MID-SUMMER IN THE SOUTHERN AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPE

Yesterday was a hot 35 degree day, and being in even worse covid times, we needed to escape the house but not come into contact with anybody even though we are three times vaccinated. So it was a drive through beautiful Victoria Valley and across the Grampians to Moyston and then along a scenic road to the wine making settlement of Great Western where we had a picnic under big old pine trees, listening to the cicadas and gazing on the Seppelt’s grape vines. This drive is best taken on a hot blazing day, stopping the car at intervals to take in the scent of the gum leaves, the shadows cast by the great trees on the bleached long grasses and the shimmering distant views of mountains and sky. It is all enveloping. In the middle image there are emus and kangaroos grazing in the distance. This glorious landscape is at our back door and city folk have to drive three or four hours to experience it, but then you would need to know how to find it as it is away from main roads. Like First Nations people, those of us born and raised in the remote countryside always feel the landscape is in us, and that we are part of the landscape - a bond which is central, strong and everlasting.

THE FOREVER SPRING SIGN, ‘VARIEGATA DI BOLOGNA’ BOURBON ROSE AND A CHILDHOOD SCENT MEMORY

My exhibition Forever Spring; The Art of Flowers has been signposted on the side of a building in Brown St, Hamilton, near the Gallery with a well known Monet quote. This building, or perhaps the one next to it, was the one that my mother trained in as an apprentice hairdresser in the 1940s. Her name was Norma Foster. When she was putting towels on the line behind the shop my father wolf whistled her from the top of an electric pole nearby and then went into the hairdressers to ask her out. They ended up getting engaged in Hamilton and my older brother was born here. Afterwards my father got an SEC posting to Willaura and that is where I grew up.

This rosebud I am watching with great excitement as I have wanted this rose since the 1980s but somehow never managed to acquire it from a specialist rose grower. There are also other roses on my ‘list’ that I still do not have such as ‘Tuscany Superb’. I adore striped roses and I remember I first saw this growing in the kitchen garden at Heide in Melbourne. I am hoping mine is the swirled blackberry jam and cream colours described by Graham Thomas instead of the rather insipid hues that many examples of this cultivar now have. I got my plant from Ross Roses in Willunga, SA as this Is where most of mine have come from. Since this nursery has been established for a very long time, I am hoping I have the more contrasting version.

I am also waiting for the Gallica rose ‘Belle de Crecy’ to flower for the first time (Graham Thomas especially recommends this one), along with the Portland rose ‘Jacques Cartier’. ‘Cornelia’, two  new 1925 Pemberton bred roses of great charm to grow on the metal obelisks have also just flowered for the first time. When I smelt their blooms, the warm musk perfume unlocked an olfactory memory from my childhood. It really does take three or four years for new old roses to reach their peak and many in their first year do not flower at all.

We took a little trip down to Willaura yesterday, intending to find the Whistling ducks and patronize the Bakery - which we did. At the Bakery we bumped into Lois, who kindly offered to open up Willaura Modern so we could see the current exhibition - lucky us! @ladymeadvic has been very busy, producing wonderful layered textiles inspired by her photography and dyed with materials found in the landscape portrayed. Alison Withers used a similar technique of stitching layers of cloth to make pictures, yet they are quite different in style to Carole's pieces. There are paintings by W.H. Brandenburg also and all the work relates to the artist's Sense of Place, relating directly to the landscape of the area - directly outside a window of the old station, in one of Carole's, as Lois pointed out to us. There is also a gorgeous video of drone photography over farmland and the river, and a gobsmacking felted wedding dress...Oh, and we did find the ducks!
