - Wilde/Nelson/Prescott family tree
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Important:
Ruby is still a lesbian in my AU (I didn't change her orientation), however, the times when she was younger, LGBTQ+ people weren't very welcome, so she tried her best to keep it to herself. Jacob knew his wife was into women and despite them getting divorce eventually, they remained friends - Jacob now has a new family, while Ruby has a girlfriend named Ivette.
She also lives with Perry, Patsy and Poppy in Mayflower. And finally, Ruby no longer lives and/or knows Lucy, Tom and their families. By the way, during the events of DM4, Ruby was away from town, enjoying her free time in spa (with Yvette, of course).

[Book tour] Hello everyone!! Today I am really excited to share with you The Reckless Kind by Carly Heath (@carlylynheath). It is a YA Historical fiction that was released on November 2nd. *** Synopsis A genre-defying debut, this queer historical YA centers a wild and reckless trio who fly in the face of small town tradition—full of compassion, love, and determination to live the lives of their choosing. It’s Norway 1904, and Asta Hedstrom doesn’t want to marry her odious betrothed, Nils—even though a domestic future is all her mother believes she’s suited for, on account of her single-sided deafness, unconventional appearance, and even stranger notions. Asta would rather spend her life performing in the village theater with her friends and fellow outcasts: her best friend Gunnar Fuglestad and his secret boyfriend, wealthy Erlend Fournier. But the situation takes a dire turn when Nils lashes out in jealousy—gravely injuring Gunnar. Shunning marriage for good, Asta moves with Gunnar and Erlend to their secluded cabin above town. With few ties left with their families, they have one shot at gaining enough kroner to secure their way of life: win the village’s annual horse race *** Check out my post on my blog Book Notes by Athina through the link in my bio for more info. *** @tbrbeyondtours Check their website for the full book tour schedule. *** #therecklesskind #TBRBeyondTours #carlyheath #booksofig #bookishlife #booklove #booksonbooks #bookloversofinstagram #readingtogether #bibliophilelife #unitedbookstagram #bookstack #readingtime #greekbookstagram #instavivlio #vivlio #diavazo #eucitesc #mybookfeatures #bdstars  #booknotes_athina #ipreview (at Bucharest, Romania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CV_IwlLLk2y/?utm_medium=tumblr

William Lucking, ‘Sons of Anarchy’ actor, dead at 80
William Lucking, the actor best known for his role as biker Piney Winston on the hit series “Sons of Anarchy,” died on Oct. 18 in his Las Vegas home. Lucking was 80.
“Although William often played toughs and strongmen, in his actual life he was an elegant man with a brilliant intellect who loved to argue about politics and current affairs, discuss philosophy and physics and assert fine-pointed opinions about art and poetry,” his wife Sigrid Insull Lucking wrote in an obituary posted on Facebook by his friend and fellow actor Stephen Macht.
Lucking famously played SAMCRO member Piermont “Piney” Winston on 35 episodes of Kurt Sutter’s FX crime drama “Sons of Anarchy,” from the start of the series through the fourth season (2008 to 2011).

Besides being a day of remembrance
Besides being a day of remembrance, this Sunday marks the first full day of regular season NFL football. And the crowd, as we speak, is going wild. The crowd I'm referring to is Twitter of course, and even though there's a heavy sense of 9/11 memories being posted nfl jerseys, there's also cause for celebration now that the NFL is about to take center stage..

With about 3 minutes left and the Sixers holding a two point lead, Evan Fournier beat his man and drove toward the hoop. Embiid rolled over to help, but he didn't fully commit to Fournier; doing so would have left Nikola Vucevic free under the basket, which was what Fournier wanted. So, instead of taking the bait, Embiid forced Fournier to shoot a running 9 foot bank shot from a rather oblique angle an extremely tough shot, which Fournier missed..

Kea heroically rescued from West Coast crevasse

Kea heroically rescued from West Coast crevasse
A glacier guiding crew saved a kea from death after it was stuck in an icy crevasse on the West Coast for three days.
The rescuers tried to use ropes, ladders and ice to save the native bird, but it took a backpack to bring it to safety.
Fox Glacier Guiding senior guide Kelsey Porter said her colleagues heard a kea squawking near a popular feature on the glacier on August 6.
MAT GOODMAN
A kea is a native New Zealand bird and the only true alpine parrot in the world. (File photo)
“[They] tried to do a rescue that first day they saw it, but time was a bit limited ’cause they had to fly [a helicopter] off the glacier, she said.

“One of the guides lowered down into the crevasse and tried to reach for it, but the crevasse was too narrow for him to fit.”
The crevasse was about seven metres deep and about 30 centimetres wide.

Porter joined the rescue team the next day.
“We tried to lower stuff down, like a little basket for it to get into, but it was not very keen.
That day, they saw about 15 kea hopping around the edge of the crevasse, looking out for their stuck friend.
John Kirk-Anderson/Stuff
Kea are mainly found on the forested and alpine regions of New Zealand’s South Island. (File photo)
On the third day, the team lowered down two backpacks. A guide was then lowered down into the crevasse and encouraged the bird onto one of the packs, then pulled the bag up.
“[The kea] was OK and it actually flew away pretty quickly, it was very impressive.”
Kea were common around the glacier, although they had not seen any earlier this year, Porter said.
Mytchall Bransgrove/Stuff
Kea Conservation Trust chairwoman Tamsin Orr-Walker says anyone who spots a kea in danger should call the trust or the Department of Conservation’s hotline.
“We’ve definitely had some battles with them because we keep a lot of our gear on the ice. We have to kea-proof it, they’re pretty cheeky.
“It’s not the first time we’ve found a kea in a crevasse. We found one two years ago, but it was a much shallower crevasse so we were actually able to just bend over and reach in and get it out.”
Porter estimated the temperature on the glacier would have dropped to about -5 degrees Celsius at night.

Fox Glacier on the West Coast.
DOC South Westland operations manager Wayne Costello said it was “wonderful” the guides rescued the kea.
“Kea are terribly inquisitive and can sometimes get themselves in trouble. If people wish to protect kea, the main point is to never feed them and give them space.”
Kea Conservation Trust chairwoman Tamsin Orr-Walker found out about the incident when the guides posted a video of the rescue on Facebook. She thanked the guides for their “fantastic” work.
The kea could have died if it was stuck in the crevasse much longer, she said.
“Kea are particularly adapted for the South Island alpine areas … they are quite a stocky, thick bodied parrot but I don’t think it would’ve lasted an awful lot longer.”
She recommended anyone who found a trapped kea call the Department of Conservation’s (DOC) hotline – 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) – and contact the Kea Conservation Trust through its website.
“We can get that bird supported, [and be] able to band that bird so we can get re-sightings that it’s still alive and to weigh the bird up and check it over before it’s released.”

New York State Wines (1) Introduction, and the Finger Lakes
In August, I travelled to New York State, to take a good look at the wines being made here. Of chief interest were wines from the Finger Lakes and Long Island, the two most significant regions in the state. They’re geographically quite far apart, but they have one thing in common: proximity to water moderates the hot summers and cold winters so it’s possible to grow interesting wine grapes here. In this series of articles, I’ll tell you about the producers I visited, report on my favourite wines, and try to argue why these regions, little heard of outside of the USA, deserve more attention.
Some history
The Eastern United States has a long history of growing grapes for wine. The English made a permanent settlement here in 1607, and by 1609 they had made 20 gallons of wine from grapes found growing in the wild. Vitis vinifera, the Eurasian grape, arrived from Europe in 1619, but repeated early efforts to make wine from these vines were doomed to failure because of the presence of downy and powdery mildew, and, of course, phylloxera. And the wine made from grapes found growing wild wasn’t all that good: they have small bunches with small berries, and the resulting wine is quite low in alcohol and very high in acidity, although it does have good colour.
The first commercial winery in the USA was in Spring Mill in Philadelphia, established in 1786. They made wine from Alexandra, which is what is known as a chance hybrid. The hybrid grapes, resulting from a cross of native varieties with each other, or with Vitis vinifera, produced much more acceptable wines than simply picking wild-grown grapes. To a classic European palate, these wines were a little unusual, but they were to all intents and purposes wine, and there was a market for them. To this day, the various iterations of hybrids, with their disease resistance and cold tolerance, remain important for New York State wine, although since the 1950s some success has been achieved with Vitis vinifera, particularly in the more privileged sites, such as near water bodies where winter lows are moderated.
Riesling, the star of the Finger Lakes
Alexandra was the first hybrid variety to be planted. This was followed by another chance hybrid, Catawba, in 1802. By the late 1850s this variety was responsible for a third of the USA’s wine. Isabella (1816), Delaware (1849) and Concord (1853) were other important hybrids. In the second half of that century, the largest wine-producing states were New York, Ohio, Missouri and New Jersey.
Niagara, a hybrid
So if the Eastern United States – and in particular the Finger Lakes – was such a big deal, what happened to change things? After the repeal of prohibition, all the states had a chance to create their own liquor laws. It turns out that California enacted very liberal and enlightened laws, and they also had a relatively trouble free climate as far as wine was concerned. And, in addition, they also had the marketing genius of the likes of Robert Mondavi who really put the state on the map. So California soared ahead, and New York State was left doing its own thing, quite content to service the local market with no ambitions to change the world.
New York State has five main wine regions. First we have the Finger Lakes and then Long Island, the two regions this series will focus on. Then there is the Hudson River Valley, which covers a large area but which has relatively few vineyards. Lake Eyrie is on the south shore of the eponymous lake, and is a large region of some 30 000 acres of vineyards. But most of these grapes are Concord, used to make grape juice, although there are 23 wineries operating in the region. Then there is the Niagara Escarpment, which is an extension of the Canadian Niagara region, although less developed. The proximity of Lake Ontario provides the climate-moderating effect here. A sixth AVA region is the Champlain Valley, bordering Vermont, but this is really tiny.
  Finger Lakes
The largest wine region in New York State is the Finger Lakes, up-state not far from the Canadian border. To understand the Finger Lakes wine region, you have to understand its history. For most of its life, this wine region has been all about supplying local demand. It has a climate that is challenging for viticulture, but which, in concert with its soils, is capable of producing some really smart wines. But serious, high quality wine hasn’t typically been what the local market has wanted.
Finger Lakes from the Air
Finger Lakes is in New York State. But it’s actually quite a schlep from New York City – it’s closer to Toronto, about a six-hour drive upstate or a similarly long train ride from New York, or more conveniently, a flight from Newark into Rochester, which is how we got there.
The climate here consists of very cold winters, and relatively short summers. But once summer gets going, it can be hot and humid. And there will definitely be some growing season rainfall. The key factor here for viticulture is the presence of the lakes after which the region is named. These provide a moderating effect, stopping it getting too cold in the winter, and then cooling things down in the summer. Then, at the end of the season, they act like radiators helping the vines finish their job of ripening the grapes. The lakes are only 12 000 years old, formed when the last glaciation event. These were fjords of the Ontario lake at one time.
The key viticultural challenges are winter lows, which can kill vines, and then the disease pressure that comes from the humid summers. It was for this reason that the focus here was traditionally on hybrid grape varieties which are cold tolerant and disease resistant. The hybrids are still grown here and currently represent about 35% of the vineyard area.
Three waves of hybrids
A native vine showing the small bunches of small grapes
Hybrids are actually quite interesting, and they can be split into three waves. First, we have the original crosses and the native American varieties. These are the likes of Concord, Catawba, Delaware and Isabella, many of which were chance crossings. Then we have the 2nd generation: the French-American hybrids, produced to combat phylloxera. The roll call of these includes Rougeon, Marechal Foch and Seyval Blanc. Then we have the 3rd generation, produced in the latter part of the 20th century at Universities such as Cornell, Minnesota and Michigan: this would include Cayuga, Vinoles and Traminette. The newer crosses taste less hybridy, and yet still retain cold hardiness and disease resistance.
One important character in the history of Finger Lakes is Philip Wagner, who was a journalist with an interest in winemaking. Wagner moved to London in the 1930s for work, and there discovered reference to the French hybrids, known as hybrids producteurs directes (HPDs). On his return to the USA he found that many were already in vine collections in the USA, and so he began a nursery, and ended up championing their use in the state. These new hybrids made some very nice wines.
After prohibition, four large companies emerged who came to dominate the Finger Lakes, and the wine production of New York State.
The four pioneering companies
The first is Pleasant Valley Wine Company, founded in Hammondsport in 1860. By 1865 they were producing 20 000 bottles of ‘Champagne’, labelled as Great Western Champagne. This won a gold medal at the Vienna Exposition in 1873. In 1961 Pleasant Valley was sold to the second major company, Taylor Wine Company. This was established in 1880 when a cooper, Walter Taylor, moved to Hammondsport and then ended up making wine. Taylor was sold to Coca Cola in 1977. The third was Urbana Wine Company, which was founded in 1865 and traded as Gold Seal Vineyards. By 1870 they were making 120 000 bottles of Champagne and 50 000 bottles of still wine. Notably, Urbana hired Charles Fournier, the young cellar master of Veuve Clicquot, in 1934. Urbana was sold to Segram in 1979. The fourth of these companies was Widmer Wine Cellars, which started in 1888 on Canandaigua Lake.
The emergence of vinifera
It was Dr Konstantin Frank who first really pushed the cause of Vitis vinifera varieties in the Finger Lakes, and his story is a fascinating one. Born in 1899 into a wealthy ethnic German family in Ukraine, Frank became a noted agricultural engineer, eventually earning a PhD. Although his family were on the wrong side in the post-1917 revolution war, they lost their land but remained in their part of Ukraine, where Frank got a job renovating and managing a huge state-owned vineyard. He replanted it with grafted vinifera vines, and famously developed a special plough to earth over the vines for the winter – winter cold was one of the viticultural challenges here. This saved a lot of labour. Then came the second world war, and Frank and his family had to flee the Nazis, then flee the Russians (as an ethnic German things wouldn’t have ended well), and then at the end they managed to find their way to an American-occupied area. Eventually, the family resettled in New York.
As soon as he could earn enough money, Frank headed to Geneva, in the Finger Lakes, where he attempted to get a job more suited to his professional skills. The problem was that although he spoke a number of languages, English wasn’t one of them. Frustratingly for Frank, he could only find low level agricultural work, even though he’d been running a sizeable agricultural college in Ukraine. But he was fortunate to meet Charles Fournier of the Urbana Wine Company. Fournier himself had an interesting background: he came to the USA in 1934 after being headhunted from his role as winemaker with Veuve Clicquot.
The partnership between Frank and Fournier was to prove pivotal in introducing vinifera into the region, although Frank’s insistence that vinifera was the only way to go didn’t endear him to his bosses, whose company was making good money out of wines made from hybrids. Frank, who by all accounts became progressively more stubborn and difficult, left Urbana in 1962 (some accounts say he was fired, others say he had had enough) and began his own vinifera-only winery, which is now one of the leading producers in the region.
The Farm Winery Act
The most significant factor in the development of the Finger Lakes was the Farm Winery Act, passed in June 1976, and it was in response to a crisis. The large wine companies relied on a network of growers. In 1974 and 1975 there were two large harvests, and because the major companies were buying in around a quarter of their needs from California (wine, to blend in with their own), a surplus began to develop. In 1975 Widmer’s only bought part of their contracted harvest, and in in 1976 Taylor’s bought less than the full crop of their 400 growers. But the cost of a winery licence was prohibitively expensive, at $1600 a year, putting off farmers from making wine themselves. The 1976 Act changed this, and slashed the cost to just $125 a year, making it feasible for smaller operations to begin making and selling wine. There were 19 bonded wineries in New York in 1975, and this number rose to 100 in 1985, and currently sits at around 420.
The Finger Lakes is currently in flux. Previously, they have mostly relied on a direct sales model to the local market. This was fine when there were 100 wineries, but now there are 420 plus brewers and distillers, everyone is chasing the same customers. There is a need to sell more widely, and to export. If you sell direct you need a range of wines to satisfy your customers. This can result in large ranges that lack focus, and which carry product lines that tourists like (cheaper, sweeter wines from hybrids) but which have little market potential elsewhere.
There is still a market for sweet hybrid wines
So the region can be split roughly into two bands of producers. First, those with local aspirations, who make a good deal of their money from inexpensive hybrid-based wines, many of which are quite sweet. Then there are producers focusing on vinifera, making more ambitious wines with export potential. Some do a bit of both, of course. On this trip I didn’t like everything I found (it’s very rare for that to happen), but I found plenty of interesting things. The star grape is clearly Riesling, but Cabernet Franc is also strong. Chardonnay is up and down, but Blaufrankisch (which many call Lemberger, the German name) does pretty well. There’s also some interesting Gewurztraminer, and oddities like Rkatsitelli.
