Gurrur Warra - Brolga Dance

In a well-known Dreaming about Brolga1, she was a beautiful girl obsessed with dancing. A wirrinun (shaman) wanted her for his wife but she refused, as she refused all men. Dancing was her love and nothing else distracted her. He harboured resentment until one day, seeing her dancing alone on the plain he takes his chance, changes himself into a willywilly (small whirlwind) and sweeps her into it with the intention of abducting her. The Great Spirit intervenes and she is transformed into Brolga as we see her today. She is still dancing.

You know when you’re v young & on social media you may have had a crazy email addresses and account names on SM. Once you’re in the real world and search for a job we changed those names to more appropriate ones. More professional ones I even remember HR used to say they’d look at the email and social media and decide not to hire a person. Apparently M never had to work for real. She’s over 30 and names she uses sounds so juvenile. What is she 17? Not going to even comment on the bar’s name.

I just tried to remember my very first e-mail address or name on message boards and I noticed that while they weren’t too embarrassing, they still were something less professional than what would be okay for an address when you’re an adult. And I even had a good laugh, because one of my friends had an e-mail address that had something like “willywilly” in it. Imagine using an e-mail address like that nowadays! People would laugh and then throw away your application right away. I mean, who would want to e-mail a person with such an address? (For the record, she has a normal e-mail address nowadays.)

During one of my lectures in university, one of the profs used to mention every week how we should all choose an e-mail address that has our real name in it. We can have a second e-mail address for “fun purposes”, but for everything professional, we should use another address. I can’t even tell you how important this was for this prof - and he was 100% right. You want to be taken seriously in your job. You want to show who you are and what you can do. Choosing such a juvenile name for your business doesn’t make people take you serious. They see that name and immediately judge your character. It doesn’t even have to be on purpose. It’s automatic. Just like when we go out and see a store with a strange name. We immediately judge that place one way or another. Childish names might sound fun at first, but that loses it’s novelty quickly. If it’s a clever name, then it’s different, but this here isn’t even a clever name. People will get the wrong impression. Just like people would get the wrong impression if your e-mail address is “humptydump@whatever.com”. They might laugh now, but they won’t even go near it. Not everybody has this twisted sense of humor - and I can’t even call it humor without pulling a face. That name fits to the general behavior though. Throwing tantrums and acting like a toddler who doesn’t get what they want. Yep, it fits 100%.
