With all the pressures caused by winter weather freezing vines reducing the grape harvest this year and forest fires over the past several years, our BC wineries need your support.  I have two wines, one white and one red, from BC’s Blasted Church Vineyards to review for you.  Blasted Church Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2022 is a white Bordeaux blend.  Blasted Church Vineyards Cabernet…

Make today an awesome #Twosday with our favorite Icewine duo. Come taste the sweet velvety luxury that our Paradise Ranch Icewines have to offer. On the left is a Chardonnay icewine, it has lucious smooth flavours or rich apricot, melon, and peach with a clean and crisp finish of honey and melon. On the right is a Pinot Noir, it has rich and dark fruit and cherry flavors overlaid with sweet port-like fruits notes. It has a very soft tannis and a long lingering sweet finish. Both are best consumed on its own or paired with soft cheeses and sweet desserts . . . . . #whitewine #redwine #awardwinningwine #icewine #dessertwine #winesofbc #wineoftheday #buyBC #BCWine #bcwinecountry #winelover #okanganlifestyle #instawine #okanaganwineries #winerytour #naramatabench #naramatabenchwineries #winery #okanaganwinery #winetasting #explorebc #bench1775 #bench1775winery #winetasting #tastingroom (at Bench 1775 Winery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7mWuMyBb1l/?igshid=s42sadne8eat

Cheers to Rosé Wines and National Rosé Day
Cheers to Rosé Wines and #NationalRoséDay #bcwine #Cava #Prosecco #Champagne @winesofbc @liquiditywines @shwineshop @okcrushpad
June 10 is National Rosé Day, but what do you know about Rosé wines?  Here’s some background so you can further appreciate these wines and toast a glass or two on June 10. What are Rosé Wines? Stellar Jay Sparkling Rose Rosé wines, often referred to as rosé, are a category of wines that bridge the gap between red and white wines. They are known for their beautiful pink colour, which can range…

Have you ever wanted to compare a Red and a #Rosé wine made by the same winery and the same vintage? What are the differences and similarities between the 2 wines?  I had that chance with @okcrushpad free form Cabernet Franc 2019 and Cab Franc Rosé 2019. Both come from an organically farmed vineyard in Osoyoos.  One thing I like about it is that the wines are fermented in concrete and have no oak contact, so you are just tasting the fruit.  These wines are #organic and #vegan friendly. free form Cabernet Franc Rosé 2019 Appearance: A lighter bright copper colour in the glass. Nose: A medium intensity nose that is quite toasty/flint, with lesser red berries.  Once the wine opens up a bit in the glass you start to get strawberry aromas as well. Palate: This wine is dry but as it warms up tastes off-dry.  It has a thicker, round mouthfeel, with a slight acidic prickle.  An interesting waxy texture to start but fades with time in the glass.  Light red cherries, strawberries and red fruit flavours, plus light pepperiness and flintiness. Finish: A medium length finishing with toasty/flintiness and tart red fruits. free form Cabernet Franc 2019 Appearance: A medium-plus intensity garnet with ruby that is 50% translucent from rim to core.  Quite a nice colour. Nose: A medium intensity nose with a distinct vegetal aroma with lesser red berries. Palate: Dry, medium-plus body, semi-round with bright acidity.  A mix of vegetal, bright red fruits/berries and some salty minerality.  The tannins are very light open first opening but get a little stronger with some time in the glass.  Finish: A medium length finishing with bright red fruits, tart red berries, a touch of pepperiness and medium-minus tannins. Stay tuned for my full tasting notes, including decanting, on mywinepal.com. #winewriter #somm #winemedia #redwine #rosewine #winelovers #wineblogger #luxury #bcwineries #bcvqa #coolclimatewine #drinklocalwine #buybcwine #bcwine #bcfoodie #winesofbc #CabernetFranc https://www.instagram.com/p/CQHnKU9s7gS/?utm_medium=tumblr

It is so hot outside, I decided to open 2 bottles of White BC wine made by @okcrushpad from the #Okanagan.  The 2 bottles are 1. Narrative Chenin Blanc 2019 and 2. Free Form Vin Gris 2019.  In case you have not heard about Vin Gris, it is a very light Rose wine made from red grapes.  I believe this Vin Gris is made from Pinot Noir grapes.  This wine has gone through quite a process from concrete fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation, and then ageing 6 months on lees. Chenin Blanc is still a relatively new grape to many BCers, but it is quite established around the world, especially in the Loire Valley in France, and in South Africa.  It is a very food-friendly grape. Free Form Vin Gris 2019 Appearance: A bright clear medium intensity golden pear skin. Nose: Medium-plus intensity with subtle aromas mixing ripe apples and pears, some stoniness and blossom, and apricots with swirling. Palate: Dry, medium-plus body, with a silky, round thicker mouthfeel, that is balanced with acidic prickle upon the first sip.  That acidity smooths out on the mid-palate.  Pears, pear skin, and peppery flavours, plus ripe apples with air.  You also get some grape stem woodiness. Finish: A medium plus length finishing with lingering ripe pears, pepperiness, then a touch of honey and apricot at the very end. Narrative Chenin Blanc 2019 Appearance: A medium intensity bright lemon colour. Nose: A lighter nose with mainly toastiness, a hint of apple. Palate: Dry, smooth and round with medium acidity.  Very minerally.  Toasty, pears, stony, and apple flavours.  There is a tart tone overlain on these flavours. Racy and zippy flavours.   Finish: A medium plus length finishing with crisp apple and tart finish.  A little peppery at the very end.  Stay tuned for my full tasting notes, including decanting, on mywinepal.com. #winewriter #somm #winemedia #whitewine #winelovers #wineblogger #luxury #bcwineries #bcvqa #coolclimatewine #drinklocalwine #buybcwine #bcwine #bcfoodie #winesofbc #vingris #cheninblanc @winebcdotcom https://www.instagram.com/p/CQmptYmMpFW/?utm_medium=tumblr

I've always enjoyed comparing these 2 #Riesling wines from @harperstrail from #Kamloops.  The wines are always different yet come from the same vineyard, just different blocks.  I've written about past vintages of these wines that you can read about on mywinepal.com.  Let me tell you about the 2019 vintage.  Harper's Trail Thadd Springs Vineyard Pioneer Block Riesling 2019 - This wine has a medium intensity blend of straw and lemon colours. It has a lighter intensity nose, but has deep honeysuckle aroma along with lesser orange and lemon.  This wine is off-dry, medium plus body and flavour intensity.  Round with soft, controlled fruit flavours.  There is a light acidic prickel at the start but it fades quickly and then you get a smooth mouth feel.  Ripe pears, citrus with pith, light peach and toast/flint on the palate.  This wine has a medium plus length, with honey, butterscotch lemon, and pith.  Steeliness on the finish. Harper's Trail Thadd Springs Vineyard Silver Mane Block Riesling 2019 -  Medium intensity lemon colour.  It has a medium plus intensity nose with citrus and lemon with lesser amounts of petrol, white flowers, lime, honey, peach, and with air you get oranges.  It is off-dry, semi-round with a light, airy mouthfeel. Very light acidic prickle gives this wine its body. Acidic tension.  Juicy, bright flavours of citrus, stone fruit and pears along with a touch of honey.  Stony minerality. It finishes with a mix of tart and sweet citrus, some bitter leaf, then some honey and a hint of pepperiness. Stay tuned for my full tasting notes on mywinepal.com. #wineoclock #wines #grape #winetourism #somm #drinkwine #whitewine #winelovers #wineblogger #bcwineries #bcvqa #coolclimatewine #drinklocalwine #buybcwine #mywinepallikes #bcwine #bcfoodie #winesofbc #luxury #mywinepalRecommends https://www.instagram.com/p/CC1IhQqBsFq/?igshid=mlf1gqcy7cqn

My first Rosé wine to review this year comes from @aashawines on the #Naramata Bench.  This small, husband and wife-run winery aim at producing small volume, high-quality wines.  I received 3 of their wines to review, and I decided to start with the Rosé wine.  I really like the labels drawn by their friend Reena Mistry.  The Rosé has a picture of two cats on it, and being a former cat owner (or did the cat own me?) I can understand why you may call a cat a "Little Monster".  But a loveable monster.  Let me tell you about this wine. Aasha Wines Little Monster Syrah Rosé 2019 Appearance: A medium bright clear tawny orange colour. Nose: Medium-minus nose that has some lees that quickly burns off.  You then get more toast, along with lesser amounts of dried stone fruits and strawberries.   Palate: Dry and round with a thicker, medium-plus body and a viscous mouthfeel.  This wine also does have an acidic bite to it to balance the roundness and viscosity.  A wide range of flavours with toastiness and dried fruit at the top.  You also get strawberries, red cherries and a hint of orange and citrus with swirling.  And a mix of stoniness and salty minerality.   Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with some bitterness, citrus and dried fruits, a toasty edge and light pepperiness. This toastiness on the nose and palate is interesting to me as this wine is fermented in stainless steel.  No oak contact.  So there is something in their terroir that is bringing out this component.  Stay tuned for my full tasting notes, including decanting, on mywinepal.com. #winewriter #somm #winemedia #rosewine #winelovers #wineblogger #luxury #bcwineries #bcvqa #coolclimatewine #drinklocalwine #Okanagan #buybcwine #bcwine #bcfoodie #winesofbc @winebcdotcom https://www.instagram.com/p/CYwzVj6vxIE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Do you like diamonds?  Have you heard of wine diamonds?  They are actually tartrate crystals that have precipitated out of a wine.  You typically find these wine diamonds on the bottom of the wine cork, which is what I saw when I opened a bottle of @poplargrovewinery #Merlot 2016.  This is the second wine over the last two months that I've tasted that have these crystals.  Don't worry, they are not harmful. Poplar Grove Winery Merlot 2016 Appearance: A deeper garnet colour that has a touch of bricking at the edge. Nose: A medium intensity nose with rich ripe deep aromas covering cassis, black cherries, leather, dark chocolate, plus touches of oak and vanilla. Palate: Dry with a lighter, lean mouthfeel, but becomes a bit rounder and fuller with some swirling in your glass.  Fine lighter intensity tannins.  Medium-plus intensity flavours of plums, blueberries, blackberries, black cherries, dark chocolate and oak on the palate, plus sweet spices become more evident as the wine opens up in your glass.  Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with black cherries, and touches of capsicum, leather, pepperiness, cedar and oak flavours.  Light tannins. This is my first wine to review in 2022, @bordertownwine #GrunerVeltliner 2018.  A BC wine coming from Osoyoos in the south Okanagan.  Gruner Veltliner is not yet a commonly known white grape here in BC, but it should become more well-known.  The grape is widely grown in Austria. It reminds me a bit like Riesling from the Claire Valley in Australia. Bordertown Vineyards & Estate Winery Gruner Veltliner 2018 Appearance: A bright clear medium intensity lemon colour in the glass. Nose: Medium-plus intensity aromas of lemon, peaches and apricots, white flowers, and a hint of petrol. Palate: Dry and round but has a strong acidic edge that gives it a lighter mouthfeel.  The acidity does start off with a prickle on your tongue but fades quickly.  Pronounced flavours, mostly lemon and peach, with touches of lime and honey.  Bright flavours.   Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with tart citrus and peach flavours and apricots at the very end.  Mouthwatering acidity on the finish. I tried this wine with Indian food from @agratandoori in Burnaby.  How was the pairing? Stay tuned for my full tasting notes on this wine, including decanting and my food pairing notes, on mywinepal.com. #winewriter #somm #winemedia #whitewine #wineandfood #winelovers #wineblogger #luxury #bcwineries #bcvqa #coolclimatewine #drinklocalwine #Okanagan #buybcwine #bcwine #bcfoodie #winesofbc https://www.instagram.com/p/CYW7tuuPhTa/?utm_medium=tumblr

How would you like a fresh white sipping wine that reminds you of ripe fruits from the Okanagan and elsewhere?  I have that for you with @valleycommons 2020 Harvest Table Wine. A blend of 56% #Muscat, 22% #Viognier, 22% #Chardonnay grapes.  I can see this wine being enjoyed with some soft cheeses and bread with friends.  I am also going to give it a try with some Asian stir-fried noodles today.  I will let you know how it goes in my article on mywinepal.com. Valley Commons 2020 Harvest Table Wine Appearance: A bright, clear, medium intensity lemon colour. Nose: Medium intensity aromas with a mix of orange, bramble leaf, honey, peach, tropical fruit and lychee.  Is that enough to entice you to take a sip? Palate: Off-dry, round with a thicker mouthfeel.  There is a light acidic prickle to start but fades around the mid-palate.  Peach, tropical fruit, orange, peach, bramble leaf, and some toastiness (some grape stems in the fermentation?) on the palate. Finish: A medium length finishing with a bit of pepperiness, and orange, lemon, peach, tropical fruit and bramble leaf flavours.  Tart fruits on the finish.
