He will just make sure that you don't die

Dear, sweet Hosea… Though he always exuded this laid back air and functioned with no end of aplomb, there was always something tragic about him to me. There he was at the end of his life, and he had to watch his family fall apart at the hands of a man that he once considered one of his closest and most trusted friends.

It always seemed like he was trying to lay a path in an effort to give them direction, a thing that speaks to the well of care that’s at the core of him. It also hints at his own insecurities I think. He was always trying to teach something to the others, and while that was motivated in part by his wanting to pass on his wisdom in his final days/make them as self-sufficient as possible, I also think he wanted to make sure that he wasn’t forgotten.

He didn’t want his legacy to only live on in his crimes, but in the people he loved best. Upon seeing that the gang itself was doomed his focus became narrower. He would fight for the gang, yes, but he was far more invested in the people that it was comprised of—they were his driving purpose by the end of things. If he had a special someone in his life, however, I think it would’ve helped to keep him from sinking into the silent melancholy that he’d been privately giving himself over to for years…

…gah, I really went there huh? Sorry, I’m having a lot of Hosea feelings for some reason lol. HCs for another day/post ig…

To my dearest love,

I often find myself wondering how we, or rather I, got here. Now don’t you worry, I won’t go harping on about age gaps and the like—I’ve already accepted that that’s a battle that I’m ever destined to lose. What I will say is that with age comes wisdom, and I’d have to be a right fool to turn down the honor of having such an amazing person love on me.

You really are just too much, you know that? Naturally I mean this in the best way possible. I like too much. The excess of joy and laughter and hope that you’ve brought into my life is something that I never thought I would have again. It almost feels greedy of me, honestly, getting a second chance at love like this. Most are lucky if they experience it once, but here I am falling all over again like someone half my age. I’d honestly forgotten what it was like, how good it felt to be in love—but sweetheart, rediscovering it with you has, and continues to be, a delight.

Though I always do my best to return all that you give to me a hundredfold, with today being Valentine’s Day I figured it was a good time for me to do a little something extra. Something like dinner and dancing at that place that just opened downtown. Now I won’t lie, these old bones can’t move like they used to, but I’m sure I can manage a turn or two around the dancefloor…

I visit your blog once in a while and I’ve seen you give really good advice and I was hoping you would offer some of your wisdom to me (or you could ahead and ignore everything and write about Alec drinking a milkshake, if that’s what you prefer. No judgment). How do you cope with insecurities? It’s a big problem for me and I try my best to love myself but I’m in dire need for advice (I’ve asked 6 other people!! I need help!). Thanks ❤️

I am sorry this one took a while to answer. I was not in a headspace to give advice.

Hmmm. Let’s see, insecurities huh?

Now some might not agree with this, but in my opinion, you can never permanently get rid of insecurities. Even if you do, you always find something new to obsess over. If you are finally over your insecurities about your job, then suddenly you would start to feel insecure about your personal relationships. My point is, it is something we do because it’s a part of who we are as human beings. We like to worry about things and we like to fix things - because it makes us feel normal and motivated, as if there is something to be constantly achieved.

Because if everyone was perfectly happy with everything they have and who they are, they would have no motivation to do or be better. So, we keep fixating on what’s wrong with us instead of what’s right.

You know these asks games on tumblr that say ‘tell me five things you like about yourself’? - Many of us find that incredibly hard to do. That’s because we are used to thinking about things we don’t like about ourselves instead of thinking about things we do like about ourselves. We obsess over thoughts such as ‘how do I make this better?’ or ‘why am I not better at this than that person?’ instead of obsessing over thoughts such as ‘yikes I am so much better than I was last year’ or ‘maybe this is just not my thing I wonder what else I can try’.

When it comes to dealing with insecurities, in my experience, here are some things that might help:

Rule number one is to admit them. The more you deny it and pretend like it doesn’t exist, the harder it is to understand them or overcome them.

Rule number two is to choose what you can and cannot fix. Like I said, there are things that you cannot change about yourself, no matter how hard you try and then there are things that you can change if you are willing to work hard at it. So, pick insecurities that you can actually work on. Be realistic with your goals. It’s okay to give up on certain things and accept that they are forever going to be shitty. Stop beating yourself up about it and focus on what you can change. Instead of trying to fix something that will only make you feel disappointed, try to fix something that might at least make you feel better for giving it a shot. It could something small like completing a course online or getting or a job or losing a couple of pounds or reaching out to an old friend - pick insecurities you can turn into strengths. The others that you can’t change and that cannot be fixed? Fuck ‘em.

Rule number three is to focus on yourself. One of the biggest reasons why people find it difficult to get over their insecurities is because even if we accept ourselves and make peace with ourselves - the people around are never on the same page. They might keep pointing these out, which might make it so much harder to work on your personal progress. In this case, there are two things I do. First, everytime someone says something negative about me (something that is not constructive criticism) I pity them instead of pitying myself. For example, I have an aunt who always make comments about my skin colour. Before, when I was a teenager, whenever she commented on my skin color, I would think ‘oh god, i need to make myself fair or why can’t I be fair like the other girls etc’ but now my thoughts are something like ‘we are from south asia and my parents are hella brown and I am supposed to be brown too how the fuck am I supposed to be miraculously white you ignorant imbecile?’

That little rant brings me to my second point, don’t feel about pointing out when people make you feel horrible about myself. For example, my sisters are much fairer than me (idk what’s the obsession with skin color smh) and they always make comments but my dark skin. So, now everytime they make a comment, they get a rant about the consequences of bullying on self-esteem and the unfair gender expectations in terms of skin colour and attractiveness. Now my sisters don’t make these comments anymore. I am not sure if my rants actually made sense to them or they just don’t want to listen my lectures again. My point is, don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad about yourself. We do enough of that to ourselves, there is no need for others to make it worse. While you can take your time to work on your insecurities and get better control of your negative thoughts, do not wait too long to ask other people to shut the hell up. Your insecurities belong to you and you fix them or live with them or do whatever you want as you see fit. No one else should tell you what to do.

I hope this makes sense. I hope I didn’t overwhelm you. In essence, admit your fears, pick your battles and don’t let anyone tell you what to do. The only person who is worth all your time, effort and love - is yourself. So, make sure you give yourself all the time and effort and love you need. Do it how you see fit. I hope you figure it out. In The End - Michael Langdon x Fem! Reader

Summary: Michael has to end things with Y/N in order to protect her.

A/N: I got my wisdom teeth out on Wednesday so I’ve been very out of it, hazy and tired while recovering. I still wanted to post something like I do every Friday so I wrote this! Sorry if it seems off or loopy or has mistakes 🙃

Warnings: Angst, mean! Michael, sadness, swearing, shorter than my other writings, loopy writing probably smh

The words, “I never want to lose you,” replay in Y/N’s head repeatedly. The soft tone of Michael’s voice and the huskiness to his words, yet so utterly sweet. It sent a shiver through her when he whispered it to her, cuddling up to her body as he brought her closer into him as he laid beside her in his bed.

The imagery of the memory was still fresh and clear in her mind. She’d pushed her fingers through his short blond locks, smiling and leaning over to kiss him. “You never have to,” she had whispered back to him.

But now, just days later, it was ending.

The words Michael just spoke blindsided her. She had known something was bothering him, she could see it in his eyes. He was more quiet, faked a lot of smiles, and had been less affectionate all day. She wanted to ask Michael what was bothering him, but figured asking when they got home from being out would be better. She’d hope Michael would open up and tell her what was wrong. But when he had, she never expected it to be this.

The silence in the room was deafening as Y/N sat on Michael’s bed, trying to conjure up any response. But she was so confused, so shocked and hurt, she couldn’t find her voice to reply.

“Did you hear me,” Michael says, grabbing Y/N’s attention away from her racing mind. She looks over at him as he stands at the foot of his bed, looking at her impassively. Of course she’d heard him. They’d just gotten home from going out to lunch. Y/N had sat down on Michael’s bed, asking what he wanted to do for the rest of the evening, gradually wanting to transition to asking what was bothering Michael. But he was bringing it up all on his own, the words, “I don’t want to be with you anymore,” leaving Michael’s mouth. It caught her off guard; she wasn’t sure what he had actually said. But once they had processed, she turned her head away, a series of thoughts racing through her head while her heart began stirring in a negative way. That’s when the memory of Michael telling her he never wanted to lose just a few days ago were replaying in her head at that moment as she tried to connect everything together. None of it made sense. “Y/N,” Michael says. Y/N stares at him. “Yes, I heard you,” she says calmly. Michael turns his head away, crossing his arms. “I don’t.. I don’t understand what’s happening,” Y/N admits. She pushes a hand through her hair, exasperated. She shakes her head. “This came out of nowhere,” she states. “I know,” Michael replies, looking at her. “You know?” She raises her eyes. “Then, can you explain to me? What is going through your mind? Where did this come from?” “I don’t want you anymore,” Michael half-shrugs, the words flowing carelessly out of his mouth. She sucks in a breath, chuckling a bit humorlessly. “Just like that?” She shakes her head. “With no reason? Just changed your mind?” “Shit happens,” Michael says monotone. “No,” Y/N stands up. “Shit does not just happen, not like this. Not with us,” she gestures. “What’s going on?” She asks, narrowing her eyes. “Don’t make this any harder than it needs to me,” Michael says to her. “I deserve an explanation at the very least, don’t I?” Y/N asks, crossing her arms now. “I.. don’t want to talk about it,” Michael looks down. “Oh, you don’t want to talk about it? Is this inconveniencing you?” She glares. “If you’re going to end this, then you explain yourself first. You owe me that much, Michael,” Y/N states, voice raising lightly. Michael sighs, looking over at her. “Do you understand why I’m so confused and caught off guard?” Michael doesn’t say anything. “Just the other day you were telling me how much you loved me. How you always wanted to be with me, that you never wanted to lose me,” she shakes her head lightly in confusion. “Now it’s done?” She narrows her eyes. “You don’t want me anymore?” Michael sighs. “Were you lying?” Y/N asks, trying to hold herself together to not show herself breaking down. “Y/N,” Michael shuts his eyes. “That’s the only explanation I can think of,” she says, taking a few steps towards him. “There’s no way you could lose those types of feelings for someone, not that fast. She wipes them away quickly, trying not to show this vulnerable side of herself to Michael in this moment. “Y/N, please,” Michael turns around to her again. “’Y/N, please,’ ‘Y/N just,’ ‘Y/N this’! Can’t you fucking say anything else but my name?” Y/N snaps. “Fuck, you want me to tell you the truth?” He glares, stepping to her. “Be honest and explain what happened?” “It would be start,” Y/N crosses her arms. “Fine, I never fucking loved you,” Michael exclaims Y/N’s body visibly shrinks back, shoulders slumping, eyes diverting to anywhere but his face. “I never cared about you, alright? I just, I saw you, thought you were hot, wanted to fuck, that was it.” Y/N looks at him, biting on her lip. “All that bullshit I told you about loving you, yeah, it was a lie, you’re right, okay?” He laughs out coldly. “I told you what any guy tells a girl to get in bed with them. I kept you around because you were a good fuck and knew I could fuck you whenever I wanted,” he rolls his eyes. “But you’re getting too attached, clearly,” Michael gestures, “so it’s time to end things.” Y/N stands, body trembling in place as she listens to Michael’s harsh words. Her face is elusive, trying to hide the evident pain Michael is bringing her. “You were nothing more than just a good fuck to pass the time,” Michael tells her. “That’s it. Now get out,” Michael adds, walking to his door and opening it up for her to leave. Y/N blinks, feeling a stabbing pang in her chest. This couldn’t actually be happening? Were these words actually leaving Michael’s mouth? Michael seemed to never have a mean bone in his body, not towards her at least. He had only ever been sweet and warm-hearted and gentle with her. From the very beginning. So he couldn’t be serious now; he was not seriously this cruel. She walks quietly over to him and his door. But stops in front of him, looking up at his face. He stares at her with a bored expression, seeming impatient. But his eyes give him away. She sees there’s something else there. A sadness, a guilt. He’s upset, she knows he is. She didn’t just spend the last year of her life with him and not learn how he works. She narrows her eyes. “You’re lying,” Y/N whispers. She clears his throat, “You’re lying. You’re not telling me the truth,” she turns more to him. Michael rolls his eyes, looking away and placing a hand on the door in annoyance. “I know you, I know how you work,” she starts, trying to keep her voice strong. “And you’re not telling the truth. I can tell you’re lying, I know you are,” Y/N says, voice betraying her and wavering. “There’s no way you would have wasted a year just so you could,” she pauses. “Just to get --” “I told you what you wanted to hear so I could fuck you,” he states harshly. “I got what I wanted, and yeah, I kept you around because you were easy then. Now I’m bored of it and you. That’s all there is to it.” His words hurt her, but she shakes her head, knowing he has to be lying. “You’re upset. Your eyes, your voice, you’re not ev--” “You don’t fucking know me,” Michael glares at her, snapping at her. “You fell for the first guy that gave you attention and got fucked over. Shit happens,” he repeats from earlier. “There’s no way any of this is true,” she shakes her head. “You were genuine, so sweet.. What we have is real.” “Had,” Michael corrects. “And, we never really had anything because it was never actually real.” “Bullshit,” Y/N states. “You don’t spill your heart over someone to that person and cry about loving them when you don’t actually have feelings for them. You bared your heart and soul to me, continuously,” she pleads. “It’s one of the reason’s why I love you.” Michael laughs a bit. “You’re a fucking idiot.” Y/N raises her eyes, taken aback by Michael’s reaction. She takes a step away from him, feeling like his words are actually hitting her in the chest, slapping her across the face, are pulling her down to be nothing. She doesn’t want to talk to him anymore now, not after the way he's treated her in the last few minutes. But she can’t help with looking back at him with some hope. His guilt-ridden face is more prominent, more sorrowful. She narrows her eyes, shaking her head. She hesitates but steps back to him, grabbing his face, looking up into his piercing blue eyes, trying to find any sense in them. “Tell me what’s going on. Tell me what’s happened?” Michael looks back at her with despair, eyes almost speaking back to her, almost telling her the real truth. But he swallows, composes himself and keeps a harsh look on his face. He grabs her wrists, pulling her hands from him. He leans in a bit. “I'll fucking ruin you,” he seethes. Y/N’s eyes water, his cold tone sending a shiver through her body. She shakes her head, “This isn’t you.” “You really are pathetic, aren’t you,” Michael laughs a bit humorlessly. “If I knew you were going to be this clingy, I would have wasted my time with someone else. I don’t know how else to tell you that I don’t fucking want you, I never did. Just get the fuck out, okay?” Michael snaps and pushes her outside the door before slamming it in her face. Y/N steps back, startled by the slam and blinks. Tears suddenly fall from her eyes, her breathing beginning to hyperventilate. Michael’s behavior was so unlike him, so cold, so different, she can’t believe the way he’s just acted towards her. She knew there was something else going on, a different reason why Michael was causing all this. But from his harsh tones and actions, maybe not, after all.

Michael leans the side of his head against the door, listening to Y/N. He can hear her breathing getting heavier, more shallow, and he knows she’s crying from the way she sniffs and sighs out. He listens until he hears the soft patter of her foot steps walking, fading away in the distance until ultimately hearing the shut of the front door.

Michael closes his eyes, breathing out with restraint, moving to lean his back against the door. He leans his head back, bringing his hands to his eyes, shaking his head, mumbling out a string of words until he screams out, “Fuck!”

Michael had gotten into some trouble recently, having been arrested for the murder of a butcher at the market when out with his caretaker, Miriam Mead. Some fucked up shit happened during the interrogation, and a supposed Warlock, Ariel, had come to get him to take him to Hawthorne’s school, a school for Warlocks, so he could gain control of his abilities and expand. The thing was, he was very aware of his abilities. He’d had this plan formed with Mead already to get the attention of the warlocks at the warlock school. This was just a beginning step in wanting to get the attention of Cordelia Fox, the Supreme witch of Robichaux's school for witches. If everything played out right, he would be able to overtake the witches, and begin his scheme of ending the world.

The only thing that wasn’t apart of his plan was Y/N.

He never expected to meet her in the first place, let alone fall in love with her for that matter. Michael didn’t realize how dangerous it could be for Y/N to get involved, so he ignored it until it was impossible to ignore anymore. Michael didn’t want her to get hurt, to be put at risk or to live a life surrounded by all this far-fetched type of stuff. The plans he had weren’t suitable for someone you love. He knew the only way to keep Y/N safe was to end things with her. And so this is what had to be done, though it was the hardest thing he would ever have to do.

He didn’t know that he’d eventually cross paths with her again. He hadn’t even come close to difficulty yet since he was unaware of the fact that he would see her again and would have to work overtime to gain her forgiveness and trust once the world had actually ended at his hand. But to him, it already seemed like the world had ended for him.

Do you think grrm could have based the targaryens on the aryan race? Their obsession with keeping their Valariyn blood pure, with being exceptional and special (superior = master race anyone ?). Their looks set them apart from the rest of westeros too, they're meant to have white hair (blonde hair) and violet eyes (blue eyes). They seem like a mix of colonizers and arryans the more deeply I think about them, a Targaryen restoration seems like the worst possible idea to me.

Why would you ask me, a Lannister blog? Me, a Lannister blog. Yet here I am hoisting the Targaryen banner; the things this fandom makes me do smh. Nobody’s even gonna read a post this long but I’m not doing this by halves.

So, GRRM has said that the Targaryens have an “obsession with the purity of their blood”. Let’s look at the text to get more details:

The tradition amongst the Targaryens had always been to marry kin to kin. Wedding brother to sister was thought to be ideal. Failing that, a girl might wed an uncle, a cousin, or a nephew; a boy, a cousin, aunt, or niece. This practice went back to Old Valyria, where it was common amongst many of the ancient families, particularly those who bred and rode dragons. “The blood of the dragon must remain pure,” the wisdom went.

The way the Old Valyrians maintained a “pure bloodline” was by marrying “kin to kin”. Marrying one Valyrian-blooded person to another Valyrian-blooded person was not enough in Old Valyria to keep the blood of the dragon “pure.”

What historical precedents could GRRM have been drawing on when he wrote that Targaryens “marry kin to kin”? Fortunately we don’t need to speculate, especially when speculation leads to … this anon. GRRM has told us that he based the Targaryens on the Ptolemaic dynasty, which ruled Egypt from 323BC to 30BC:

The Targaryens have heavily interbred, like the Ptolemys of Egypt. As any horse or dog breeder can tell you, interbreeding accentuates both flaws and virtues, and pushes a lineage toward the extremes. Also, there’s sometimes a fine line between madness and greatness. Daeron I, the boy king who led a war of conquest, and even the saintly Baelor I could also be considered “mad,” if seen in a different light. ((And I must confess, I love grey characters, and those who can be interpreted in many different ways. Both as a reader and a writer, I want complexity and subtlety in my fiction)) [SSM]

The Ptolemaic dynasty included Cleopatra, who married her brothers and whose parents were the products of incestuous unions to keep their Macedonian bloodline pure. Here is an interesting article comparing Daenerys and Cleopatra. Another fun article. (I am throwing this wish out into the void that I would like to see in-depth Dany-Cleopatra comparisons on my dash please.)

It’s interesting to me to read that the doylist reason GRRM chose to include interbreeding among Targaryens to accentuate “both flaws and virtues.” To me, GRRM has written ASOIAF as a story much larger than life, like the Paul Bunyan of fantasy, with impossibly large castles and impossibly vast geography and impossibly long seasons, an oversized place where GRRM’s characters do superhuman feats. GRRM’s characters have glaring flaws, but they also have glorious virtues to which I can only aspire. That’s the point tho. That’s one reason why we read: to see ourselves, only magnified.

Why do Targaryens have a tendency to interbreed and keep their Valyrian blood pure? GRRM says the Targaryens intermarried to avoid conflict. It’s a matter of common sense to avoid fights when giant fire-breathing lizards are involved, as the Dance of the Dragons illustrates.

The Targaryens are the extreme example of that policy [to reinforce the family’s bloodline]: they only marry within the family to keepthe purity of the blood, and that way you avoid the problem of having several candidates for thethrone or the rule of the family.

If you have a generation of five brothers and each of them hasseveral children (sons?), after two or three generations you could find yourself with thirtypotential heirs: there could be thirty people named Lannister or Frey, and that produces conflict,because all of them are going to get involved in hereditary fights for the throne.

That’s what originated the War of the Roses; An excess of candidates for the throne, all of themdescendants of Edward III. Laking an heir (like Henry VIII) is just as bad as having too many ofthem. If you have five sons and you want to avoid that kind of problem, maybe it’s not such abad idea to marry the firstborn girl of the oldest son with the third son (or with the firstborn of thethird son?), and that way you avoid fights and the bloodline remains united

Something to note about this SSM entry is that GRRM was discussing all this blood purity stuff in the context of Tywin. The asker was literally asking why Tywin married Joanna, and GRRM answered that it was a love match and to reinforce the Lannister bloodline. Now, why would GRRM jump to discussions of blood purity when Tywin Lannister comes up?? Why ever could that be??

I know why. If we’re looking for the family that was inspired by fascist ideology, we don’t need to look far.

This issue of blood purity is a way to maintain dynastic power in a feudal system.

Which is bad, in the sense that feudalism is inherently a bad system, especially in comparison to, say, democracy. Even Ned Stark’s benevolent feudalism is bad compared to democracy. Lemme say that again - Even Stark feudalism is bad.

There should be a populist revolution in Westeros and literally every noble should lose their aristocratic status and wealth and power, and all this wealth and power should be redistributed to the common people, and everyone in Westeros should be given equal rights and there should be free and open elections to choose democratic representatives.

But I suspect anon isn’t interested in TWOW detailing their fav aristos losing all their fancy jewels and samite, and I don’t think anon is making signs saying “Down with feudalism! Down with monarchy! Down with the aristocracy! Eat the rich!” Somehow I really don’t think that’s what this anon is campaigning for.

And how do real-world levels of income inequality influence income-inequality in fantasyland? These are questions I am interested in.)

Anyways.

If we accept feudalism as par for the course in medieval fantasyland, I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing that the nobility wants to maintain their dynastic power in a feudal system. It’s what they do with that power that’s important.

As the original asker of this SSM question pointed out, marriages are a way of maintaining power and building alliances in a feudal system, but such marriages also raise up the lesser House and make it more powerful

For example, I believe Lord Roger Reyne wanted to marry one of his sons to Genna Lannister to gain more power in the Westerlands, but was thwarted when Tytos betrothed Genna to Emmon Frey instead. Similarly, the previous Lord Reyne, Lord Robert Reyne, arranged a marriage between his daughter Ellyn Reyne and Gerold’s heir Tywald Lannister. The Reynes wanted more power and influence in the west, perhaps even to go so far as to topple House Lannister and become the dominant House in the West.

The Targaryens face a similar problem, on a much larger scale. Whatever House they marry into, it raises that House up and grants them considerable power, potentially creating a disequilibrium point in the game of thrones and causing more innocents to suffer. (…honestly why do you think Tywin wanted his daughter to be queen?)

This is why the Targaryens (and all the nobles really) need to consider their marriages (or even mistresses) very carefully. If you choose your partner poorly, without concern for dynastic politics, it could throw the land into chaos. (See: Tytos Lannister, Rhaegar Targaryen, Duncan the Small, etc)

So, who are the Targaryens marrying? Because anon seems to be making the assumption that the Targs don’t marry outside their bloodline in any significant numbers, and I intend to challenge that assumption.

The Targaryens certainly do have a tendency to intermarry, as we see in The Sworn Sword:

Egg spoke as if such incest was the most natural thing in the world. For him it is. The Targaryens had been marrying brother to sister for hundreds of years, to keep the blood of the dragon pure. Though the last actual dragon had died before Dunk was born, the dragonkings went on. Maybe the gods don’t mind them marrying their sisters.

“The Targaryens had been marrying brother to sister for hundreds of years, to keep the blood of the dragon pure.” And yet, despite Dunk’s observation, the Targaryens have been marrying outside of House Targaryen for hundreds of years as well, suggesting to me that dynastic politics rather than blood purity is their greatest concern.

I will attempt to compile a list of people who are not of Valyrian descent who married a member of House Targaryen. I have not read Fire and Blood yet, so I hope that someone will let me know if I’ve forgotten anyone and I will edit this post to include them (I do not mind spoilers). I think it’s also important to note that there are various Targaryens who wanted relationships outside of House Targaryen, but who couldn’t marry outside their House / couldn’t marry who they wanted, for various reasons. For example, Aerys and Rhaella did not want an incestuous marriage.

Let’s break that down:

~pure dragon blood~ relationships = 19/58 = 32.8%

~impure~ relationships = 39/58 = 67.2%

Roughly two-thirds of known Targaryen relationships do not keep the blood of the dragon “pure” by the book definition of blood purity.

If you wish to break the ~impure~ relationships down further:

Targ*Valyrian-blooded relationships = 12/58 = 20.7%

Targ*non-Valyrian-blooded relationships = 27/58 = 46.6%

At the very minimum, at least 46% of Targ relationships were not motivated by blood purity reasons. Note, I think this number is too low, because like Queen Victoria “the grandmother of Europe” and her descendants, the nobility tend to intermarry a lot (because of classism). People like Aemma Arryn have valyrian blood because everyone is intermarrying.

I will say again, roughly two-thirds of known Targaryen relationships do not keep the blood of the dragon “pure” by the book definition.

Targaryens intermingled with the people of Westeros, they didn’t keep their blood “pure”. This is a very different attitude from, say, the 20th century anti-miscegenation laws that made it illegal for people of different races to have sex.

I already pointed out above how GRRM has said these incestuous unions were motivated at least in part by dynastic politics. Could there be any other reasons?

Why did the valyrians before the Doom all practice incest? The “blood of the dragon” is not just about valyrians marrying valyrians, although that’s how anon is trying to spin it. The text specifically says that maintaining “the blood of the dragon” is about marrying “kin to kin.”

We do not yet know why the valyrians practiced incest. Why is it important that “the blood of the dragon must remain pure”? It has not yet been explained. But there are theories. @nobodysuspectsthebutterfly has already addressed this issue, so I will refer you to her posts: 1, 2 and her entire tag for #the blood of the dragon.

I don’t know, but we’re definitely not reading books with magic. We’re definitely not reading books with blood magic. We’re definitely not reading books with giant magical fire-breathing lizards. We definitely don’t need easy ways to control those lizards. Definitely not.

I mean, we still don’t know exactly what “the blood of the dragon” means but I think what GRRM wrote with House Targaryen’s incestuous ~blood purity~ is something different from Aryanism.

Which isn’t to say that all this blood purity bullshit GRRM wrote shouldn’t be criticized. Placing importance on the ~purity~ of someone’s blood in any context is … not a good look. GRRM has been kinda playing this trope straight so far, but I am hoping he smashes it in future books; Tyrion is eager to ride a dragon, and A plus J does not equal T.

This blood purity bullshit is bad, I actually agree with anon on that. But I’m not sure why that means we should condemn the entirety of House Targaryen.

Like, from Fire and Blood, Jaehaerys I and Alysanne Targaryen are one of those Targ*Targ marriages that I admit help reinforce Targ blood purity. But this marriage was how Alysanne exercised her own bodily autonomy, by marrying who she wanted, because she and Jaehaerys had their dragons and no one was able to stop them. But anon … anon gonna call that Aryanism …

Anyways. I want to move on to anon’s other claims, but first I think it might be useful to define Aryanism, since anon seems to think it is about marrying brother to sister, which it is not.

Aryanism grew out of 19th century fascist ideologies. The term Aryan is related to the root -arya which is related to a Sanskrit word meaning “honorable, respectable, noble.” In the mid- to late-1800s, the term “Aryan race” was coopted by racists to justify their repellant “scientific racism” that claimed that “blond” Germanic / Nordic / Northern European people were a “superior race.” Note that “blond” is specifically mentioned by these ~scientists~ espousing their racist ideology. They claimed that “Aryans” were “natural leaders, destined to rule over” the other races. According to Jackson Spielvogel, Hitler described the Slavic peoples as “a mass of born slaves who feel the need of a master.” Himmler said, “whether nations live in prosperity or starve to death interests me only insofar as we need them as slaves for our culture. Otherwise it is of no interest.”

Anon was correct that racial superiority is a characteristic of Aryanism.

But do the Targaryens consider themselves to be a superior race to the other peoples of Westeros, or other peoples in general?

GRRM says he wanted the Targaryens to be “a race apart”:

Speaking of Valyria… right from the start I wanted the Targaryens, and by extension the Valryians from whom they were descended, to be a race apart, with distinctive features that set them apart from the rest of Westeros, and helped explain their obsession with the purity of their blood. To do this, I made a conventional ‘high fantasy’ choice, and gave them silver-gold hair, purple and violet eyes, fine chiseled aristocratic features. That worked well enough, at least in the books (on the show, less so).

But in recent years, it has occured to me from time to time that it might have made for an interesting twist if instead I had made the dragonlords of Valyria… and therefore the Targaryens… black. Maybe I could have kept the silver hair too, though… no, that comes too close to 'dark elf’ territory, but still… if I’d had dark-skinned dragonlords invade and conquer and dominate a largely white Westeros… though that choice would have brought its own perils. The Targaryens have not all been heroic, after all… some of them have been monsters, madmen, so…

Well, it’s all moot. The idea came to me about twenty years too late.

What does it mean to be “a race apart”? Does “apart” automatically mean superior? To me, “apart” here means different or distinct. But does that mean “superior”?

I’ve already addressed the fact that Targaryens are on average twice as likely to marry someone outside their House than to marry a Targaryen, so I don’t think the incest can be used to say the House as a whole claims superiority.

There are certainly some Targaryens who view themselves as racially superior. Aerys Targaryen comes to mind; he said of his newborn granddaughter that she “smells dornish.” The Blackfyre cause is certainly racist (for example, Team Blackfyre did not like it that their ~precious white princess~ Daenerys Targaryen, was married to Maron Martell). There are many other Targaryens who were racist. But racism isn’t exclusive to members of House Targaryen. Many nobles in Westeros are racist: Joffrey, Cersei, Tywin - but we were talking about House Targaryen.

What of Daeron Targaryen, who married a Dornish princess, who surrounded himself with Dornishmen and women and artists and intellectuals, and he wanted to include all these people at his court? I don’t know where the textual evidence is that King Daeron adopted an attitude of racial superiority.

What of Maegelle Targaryen? Would you truly accuse her of an attitude of superiority? Maegelle was a septa who nursed children with greyscale, until she herself caught greyscale and died.

When Aegon the Conqueror became high king, he adopted some Westerosi customs to assimilate. For example,

Heraldic banners had long been a tradition amongst the lords of Westeros, but such had never been used by the dragonlords of old Valyria. When Aegon’s knights unfurled his great silken battle standard, with a red three-headed dragon breathing fire upon a black field, the lords took it for a sign that he was now truly one of them, a worthy high king for Westeros.

Aegon the Conqueror literally wanted to join with the Westerosi nobles and become one of them. Compare this to Tywin, who disparages nobles from another continent as nothing but "spice soldiers and cheese lords”. So who has the superior attitude?

And what of Daenerys Targaryen? Dany embraces the Dothraki customs of her husband. (Contrast this with how her brother Viserys belittles the Dothraki.) Daenerys befriends orphans, former prostitutes, former slaves, people of many different races. I don’t think Daenerys adopts an attitude of racial superiority. (It’s true that GRRM does fall into some racist tropes when he writes ASOIAF, but I don’t think this means that Daenerys supports Aryanism, or that GRRM was inspired by white supremacy when he first imagined Daenerys. (Like, srsly, wtf??) Daemon Blackfyre I can definitely see being inspired by white supremacist movements in the real world, but Daenerys?)

Anon accuses the Targaryens of being “exceptional and special”. idk I thought controlling dragons was special. Kinda like controlling direwolves is special. Controlling magical creatures is special. But I didn’t think controlling magical creatures made you a fascist or a supporter of Aryanism.

If you want to make the case for a group of white people in ASOIAF posing as ~the master race~, I would actually suggest the valyrians of Old Valyria. The sorcerer-princes of Old Valyria captured and enslaved people and used people to fuel their magical empire. The attitude of Old Valyria actually seems very similar to that Himmler quote I gave you above: “whether nations live in prosperity or starve to death interests me only insofar as we need them as slaves for our culture. Otherwise it is of no interest.” The dragonlords of Old Valyria definitely colonized other places and practiced imperialism.

But the Targaryens were like the hillbillies of Old Valyria. They weren’t very powerful. Shortly before the Doom they relocated to a rock in the middle of nowhere on the edge of the Valyrian empire, and then the Doom and the Century of Blood meant suddenly the Targs were on top by accident (and a really smart woman). It’s like an episode of The Dukes of Hazzard or The Beverly Hillbillies, and this is why Tywin and his ancestors before him were so fucking pissed, because who the fuck even is this hillbilly targ family with their ~dRAgoNs~ and their ~InCeSt~ that’s ~bEtTeR~ than our ~LAnNiCeSt~ and ~~~We were kings in Casterly Rock for thousands of years, so who the fuck are these hicks~~~

Anon mentions the characteristic silver-gold hair and purple eyes of House Targaryen. GRRM explains that he “made a conventional 'high fantasy’ choice, and gave them silver-gold hair, purple and violet eyes, fine chiseled aristocratic features.”

Is there racism in conventional high fantasy? Yeah.

Does ASOIAF have racist writing? Yeah.

Is GRRM playing some of those racist tropes straight instead of subverting them? Yeah.

Could GRRM do better? Yeah. GRRM himself thinks he might have made the Targaryens dark-skinned.

Despite GRRM’s racist writing, I don’t think this means that the Targaryens as GRRM wrote them are all, without exception, terrible people.

I would also like to point out that House Targaryen exhibits a variety of phenotypes. They are not all the same, they’re not all blond and fair and ~Nordic looking~. Here is a partial list of Targaryens without the traditional look. If someone has statistics on the percentage of Targs without Valyrian features, I would appreciate a link, but I’m math’d out right now.

Speaking broadly, House Targaryen has certainly done some terrible things. For example, I think the Targaryen conquest of Dorne was imperialistic. Many people have already addressed imperialism in ASOIAF in detail, so I will refer you to this tag.

Was Aegon’s Conquest of Westeros a good thing, or a bad thing? I don’t know. Truly I don’t know - there is good and bad both in what Aegon the Conqueror did.

GRRM says this about him:

“Aegon finally decided to take over Westeros, and unify the Seven Kingdoms (that existed at the time) under a single rule. There is a lot of speculation that, in some sense, he saw what was coming 300 years later, and wanted to unify the Seven Kingdoms to be better prepared for the threat that he eventually saw coming from the North – the threat that we’re dealing with in A Song of Ice and Fire.”

Individually, some Targaryens were certainly awful. Others were good and kind. Some of them were mediocre. I think we should evaluate these characters individually, instead of condemning an entire family. I think that is what GRRM is trying to get us to do, judge each character individually based on their crimes and/or their heroism.

Anon thinks the worst possible thing that could happen to Westeros is that Dany becomes queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

That’s “the worst possible idea” of what could happen.

The Others could win the War for the Dawn and enslave/murder every single living creature on Terros. That’s a distinct possibility.

But anon would rather have every single person on Terros die than for Dany to become queen of the Seven Kingdoms?

And people say this fandom isn’t misogynistic.

I really don’t think it would be a bad thing for a person as compassionate as Daenerys Targaryen to become queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

Westeros could certainly do worse than Dany. The Lannisters could stay in power, for example.

Cuz you know which family is repeatedly described as blond and fair and there is a LOT of uniformity in their appearance? Which family didn’t want to marry a Dornish girl? Which family described the Westerlings as “doubtful blood” and wouldn’t marry them? Which family had a common girl gang raped because the heir married her? Cuz it sure wasn’t Aegon V’s family.

Who said Lannisters are “worth more” than other people? Who captured and enslaved people at Harrenhal while burning their lands?

Tywin Lannister did that. GRRM ain’t exactly subtle about pointing out the fascist. It’s Tywin and Randyll and people like them who are the fascist who support Aryanism.

Daenerys is repeatedly in direct opposition to Tywin’s philosophies. Daenerys is one of the heroes. She’s a complex, well-written hero. She flirts with darkness but ultimately rejects it. She’s a grey, complicated hero.

This fandom doesn’t deserve Dany, but she’s gonna save the world anyway.

Earning the Happily Ever After: Star’s Season 4 Arc Prediction (with a primer analysis for Seasons 1-3)

Time to break in my blog with my very own speculation post. This is going to be a very general but also very far-reaching take on the final arc of the show for Star, based on what I know about the show thus far and the tiny bit of detail we got at SDCC. I’ll be doing overviews on Star’s arcs and how the show always ties in the personal growth she’s undergoing to her relationship with the kingdom and her relationship with Marco. Finally I’ll try to piece together how things, on a broader level, might go down for our rebel princess and karate boy in what is almost certainly the last 21 episodes of the show.

The bulk of this post breaks down the past 3 seasons. There will almost certainly be redundancy with other posts people have written for Tumblr or elsewhere, and I don’t claim any of it is brand new information. I still do hope you give it a chance as it ties everything together in a way geared towards providing context for my Season 4 assertions, but if you are so inclined to skip ahead, simply search for “Season 4” and jump to the next instance after this paragraph (or even “TL;DR” for the fully abbreviated experience). There will be a recap of the critical context included.

So let’s begin breaking down Star’s primary arc season by season. Obviously character growth is fluid and you can’t pin down individual moments as the moment a character flaw was “fixed,” but there’s still some discernible changes to extract here. Each season’s title is her major obstacle during the season and the aspect of maturity she gains as a result of her growth.

Season 1 – Innocence/Awareness

Star’s defining trait of season 1 was being carefree to a fault. She uses her magic for whimsy and doesn’t really heed the consequences. It was the reason she was sent to Earth, after all!

Similarly, her initial crush on Earth is based entirely on literal flights of fancy.

As the season goes on, Star gets her first tastes of the seriousness of the real world and culminates in her first major confrontation with it. It’s almost poetic that Blood Moon Ball, where Star and Marco’s relationship gets the first real hit of emotional depth, is paired with the segment which introduces us to the first serious threat in Star’s life.

She’s still not the most mature about it and is still scared to death or outright ignorant of the complexities in the world for a while,

but still makes some initial steps forward in her character.

The season concludes with Storm the Castle, a turning point where she has to tackle a major decision with serious consequences head-on. Is it any surprise that this involves both her relationship to the kingdom and Marco? By this point I should hope it isn’t.

Season 2 – Avoidance/Determination

So after Storm the Castle, Star had passed a point of no return. She was officially aware that the world is a complex place, that it’s not always going to be fun and games and rainbows and unicorns. Most of this season is about Star realizing that she can’t just sweep them under the rug and hope everything gets better on its own.

The season opens with both the results of plot seriousness and relationship seriousness affecting Star’s life, because of course it does.

Fetch, an episode most notable for appearing in lists of reasons why people don’t like season 2A, actually delivers one of the most direct character arc expositions in the show.

Let’s throw in By the Book, a segment entirely focused on her desire to just brush off magic training, just for fun.

And Sleepover is where it first becomes painfully obvious that she has romantic feelings for Marco,

but it’s clear from her diary in My New Wand (and especially now that the SDCC panel blessed us with the full “My Thoughts on Marco” chapter) that she’s been lingering on them and trying to avoid them since the beginning of the season, just like her other problems.

Star’s denial ran deeper than the actual Nile. Moving on.

Then we have Bonbon. Hey, what do you know? A pivotal episode in Star’s character growth which includes and connects both her relationship to plot and her relationship with Marco!

“I lost everything.” …mere minutes after feeling like she was losing Marco. Hell, even seconds if you count the moment he and Jackie had right after the green vortex closed. Clearly the line is consciously about her book and mentor, which are very important to her, but obvious subtext is obvious.

There aren’t really any major turning points during season 2B until the finale. In Face the Music, Star uses Song Day to open up to the world because she knows hiding things for too long isn’t right, which (with a bit of “help” from Fallout Boy) spurs her to apply that to her love life in Starcrushed. Star exposing her bottled-up princess secrets to the world and her bottled-up feelings to Marco both happening in a finale? Egad, I dare say this seems to be a pattern! Let’s pretend like this is surprising.

Battle for Mewni is a bit of an edge case, as it is sort of separate from the Season 2 arcs while also being the resolution to them. Suffice to say that while the “official” character arc in Season 2 of hiding or running from her problems was “solved” within the official boundaries of Season 2, it took BFM to have her actually tackle the immediate danger posed by it.

And she’s fully owning up to her feelings for Marco to boot.

Season 3 – Idealistic Hastiness/Wisdom

I struggled more coming up with a single term to best address my take on this season’s arc, especially because it seems (to me, at least) that Star’s plot arc this season is split a bit more heavily by midseason than in Season 2. To elaborate on my choice of “Idealistic Hastiness”, I’m referring to her finding problems that she needs to solve and taking what seems like an easy solution – unlike in Season 2, when she may have tried to apply bandaids to cover up the problems, in Season 3 she is genuinely interested in solving them but jumps the gun and struggles with what seems like the “easy/obvious/right thing to do” not actually working.

I may abbreviate some details here, since I already helped Seddm construct the post to end all posts about this particular season, so please consult that for any further examples and supporting evidence about the meanings of Star’s words and actions especially in the relationship arc.

As the main part of Season 3 opens, we have Star identifying problems in her life and wanting solutions to them. In the case of Marco, it’s her unrequited feelings driving her insane.

In the case of the plot, it’s initially a vague desire to “be a better princess” which later takes a few coherent forms.

And Star isn’t totally clueless about her relationships, she knows she needs support and that her life is too chaotic to throw herself into a committed romance.

But the heart is a tricky thing, and a genuine emotional connection with someone she has some attraction to (plus a lingering heartache from Marco) leads to a romantic relationship with Tom. Suffice to say, that turns out to have the exact problem Star herself prophesied! She largely ignores Tom and isn’t willing to commit to their relationship (for a host of reasons, most of which involve Marco). And Tom isn’t a stellar supportive boyfriend either, but this post isn’t about that. Simply put, the emotional connection between them over their mutual struggles to improve is real, but it’s gone about in a very suboptimal way that they think is the correct one – Idealistic Hastiness at work.

For Marco, a similar dissonance between what she says and what happens are two different things. Lint Catcher has the wedding squire vows, in which Star basically outlines the importance Marco has in her life in a flashy ceremonial manner

followed by a nearly immediate 180 in Trial by Squire.

She did, to some degree, believe that the current situation was ideal, with Tom as her boyfriend going through a similar phase of self-improvement while Marco was still her very close friend to hang out with and help her. As everyone knows, Star ends up turning to Marco for virtually anything except for handholding and smooches from now until the end of the season, because of that dang ole’ rushed solution to her problems that didn’t really match what she wanted or needed.

Star knows she wants to help Mewni, but decides that the best way to go about it is throwing herself into a “princess” mold. Star knows she wants Marco by her side, but decides the best way to go about it is throwing him into a “squire” box.

Interesting.

Now on to the plot side of things: we’ve got a lot going on here, so I’ll be briefer with each section, since none of them are all that subtle. Her encounter with Eclipsa in Stranger Danger is the first attempt at “being a better princess,” when she seeks to right the kingdom’s unfair treatment of Eclipsa. Her approach is respectably even-handed too, since she maintains a healthy skepticism of Eclipsa’s motives and isn’t jumping the gun too much.

There’s also the curious case of the sleeping portals. Once again, Star confronts the problem, but taking Eclipsa’s advice to just let herself go and see what happens almost gets her hunted down by Hekapoo. It takes Marco’s secret assistance in Night Life and their final expedition in Deep Dive to stop the portaling. The Realm of Magic is a whole separate issue, one which the show hasn’t fully covered, so I can’t clearly say she “solved” that. But the immediate problem at hand was actually more or less solved for real, so this is sort of a sped-up microcosm of Star’s character arc.

You all deserve a breather, so have a wholesome bug hug.

And finally, we have the issue of monster rights. This kickstarts in Starfari where Star explores the injustices against monsterkind on Mewni: Moon is unhelpful, Jelly Goodwell is a nutjob, and Star’s takeaway from it is to appoint Buff Frog to an ambassador role of sorts. A noble and well-intentioned idea with some actual thought put into it, but one which doesn’t really address the roots of the issue (as we’ll see when it eventually fails in Is Another Mystery).

Monster Bash (and the treaty in Death Peck) are similar cases where Star thinks that channeling her passion and drive will make everything work, but it doesn’t – hard work and idealism aren’t always enough to get the job done, and can’t quite combat centuries of ingrained prejudices.

This is sort of a turning point where all her rushjobs start to collapse on her head. If you somehow don’t believe me that this is the crux of all of her problems now, let the show itself tell you even more directly than in Fetch.

She finds out the injustice against Eclipsa is so much bigger than she could have imagined, Buff Frog leaves Mewni, Booth Buddies floors her with the revelation that their friendship/princess-squire relationship isn’t perfect like she thought it was, and she even finds out her birthright to the throne isn’t even legitimate! And in each and every case her next step is to say, essentially, “Well clearly my initial, rushed approach didn’t work. What now?” And that question doesn’t get thoroughly answered within season 3 in every case, but we can identify some key progress made.

Monster rights is one where not much happens, but we get a hint in Is Another Mystery about it becoming more relevant in the future. She’s learned her lesson with rushing in this specific case already, so Star should have a better head on her shoulders to try and make things right in the future.

Marco makes his return in Divide after being mildly absent to make way for the 20 billion other things crammed into 3B. Although stuff like Moon going missing has kept Star from dwelling on her feelings for Marco or Tom, she’s wearing her heart on her cheeks (in a different way than usual)

…and again in Conquer, where those feelings manifest as soul-crushing despair with his balloonifying (much like that which Star was feeling with monster rights, with her mom being gone, and with Meteora) and sheer joy when he returns.

It’s clear that her feelings for Marco are back in full, without any trepidation, and the only thing she needs is a moment to think about it when her or her loved ones’ lives aren’t in imminent danger.

At the tail end of Conquer, the whole issue with Eclipsa and her lineage comes to a head when she gives up the wand. Star sees herself as finally righting the wrong of how Eclipsa was treated – while it’s not entirely certain, however, it seems like she only really thinks she’s giving up the wand.

Eclipsa getting her daughter back and going to find her husband came as a surprise with potentially ominous consequences. And that’s where Star ends the season.

I’ll save the recap for those who opted to skip this whole shebang. So with that, let’s jump into the final section.

Season 4 – Inexperience/Efficacy and Stability

Hello everyone just joining us from your app or browser’s “find in page” option, welcome to this post. You missed a bug hug, shame on you. I’m opening this with a recap of Star’s character at the end of season 3:

She has failed at bringing monster equality to Mewni, but understands the flaws in her efforts before and should have a much better mindset to bring about the proper change. Her feelings for Marco are 100% back and stronger than ever, simply awaiting a calm moment to reflect on them, and she rectified the injustice of the throne by giving up the wand to Eclipsa (with foreboding implications).

This was all the info we had until a certain SDCC clip from season 4 was revealed just a few days ago. I’ll be truly brazen for the first time in this post and unshackle myself from the hilariously short chain binding my analysis to already-aired canon. I believe this two minute clip gives us most of the information we need to predict Star’s broad character arc for the rest of the show, and this is my explanation and attempt at justification for my theory.

Clearly there’s a ton of context we don’t have yet, but there is some concrete information present in the clip. Moon is still missing, which is expected and obviously a very important plot point but not directly tied in to Star’s individual character arc (that we know of). Eclipsa being queen, on the other hand, is massive. We don’t exactly know the details, but one way or another, this prison torturer and his prisoner both accept that their ruler is Eclipsa right now. Star is still called a princess by the torturer, so it doesn’t necessarily seem like she’s been disowned, but she’s not actively in charge. And while many people thought Star would be queen for a large part of the season (myself included), it potentially makes a lot more sense for her own personal growth that she isn’t.

All three past seasons, and her three arcs have essentially been Star maturing on her path to being ready for the throne. Star’s far from perfect, but the fundamental flaws in her attitude about her role have mostly been covered. She knows what the problems are, is genuinely dedicated to fixing them, and has (or is prepared to have) a healthier and more patient mindset in tackling them now. If she became Queen… what exactly would there be left? SVTFOE is a heavily character-driven show, where plot doesn’t just drop from the sky and push the characters around and arbitrarily force character growth. The wand cleaving, Toffee/Ludo taking power in BFM, and Eclipsa getting the wand (and likely the throne) are all consequences, in large part, of Star’s actions.

If even a wandless Star was put in power, there’s nothing that stands out about her mindset that would lend itself to a season’s worth of impeding monster equality. If Star had the awareness, determination, wisdom, and efficacy to achieve her goals, the only things stopping her from “ruling Mewni her way” would be the passage of time, bureaucratic red tape, or enemies appearing out of thin air - none of which fit the show’s focus on character-driven plot. Even when she was the recognized legitimate princess trying to change the system from inside, it wasn’t all that effective, so one could argue she never really had the power to enact lasting change anyway.

(As a slight aside, Eclipsa being in power presents a lot of cool opportunities for Star and for the show – Eclipsa spent most of the season as a sketchy character, but one who was consistently pitted against the obviously unfair “system”. Neither the audience nor Star has actually gotten to see her in a vacuum, and a lot of neat plotlines could happen off of that.)

Technically we haven’t seen it in action yet in season 4, but even when Eclipsa officially gets the throne, I should hope it’s fairly obvious that Star is still going to want to act for the betterment of Mewni. Is Another Mystery and Conquer had strong moments of Star asserting her desire to protect monster rights and the people of Mewni in general, despite her already knowing she wasn’t a blood relative of the original Butterflies. So essentially, when the labels defining Star’s role on Mewni are broken down, she still takes all of this on as a personal choice, because it’s what her heart is telling her is right. Remember that last sentence.

I can’t call anything about specifics, but my conclusion here is that Star’s character arc for the final season is essentially using all of the growth she’s had thus far to rise up to the challenge and truly earn her destiny (figuratively and now quite literally). Plot would be much less driven by Star consistently screwing up on a fundamental level, and more about tackling the remaining consequences of her past screwups and learning through experience how to truly “rule Mewni her own way”. Just because I say she has largely matured doesn’t mean she’s perfect - simply having the maturity required for a good ruler doesn’t automatically qualify Star as a “finished” character, because her endgame as Queen must have some authority and permanence to it. Even if Star was in power now, we’d need to see her maturity actually take effect to confirm when the curtains close on this show forever that a “happily ever after” is in place (and having her not in power, at least temporarily, gives way more weight to the consequences of Star’s past actions and allows for more conflict). And if she’s constantly making things worse via her own personal flaws until episode 18, there’s no way she can actually achieve that happy ending.

If you know anything about me by now, you should know what topic is coming next. As I hopefully have established about 66.7 times throughout this piece, Star’s character arc always applies across all of her relationships and interactions in sync, so how does Marco fit in? Star has essentially gained all the internal maturity needed to start the process of becoming an effective ruler. At the same time, she’s essentially gained all the understanding of her own feelings, gone through ups and downs and knows in her heart that Marco is the one she wants as a partner in life and in love. I said above that all she needs is a moment to contemplate it to become fully conscious of her feelings (which would then result very quickly in the Tomstar breakup and a Starco talk). And guess what?

It’s already almost certain that the clip is from very early in the season (otherwise it’d spoil too much context) but there’s even some possible evidence it’s from the first episode of the season. Couple that with the previous importance of the Beach Day photo and you have a recipe for Star’s full realization happening very early on.(Additionally – and this is just my own pure speculation, so take it with a grain of salt – while we can’t say for sure the SDCC clip is from the beginning of a segment, we can also almost guarantee it’s not at the end of it from the general context of the clip. And it would be highly uncharacteristic for the show to linger on an important moment/symbol earlier on in a segment without having that be relevant to the segment itself, which gives me strong impressions that this segment may actually be where something important happens for Starco.)

Need more evidence stacked up for the immediate future of Starco? Like I said earlier, Star’s attachment to the “princess” label as a genuine attempt to help Mewni mirrors her attachment to Marco’s “squire” label as a genuine attempt to have him as a life partner. And that princess label got broken down, but she still did - and will almost certainly continue to - fight for bettering the kingdom. Is it so wrong to guess that, since the “squire” label (and even, to an extent, the entire concept of their relationship as purely platonic) clearly were nuked immediately following the kiss, Star will similarly open the season accepting Marco fully as her life partner without restraint? I don’t think it is, and therefore will claim that Star and Marco will start the season accepting their romantic feelings for each other (and the change in their relationship as a result) just as Star is doing for her role in the kingdom. Maybe they don’t call it “dating” until a handful of episodes later, but any hesitancy in figuring out and tackling the fact that she loves Marco for more than an individual segment focused on it would betray all the growth she’s gone through, just like being hesitant to continue striving to help Mewni would betray her growth. When the labels defining Star’s role on Mewni relationship with Marco are broken down, she still takes all of this on as a personal choice, because it’s what her heart is telling her is right.

Jumping to the endgame now - just like that maturity isn’t enough for Star’s queenly endgame, this isn’t enough for Starco’s endgame either. Star’s almost certain future as Queen of Mewni is a serious thing, and a serious commitment for Marco to make even if they have feelings for each other/are dating. Once again, a mirror to her princess arc can be found – if they keep screwing stuff up in the fundamental nature of relationship with their own flaws and doubts, there’s no way to dig out of that hole cleanly for that happy ending, so it’s gotta start sooner rather than later. Plus we already know that Marco’s arc is essentially coming out of his shell and finding his place in life (read the Seddm masterpost for way more in-depth info on that), so it’s apparent that a rock-solid endgame for Starco requires clarity that the two of them are prepared for everything a permanent romantic relationship means. In essence, we need to see the growth that lead to their mutual feelings applied practically, just like we need to see that for Star’s role within Mewni.

TL;DR Star’s season 4 arc will focus on applying her awareness, determination, and wisdom gained from the past 3 seasons to tackle the consequences of her past decisions, starting from a point of making the personal choice to embrace both her desire to help Mewni and her love for Marco, and through this she will both earn her place as permanent and effective ruler of Mewni, and develop her relationship with Marco into one that will confidently last forever. She’s gonna damn well earn that happily ever after.

There’s certainly a level of speculation to all of this, of course, but I have confidence in the requirements for endgame, so the general path seems clear enough to me. Naysayers on any side of the shipping war make claims that Star and Marco won’t get together for a long time, that the feelings are still uncertain, maybe that they’re not even endgame at all. If you’re a Starco fan that thinks this, then it’s likely that the whiplash of 3A was like a bad breakup that makes you never want to date again. I feel you, I really do, but it had its purpose. Don’t get yourself down that Starco is all a bait just because it didn’t happen one particular time that Star said Marco looked cute. As for anyone else, first off, thanks for sticking around this far! I honestly didn’t expect that! This post doesn’t attempt to shoulder the ambitious burden of convincing you why Starco is good on a philosophical level (my brutally honest response is “fix your eyeballs and earholes and watch the fucking show”), but at the very least I hoped I’ve made a strong claim for all of the connections in the past three seasons and how it will tie together in the fourth and final season of this show.

New Look Sabres: Preseason GM 6 - PIT

Well the useless games are over now. I suppose as Sabres fans we can be sure there will be some of those in March if not February if you know what I mean. Gee, why am I so cynical already? We’re all kinda just enthused the regular season is just about here. Just barely enthused; that’s the common feeling here, eh? I do want to say though that we have to be careful getting a head start shitting on Ralph Krueger. He’s not going to publicly talk down to guys who we all know are ass just because he knows we think they’re ass. You do want a functional organization, right? One of the pieces of that is having a coaching staff and Front Office that acts professional and doesn’t burn bridges and discourage players they need to perform. For such a manly man sport we’re supposed to think Hockey is its very motivationally based. The Sabres weren’t as bad as two wins in the entire month of March last season. I mean obviously they weren’t. They lost the will to keep fighting in a playoff race they were close in until February, when their GM failed to instill confidence by way of sounding completely unaware of the Coach not knowing what he was doing. Now you may ask me: Andrew, doesn’t a professional organization act diplomatically like you said? Yes, good question you smart ass. With us hungry man-eating trolls circulating like vultures around every public statement you need to be diplomatic. Internally something was wrong last Spring and Botterill failed to address it in any meaningful way publicly or privately. It’s a motivation game and the B team we brought to Pittsburgh this afternoon was super motivated.

It’s a little unfair to call it entirely a B team. The defensive group was essentially the opening night lineup excluding the injured. Yeah, unfortunately Marco Scandella looks like he’ll stick around. He strengthened what was already a pretty ironclad case today unfortunately. Risto didn’t play but he’s gotten games this preseason so I’m not going to speculate again about some trade I wish so bad was imminent. Even with the Laine signing I just don’t have it in me to venture a scenario on that one. The first period was kinda fun. All these hungry boys stacked up pretty well against the Penguins A team. Ullmark stood tall. There weren’t too many awful defensive breakdowns. Casey Mittelstadt looked rather ok compared to what the last few games would have you believe. There was a moment where John Gilmour almost dangled himself a goal and for a moment, just a moment, I thought maybe Botts and Krueger are justified in dragging out some of the more obvious cuts this long. Then I remembered how short my subtractions list was in the offseason retrospective and gave it a rest. The game was on MSG, but the live feed was the Penguins broadcast on AT&T Sportsnet. Now I’ve already said I enjoy watching other team’s broadcasts but this Pens one was really harshing my mello when they started playing games with Henri Jokiharju’s name after an embellishment call. That’s dumb shit. My last name is Uttaro. I know what it’s like for someone to mess around with your surname. Just get it right. I’ll take RJ and Rob Ray stumbling over Scandinavian pronunciation every day of the week over actively making jokes about other people’s names. Fuck off.

The second period started off with a couple very good Ullmark saves. I have a bold prediction about him you’ve probably heard if you put up with me on twitter, but I’ll save that for the last preseason post on Monday “Training Camp Closes”. However this middle period is when the scoring opened up. It seemed like the game was a shootout long before extra time. The styles both these teams play is very similar. Obviously Pittsburgh has had a lot more success with it but hear me out here. The first Penguins goal was a shot from the blueline. Ullmark never saw it. The second Penguins goal was a shot from a wrap around play from the circle. Both these teams box you out in front of the net but maybe I’m overthinking this preseason game too much. Yeah, I’ll save the strategy for the regular season. After all, Marco Scandella scoring a toe drag slapshot to cut the lead in half makes no logical sense. Even he was surprise by that goal. By the time the third period was underway my wife had gotten home from a party and I just said forget it, I’m going to order some Chinese. I didn’t expect any scoring in the last ten minutes of the game, and it didn’t matter anyway. Well I was surprised by this team… pleasantly for once.

Remember how I talked about hockey being a motivation game earlier? Yeah, well the hungry boys and the… uh… shouldn’t be here anymore guys got real motivated in the third period. Zemgus Girgensons, Captain of the unnecessary returning players squad, got a fantastic pass from the Captain of the Hungry Boys John Gilmour. Somehow Girgensons found himself on a breakaway, one-on-one with Matt Murray. He tucked in 3-hole and the game was tied. So obviously I know very little from here on out. I was busy watching the Season Premiere of A Million Little Things. At the moment I’m writing this not only is there not full video highlights of this game but NHL.com’s ticker seems to indicate the game never happened. I don’t believe in many conspiracy theories but if there is some French accent evil hockey overlord pulling the strings of the marionette that is Gary Bettman it would want to erase the history of Sidney Crosby’s team losing the day after his number was retired across the Quebec Major Junior League. I’m not saying it’s true I’m just saying you don’t have proof it’s not. Hell, how do we not know this whole preseason has been just a simulation. Ralph Krueger is Agent Smith from the matrix; he’s praising Sobotka and shit just to fuck with us. Well anyway this game went to a scoreless overtime and into the shootout. Does the matrix have a sense of humor? Because there is some humor to Evgeni Malkin missing the net entirely on his shootout attempt while Kyle Okposo shot his on-target right after. Yeah, this can’t be the matrix because Tage Thompson was the guy who kept Buffalo alive after Kris Letang scored. That’s three matrix glitches in one game if you add it to the Scandella and Girgensons goals. Computers don’t make that many mistakes. Casey Mittelstadt ended up capping off a revenge game with a bank-hander past Murray to win it. And so the Sabres ended the preseason how it began: beating the Penguins beyond regulation.

The part of this game I listened to on the radio featured Rob Ray dropping some wisdom. He said the end of the preseason is fun for the guys who have roster spots but it’s not so happy for the ones who don’t. Simply by virtue of math and the roster spot limit there are several players who do not have a roster spot waiting for them. Training Camp is just about over, and I can’t imagine there is much evaluating left to do. A Ristolainen trade probably doesn’t happen and the Bills have a decent shot to make it close against the Patriots tomorrow. Sorry, I added that last one on just to make me feel a little bit better. Monday morning you get Training Camp Closes here on the blog. That’s not just a preseason wrap up it’s also full of predictions about the season. I’ll tease you a little bit: I’m not going hardcore optimist like I did last year. I felt vindicated in the first half by those predictions but got burned real hard in the back half. ok so inspired by this post I realized how Elise and Takumi are the most plot-relevant sibling from each families, and not only that: They represent an aspect of Corrin in both paths. Elise represent Corrin’s mindset as a royal, when Takumi represent the effects of Corrin’s actions as a sibling to his/her own family, which proves why Conquest is wrong . (while this IS an anti-Conquest post, this is NOT an anti-Nohr family post). These two have the most greatly different characterization in the two opposing routes, but their Birthright and Revelation self is still pretty similar.

Also, since after all I often breach into other topics when I speak, maybe this post will not free from that too. *sigh*

Spoiler for all three routes. Read at your own risk.

In Birthright, Elise is the only Nohrian royal who is in touch, or at least know how her own people fare, She went as disguising herself and mingling with her people because she CARES for them. That she keep that secret passage as a secret from her own family . Why? Because she knows her family is slaughtering their own people left and right! She is keeping that place as a secret as her way to protect her people! Because she knows Nohrian people does NOT trust their own royal! She is willing to listen why Corrin side with Hoshido. She does see how nuts Garon is. Why people want to take him down. Why it is necessary to kill him and install Xander as new ruler of Nohr. What does she do then? Lead Corrin to Garon! No, I am NOT happy she is dead in Birthright. But what makes me happy is her Birthright self is much more mature and wise than her Conquest self that is anything but a spoiled brat. Yeah, I know Revelation Elise too shows signs of maturity wisdom. I’ll talk about that later. Doesn’t change the fact I hate her bratty Conquest self.

Conquest Elise is really.... Bratty.I mean it. We did not see any sign of maturity from Conquest Elise. Instead, we see a brat with complete obliviousness to the world. Remember how clueless her was you went to suppress the rebellion here and there? And when you went to the Wind Tribe’s territory? And she shoo Sakura away in the banquet at Izumo? Oh my god. Where is the tolerance that Birthright!Elise have? Where is the wisdom that Revelation!Elise have? I didn’t see any of it from Conquest! Elise She is but a oblivious royal brat unaware of her surrounding and people. That’s it. You side with her, yet she have worse personality/characterization than in the path you oppose her family. Why? “She got better in the far ending of Conquest!” Don’t give me that. Why in the far ending. Why can’t you see her wisdom when you ARE PLAYING BESIDE HER?

Oh the other hand, Birthright!Takumi isn’t a saint either. But that’s too IS the point. You started with a half-filled/empty (depend of your perspective) glass of water. Will you empty the glass, or you refill it? That is the question faced when you met Takumi in both paths. He have both hope and despair by the time you met him again after chapter 6 in both paths.. Will you take despair away from him and give him hope? Or the opposite? He is a jerk, yes, but that’s for hiding his insecurity. Will you try to approach him because you CARE for him ? That you admit he is FAMILY? Or will you ignore, or even abuse, his emotional problems , because, of course he IS NOT FAMILY, HE IS ENEMY in the war? (read some of the list of Corrin’s emotional abuse to Takumi in Conquest path.... yikes.)

It is also worth mentioning that in both paths it is Leo who sent both Elise and Takumi to their demise, unintentionally. In Birthright he allow her (support her, even) and Corrin’s party to pass, after Elise explained why she agreed with Corrin. What if Leo himself went to assassinate Garon without passing Xander? Chapter 2 already shows he IS aware something is wrong with Garon. He could think of a better way to assassinate his dad without his brother noticing. If he did, Elise doesn’t have to face Xander and Garon with Corrin. And with Takumi... So simple. He just say they captured Sakura and that’s it. As simple as that.

Let’s compare the death scene of Elise and Takumi in Conquest path, shall we? You can say Elise throws herself into death by attempting to protect Corrin (some people say this for the justification Takumi’s hate for Corrin is irrational since Mikoto did this to her... smh, that’s not the only reason.He have the LONG list of reasons to hate Corrin, his hate is justified you know) , And Takumi, well you know his story. Their emotional and mental state.

When she is dying, Elise is PERFECTLY HAPPY and COMPLETELY SANE, HAPPY because she MANAGED to do what she have to do as a PRINCESS, A ROYAL, that is to MAKE HER PEOPLE’S LIFE BETTER EVEN IF SHE HAVE TO LET CORRIN KILL HER OWN DAD. She BELIEVES Corrin is indeed FAMILY EVEN IF S/HE SIDE WITH HOSHIDO. she MANAGED to tell Xander and Corrin that PEACE IS NOT AN ILLUSION. Her death leaves IMPACT to.. everyone.She died with HOPE. She represent the HOPE that is Birthright ending.

Takumi’s dying scene is just... Ugh. the complete opposite of Elise’s. he is an UTTER WRECK , UTTERLY BROKEN, COMPLETELY SAD AND INSANE because he FAILED to do what he have to do as an ELDER BROTHER, A FAMILY, that is to protect Sakura. He already lost Mikoto, now he lost Sakura. Those two are his only reason to live as they are the only one who give him genuine love he always yearned. He FAILED not only as an ELDER BROTHER, but also a a PRINCE to PROTECT HIS COUNTRY. His death is BRUSHED OFF by EVERYONE .He died with DESPAIR. He represent the DESPAIR that is Conquest ending.

However, as Fates often emphasizing the “greyness” of the plot, that neither Hoshido is complete good nor Nohr is completely evil, neither is Birthright!Elise is pure hope, nor is Conquest!Takumi is pure despair. Birthright!Elise’s despair is that she is aware Nohr is destroyed from the inside by royal family itself, the lack of trust of people and royal family, and her lack of power to change it. Conquest!Takumi’s hope is that he still hopes for Corrin to return, and his inability to truly give up on that speck of hope. And of course, in both paths, Corrin brushes off these impurities.... by...ehm, you know the plot itself.

As you can see, Elise is more of a representation of Corrin’s MINDSET as a ROYAL, when Takumi is more of a representative of Corrin’s EFFECT to his/her FAMILY in a PERSONAL level, and BOTH are IMPORTANT for Corrin.

Birthright!Elise have the mindset “I must make my people happy BECAUSE I AM ROYAL. I must KNOW how they do. And if it comes to it, I must sacrifice myself for them. If siding with Hoshido leads to peace, so be it.” when Conquest Elise is like “What? The peasants? Who cares! I’m ROYAL. Let the older siblings decimate them! It’s their own fault to not listen to us ROYALS! Hoshido? Who cares! Only our own country Nohr matters!” and Elise’s mindset is exactly of Corrin’s in both paths. Birthright Corrin never tried to kill anyone. Remember, in Birthright before you get to Castle Krakenburg you fight Camilla beforehand. Even when she lose, did Corrin capture her? No. Corrin let her off even if she could tell Garon about them. In Conquest you get to fight Sakura before you get to Takumi. Yet Corrin capture her. Yes, both Camilla and Sakura are women, yes, but the biggest difference here is that Camilla is an ACKNOWLEDGED WARRIOR ON HER OWN (if you take Siegfried from Xander, his stat is lower than her, That’s how OP Camilla is.) when Sakura is a PURE HEALER WITH NO COMBAT SKILL. Yet Conquest Corrin still captured her. And in Conquest you slaughter YOUR OWN PEOPLE. Again, Cheve... *sigh*

All in all, Conquest makes EVERYONE looks like idiots. Leo? He already see how Garon is off in the head as early as chapter 2 and Conquest brushes it off. Same with Elise’s empathy that is missing from her Birthright self. Azura.. Oh, can’t forget her brilliant idea to suggest invading Hoshido to make Garon sat on the Hoshidan throne . After her previous anxiety to point her blade to Hoshido, after she implied she loved Hoshido more because she remembered nothing good in Nohr. And Takumi easily forgave Corrin! After all those emotional abuse! He clearly is not himself in the final battle, and everyone shrugs it off, ignoring the chance the force possessing him may attack again?! Really, now? I facepalmed at everything plot-wise in Conquest.

“But Nohr family already suffered enough from the concubine war! They shouldn’t suffer anymore!” So? Let me remind you that 1: Hoshido family is BROKEN family too. BECAUSE of Corrin. Corrin got kidnapped is what shaping the Hoshido family. Was Corrin THAT important for Nohr family? S/he was raised NOT in Castle Krakenburg, and it was NOT her presence that stopped the concubine war. It was Elise’s birth. I see why Nohr family deserved WARM BLANKET AND HUG , yes, but not why they deserved CORRIN. For him/her, Hoshido family won by miles, thank you. 2: they are royals, man. They have a country to lead. And what they have done in Conquest? They also make their own PEOPLE suffer. When Xander finally become king in Conquest, did he learn something to NOT make him tyrannical like Garon? I didn’t see any hint of it. They are still royals. They need a lesson to stop them being a tyrant be it the hard way like in Birthright or the gentle way like in Revelation (that is actually NOT that gentle). Yeah, Birthright too leads to the events of Heirs of Fate, not only Conquest, but still, a happy ending is guaranteed for the moment . Conquest? What can make you sure Nohr won’t invade another country? What can make you sure Nohrian people will be happy and trust their ruler? Really, nothing... Also why the heck you get to see the hidden side , the prosperous side of Nohr whe you are NOT siding with them!? You are supposed to change Nohr from the inside, not destroying it! Conquest ENCOURAGES the mentality of a tyrant, not telling you how to stop Garon! If Conquest offer the chance to side with the rebels, unify the rebellion forces here and there in Nohr (Ice Tribe, Cheve, and probably more) and destroy Garon from the inside, and see the hidden side of Nohr that we get to see in Birthright instead, I’ll consider playing Conquest.

I promised that I will talk about Revelation too. Okay, here we goes.

Revelation! Elise too show awareness that Garon is nuts. And is not ONLY aware. she actually DOES something out of her awareness: That is,to finally LEAVE and REBEL AGAINST him. As I said before, Leo acts for support for Elise in both Birthright and Revelation. In Birthright Leo only allowed her to pass while supporting her idea in his heart. In Revelation he actually does something: Convincing Xander. Leo stays NOT because he didn’t believe Elise, he believes her. But if he leaves , who else would convince Xander, who stubbornly cling to the fact Garon CAN return to is former self? No one. That’s why Leo have to stay and convince Xander to join Corrin too in Revelation. When Xander join, he joined too. He already did his job.

As much as Leo acts as Elise’s support in Birthright and Revelation, Sakura too acts as Takumi’s support in Conquest and Birthright. When he fell to his knees because of his fever, she was the one beside him. When Iago got him in Birthright, it was her that breaks him free. In Conquest, Takumi lost all hope whne he heard she is captured. However, in Revelation, it got reversed. It is Takumi who acts as Sakura’s support. She was the first royal to join Corrin in Revelation ,setting a role model to everyone, and Takumi was the second royal to join. Other than his guilt to Izana, it is probably because Sakura joined he joined Corrin too to ensure her safety.

However, remember that in Revelation Takumi says “Healing can only starts with trust.”. Considering the context , it could be that he is referring to the peace of both countries in Revelation. But you know, it also could be he is unintentionally referring to himself in two other paths. Birthright!Takumi can recover because he trusted Corrin. An Conquest! Takumi is the opposite, that he never break free, never recovered as long he is alive.

All in all, Conquest is wrong, even if I only used Elise and Takumi to show how wrong Conquest is, it really is wrong plot-wise.

After all, this is a gamplay-heavy game, not a visual novel. Conquest have good if not best GAMEPLAY INTSys have to offer these late years, I’ll give you that, but the plot is a TOTAL WRECK AND WRONG.

The past two days have been wild. yesterday i went to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed, I’m not gonna go into detail, but it wasn’t pretty or comfortable at all, and I have a lot of stitches in my mouth now - yay!

Today i went to the psych department. i tried calling them yesterday and asking if i could move the time because of widom teeth removal, but it turned out I was seeing their senior doctor, not a nurse, and that shw wouldn’t have time to see me again before in a long time. so i had little choice but to go.

I talked to her for two hours. First she asked a bit about my history, not really family history, more like, when did i start school, what have i been doing with my life so far -ish questions. After that we moved on to the checklists for things, mostly psychotic stuff. She was ~very~ interested in my hallucinatory stuff. I tried to be pretty conservative about it. Surprisingly she didn’t really ask about delusional stuff beyond the classics, though i assume she read the notes from the other people i talked to.

In the end she gave me a preliminary diagnosis along the lines of “non-organic psychosis unspecified”. She said she felt like my issues were a mix of autistic traits, psychotic features and lots of anxiety + history related stuff, and that I didn’t fit well into any category.

I asked her what she thought about schizotypal since I’ve been looking into that, and she said her instinct wasn’t to go for that because my psychotic symptoms were beyond quasipsychosis, and she didn’t think i exhibited a good deal of the symptoms (particularly those related to negative symptoms of the schizo-spectrum, i think.) She did say that there was a likelihood I’d get that as part of an official diagnosis at some point, since it would convey some of the more atustic-spectrum issues along with the more psychotic stuff.

I’m going to be called in for conversations with a nurse, and she made a prescription which I’m not yet sure if I will use.

It’s for risperdal, which is one of the new-generation antipsychotics. though, it’s not very broad-spectrum compared to most other new-gen. it should be fairly non-sedative as far as antipsychotics go.. She told me they usually use 0.5-1 mg for anxiety, and 3-4 mg for psychosis, and she suggested I try just 1 mg and see how that treats me. It should be fairly kind in regards to sideeffects at that level.

I have no idea what to do actually. I guess part of me is just like fuck it, let’s take their damn medication. while another part is too afraid to lose my edge and become unable to deal with these symptoms if i start relying on a drug to do the legwork.

The thing is, i don’t think they are going to try and help me with other types of drugs before I’ve given this a chance. She seemed to believe that a lot of my general issues, including spaciness and the like, might be a bi-product of these symptoms, and that it made most sense to attempt to treat this first.

She suggested i apply for a mentor at university, to help me structure my time and get my work done, and she also suggested getting a “bostøtte”, which is like.. “external living support?” Basically they’re people who drive around and come by maybe once a week and help you straighten out your home. That sounds really humiliating and anxiety-provoking tbh, but what do i know.

Anyways do i know anyone who tried risperdal (risperidone)? I’m really unsure how to proceed. I’m kind of considering just never showing up for an appointment there again.

I may have made some type of mistake smh. I’m still super confused about the line between psychosis and quasipsychosis but she seemed so sure that I belonged in the first category :/

Well the good news was that she wasn’t particularly worried that I was going to get a lot worse (aka she didn’t see me as being at particular risk for schizophrenia f.ex.), likely since my symptoms hav been a constant my whole life. On the other hand she also didn’t believe I was ever going to be “healthy/sane/neurotypical”, basically for the same reason.

I feel like this still leaves me with no words to describe myself. I was starting to like stpd too. I don’t feel like it’s completely out of the game anyways, we’ll see about it all.

In any case I’m feeling fairly chill. My only issue is that my mother is going to call me tonight and I haven’t made up my mind about what to tell her. I am not going to tell my father or stepfather anything - which kind of pushes me towards wanting to disclose a bit more to my mum.

She was very set on the idea that I needed to try medication for adhd, but now that they’ve diagnosed me with psychosis they’re probably going to be careful with stimulants? She has a lot of users who are really not digging their antipsychotics, and I’ve been feeding her anti-anti-psychotic notions as well, so I’m not sure it will go over well if I present that aspect.

I could present it more as an anxiety-med, but I know that she is going to ask for the name and research the hell out of it. I told her I wasn’t going to accept anti-psychotics and she is likely to remind me of that.

At this point I honestly don’t know what I want for myself. Still, I worry about alienating my mom. If i had just not told her about the whole asessment in the first place, but I did, and I kind of sold her on the idea of stpd, but this is maybe something else..
