Willow Month Day 3 & Day 9 Favourite Episode/Location
for just the wildwood textposts go (here👍🏻)
Tumblr media
I'm extremely late (which is very on brand😅), and attempting to cram 10 prompts into 2 days. Let's speedrun this! Okay so Episode 5 - Wildwood really exemplifies the theme of love as a narrative force. It also focuses on Jade’s story and the Bone Reavers. AND IT IS GORGEOUS.
Tumblr media
Right from the opening punk music overlaid chase scene, episode 5 is a symphony of the show's artistic form. Also Time For Some Mayhem is a recap of the Bone Reavers history & could basically be Scorpia's theme song. (can this count for my soundtrack day if I'm not done on time🤘🏻)
ALSO LOOK AT THEM SMILING FILMING IT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willow is an ensemble show, but the plot in WIldwood is propelled by Jade, a queer biracial girl finding family and joy in who she is! CONFRONTING HER FEARS. BEING SO BRAVE. We have characters from the culture we were introduced to as the dominant culture (Tir Asleen) actually being in the wrong! Cue a textpost of Kit being a disaster:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wildwood establishes very clearly that character growth is happening before they go through the rest of the trials and tribulations of the quest.
To get really personal here, I had a near death experience as a kid and I just have this insatiable rage at narratives that present traumatic experiences as 'level up' character development like achievements. The forty some minutes we spend in the Wildwood, everyone grows (and gets a little high) in a safe healthy environment. This is like textbook good therapy practice. Leading to the moment we’ve all been waiting for…
THE TANTHAMORE ALMOST KISS!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kit and Jade's love confessions are beautiful. Erin Kellyman said it best:
“Having not seen these shows when I was younger, now being able to be the representation that I didn’t have is something that is so peaceful,” she says. “I know that if I saw this when I was a kid, I would have been completely in love with Kit and Jade, and I would have felt a lot less isolated and scared and weird.” - Erin Kellyman (source)
The scenes leading up to the troll snatch were shot on a closed set because the director wanted Erin Kellyman and Ruby Cruz to be able to be completely comfortable in how vulnerable they were to film that moment between Jade and Kit. We see two characters who have loved each other consciously and unconsciously for years decide to completely go for it.
Wildwood has everything: A celebratory lens on the survival of oppressed peoples, sapphic love confessions, ERIN KELLYMAN, fluffy bonding between core characters, ERIN KELLYMAN SMILING (seriously she's literally so beautiful), great soundtrack, beautiful sets, world-building, ERIN KELLYMAN DANCING, and character development so breathtaking I cried. (Also might've cried about how pretty Erin Kellyman is)

so ive been thinking about willow again as always, and i want to talk for a moment about how boorman isn't an idiot and i think he genuinely might have had more of a plan for the bone reavers than we saw.
boorman knows things, he reads people and he has travelled around, but he's also dramatic af and wants his moment.
he knew his reappearance would be met with mixed opinions, and that he'd have to try to win scorpia over again if he wanted things to get back to whatever they'd been between them before. but i think that his full plan was interrupted by kit and elora breaking free.
i think he was just waiting for the right time to tell scorpia about jade, because he had probably worked it out. the right time didn't come, because he was busy dealing with his own stuff first and trying to get back into scorpias good books again himself, before trying to save the group; and kit and elora interrupted him.
boorman knows the bone reavers, and its implied he knows scorpia intimately, so he will know what the mark of kael looks like. even if he doesn't remember it exactly he knows enough about the bone reavers to know of their traditions and what a mark like that means.
jade, has been on this quest with him for a long time at this point. her hair is tied up when he first meets her, they spend weeks in close proximity and we can't forget that hug at nockmaar. chances are high that he would have seen the back of her neck, and he's the only member of the group to really truly understand what the symbol means. but he's also not an idiot, and knows that jade probably wouldn't trust him if he suddenly sprung that information on her on a normal day of their adventure, so it makes sense that he wouldn't have brought it up.
idk maybe this is all a ramble and im putting too much faith in him. maybe it wasn't part of his plan.
but even if he never planned to do anything with the info, he definitely had already connected the dots, bc there's no way he wouldn't have seen and worked it out.

I love that a lot of people (myself included) went into Willow expecting Kit and Jade to be this slow burn thing building across the entire season only to be completely blindsided by this in episode one.

Okay but in the beginning of Same Time, Same Place, there is a joke about Anya not wanting her spellcasting with Willow to get too sexy. The show literally say "remember that two women casting a spell together usually means they're having sex? well we want to make sure you understand that this time it's just for plot reasons." They acknowledge that you might want to read it that way based on previous seasons, but you shouldn't, in that situation.
Anyway in the end of the same episode, when Willow and Buffy hold hand and do it on Willow's bed, that acknowledgement is missing.

That scene where Jade and Scorpia try very hard to kill each other and succeed in beating the shit out of each other, and our gang is so so stressed out and the Bonereavers are just living for it

diver down pod update!!!
so i was just catching up on some of the recent interactions on the pod episodes and wanted to give a little update cause i feel like it's been a while!
first off, i'm still absolutely floored that that many people have listened to me ramble for even a minute, much less over 20 episodes worth, so thank you thank you thank you.
second of all, due to the writer and actor strikes as well as my own burnout post-jiara week, i haven't recorded anything new yet for the pod and wouldn't expect anything in the near future. if y'all have found this blog recently through the pod, then you might've noticed that i've been posting other fandoms lately, and that's just how i've been feeling! not super in my obx or jiara feels at the moment, so even when the strikes eventually end, it might take me a second to start recording again. or maybe i'll slingshot so fucking fast back into the brain rot as soon as they start filming again WHO KNOWS
basically, thank you to anyone who's listened and interacted during this content drought, i genuinely appreciate y'all so so much, and i hope you'll stick around through this dry patch so we can scream about obx again sometime in the future, whenever that may be!!!!

hMMMM. OK. so. new thought. new fcg theory:
they’re obviously an ancient aeormaton, but i’m gonna take it a step further here and say fresh cut grass is literally one of the OG aeormaton revolutionaries. like, to the point of being a famous historical figure of aeor. an actual hero that personally fought for the freedom of their kind.
and so, fcg has basically spent this entire time with bell’s hells re-living the discovery of his own self-worth and autonomy, after his memories were reset/locked away somehow. i think that would make a lot of things about his journey thus far very sad but also very poignant. dialogue like this, for example, gets a bit more “oomph” if this theory is true:
Tumblr media
and it would also make a lot of songs on fcg’s playlist (”robots” by flight of the conchords is the big one) make total sense

I was considering just responding to this one with something snarky, like “takes one to know one”. But I like Amity too much to leave it at that, so let’s look at this line a bit closer.
Ahaha whoops this one got a bit long. Cut for length!
When we were first introduced to Amity, she was doing the exact thing she’s now accusing Luz of - bullying a peer. And she was at it again last episode as well. By definition, that makes her a bully herself. But I don’t see Amity as the type to be deliberately hypocritical in this way, so I have to conclude that she doesn’t think that what she’s doing is bullying at all. This is very interesting, because Amity has felt like a fairly self-aware character up until now... but with this line, suddenly she has an enormous blind spot in her perception of herself that’s waiting to be addressed.
When it comes to her relationship with Willow, Amity is unnecessarily cruel and insulting towards her former friend. Willow is hurt by what she does, and Amity needs to acknowledge that, especially if I’m correct and she hasn’t realised it at all. Even back in Episode 3, part of me wondered what Amity was trying to accomplish by interrupting Willow’s private pep talk to herself in the woods, and I still think there’s a slight possibility that she wasn’t intentionally beating Willow down.
What she did in that scene, underneath all the condescension, was: she assessed the state of Willow’s abomination, had her own abomination tell Willow she was a “star”, and said that she thought it was possible for Willow to get a passing grade. Now, every single one of these statements was accompanied by a whole load of insults and sarcastic remarks, but thinking about this from Amity’s perspective, did she really realise how that would come across? I’m not sure.
I don’t think I can say this for certain until I’m able to see how Amity and Willow’s dynamic develops over the course of the series, but I think it’s possible that Amity was legitimately trying to encourage Willow. But between her having zero people skills, and being surrounded by people like Boscha and her siblings who are incapable of being nice to people, any positive effect her words could have had was drowned out by layers of insults and condescension. (In fact, I would go so far as to speculate that the company she tends to keep probably has a lot more influence on her general demeanor than we may know at this point.)
Then we come to Episode 6, where Amity’s insult towards Willow is a direct response to someone else - in this case, Boscha, who opened with a deliberate attack towards Willow in a very similar way to what Amity was doing in Episode 3. It’s Amity’s words in particular that hurt Willow, and lead to pretty much everything that happens with the Moonlight Conjuring in this episode, but Amity doesn’t really seem invested in what she’s saying at all. Adding in her statement in this episode that she doesn’t want to seem cruel, but she can’t afford to show weakness - even if the context of this statement was her dynamic with Luz, and not with Willow - and it makes me wonder, just a little.
When it comes to Amity’s relationship with Luz... things are definitely a bit different. Luz doesn’t have the history with Amity that Willow does, and although she has challenged Amity in both Episode 3 and Episode 5 for the sake of one of her friends, the result of both confrontations was that Amity was the one who ended up feeling hurt and humiliated. Luz doesn’t want to be Amity’s enemy, though she won’t hesitate to do what she feels is necessary to look out for her friends. But Amity doesn’t know that.
From Amity’s perspective, Luz showed up pretending to be an abomination for who knows what reason, and the very first thing she did was get Amity in trouble. Even if the principal took Amity’s side, she was still sent to his office in front of everyone in the cafeteria, and (although she didn’t see this herself) Luz was nothing but happy about this at the time. Then when Amity vented her frustration at Luz because it seemed as if Luz was pretending to be a witch, too, Luz responded by challenging her to a duel, proceeding to cheat, and then having her exposed for supposedly cheating. Even if everyone in that audience knew it was Eda and Lilith who were actually cheating, it was still humiliating for her and she’s still upset about it.
The thing is, up until now, Amity’s perception of both Willow and Luz seems to have been... slightly off. She’s seen how powerful Willow is, but she still says that she has no talent. Nothing truly bad came of her brief humiliations, but it feels as if it did, and so she can’t let those experiences go. Again, I can’t say for sure what her intentions towards Willow are, but with Luz, she tends to assume the worst of her, because she keeps witnessing Luz’s terrible decisions and thinking that Luz is doing all this stuff on purpose when she really isn’t. Even in this episode, Luz didn’t want to hurt Amity, but she got so caught up in accompanying Amity’s cool siblings that she couldn’t bring herself to speak up against what they were doing until it was practically too late.
Ultimately, I think Amity is wrong here. Luz isn’t a bully, but Amity is. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Amity is hurt right now, and it’s at least in part because of Luz’s inaction. I’m certain that Luz will do whatever she can to make things right, and I can only hope that Amity will eventually do the same for the person that she’s hurt as well. If Amity truly doesn’t realise that she’s been engaging in bullying herself, I hope she’ll figure it out sooner rather than later, and give her old friend a proper apology. Willow deserves that much.
Anyway, back to the episode... takes one to know one, Amity!

I will die with my hc that out of all her children, Whitley is the one that takes most after Willow. Not only in physical traits, no no no, I mean in interests, gestures, hobbies or things they like to do when they’re not feeling the overwhelming pressure of the patriarch of the family breathing down their necks 24/7.
Like having tea parties or planting flowers!~

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Season 2
Ep 5 - Reptile Boy
Bitch that Bollywood/Hindi reference came out of nowhere lmao. Wtf! Not sure how I feel.
Ahh, buffy and her angel dreams.
Giles, give buffy a break!
Another guy is into buffy lmao. Cordelia is gonna die.
Tom, a new guy, ahhh. Let's see how long you live.
Yeah, xander and willow will not make sense romantically. I mean it makes sense why they would develop crush/feelings but
Shut up, Angel. Just bone already.
Damn, the tension and chemistry between angel(I hate the ship name)🔥
Still can't stand Cordelia. Girl, shut up.
Angel barely says two words in the whole season let alone to you buffy.
Ahh to be in school and to think what a wild, great place is college.
Buffy's hair really suck in this episode. Gotta give Cordelia this one, she was right.
Buffy girl, you shouldn't have drank this much.
Knew these boys were culty. I swear all good-looking guys are.
Cordelia honey, what do you think buffy is , a supernatural encyclopedia .
'Angel how do you shave?', Damn, willow really be asking really questions. Genuinely though, how?
Damn willow.
Cordelia STFU.
Ewww, that was ugly and creepy. What in the name of the cult is this? At least find a hot God.
Angel better kill this green robe guy.
That was easy, the snake worm thing just died in one swing.
I still hate Cordelia. She's sometimes funny but still can't stand her.
Xander is funny.
Nothing really happened in this episode. I mean, its a still a filler episode but still was a little slow and less exciting. Wasn't as in it as I was in previous episodes.
No oz, no progress for oz/willow. A little progress for angel(why this name, people !).
That's all I guess, onto the next episode. See ya.
